This car is going to sell like hotcakes. Even in the US Mitsubishi dealers can't keep them on the lot before a buyer walks in. SUV are all the rage, but since Chevrolet refuses to sell a Voltec Equinox this is the closest you can get without spending $15k more for a XC60 T8 or GLC 350e. Heck looking at how well the Outlander PHEV sells in UK, I won't be at all surprised if this is the car that saves Mitsubishi in North America.
oh it sells alot i work at a dealership I've seen companies buy like 30 for a fleet it's nice and big, $30 for almost a full tank that last forever and it doesn't look like a junkie electric toy
I'm an owner and am not disappointed. Great power and torque, comfortable, huge cargo. Not missing my old gas guzzler. People need to think forward and start thinking about EV's and hybrids.
I hope Mitsubishi does well with this in North America, but I really think they would've had a home run on their hands if they debuted it in NA back when it originally came out. Nobody was selling anything remotely similar at the time; they would've got plenty of sales from the same people who were early Prius and Volt adopters, and it would've helped their image in a big way.
they didnt put it out in NA then simply because they couldn't build enough of them to satisfy the Asian and European markets at the time. A bit unfortunate but they still sold more than they ever predicted they would.
Didn't the iMiEV have to do a lot with Outlander PHEV not coming right away. They just discontinued the iMiEV and now what do you know....the PHEV is now available in Canada. Don't they both have a 16 kWh battery too?
I love the Outlander PHEV. I would go with the Rally Red Paint, Brown Leather Interior with the Red Piping and GT trim. What a nice vehicle. I love Mitsubishi vehicles for their reliability, standard features, warranty and simplicity.
Nice Review Zack! Learned alot I did not know about the Outlander PHEV. I love these, and that brown interior is sharp. I got to wit in one the other day at a Mitsubishi dealer while my co worker bought her 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport LE AWD. I noticed how soft the steering wheel leather is and how much more premium the door switch panels and trim is. The 4 spoke steering wheel really makes it feel substantial as well. I think it will sell well in the USA here. Thanks for the review!!!
I watched a video of a TH-camr who managed to get 50kms out of a drive because he was driving at b0, he would coast at 100 and tap the pedal here and there
Have been following the PHEV Outlander for a few years, I was hoping the electric range would be double by now. I guess the Kia Niro PHEV will have to do.
The revised version due out next year is supposed to be going to have a 70 mile/ 100km range. The only problem is that the US and Canada are getting the 2016 old models at present, in Europe we already have the 2018 interim model and it's substantially better.
I have this car for about a month very satisfied, don't do the mistake i did of getting the GT, the adaptive cruise control is not that great at all(it's not Tesla) and the other features definitely don't worth $10,000
Temperatures make a huge difference in electric range. I would think 25 - 30 would be a fair expectation when you are below freezing, and even lower if you are in really cold places. That has been my experience with the Clarity PHEV. At 10 C /50F - we start getting more than 40 mile range. Waiting for Spring to start seeing the rated 47 mile range.
Bryan Becerra there is a tonne of space in the second row. The gas versions offer this vehicle as a 7 passenger, which means that they have designed the second row to actually generally move forward to accommodate the 3rd row passengers. Because of the twin engine platform, there is no space for the extra seats- hence the PHEV being a 5 passenger. This means you get all that extra space all to the second row! I can get you more information if you want !
It is excellent. We only have one child - but she and her Forward facing convertible easily fit. I could see fitting another child seat pretty easily. Check out Alex on Autos review of the Hydrogen powered Clarity - the interior room is pretty similar. Consider it as a bit larger than a Civic and a bit smaller than an Accord.
A recent article said in cold countries (NE US, Canada etc) EVs in temperatues below -5 celcius is havoc on the EV, nearly halving the useable energy and thus drive time if using a heater
I just drove this car here in the US . It is just too slow in EV mode to be useful (or even fun) and the range is poor. Batteries cost have decreased since 2014 so they really should bump the battery pack up to a least 24 kwh. The build quality is OK no lumbar support and the suspension felt a little stiff though. I would wait for the next gen version of this vehicle or the slough of other PHEV's coming in the next 2 years.
