Yeah, The video does help enhance the song quite a bit. But Discovery was not the first shuttle launched. Columbia was. At the 1:01 mark we see the Discovery Shuttle on the launch pad. Which is fine. But would have been cooler if it were the actual first shuttle launch with Columbia.

This song was the highlight of the Signals Tour. A video very similar to this was projected behind the band for the song. Rush could be the only band that could play a 3 1/2 hour concert and somebody in the audience would not hear their favorite song. Their body of work is so vast and awesome.
The background about this song is truly beautiful with the fact that NASA invited them to experience it and sit in the VIP area along with high level politicians and others. It's an amazing story.

Indeed, 5:13 "Columbia, you're looking a little hot and all your calls will be a little early . . ." (Followed by) "Young and Crippen really moving out now, velocity reading of 6200 feet per second." *That is nearly one thousand feet more than a Mile, per second!* And then, "What a view, what a view." - "Glad you're enjoying it." - "Columbia, Houston, we have 40 seconds to LOS, after LOS you're looking good for an over-the-hill; we'll see you in Madrid." *LOS* is loss of signal, and this was the first Space Shuttle launch in history, on April 12, 1981. All three RUSH band members were there, standing in awe with many others in the "Red Sector A" viewing area. This was an inspiration for the song of the same name, from *Grace Under Pressure* in 1984.

Excellent job! You captured it! I saw them perform this in Toronto during the Signals tour. Tons of "smoke" billowing from the base of the screen behind them for the launch scene. That was a big deal for back then. Have been to the Cape many times and actually saw 2 shuttle launches back in the 80s as well! Nice work!

