The more I listen to this song, the more I think it's a masterpiece. It started when I read about this song in a Limelight comment section or something, and the person said it was one of their favourite songs ever, so I decided to listen to it, and I initially thought "eh". BIIIG MISTAKE. It initially came up like half a year later on autoplay while I was studying and it eventually ended up on my playlist, and here we are.

Saw them a couple times for Snakes and Arrows and then a couple for Time Machine and their shows were absolutely amazing. Wish more people could have seen them before Neil went through Cygnus X-1 for the last time.
I saw the interview, I didn’t really get the feeling he meant it that way. He was asked what was the hardest song to record, he said all of them laughingly. Then he went on to say natural science was very difficult. I think the boys all agreed la villa was the most difficult to record because they had to do it in 3 separate recordings and cut it together.
That’s funny to me as a drummer who’s learned YYZ. The only thing that’s difficult about it is the time changes and signature changes. The technical skill isn’t that demanding for this one lol
@Albert Mojica,Jr. That sounds good, but i think it was 2112 were they rebelled from the record label contract. Natural Science was a b side, never intended to be a top 40 song like Spirit of Radio, but i think its one of there best. This song totally hypnotized me as a teenager.

A thumbs up does nothing for what this piece is worth. It somehow allows all the ups and downs in life since 1980 to be felt. Tears throughout. The quickest 9 minutes ever, yet feeling like 9 hours worth of therapy :)
This is about how people can forget about nature because of technology, and how we must value this blue planet❕ There are some odd 7/8, 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures in “Natural Science” (1980) along with the normal 4/4. Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson stated : “I can pick a song that was a hard song to play and feel that was what was challenging and developed a particular style and difficult songwriting. ‘Natural Science’ from those days is one of those songs. Hard to play, the parts were really interesting to develop and were challenging, and the songwriting itself was a challenging experience.” Producer Terry Brown and assistant Kim Bickerdike used oars in lake water to make the splashing sounds at the beginning of the piece. ❤️🌎💚
Not to be a bubble burster but the sound at the end is waves crashing on the seashore (tying in with the lyrics and theme of the song), not a train. Very glad you like the song though.
I always thought it was "Not that market complains" because the producers and executives could still take a cut on producing the vision of the artists.
Rush - great musicianship, song structures, lyrics, Alex Lifeson always on the cutting edge of technology availability, using Marshalls, Fenders, Jc120's, Hughes & Kettner, Washing machines, echoplex, every rack effect ever created, Gibsons & his collection of 400 guitars, being in total control of the equipped & technology. There will never be anything like them ever again. Hats off to Rush!
One of the best songs ever made. that space voice, those lyrics, the progressive energy is unreal, that solo, the melody dang nothing comes close but Rush themselve hahaha
You get caught up in it so much that it goes past like a dang heartbeat. 10 minutes, over and done. Onto the next. Or replay from the beginning. I've done that with most of their songs, "holy SHIT what was that, I have to hear it again so I'll just listen to the whole song!"
This and La Villa Strangiato may be the band's magnum opus..in mother nature's crucible, she concocted the trio of three uber geniuses at the top of their game..the chance of these 3 meeting and having neil at the helm of the ship with lyrics that are beyond meaningful and resonating, is nothing short of astronomical..like one in a gazillion..like a gift from the gods rush was given to us all. I'm not a religious person, but their music touches me at my core..beyond explanation..they are like air for sustenance..a necessity in life...hard to explain...songs that describe such esoteric subjects with ease, interpersonal dynamics..neil was a great observer of life and saw things in a very unique way and his verbiage and vernacular in the lyrics is beyond superb...beyond sad what happened to him..my heart weeps...but he would not want that..we have such a huge legacy to enjoy time and time again...bravo for all they have done.
As Dali said that the hallucinogenic toreador was “all Dali” and Led Zeppelin said that Kashmir was “all Zeppelin”, for me Natural Science is “all.Rush”. Genius.....
I love my wife, I love my family, I love my dogs, and I love "Rush". My neighbors know I love your music also. After making a nuisance of myself my neighbors started coming over to jam. My front porch is 11 by 40 with a 12 foot ceiling-all wood and glass. It sounds great. Music is fun. We jam twice a month at least. When we really go at it we use your style, Alex.
The opening lines of this song resonate so clearly, and along with many RUSH fans we may relate to this. As a child I was brought by my bearded scientist father to a special place for camping stays in a place in Western Washington state called "Tongue Point" on the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula. It was/is a paradise for tide pool experience, observing the tides going in and out, and perfectly describes what I think this song is about. I marveled at it as a child and have returned several times with several friends to experience those little pools of impressively diverse contained aquatic worlds. "When the ebbing tide retreats Along the rocky shoreline It leaves a trail of tidal pools In a short-lived galaxy Each microcosmic planet A complete society A simple kind mirror To reflect upon our own All the busy little creatures Chasing out their destinies Living in their pools They soon forget about the sea" ...
