Check out the great collaboration video that Mark and Derek filmed on Wolters World! th-cam.com/video/718Y1XY_73Y/w-d-xo.html Thanks in advance for your likes, shares, and subscriptions!!! 🙏Did Jocelyn and I forget anything? Feel free to add your tips in the comments below! 👇😀
Lots of helpful tips, thanks for the summary. I have a few plumbing thoughts. Rather than just turning off washer taps(great idea) I turn off main water shutoff in house. Any flexible hose can leak(they are all over your house) toilet tanks can leak/water heaters leak so by turning off main shutoff you cover off any point of failure. Also I turn down water heater temperature to vacation/low heat setting. Also make sure all fridge doors are completely shut, sometimes they can still have a crack open and that will cause issues such as freezer defrosting etc.
I have friends that came home from Vacay and found there upstairs toilet leaked and it cause huge damaged. So it’s also a good idea to turn off water to all your toilets. Also leave your washing machine door open cause it’s a wet area and can get moldy and stinky.
I’m using my home for Airbnb so I’ll be leaving to rent it out for a month. Not exactly the same as going on vacation but these tips were still super helpful and necessary!!😍💜
*Really enjoyed this collaboration with Jocelyn. Very comprehensive indeed.* 👍 Making sure something delicious is in the freezer ready to heat is a great tip. For over 3 years my tradition was to always stop at a specific Chinese restaurant for takeaway every single time I landed. It was located between the airport and my house and one night I pulled in because I didn’t want fast food knowing my fridge was cleaned out. The owner would greet me with either “where did you go this time?” or simply “tell me about your trip.” 😆 They moved to a location only a few miles away but it’s really no longer convenient. 😐
Oh no, that's so sad that they switched locations on you! Sounds like it was a little something familiar and tasty to look forward to at the end of a trip. I personally love Chinese food, so I'd definitely look forward to eating that at the end of a travel day!
Glad you brought up the thermostat unfortunately we don't have a smart one and my dad has us turn it off before leaving for vacation needless to day when you come home in July or August in Texas your house feels like a thousand degrees inside 🙃
Speaking of holding mail, also put a hold on your UPS or FedEx packages (though sometimes they don't so have a neighbor looking out for them as well). If you haven't already, set up Informed Mail from USPS so you can monitor what's coming (good if you're traveling or not). We also unplug the washer (in addition to turning off the water supply to it). Good tip! Arrange to have your yard kept up (if traveling in the growing seasons). Yes, tell a neighbor but then don't go posting those pictures on social media until you get back. Don't advertise you're gone. Good video and important tips to remember.
This is a great additional tip! Thanks so much for sharing it!!! 😀🙏 We did the informed mail with USPS while we were in the UK for three months and it was awesome!
We traveled all summer each year growing up and our checklist included cup of bleach in each toilet, turn off water to hot water heater in addition to washer, unplug electrics (lightning).
Great tips! Personally, the only reason why I don't have pets is because it's a pain to take care of it when you travel.which is also why I don't have any plants!
Thanks Eliz and Jocelyn, great tips and advice. Also, Just to let you know that I’m still following Means To Travel, as well as watching your videos. But I haven’t been commenting as much.
Yes! Although I’ve found that most hotels (and many airbnbs) don’t offer laundry machines - especially tumble driers - so you’ll likely need to be a bit strategic on how to make that happen.

Thanks for all these great tips to keep it as safe as possible!!! 🙏🏻
Great video. You went through a lot of very helpful tips we don't necessarily think about before going away for a long time. Thank you Ladies
So glad to hear you found this video helpful! And yes! I was so grateful to Jocelyn for sharing lot’s of tips with all of us! 😀
Great to see Jocelyn collab with you Eliz! Very thoughtful tips, especially the water.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video! 😀
What a dynamic duo! Loved it! Adding turning off water at washer to my list. Good idea.
Thanks Kim! Yeah that was such a great tip from Jocelyn!
Aw, thanks Kim! We had a good time making collabs. The guys just posted one too... th-cam.com/video/718Y1XY_73Y/w-d-xo.html

Yes!!! Great points, and also leave your dishwasher slightly ajar for the same reason 🙏🏻
Helpful tips . . . Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!

I'm so glad you found this list helpful as you become a host! I've stayed in a lot of AirBNBs and love feeling more at home while traveling.

Great tips. I check this each time we take a long trip for great reminders! Very thorough.
So glad you find this video helpful before your travels! Thanks so much for watching each time, and hope you have a fun trip planned coming up! 🙏😀
Glad you brought up the thermostat unfortunately we don't have a smart one and my dad has us turn it off before leaving for vacation needless to day when you come home in July or August in Texas your house feels like a thousand degrees inside 🙃
Yikes yeah that would be really hot to turn it off all the way! Maybe you can get him yo compromise at 80 degrees or something 😀
Or have a friend pop over a few hours before you get home to re-set it to a bearable temp. 🤗

Two wise ladies with great tips.
Thanks Eric!!!
Great tips, thanks! Yeah, the washing machine valves... great one.
I agree that tip was GOLD!
Fun video, and great tips! Nice to see you two together!
Thanks! It was so fun to film together! 😀

This is great! I had never heard of the bleach tip before and will likely give that a try real soon!
Still a great helpful video
Thanks Mark, glad you think so! 😉😃
Great job ladies with the awesome tips. I just now see this as I have been burning up the roads here in Germany lol. Thanks for sharing :).
Thanks Darion!
Immediately subscribed!🔥💎. I literally just had to get a P.O. Box Because mail hold was max 30days. Ty for sharing 🙏🏾

I get this Iggie! It’s one thing that holds us back from getting a dog.
What Derek said haha. I wish our lifestyle would let us have a dog!
Thanks Eliz and Jocelyn, great tips and advice.
Also, Just to let you know that I’m still following Means To Travel, as well as watching your videos. But I haven’t been commenting as much.
Thanks Lee, glad you enjoyed! Always fun to have you watch! 😀
Thank you so much 💖
So glad to help! Safe and happy travels! 😀
Remember to not mention you are traveling on your social media. Hurricane proof your house or storm proof depending on where you live.
Yes great point, these are all so important!
Another tip, wash your dirty laundry where you are vactioning at. When we return home, all we have to do is put the laundry in the drawers or closets.
Yes! Although I’ve found that most hotels (and many airbnbs) don’t offer laundry machines - especially tumble driers - so you’ll likely need to be a bit strategic on how to make that happen.
Take advantage of hotels coin laundry if available to not bring home a bunch of dirty laundry
Love when hotels have coin laundry!
I have been told to notify my landlord when I go away
Yes, it's so helpful to landlords to know if the tenants are away in case there's a big storm and they should go check on the property. Makes sense!
Such a great video Eliz and Jocelyn!
Thanks babe! Love your video with Mark, too!
Like if a tornado comes and destroys your house and ruins your life - “Yeah!”
Gosh I hope that never happens to someone 😬
Substitute mail carriers will screw this up
Ugh, sorry to hear that. I've had good luck with mail holds, but I'm sure it all depends.