The entire space shuttle program was amazing and I loved growing up during that time to experience it. Your video solidifies this beautifully. Thank you.
What simply stunning footage to go with a simply stunning tune (how could Geddy suggest this song wasn't all that good?!), although for many years, i didn't need any actual footage to 'get' this - my imagination was truly locked-in to, and able to build the whole episode, such is the immense 'storytelling' power on display here. The lyrics are sublime, and the whole tension of the thing is just incredible, until it finally resolves itself once the craft is well and truly off-the-ground. Each to his own (Geddy x), but this is amongst the best of Rush... \m/ (:o)
klistarf Imagine how cool the keyboard riff at 4:31 would have been if it was Alex on guitar instead. I think Geddy was referring to the grief he got from Alex n Neil regarding his obsession with keyboards during this period of their music. Although the synth totally plays to the time period, I still prefer Geddy on bass.
Just saw this video. This is really awesome! I am big, big rush fan and this was a real pleasure for me to watch! Thanks a lot. I know the song since I am a teenager and now over 50! 🙂
I did a similar video production from the maiden Columbia launch on VHS using the “overdub” button lol. Lost the tape. Glad to see another one. Great job.
What a song that really starts out slow and builds up to make you feel like you were hanging with them as Columbia streaks towards the heavens. And such a tribute for the one that didn't come back
This is tremendous. I really like this song and you have captured pictorially the sense, the emotion and the visuals they paint with the lyrics. Most classic example of musically painting an image I can think of and you nailed it. Thanks for sharing!
Woa!!!! Great job on the video Rush would definitely approve they did the best they could with the video available back in 1981 but you got all kinds of great angles of that beautiful machine all in HD thanks for the post I enjoyed that!!!
Decades ago, I was the service manager for a company that installed the big satellite TV systems. The test system in my office was almost always tuned to satellite S-2, channel 9. N.A.S.A. On launch days, volume on the phone got turned off; everyone got quiet, and we all watched intently as the engines began to billow fire as the shuttle launched. Truly a mix of magic and science.
I saw this performed live at Radio City Music Hall, in September of 1983. My first Rush concert, 16 years old. It was like the Beatles on Ed Sullivan for me. I couldn’t have been any more excited about any other event in my life at that point. Such a great memory. Is this the actual video they would show during concerts?
Great video collection of launches. In my slide show I made same mistake of not using "white et tank" images as this is song is about the first flight Columbia..ans was only not painted later to save weight.
The Mercury Redstone and Atlas. The Gemini Titan. The Apollo Saturn V, and today’s modern re-usable SpaceX Falcon IX returnable boosters... They were and are all awesome. But they one and all were and are vertically staged boosters. Rockets that looked the part. There was no doubt in the mind that they should fly exactly as they did and do. But the Shuttle was a different beast altogether. Never before and likely never again have I ever seen or will ever see such a wild conglomeration of shapes, volumes, size and angles. It is the ultimate in “that has NO BUSINESS flying at all, much less to orbit”!!! I loved it. In modern day I would say that it was the most “Kerbal” of designs. It is ridiculous, preposterous, ungainly and yet it flies beautifully!!! The shuttle was AWESOME!! As Rush’s lyrics so aptly put it. It was a fire breathing dragon of a launch vehicle. And like the mythical dragons of old, which would never realistically fly, and yet do - at least in the imagination - there was something ineffably magical about it. A magic that Rush perfectly captures with this song!
Great video.. right up until the end... you should have had the video end with separation of the ET from the orbiter, signifying its reached orbit... That's truly the end of the launch (and the end of the song).
You gotta love the way the astronauts and flight control talk back and forth to each other at the end of the song there: - "Columbia is now 36 precise window in space, remain engine cutoff." - "Launch into 40 seconds. Columbia now 39 north-a-miles altitude ah, 42 north-a-miles down range." - "Columbia, you're lookin' a little hot doggin'. Your calls will be a little early." - "Young intrepid really moving out now. Velocity now reading ah, 6200 feet per second." - "What a view. What a view." - "Just glad you enjoyed it." - "J-hundred-a-mile west." - "Columbia/Houston ah, we have 40 seconds. Say-alla-west. Configure alla-west. You're lookin' good for an over hill. We'll see you in the drift." - "...and we're going to need this but, not yet." - "Ah, me and John...we just wanted to say something."
Shuffle liftoff Countdown Columbia Mission showed the power of American spacial engineering and the first-rate sound effects of the rush. Long Live to Rush.
The Shuttle was just fascinating. It was an incredibly ambitious and technically impressive piece of engineering. And yet, in practical terms it was actually a bit of a disaster. It was meant to reduce the cost and increase the frequency of launches, but instead was outrageously expensive per launch (even compared to single-use heavy rockets) and had low launch frequency. It was also statistically the least-safe manned space launch vehicle ever put in service. But it's just so COOL. Space fans rightly have very mixed feelings about the Shuttle. I think it's right to call it the Lamborghini Countach of space travel.
I Pray That Everyday The Beautiful U.S.A. Never Gives Up The Space Program...We Are Out There.............Peace Profound To All..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great song and well done video. I just wish they had used the original, 1981 launch that Rush was at to go along with the video. Back then the big external fuel tank was painted white. Granted the video quality from those early launches didn't match this-beautiful.

Glad you liked it!!
klistarf Imagine how cool the keyboard riff at 4:31 would have been if it was Alex on guitar instead. I think Geddy was referring to the grief he got from Alex n Neil regarding his obsession with keyboards during this period of their music. Although the synth totally plays to the time period, I still prefer Geddy on bass.
I saw RUSH on Signals tour it was a highlight of the show when they played this. Love this tune.
Outstanding job on this video! Thank you for putting it together!!
Great job.
The subject, the video & the song still manage to give me goosebumps even after all these years.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it !!
Excellent! I really enjoy this video version. This song still gives me shivers when the Main Engines come to life.
Just amazing work. As a kid I listened to this track and tried to picture what seeing the shuttle launch would be like. Just awesome.
Woa!!!! Great job on the video Rush would definitely approve they did the best they could with the video available back in 1981 but you got all kinds of great angles of that beautiful machine all in HD thanks for the post I enjoyed that!!!
Ten seconds into the video and lit up with goosebumps. Awesome!
This is the video that should have been made years ago - again, congratulations, this is an excellent production.
Excellent video, love, love, love this song and RUSH ❤!!!
This is one of the best music videos for one of the best songs ever. Well done!
Rush really rules because of their music is no other kind and will be here for future to listen to.
The Video and Editing you do is Somewhat Surreal... Excellent Pro Work on All of your Videos... Thanks for doing These...
Well done. Very, Very well done
How great. Storytelling at its best by Neil. And that beat drop by Geddy. Damn.
how on earth is there any dislikes on this epic song and video ????.....and don't say because there in space !!
Great combination of the track with video of the launch
10 Times better than the original!! Got goose bumps at the end, well done!!
juggalo2112 Although I would have rather heard Alex's guitar at 4:31 instead of keyboards
No way, nothing beats an original, including the original of this video bk in the 80s. This video was cool, but original was cooler
😍😎. Luar Biasa... 👍
Rush tecnologia , música e NASA tudo impressiona.

