After improving at least 1 second each one of my lap records on every single track this is the best sim racing tip ever. In my driving experience, The adjustment of the FOV helped dramatically on the smoothenes of my driving, being more precise especially when starting the turn and exit points, and way more consistent lap time with less errors. Great video, simply brilliant!!
This really only helps if you are able to run you monitor up against the back of your rim so that your FOV is somewhere in the 40s. If your monitor is so far back that the FOV calculator gives you something ridiculous like 19, then your field of view is so small that the car is undriveable, everything is magnified and warped, speed sensation becomes non existent, etc. With a field of view in the 40s it’s very natural, it’s what it would be with the monitor by your rim and it’s close to default in most games. If your monitor is mounted to a wall behind a desk and a little further away, it doesn’t really matter, your brain can still adapt to that with a reasonable FOV. There’s simply no way someone can be faster with an FOV of 19 vs 40 - the lower FOV flattens things so much that you can’t tell the difference between going very fast and very slow, which makes judging corner speed impossible. Of course it’s a useful tool if you have a cockpit and optimal monitor position, but for everyone else, it’s often going to be disadvantageous to use these FOV calculators.
If I use the calculator I should run AC (not ACC caus' i haven't that yet) in 22* and i have a 40" LED att my feet of my rig. It looks way too zoomed in with that so i guess I have to compromise.
I thought I was going crazy. I had been doing really well at a 55 angle FOV and then tried the calculator and came up with 28 angle ideal mark. My TV is 107CM from my eyes. I feel like apexes are hit well but like you said the sense of speed is nonexistant, overshooting everything.
Yep. The calculator came up with 25 for me but i race on 40. There's a balance to be struck between realism and the overall playing experience. It is a computer game after all.
Be warned, when going from default FOV to real, you will feel EXTREMELY SLOW. But, you will notice you will hit your brake points much better. It does take time. Pros: Realistic Hit brake points better Have correct response time to accidents If you race in real life, you will translate from track to sim Cons: Feels "wrong" at first Loss of sense of speed Can't see mirrors (some sims like Assetto Corsa have virtual mirrors (F11) If no mirrors, can't see blind spots unless you glance in direction.
I use my mathematical correct fov for other a year now and I need to say that you kinda gain your sense of speed again you get used to it very good after some time and with the mirrors you can move your seat in the car which can help a lot sometimes
I normally raced using the default cockpit view. Stumbled on driving the dash view by mistake and it felt a ton easier to drive. Wtf. But I'm not sure I can get used to not seeing the steering wheel in the game as an extra input feedback for myself. And using a closer fov with the steering wheel just makes it huge and weird. Meh
The FOV is one of the most effective settings in games generally. It actually effects the whole geometry around your virtual identity. In a racing game it directly has impact on the car and its physical handling. For example, a loose rear end is way more difficult to catch when the FOV is small. So it is not only a visible effect, it is also noticeable.
Ever since getting use to the correct/ideal FOV, I've become somewhat of a FOV snob. If the racing sim doesn't have adjustable FOV, then I want no part of it.
This video made all the difference to me. Thank you for this. I tried a few races but just couldn't drive close safely. I used an FOV calculator and adjusted the position to make it work. As you said the I started getting the curbs right and driving alongside and close behind was instantly not an issue, well long way to go for me but atleast it's feeling natural now. Something to build upon. Didn't realise FOV is this critical to spacial awareness, the brain takes care of the rest once it's set up right. Thanks again 🙏☺️💯
Thanks for this video! WOW what a difference! in like 45 minutes i went from 1:57 to a consistent 1:53 on snetterton! (i'm still noobish to sim racing). Can't thank you enough!
The reason why most people do not use a narrower FOV is because no racing sim can emulate movement of eyes. In the real world your eyes are constantly moving to switch focus between multiple views: ahead, to the side, the cockpit, the dials, up, down, etc, and they are constantly re-focusing from short to long distances. Narrowing the simulated field of view to be so-called "accurate" means your view is essentially fixed in one plane but without the flexibility of moving your eyes up/down or left/right. While you can set "look to apex" as you turn that doesn't mean quite the same thing and nor do VR-type head movements produce the same results. For this reason most people feel more comfortable widening the FOV even if that means the view angle is a bit too wide. Also because you are looking at a screen rather than the real world the FOV is not giving you the same depth of field as you would experience in the real world, even if you have VR. For that reason, again, most people feel more comfortable with a wider FOV.
