    It’s incredible how contagious the tension is in the film. Every time this scene comes on No one breathes a word: not even a pin drop. It’s like the film itself is holding its breath.

      What they actually had happen in real life was different but probably almost equally scary.
      I think the sense of "leave now while you still can" was almost the same for their family in real life.
      Other things were different but I know what you mean.
      I still watch these scenes in honor of their real family and I think of the scary things that *could* have happened to them.
      I'm sure they thought of some of those same things too.

      It wasn't only the Captain the Nazis wanted in real life either.
      The oldest son was by then old enough to be a doctor and the Nazis were trying to get him to work for them too.
      Plus the whole family could have been caught, jailed etc. for helping any of the family members hide.

      @robbyosborne9708 I agree, it seems like in the area where the Captain, Maria, and the kids were hiding, the lieutenant and the guards were looking in that area a few seconds longer as seen from 2:22-2:34. Then when he said "come on lets try the roof" would probably have been where they didn't find them there and the lieutenant would have said "they're not here in the abbey, lets climb up the mountains and see if they're in Switzerland" which they would have caught up with them but, luckily two of the nuns broke down their cars. At least the Captain, Maria, and the kids were hiding in an excellent safe spot with the gates locked and they're hiding behind stone walls.

They weren’t interested in winning any first prize back at the festival; all they wanted was to get away, out of Austria so they could be safe.

From then on, I started to think that Rolfe may be the abbey's caretaker and he knew all along that Mother Abbess took them there to hide.

    I had to act this scene out as a child in a rather big production of the sound of music. I played marta (the second youngest). The production made it look and feel so real. Each night the way we would be caught by rolf would be slightly improv. Sometimes i would have my foot grabbed as a result of it hanging out, but it made it all the more real. i as a young child, found it hard to seperate the different realities. I ACTUALLY BELIEVED we were hiding from the nazis. It was incredibly terrifying but exhilarating.

    • @julistarling8382
      @julistarling8382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That must have been an incredible experience.

      I was thinking that if I was ever lucky enough to be in it, in the part that feels dangerous I would be saying to myself "this is for the real Trapp family and for thankfulness for their safety and that they escaped without ever having to go through a scene like this one".
      That scene makes me feel slightly nervous just *thinking* about it.
      Probably more so if I were ever to be *in* it.

    • @julistarling8382
      @julistarling8382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is played so real that you can get worried about them even when you've seen it 100 times and you *know* they escape.
      One of the very most powerful scenes in the whole thing.
      You know these were all good actors because they can play all different kinds of emotions in one film.
      Also. Remember when the kids were scared in the thunderstorm?
      Which is what Gretl is probably alluding to with her line about the song.
      This time the danger is more real.
      So many different levels in one movie.

      Worst game of hide and seek IS RIGHT!!!! Scared shitless; almost like trying to hide from the police, only it’s the BADDIES they’re hiding from!(not that they’re wanted by the authorities.)