Great video.. right up until the end... you should have had the video end with separation of the ET from the orbiter, signifying its reached orbit... That's truly the end of the launch (and the end of the song).
What a beautifully edited video! Modernized version of Rush's original video!
You gotta love the way the astronauts and flight control talk back and forth to each other at the end of the song there:
- "Columbia is now 36 precise window in space, remain engine cutoff."
- "Launch into 40 seconds. Columbia now 39 north-a-miles altitude ah, 42 north-a-miles down range."
- "Columbia, you're lookin' a little hot doggin'. Your calls will be a little early."
- "Young intrepid really moving out now. Velocity now reading ah, 6200 feet per second."
- "What a view. What a view."
- "Just glad you enjoyed it."
- "J-hundred-a-mile west."
- "Columbia/Houston ah, we have 40 seconds. Say-alla-west. Configure alla-west. You're lookin' good for an over hill. We'll
see you in the drift."
- "...and we're going to need this but, not yet."
- "Ah, me and John...we just wanted to say something."
Great video. The last shot really gave me chills.
RIP John Young. And I think this is the best bass tone Geddy ever had on a record. Epic Rickenbacker tone. He should've never changed from this.
very underrated Rush song, among many underrated songs they have..can it get any more vivid?
awesome!!! added to favorites list
Shuffle liftoff Countdown Columbia Mission showed the power of American spacial engineering and the first-rate sound effects of the rush.
Long Live to Rush.
DUDE, thank you for all your videos.
+Physics Anthony Thank you for watching!!
Very fitting video for such a great song...good job creating it...it is well done
Love your work. This one (minus the missing Rush playing of instruments) is in my opinion BETTER than the original.
I can recall seeing this video for the first time when it was at Cedar Point on the imax screen… years and years and years ago 🙂
Thanks man! I hadn't heard this tune in twenty years I'm sure.
I Pray That Everyday The Beautiful U.S.A. Never Gives Up The Space Program...We Are Out There.............Peace Profound To All..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many times have i gotten high to this? approximately every time i want to. Best song to start a session out with.
Absolutely brilliant, and so much better than the Rush video! At 3.19 what is left of my hair was standing on end!
Robert J Irwin Hypnotherapy Thank you !!
wow! jaw dropping...the cutting edge for sure. by the way, youd have to be nutz to fly the shuttle. I'd pass out and void myself, literally.
Also to note: At 5:00 this was the actual transmission that Young & Crippen had with Houston.
Classic pure quality Rush !! How can 8 idiots not like this ??
Amazing liftoff and flight sequences, well done.
Been there, seen this-it truly is electric...
WOW amazing Great work!
Great song and well done video. I just wish they had used the original, 1981 launch that Rush was at to go along with the video. Back then the big external fuel tank was painted white. Granted the video quality from those early launches didn't match this-beautiful.
This is a bad ass video!!
Thanks !!
....outstanding!
Thank You !!
Thanks very much! Updated video presentation rocks!
Very well done. I congratulate you sir! Better video then the original.
I thank you sir!!
The ride out is mesmerising😊
God Speed Commander John Young! Great vid!