Bind keys to look left, back, and right. Yeah you’ll have to consciously look to your side but the value of mathematically correct FOV is you’ll be able to judge distances and speed using your brain’s pre-existing understanding of space, since everything will be in exactly the same spot in your vision as if you were actually driving the car. If you try to fit more information onto the screen, you lose that natural sense of depth and space. It’s hard to explain but when you experience it you’ll understand. It’s a trade off but I think it’s worth it. However, it works best with a fairly big screen, fairly close to you. If your TV is across the room, correct FOV isn’t really an option.

If you are using triple screens in ACC and you are running an nVidia card you can run nVidia Surround and ACC will seemlessly use your triples while driving (although when in the menus the two outer screens will be blank).. Same is true of Dirt Rally 2 ... Great video Mike! Some really good information and I particularly appreciate your point that fun is more important than FOV. I personally find being slow and /or inconsistent to be very unfun, so having the correct FOV is very important for me. To the point that the correct FOV reduces the sense of speed - this is also the thing that makes most who use a correct field of view more consistent, as your braking markers are more easy to spot and you have the time to accurately hit them, and you are more likely to be able to purposefully act" to situations that arise in races as opposed to just "reacting". In all the in-car footage of professional race drivers you have ever seen, have you ever seen one panic?
The fun thing is, when you narrow the FoV, the sense of speed lowers, but that also makes you feel like you have a lot more time to hit that turn in. i had to set mine a bit higher then the theoretical "best" fov. I find 46 deg to be a nice FoV. Mostly raced in the first view with the wheel. Gives a good sense of what the car does too, but now also starting to try the dashcam, gives a beter view but i feel it looses a lot of the in car feel.
Same here set at 46 and feels good to me....been slowly moving it down from default in incriments so its not an overload on brains. I found going from default for memory was 72 straight down to what was meant to be ideal and really i could not deal with so thought just slowly work fov down.
@@shanerobinswpr7027 Good idea. I did the same. Got used to the 7s default FOV, the used the FOV calc and needed to reduce it to 51 degrees! Felt weird and slow, so went to 60 and working my way down.

@SimRacing604 Thank you VERY MUCH ! Now i play more accurately and faster. OLED TV 55", distance 85-90 - FOV is 43 instead standart 54. I feel apex more correctly!
(almost 3 years late, sorry) I don't have the best monitor (21.5") and I am 80cm away from it. The calculator gave me 18.6° which is absolutely undrivable. I just went with 40° which is okay.
I am playing ACC on ps4 and I wondering which cam is better in terms of FOV and simuation(you can't edit that) dash cam or cockpit view? I am playing with a thrustmaster t300rs, on the one hand I feel like I already have a steering wheel and maybe dash cam helps me hit apexes better but i dont know there's something about cockpit which feels very good... which is better for faster lap times?
So I calculated everything, I have a 49'' wide screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio sitting 70cm from the screen. And if I set the ''correct'' FOV of 27 degrees it looks like i'm sitting on the hood.
I have just a stupid question, not about the theme of the video :) Have you made a video about your video settings in ACC? It looks so amazing. I have the same PC that you wrote in the description and I absolutely cannot see the game as good as you. Specially in rain condition.
Andrea Iachini I haven’t done a video about my video settings, but I just use the default settings, usually HIGH if I’m hotlapping, or EPIC if I’m recording b-roll for a video
Do curved screens have the same fov as flat ones? And which type do you guys prefer if all other variables (refresh rate, response time...) were the same?
Thanks, gonna do that! What do I have to see on my monitor? Is it enough when I just see the bonnet and the track or do I need to see the dash and the display?
Just preordered acc for Xbox . I am super excited . I had so much fun with project cars 2 but it’s time to play something else . Just a question: there is a pre set dash cam in the game yes ?
