I'm sorry...But choosing the footage of Devo's music video "Whip It" for the lyrics "Who Danced for a synthetic band..." ...That made me laugh so hard, lmao. Threw me off guard, watchin' the video, lol.
Great video of this song. This must be one of Rush's best song they ever made.Well thought out, great music, and very experimental.Since I am a club of Floyd,Genesis,ELP,Yes.This song is very strong.Although a huge RUSH fan from way back. Thanks for the post.
Pretty darn good given the amount of work that it likely took to piece that together. It certainly gets close to illustrating the literal meaning of the lyrics. If I were a critic, I'd say that there are some bits in that video that run a little too long, and it would have been cool to see a transition from the flood at the end back to the tide pools again (which is what I believe IMHO that Peart was trying to convey). Nice job!
Wow, most of the perfect visuals to go with the song! Why it took 9 years to show up in my Recommended I dunno. As many times weekly as I key in a Rush song over the entire 15 year existence of TH-cam!
I've been a RUSH fan since I was 11 yrs. old ('73)... and I do read up on bands I like in Rolling Stone, Circus, Hammer, Hit Parader, etc. READ, and you'll find the comments and interviews on All bands who either "Went After Napster" or gave their Negative opinions on them, and Online Music Sharing back in '99 through their Shut Down. Tenacious D (Jack Black) is against File Sharing, as well, and he is a Huge RUSH Fan, too.
Beautiful song this is one of the first songs I actually learned on guitar still love it's kind of sad now though man are those mechanisms out of hand God help us all peace and love thank you guys for a wonderful 30 years of music
Does anyone ever truly learn this song on guitar? I doubt it. I’ve heard Alex Lifeson play this song hundreds of times live and it never really sounds exactly the same way twice. Got to be one of the coolest songs they ever recorded in my opinion.
3:45 Devo formed just 5 years after Rush, so they're almost contemporaries. Though from vastly different genre's, they're both "synthetic" bands. Synthetic in the technical sense. Genuine and real in the artistic sense. We get a glimpse of Neil at 3:49 anyway.
Whenever I hear this song I think of Olympic National Park. If you walk along the shore at low tide (you don't want to be there at high tide), you will see hundreds of beautiful sea anemones with little fish and crabs darting in an out. All trapped by rocks in little pools. Living in the pools they soon forget about the sea.
I am a Rush fan saw them 5 times, 1979 Hemispheres, 1980 Permanent Waves, 1981 Moving Pictures, 1984 Grace Under Pressure, 2004 30 year tour. I made a mistake dude. I had all of the albums no disc and lost them in a home fire. i am 49 years old and I'm an old school KISS fan, I saw them in 1979 Dynasty all original members. After that they were and still are a joke!
Agree with Simo...fantastic vid....could've done without the big left leaning ending, but wasn't too crass. If you haven't already check out Metal Guru Messiah...your vid reminds me of some of the stuff he does...Did this great tune justice. good job man.
Am I understanding this correctly? The statement made during the intro of this tune is that we evolved from little things that crawled around in the water then decided to crawl onto the dry land and the human race evolved from this?
@mysticlawlotus ... you notice that Geddy has left out this verse in "Every" tour since after the "Signals" tour? He was quoted saying that their (Rush) music & lyrics were for influence, life and expression thereof, not Money... so he 'had' to drop this verse on stage. You won't find another live recording with him including this verse, anywhere. Too bad, it really helped ignite ALL Art as Talent. Metallica, RUSH & 100's of other groups/musicians hit Napster for $ Rights, so... La vie continue
@jtpratt70 They "all" fit... Rush lyrics, musical style changes and visuals come from their view of the world... Ayn Rand was (at the peak of the late '70's and early '80's) their main influence (Neil's a Bookworm, you know?)... She came over from the USSR for freedom of speech and to express her philosophy, influencing many, many Professors and college/Professional intellectuals. She still has her books on "Best Seller" ratings... from 50 yrs. ago.
3:00 Sucked. I had a good friend that had problems with his mom and got shipped from TX to NH and was in one of Christa McAuliffes class's that year. NASA and the news had cameras all over the place and most of the school was in the auditorium watching the launch. Sigh. So sad. Chaos and confusion after that. I am in north Texas and I was in my back yard when Columbia was lost. I heard the boom. I knew it was an explosion, I just didn't know from where or what.
@uhcougarjoel magnificent job. the only thing I don't like at all is the intro, with that "rocinante's dashboard" ;-P. added to my favorites of course.
Well yeah, you are trying to prove the point that Rush was involved with napster. You seemed pretty serious about it when you went off on a tangent about "the 2000 A&M suit against Napster under the US DMCA." I thought the fly analogy (apart from the eating shit part) was pretty spot on. I like to bother people like you because you take the time to comment back. I'm honored to be taking time out of your day to talk to me. And whats up with the self censorship?
This song may not be well known, but to fans of Rush this is one of their best songs.
alex lifeson is such an amazing guitarist in my opinion one of the greatest most underrated guitarists in the world. I absolutely love RUSH.
Alex ain't underrated; he's right up there with the best! ✌
Never heard this song until now. Man, I've been missing out =/
keep listenin, I need to hear Caress again
An under rated classic!
A full clinic on musicianship. Amazing 30 plus years now. Where has real music gone?
It went Left.

@@dianedileonardo6353 It was always Left.

When music coupled with vision reaches a pinnacle there's but one way it can go.
Què letra por dios, Solo el genio de Neil, Alex y Gedi podian hacerlo tan claro su mensaje, volviendo al mundo una real ciencia natural, excelente!
I'm sorry...But choosing the footage of Devo's music video "Whip It" for the lyrics "Who Danced for a synthetic band..."
...That made me laugh so hard, lmao. Threw me off guard, watchin' the video, lol.
Time after time we lose sight of the way our causes can't see their effects. Triumphant and tragic. A mechanized world out of hand. Prophetic
To acknowledge the cause would mean to admit error and undo what has been created.
"Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea..."
Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent
Great job on this. RUSH is amazing !
Simply the best you could ever ask for.rich in substance. I hear bass....guitar and Neil loud and proud .
I don't watch the video ... simply soak in the audio .. my imagination supplies everything else .. . much love!

Also the song is one my all time favorites.
Hard to believe this song is almost 45 years old. Rush Rocks!

Awesome concept video!
What an awesome job!
Art as expression
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same
State of integrity,
It will surely help us along
the lyrics are so freaking amazing, this is truly musical philosophy.
That was so awesome with that homage paid to The Great Buddy Rich! @_@
My favorite Rush song. Not quite how I picture it, but an excellent job nonetheless!

Good job. And the sound waves at the end from the tsunami, wow.
I love that the creator of this video used DEVO as the "synthetic band"! Lol!

Very cool man. I challenge you to make this a little more positive. It leaves me a little depressed. Very nice creativity though.
“Science, like nature, must also be tamed...”