Big Adventure... Hmm stiff? I feel like the suspension is on the soft side. We own it and yes there are a bunch of quirks. And also agree the battery could be larger. However the wife and I regularly get 40-54km city errands. Or 30-35 highway. We also have seen as much as 65 on the Guess-o-meter. Also if you get a chance take it on gravel or snow. Mind blown! So good! I used to have an Evo x Mr and not saying it's as good but definitely feels similar coming out of a loose gravel corner as the Evo. Really that good! Recently took a secondary highway from Princeton BC to Summerland BC the center section is 40km of logging road. Anyway have had it nearly 5000 km so far and are very happy with the purchase. Our road trip to Victoria netted $130 fuel savings over our old vehicle, a Volvo V70R. Similar size but frankly the Volvo did have more useable space.
Oh, I got all the techno goodies too! And all those sensors do get clogged with salt and sand making them useless. So, as I was taught in motorcycle school: "Signal... Mirror... SHOULDER CHECK!!!" :)
Just got an RVR and happy with it. I get the concept of Electric cars, but the money you save on gas, dont you just spend it on electricity to recharge it at home? And really only good for local city driving? What if you live in a rural area, be using gas anyway to power this
Cars are typically around 3 times more efficient on electricity than gas, so you theoretically save some money there. (If 20 miles of driving took 1 gallon of gas that cost $3, you should expect to pay around $1 in electricity for that first 20 miles of charge. You can also charge late at night, often automatically, when your electricity is cheapest.) A plug-in hybrid vehicle just turns into a regular hybrid after you use up the charge from your home, so it STILL gets really good mileage, even if you NEVER plug it in.
Makes sense, will be many years before anything like this is on my radar. I guess a way to save money plugging it in is to use the neighbours electricity :-)
Still very sceptic on those EV and hybrid SUV. Car like this are supposed to perform in heavy conditions. I'm not sure they can meet the expectations outside the city.
Yep, it says 1500lb on the US version but 1500kg on the European version, I think that the US regulators are probably more conservative than other countries.
It cost $15,000 more than a fully loaded Outlander PHEV and only has a 8.8kWh battery pack however. Still more plug-ins is something I would happily embrace. I'm still somewhat disappointed that the C350e never made it from America however...
Stay away, I drove mercedes up until 2001, then they started making them all over the world, I looked at one in the showroom and it had a crooked boot line and panel gaps, no thanks, I'd look at the reliability surveys if I was you, Lexus 1st, Mitsubishi 2nd equal with Toyota, the German brands are now ranked below the French makes, which isn't great.
this is the exact same instrument cluster that is in the Toyota Highlander hybrid. I just bout the Highlander hybrid. If this Mitsubishi had a third row I would have bought it over the Toyota.
The other exterior color options will get you a black leather interior with white stitching. The quality used here is above that of the gasoline Outlander GT model with the V6. Mitsubishi is trying really hard to make this a more premium vehicle.
This top trim GT sure has a lot of missing switch gear buttons across the dashboard. It's like Mitsubishi has almost quit trying to compete in North America. They better keep selling this model north of the U.S border.
It depends on your use case, I have a 5 mile commute, I need to charge it every other day ( that includes trips to the shops etc). I do a couple of 1,000+ mile trips every year when I'm mainly on petrol, I get 28- 35 mpg on the long trips but basically only fill the Gas tank when it says that I have to, (once every 2/3 months or so to avert fuel degradation), the rest of the time. Mine is one of the more modern 2.4l versions that you haven't got yet so it's a little different but basically the same, if it fits your usage it's impossible to beat. It's very reliable, very comfortable, fairly conventional looking but costs half as much to run (my usage). We also get a purchase subsidy and a tax deduction ( benefit in kind reduced rate) for business use in the UK which makes it very popular with business users.
do not buy any car Mits company only sale the cars did not take care customers I did buy the cars Mits only 3 days tow to dealer again again again , 20 times they did not fix my cars untill no more waranty then finish I did call manager I did send mail to head office but ! No one resp ????
I still don’t understand why anyone would spend their hard earned money on a car from a company that neglected its R&D and design teams for decades. Most of the dealers were chased out of Canada for trying so sell cheap cars at the same price as Toyota’s and Honda’s.
You decade old cars at the same price right? I remember looking comparing the Lancer with the 8th Generation Civic back in 2006. 10 years later, they were still selling the same vehicle, albeit with a new bumper design, for the same price with the same basic kit installed as in 2006. The Civic meanwhile was already onto their 10th generation.
Wasup Fool Prius prime is 40kms. These are plug in hybrids, not EVs... I think these are ideal setup where you can go most of the way to work on electricity, charge at work and go home all on ev. And then there is a gas engine as backup for longer trips.