Theodoros Kosiatzis I think you’re going to love it! It’ll be a blast on XBOX. And yes, there are a number of selectable views, including in-car, bonnet and chases. 6 or 7 preset views if I’m not mistaken
I sit 82 cm from my 24inch monitor and my realistic fov is 21 but I can see so little to the side that I get lost in long corners. It's close to unplayable like that even with real head motion on. Do you guys play on huge monitors or do you sit up close to the screen?
Both. I'm currently 67cm away from my 55" OLED so running about 57 degree FOV. The closer you sit and the larger your monitor, the wider your true FOV setting will be. It's very in your face and you have to move you head a bit, but the immersion is great!
where do the data come from which are used by the FOV Calculators? is there any published information about FOV published by the publishers of the games? For example: TV 21:9 50 inch and TV 16:9 55 inch should have the same horizontal FOV which is not the case when using the FOV calculators.
Hi, I’m running ACC on triple ASUS 43” 4K monitors which equates to a resolution of 11520x2150. However, in the ACC video setting it doesn’t allow for this resolution? Can you help please? Thanks.
At 6 minutes in, you show how to adjust the camera (distance, pitch etc). The Distance is giving me fits in ACC. The stock distance is way way off, the on screen wheel is entirely too big when using the calculated FOV. To get it correct, I have to move Distance to -16 to -16.5. Which makes it seem like you're sitting in the back seat. I don't know if this is just ACC, vertical FOV, or a single screen things, but it is a pain. Specifically I am referring to the 488 Evo. Have a look next time you're on and you'll see what I mean. Stock it is +4, but even moving to 0, it is way off.
I am playing ps 4 and there is no option for fov when i pause but i am in the beginning of the game ..do i have to go to racing section and will probably come up?
As you know this game was launched today for the PS4 and everything is going great except that I can't change the field of view for the cockpit. It seems that for PC it is in the pause menu below options but for the PS4 they seemed to have forgotten about this. Any help you can provide me will be appreciated
@@SimRacing604 this is insane then. Why would they make this stupid mistake? The field of view could be adjusted in the original Assetto Corsa so it makes no sense that they have removed that.
Emmanuel Perez because most people who play this title will be sitting across a room on a couch playing with a controller on a 50” TV, and not concerned about FOV
Hi, with bumper camera which is a fixed FOV maybe 56 deg, the car feels very fast but I can position it perfectly over bumpers and apexes. With cockpit camera and correct FOV the car feels slow and controllable, but I can't position it correctly over bumpers and chicanes feel extremely narrow compared to the bumper camera. How to fix this? Thanks!
I actually went through all the views yesterday after watching this vid. Funny enough, the front of car views already had default FOV that were close to the calculated true value! SO out of the box yes. But if you adjust the cockpit views to a similar FOV, and then use distance and tilt to optimise your view, then I found it just as fast.
Yes, you should have brought an xbox and are now being punished by lucifer. Well actually they didn't implement it in the PS version (yet?) FUlly adjustable in the xbox seris x version, and it's very good.
Screen size has absolutely no impact on FOV whatsoever. Distance from screen.... also, 0 impact. Calculators are a load of crap. FOV is by itself, a setting to dial in depth perception. You'll need around 52-54 for a realistic FOV. But a few clicks either side of that is fine.
@@fingerhorn4 But in a real car "interior" movement varies from person to person based on size and weight. The generic head and body motion is way off from a person who might be 6'2 vs. someone 5'5. A person who weighs 150 lbs is going to be effected a lot more than one weighing 280 lbs. Also, the "screenshake" that is used by so many sims is awful. In reality our eyes adjust to to movement because our eyes can filter out the movement. If you have ever raced in VR you would see the difference.
@@fingerhorn4 yes, but the movement ingame is not my own movement. Making the car feel floaty. Locking it best for me and makes u feel more connected to the car

Yes it is. It is called 'simracing' for a reason. Many competitions have the cockpit view as mandatory. But if not mandatory, then it is still wrong for simracing, but if you enjoy it... Never seen Lewis Hamilton floating behind his car though.
I don't get it, when i drive a car in real life i can see all my dash and all my interior so why i should set my fov like I'm sitting 1 cm behind the steering wheel
I just found out, that the FOV calculators are ALL WRONG!!! You do not need a calculator. Just sit down in your rig, set the in game seat on zero vertical and horizontal... and now let the magic happen... Grap the wheel... look to the horizon... adjust ONLY the fov to the point of immersion when it looks like your own hand on the ingame wheel in your peripherial view... BAM!!! Start the engine and FEEL THE MAGIC!!! NOTE: My FOV calculator said a FOV would be correct in AMS2 with 71 degree...... 50 inch 21:9 screen and eyes 82 cm away and from car to car I had to adjust the seat... This works, but try the other way... THE IMMSERION STARTS HERE!!! Now my FOV is between 100 and 104... And it is far easier to hit the apexes.... Please let me know if you understood ... I am willing to explain... sorry, but many videos do not use it correctly... and lead me to hundreds of hours driving with a complicated adjusting to the "correct fov" which lead to a less correct and immersive driving experience... The FOV and immersion are dependend on three points on a straight line... Your Eyes, your hands, the monitor... You can then adjust the seat... TRY IT!!! NOW: Take a car and let it put a smile on your face on the Kemmel Straight when you hit the 300 kmh :-) Let's call it FEEL OF VIEW! Even with my T150 I can feel the weight distribution of the cars and these moments you are almost flying... That's a GAME CHANGER! Looking forward on your feedback. Here is a video explaining the correct fov adjustment in the first 45 secs: @
If you are driving with a FOV of 104 you are clowning, your depth perception will be way out of wack. What's you best hotlap around Bathurst and Spa with that setup?
Mehdi - I made something similar quite a while ago, but I still get lots of questions. Also, the last one was more focused on what the correct settings were, rather than why you need the correct FOV
I had for a long time a narrower FOV like 35°. But when i was driving AC on road tracks like Transfergarasan, i had no feeling for good breaking points, coz i did´t n realized how fast i was, and crashed to often! Now i use 65° on all sims and trying to make the best of it.
The best middle way is fov 45 and seat back that you see a little trough the sidewindow. A smaller fov is for me to much loss of sense of speed. I am 80 cm away from TV. 49 zoll
I just... People say there is a correct FOV and it sounds like elitist bull shit. But I just... Thank you. Seconds... Off every track I've tried so far. It's like I was racing crippled. I guess technically I was. Thank you.

I don't have the best monitor (21.5") and I am 80cm away from it.
Great video, great explanation!
Racing Sim Tools thanks so much!
Virtual Classroom, thanks Mike!
How about putting your single monitor (of 24 inch on a monitor arm) to match the in-game steering wheel to your actual physical steering wheel?
do you recommend using track ir for this game? i might be getting a wheel and try race games again. I already have the track ir from my flying sims
Do curved screens have the same fov as flat ones? And which type do you guys prefer if all other variables (refresh rate, response time...) were the same?
Nice informative video mate.
parabéns pelo conteúdo!!!
Keep in mind that when you change the Distance you are also changing the FoV but height and lateral changes are still fine
Im 7'0" so narrow FOV feels super awkward for me, like I'm leaning over the wheel haha
I feel you mate
SimRacing604 perfect , thanks . 23rd of June can’t come fast enough
27 inch montor, 120 cms to the screen ... fov was calculated to 16, that seems way too low? I already lowered it to 32 and it feels too low 🤔
I sit 82 cm from my 24inch monitor and my realistic fov is 21 but I can see so little to the side that I get lost in long corners. It's close to unplayable like that even with real head motion on. Do you guys play on huge monitors or do you sit up close to the screen?
park you butt a bit closer to your monitor my man! I have a 32inch monitor and I'm 65cm away from it (measured from eyes to screen)
Both. I'm currently 67cm away from my 55" OLED so running about 57 degree FOV. The closer you sit and the larger your monitor, the wider your true FOV setting will be. It's very in your face and you have to move you head a bit, but the immersion is great!
Can I change FOV on Xbox one?
Awesome video.
where do the data come from which are used by the FOV Calculators? is there any published information about FOV published by the publishers of the games? For example: TV 21:9 50 inch and TV 16:9 55 inch should have the same horizontal FOV which is not the case when using the FOV calculators.