The full range is around 370 miles in mine, the EV gets about 30/32 miles, 50km but mine is a 2.4, bigger battery model. It's great it gets me to work and back and down the shops for a couple of days which is about 90% of my usage, I do 3/4 long trips a year and It's just like a normal cars consumption but it's a medium size SUV. It also tows 1.5 tonnes (1500kg) in Europe, I don't know why it's only rated at 1500lbs in North America.
Well done, a good car, useful information, and cool discounts for saving the environment and contributing to high technology! Cavt tanem. "According to Google"
This thing actually sucks! If you think about it! Just because your the first to the market with a crossover electric SUV (oh sorry for got about the escape Hybrid and rav4) doesn't mean it's a good product!
bmx7596 that's you mate, you clearly didn't read or don't understand the plug-in part of Phev . Neither of those were Phev when you commented they were ordinary hybrids. The RAV4 Phev was released on 8th June 2020 and the Ford Escape Phev still hasn't been released in 2021. I've got a 2018 2.4l, 13.8 KWh Mitsubishi and it's fantastic.
I don't know a single person these days that buys a sport utility vehicle for the sport utility, so saying it's electric but you keep the utility means nothing. You either go full blown electric or not at all. There's nothing impressive about a hybrid.
it doesn't matter what the next option is. It's 60g's for a mitsubishi. The company who makes the worst car on the planet. 60g's and I don't even get ventilated seats... come on!
wyatt bowen You mean one of the most reliable car brands? Go on carcomplaints.com and look at all current Mitsubishi models they have little to no complaints. This is due from being built in Japan. Plus this vehicle is extremely popular in other parts of the world. The vehicle is worth the price.
Ummm... no- not even close to 60k... 45 for base, or 51 for top... and you get a 2500 bc gov rebate... so closer to 43 or 49... you stated facts about ventilated seats. Here are the facts on true pricing.
Louis Win this has the potential to save this brand in Canada. It's the only one of its kind in the market in this country with nothing similar on the horizon. For suburban or urban based families, it makes a lot of sense.
+Louis Win not true, 2017 was Mitsubishi Canada's best year ever. They have new products in the market and have more in the pipeline now that they're part of the Nissan Renault Alliance
Completely agree Zack. I can see this easily outselling the gas version of the outlander and becoming among the best selling crossovers in the country. For it's 4,000 premium over a gas version, it's great incentive. Not to mention the rebate, especially in Ontario at 10k! It just makes sense for families.
Except that Mitsubishi can't keep up the production, as all PHEV or EV makers. Honda only gives 6 Clarity PHEV to each dealership in Canada this year. Some of them have already hit their quota in less than a month.
Cars don't work for many families. Many of us need the extra space and utility this provides. That's the market segment they are targeting. Other than a Pacifica, which doesn't have AWD, this is the only option of its kind in the mainstream market.
I agree on the space part , as we have a 7 seater chev Orlando . This SUV only seats 4 . We have owned SUV , mini vans and the Orlando is best so far as you can seat 7 or fold all the seats or some of the seats down for picking things up or in our case Mx gear . I would have bought the Mitsubishi in a second if the range was greater as it's not to much more then the well equipped Volt
Zack, one of the few car journalist that gives Mitsubishi the time of day. Thanks for the Great videos.
This car is going to sell like hotcakes. Even in the US Mitsubishi dealers can't keep them on the lot before a buyer walks in. I got one of these in December and love It! Probably the best car that I have ever owned and experienced insofar as build quality.
Best selling plug in in U.K.
Especially plenty of them around London
Very good car indeed
I'm an owner and am not disappointed. Great power and torque, comfortable, huge cargo. Not missing my old gas guzzler. People need to think forward and start thinking about EV's and hybrids.
Congratulations on the Outlander. How do you find the mileage when the gas engine kicks in? What is your purely electric range? Thank you.
Yes, yes, yes. These are the plug in vehicles we NEED.

Love the Canadian models with built in compass in the rear view mirror
Damn if I wasn't stuck with a RAV4 lease until 2021 I'd get one of these bad boys.
Too bad you can't add all 3 motors together even momentarily, 277 HP would've made this hell of a car.
its not working like that
Nice Review Zack! Learned alot I did not know about the Outlander PHEV. I love these, and that brown interior is sharp. From numbers alone this makes more sense than the RAV Hybrid where gas engine kicks in at 45 km/h and the EV range is just a few km at best.
CarTestr - Car & SUV Reviews in English & Swedish huh? Regular hybrids, like the Toyota, have no true EV range, because it's speed dependant.