Hi, I’m running ACC on triple ASUS 43” 4K monitors which equates to a resolution of 11520x2150. However, in the ACC video setting it doesn’t allow for this resolution? Can you help please? Thanks.
I can’t change my camera settings on Xbox
is this still a problem?
im not sure whether to buy the game and this is important to me
At 6 minutes in, you show how to adjust the camera (distance, pitch etc).
40 degrees give or take, the calculations say 21 but holy shit its like the camera is on the bonnet xD
I am playing ps 4 and there is no option for fov when i pause but i am in the beginning of the game ..do i have to go to racing section and will probably come up?
I play on ps4 but I cant change the camera settings
As you know this game was launched today for the PS4 and everything is going great except that I can't change the field of view for the cockpit. It seems that for PC it is in the pause menu below options but for the PS4 they seemed to have forgotten about this. Any help you can provide me will be appreciated
Emmanuel Perez yeah, I’ve yet to try it, but from watching other people’s videos I’m hearing FOV can’t be adjusted
@@SimRacing604 why would you say that? ACC is a simulator in all the sense of the word. Idiots? They are everywhere. We can't avoid them.
Emmanuel Perez then leave and don’t come back
Hi, my FOV is greyed out and the value it is set to is not correct how can I change this in ACC?
Hi, with bumper camera which is a fixed FOV maybe 56 deg, the car feels very fast but I can position it perfectly over bumpers and apexes. With cockpit camera and correct FOV the car feels slow and controllable, but I can't position it correctly over bumpers and chicanes feel extremely narrow compared to the bumper camera. How to fix this? Thanks!
Which screen view is best though? Which one do we apply the FoV to?
How do you change it on console
No one ever discusses the proper or best distance your eyes should be from the monitor. I personally have a tough time measuring this distance
is this for the PC version or will work on the ps4?????
Question then.. isn't it better to use the camera that only shows the road and no dashboard? if we are talking about faster lap times I mean
Probably. But if you want some realism you have to view in car. Not bumperview.
Hi there where is the calculator for fov please
Does moving the seat position back affect the FOV setting?
No. You're just moving the camera around. FOV stays unaltered
I just set mine correctly and it looks like I'm looking through fucking magnifying glasses.
I am on PS4 and when I pause the game there is no view settings does anyone know how that is possible?
Yes, you should have brought an xbox and are now being punished by lucifer. Well actually they didn't implement it in the PS version (yet?) FUlly adjustable in the xbox seris x version, and it's very good.
My daughter messed with my keyboard and my FOV settings seem now strange, i got used to the default ones, is there a way to reset it? Thanks
When on track hit pause, view settings, reset to default
Screen size has absolutely no impact on FOV whatsoever. Distance from screen.... also, 0 impact. Calculators are a load of crap. FOV is by itself, a setting to dial in depth perception. You'll need around 52-54 for a realistic FOV. But a few clicks either side of that is fine.
Cool
Next Video Idea: Turning off cockpit and head movement and only using WORLD movement in sims like AC to simulate real car movement.
But that assumes that in a real car your head is locked in one position and your eyes do not move. That is not the case.
The point is, the cars reactions to the track itself should be causing the movements, not your "floating" head.
@@fingerhorn4 yes, but the movement ingame is not my own movement. Making the car feel floaty.
Locking it best for me and makes u feel more connected to the car
Is it wrong to use external view when driving ?
Brett Maybery not wrong, just less immersive. Some people prefer it, so do whatever you enjoy the most
SimRacing604 I went seconds fast at Nurburgring straight away 1.59.7 cockpit view to 1.55,9 chase care view and I have done many hours in the cockpit mode first try I was faster
Yes it is. It is called 'simracing' for a reason. Many competitions have the cockpit view as mandatory. But if not mandatory, then it is still wrong for simracing, but if you enjoy it... Never seen Lewis Hamilton floating behind his car though.
I can't see anything with those settings which get calculated
Try moving the seat back, or make some small changes to the FOV
nice one mike thanks
James Dowling thanks for watching!
My fov calculator said 21 and that is impossible to drive
How to get behind the car?
I don't get it, when i drive a car in real life i can see all my dash and all my interior so why i should set my fov like I'm sitting 1 cm behind the steering wheel
You can move your seating position back
because your looking into a monitor witch is much smaller than a window screen
@@tan143danh ahh i get it, thanks
I just found out, that the FOV calculators are ALL WRONG!!! You do not
need a calculator. Just sit down in your rig, set the in game seat on
zero vertical and horizontal... and now let the magic happen... Grap the
wheel... look to the horizon... adjust ONLY the fov to the point of
immersion when it looks like your own hand on the ingame wheel in your
peripherial view... BAM!!! Start the engine and FEEL THE MAGIC!!!
NOTE: My FOV calculator said a FOV would be correct in AMS2 with 71
degree...... 50 inch 21:9 screen and eyes 82 cm away and from car to car
I had to adjust the seat... This works, but try the other way... THE
IMMSERION STARTS HERE!!! Now my FOV is between 100 and 104... And it is
far easier to hit the apexes.... Please let me know if you understood
... I am willing to explain... sorry, but many videos do not use it
correctly... and lead me to hundreds of hours driving with a complicated
adjusting to the "correct fov" which lead to a less correct and
immersive driving experience... The FOV and immersion are dependend on
three points on a straight line... Your Eyes, your hands, the monitor...
You can then adjust the seat... TRY IT!!!
NOW: Take a car and let it put a smile on your face on the Kemmel
Straight when you hit the 300 kmh :-)
Let's call it FEEL OF VIEW! Even with my T150 I can feel the weight
distribution of the cars and these moments you are almost flying...
That's a GAME CHANGER! Looking forward on your feedback.
Here is a video explaining the correct fov adjustment in the first 45 secs:
@
If you are driving with a FOV of 104 you are clowning, your depth perception will be way out of wack. What's you best hotlap around Bathurst and Spa with that setup?
Is it okay if I change my distance if the cockpit view is to enclosed?
Yes.
Reason why I can't do it on ps4?
Haven't you made already this vid ?
Mehdi - I made something similar quite a while ago, but I still get lots of questions. Also, the last one was more focused on what the correct settings were, rather than why you need the correct FOV
I had for a long time a narrower FOV like 35°. But when i was driving AC on road tracks like Transfergarasan, i had no feeling for good breaking points, coz i did´t n realized how fast i was, and crashed to often! Now i use 65° on all sims and trying to make the best of it.
Jido Fisterfilly that’s a big jump in FOV! But I’m glad you found one that works for you
65 is too much, try the default 54 and then go slow back to 45 - 50
@@RK-io2os I already was. I will try 65 now for a few month. When i realize, i´m to slow, i will change it again. But not for now.
@@SimRacing604 Thanks!
How it says everything but view settings
Coming to console in Feb
Is it automatic on xbox one or do you have to set it
Have to set it, in race pause menu, view settings.
is 17 deg fov too low?
The best middle way is fov 45 and seat back that you see a little trough the sidewindow. A smaller fov is for me to much loss of sense of speed. I am 80 cm away from TV. 49 zoll
How do u do it on console I can’t find it😭
👀
Does this work for xbox
Can this be changed in ACC for PS4?
No, you brought the wrong console for this and many other good reasons. This is your punishment for making bad life choices🙂!
@@dimsoneill Wow, you won the best prize for Queen Drama
People on console 👀 (with no FOV adjust option)
Xbox series X version has it. Are you blighted by a PS in your life?
Can you change the fov in the xbox version?
You can in the xbox series X version. It's great. PS fanbois are not happy!
There is a big gap between options and restard
(Restart)
I just... People say there is a correct FOV and it sounds like elitist bull shit. But I just... Thank you. Seconds... Off every track I've tried so far. It's like I was racing crippled. I guess technically I was. Thank you.
To anyone here: can the following setup run only Assetto corsa in triple 1440p with med. Settings?
I7 8700 / RTX2070 Super OC / 32gb 3200mhz
Heard and saw a lot of confusion about this config. Would be thankful for opinions since its an expensive choice^^
Should go pretty close mate. ACC is a GPU hungry beast though.
MIKE!👍
Is this not available for ps5? I don’t find where to change it