Toyota hybrids have stuck with small NiMH batteries which hold much less power. This one is Li-ion.
This guy knows his subject. Very informative
looks like he filmed this in Stanley park. Lovely place
Great review, thanks for taking time to explain tech side of this PHEV.
35km??i drive 42km everyday on this car only in Ev mode......and this is below minus degrees
You must be hypermiling ? What city are you in?
Bob Ranch trondheim,norway.
Yeah, from what I've read the range is around 35 miles not km.
I watched a video of a TH-camr who managed to get 50kms out of a drive because he was driving at b0, he would coast at 100 and tap the pedal here and there
Fast forward 2 years, there are still a handful of these in Alberta. All of them are $10,000 off, cash deal I’d assume. Good deal.
Hope that they will make Outlander more wider next time!!!
Zak, This is one of your best videos yet.
Have been following the PHEV Outlander for a few years, I was hoping the electric range would be double by now. I guess the Kia Niro PHEV will have to do.
Head room and electric range are my main means.
The ground clearance of the PHEV is only around 20cm (7") and not great for 4WD. It's still only a softroader.
The Niro PHEV has good efficiency but no AWD. This would be a deal-breaker for many, especially in Canada.
The revised version due out next year is supposed to be going to have a 70 mile/ 100km range. The only problem is that the US and Canada are getting the 2016 old models at present, in Europe we already have the 2018 interim model and it's substantially better.
WOW, $2500 rebate in BC, a province with no vision!
"No vision"? Whatever. Not sure where you're going with that bullshit comment. In 2019 we got an extra $2500.00 rebate so 5k total.
I have this car for about a month very satisfied, don't do the mistake i did of getting the GT, the adaptive cruise control is not that great at all(it's not Tesla) and the other features definitely don't worth $10,000
Our next crossover ..

absolutely! I left the dealership with 24KM left- drove 11KM, and returned with 22 KM left. The regen braking system captures A LOT of energy!
How do you like the clarity? I'm on the fence of buying one. My concern is will it fit 2 kids with car seats?
Bryan Becerra there is a tonne of space in the second row. The gas versions offer this vehicle as a 7 passenger, which means that they have designed the second row to actually generally move forward to accommodate the 3rd row passengers. Slight error, the save mode electric motors in series, topping up the battery as you go
I would drive that, great review
A recent article said in cold countries (NE US, Canada etc) EVs in temperatues below -5 celcius is havoc on the EV, nearly halving the useable energy and thus drive time if using a heater
Which is why they have a 35km written range and most people are seeing closer to 55 km of range in the summer (Y)
nice, still a small market share of suv to buy!! good job
Excellent review
Great Review. Thank you.
Aww Geez! It's 35 miles and 52 km per charge mate.
It's a fantastic vehicle
Didn’t know they still Mitsubishi’s in the states.
Now you know!!!
finally its in canada :)
nice review
It's a shame the Outlander PHEV's BMU has a software to gradually reduces battery range over time.
Everyone do yourself a favor and watch it on .25 speed
hahaha!
I've been waiting on the PHEV for 3 years now.... Ended up getting a Leaf instead... :|
I just drove this car here in the US . It is just too slow in EV mode to be useful (or even fun) and the range is poor. is there air vents/ducts to the back seats?
Overall mpg for me is in the 90s with awd and tons of space. It can't be beat for what it is.
Big Adventure... Hmm stiff? I feel like the suspension is on the soft side. We own it and yes there are a bunch of quirks. And also agree the battery could be larger. Deard dude from motormouth Canada, do you remind any 2018 models with heated steering wheel? I know the Volvo but want to know others.
yurieu crv
but you didnt talked about Milage ...
No shoulder check!? I'll keep my A3 e-tron. Love the virtual cockpit and acceleration!
Oh, I got all the techno goodies too! And all those sensors do get clogged with salt and sand making them useless. So, as I was taught in motorcycle school: "Signal... Mirror... SHOULDER CHECK!!!" :)
Folks, Don't hesitate, run out immediately and get your Mitsubishi before Renault 'improves' them the way they improved Nissan ;)
Right Lane Hog I'd normally fully agree but Mitsubishi is surprisingly worse than them
Completely disagree.
I will stick to my original contention, I'd buy a Mitsu before it gets 'Renaultized'
Roads plowed , in Ontario there's lots of volts around getting 70-120 km
And a bolt getting 250 km
I live in apartment complex with underground parking. How would I charge my vehicle.
Tish Orth public chargers
when convenient. It will just drive like a regular hybrid if you don’t charge.

How do you get heating on ev mood in the winter?
Has electric heating but it will run the battery down I imagine. Interesting vehicle.
Still very sceptic on those EV and hybrid SUV. Car like this are supposed to perform in heavy conditions. I'm not sure they can meet the expectations outside the city.
They've had these in Europe for 4 years, do your research.
Isn't EV lock the equivalent of a differential lock.
No, locks it in pre EV mode as long as possible
What’s the difference between EV mode and pure electric
Nothing.
Landon Thomas
Thx!
I'll be out if this isn't a 7 seater. Now my choice is Toyota highlander hybrid.
Can you get a towbar on it?
Yep, it says 1500lb on the US version but 1500kg on the European version, I think that the US regulators are probably more conservative than other countries.
Don’t you get it no more Gazoline
Merecdes GLC350e 4matic is coming...
It cost $15,000 more than a fully loaded Outlander PHEV and only has a 8.8kWh battery pack however. Still more plug-ins is something I would happily embrace.
I'm still somewhat disappointed that the C350e never made it from America however...

I like the red
This top trim GT sure has a lot of missing switch gear buttons across the dashboard. It's like Mitsubishi has almost quit trying to compete in North America. They better keep selling this model north of the U.S border.
And no word on fuel consumption...
It depends on your use case, I have a 5 mile commute, I need to charge it every other day ( that includes trips to the shops etc). You mean 1500 kg tow, not lb ?
In Australia its 1500KG towing capacity. I think there was a mixup in translation by Mitsubishi, but my local dealer told me 1.5 ton.
do not buy any car Mits
company only sale the cars
did not take care customers
I did buy the cars Mits
only 3 days tow to dealer
again again again , 20 times
they did not fix my cars untill
no more waranty
then finish
I did call manager
I did send mail to head office
but ! No one resp ????
Probably be a while before they show up in the Maritimes.
New ? Looks same previous version
Nurullah Kurt Exactly my thoughts!
New in Canada. There were never PHEV models here.
I think you mean PHEV SUV? Chevy Volt has been through 3 generations already.
Correct. The Outlander PHEV has never been sold here.
I still don’t understand why anyone would spend their hard earned money on a car from a company that neglected its R&D and design teams for decades. Most of the dealers were chased out of Canada for trying so sell cheap cars at the same price as Toyota’s and Honda’s.

The tech may be great, but it looks like a used piece of soap. Boring.
Did he say 35 km range ? If so that’s aweful
Wasup Fool Prius prime is 40kms. These are plug in hybrids, not EVs... I think these are ideal setup where you can go most of the way to work on electricity, charge at work and go home all on ev. And then there is a gas engine as backup for longer trips.
Awful? Can you name another car of it's seize with AWD that does better? Oh and that is under $40k after rebate?

bmx7596 that's you mate, you clearly didn't read or don't understand the plug-in part of Phev .
60 000$ for a mitsubishi... not a chance in hell
the only other vehicle that is even the slightest comparison STARTS at 77K, without the taxes that you have added. just sayin'
Go find a better vehicle with the same tech for the same price that offers rebates, oh wait....
it doesn't matter what the next option is.
Here are the facts on true pricing.
kalachmltsu
Dont buy this Car it has major bmu/battery degration issues!
I've got one, it's been sorted out by a free software upgrade from the dealer.
@@paulm2467 its not a software issue.but hardware
As I said, I've got one, a 2018 2.4l, 4h and the dealer did a software update and I don't have an issue.
I can use the fingers on one hand to count the years that Mitsubishi has left in North America.
Louis Win this has the potential to save this brand in Canada. It's the only one of its kind in the market in this country with nothing similar on the horizon. For suburban or urban based families, it makes a lot of sense.
Nissan Renault Mitsubishi are now an alliance and Mitsubishi sells very well in Atlantic Canada.
35 km range ! Are you serious ?
What a waste of time
How does that even come close to a chev volt
steve legare you completely miss the point to this vehicle. You're comparing it to the wrong category of vehicle.
I am comparing it to a vehicle I am going to buy and that's a Gas/Elec whether it's a car SUV or truck it's a gas/elec version vehicle
If we're talking Chevy Volt, I suggest too the Honda Clarity PHEV: much more space (despite being a midsize sedan) and more luxurious than the Volt.
