    About Simple Little Life:
    This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
    Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
    Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

    Your little boy is super cute. Time to go play with cement.

    Looking good! I used a 12" pipe 2 feet long, and simply cast 2" of cement inside, using an 8" pipe. I also put the burner in at an angle, using cast pipe as a consumable (ie it tended to burn away, very slowly). I used propane and forced air from a squirrel cage blower with a gate valve. I put firebrick at front and back as needed for the work and yes it did tend to break with expansion contraction, but I just kept re-using it as it shrunk. I forged and forge welded regularly for many years with it. The borax was hard on the bottom, I could have re-cast it after 10 years of use (but I didn't). Nowadays some coat the cement with a glaze and swear by it.

    Woo-hoo!! Only advice I can really relate at this point.. Make sure you adhere to the cure time for the cement. Saw a guy use some similar stuff and fired it up a day after and it started crumbling pretty badly.
    Now you're getting me excited to build one of these!!

    Jeremy, You would have been better off leaving the end cut off put a hinge on it because kaowool does not last for ever and you will need to reline it eventually. Just saying nice build though the only other thing I may have done since you are only using one burner I would have centered it. Unless this was planed to latter put another burner to be able to reach welding temps easier. Either way nice build. Sincerely ,Martin at M/S Blacksmithing and Blades

    Jeremy I used a refractory mix for my pizza oven I built. you can use vermiculite and portland cement Mixture you can evenly fill voids and it will give you great insulation property I run my Pizza oven at 900 deg and the outside of the brick remains cool.

    Hey Jeremy, I used the same fire bricks and refractory cement as you did in your build and I have found that they don't hold up super well in my forge. The bricks I used as doors tend to crack and fall apart and the cement cracks and peels off pretty quickly. Just thought I'd let you know.

      Kaowool. He's using any storebrand refractory cement, iirc anything that can go up to 3000 or so is acceptable. I use Mizzou castable plus in my own forge.

  • @stephenranti173
    @stephenranti173 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been doing a lot of research on these and was wondering why you used the refractory cement? Most of the ones I've seen online use a rigidizer and then a couple coats of ITC-100? Just wondering.

    It looks like that calf issue has been resolved.

  • @msblades5382
    @msblades5382 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    oh you should have used a ridgidizer and some itc to coat that kaowool after kaowool is heated it gets rather fragile and becomes airborn every time you light it. ceramic fiber is far worse than insolation . hope this helps

    • @j.darmonblades5006
      @j.darmonblades5006 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shan Moldovan I'm thinking of applying this same or similar technique for my new forge. Shouldn't the cement suffice if it is covering all of the kaowool? Thanks.

    • @msblades5382
      @msblades5382 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      J. Darmon Blades
      It may but id be worried about cracking. Even with a Ridgidizor the kaowool wears out rather fast. this is specifically why I use insulation fire brick rather than kaowool in a sence it is safer and you dont have to worry about the breakdown of the kaowool.Not to mention my forge is not round but I am confident that insulation fire brick can be modified to fit round . Either way its just my preference you see many forges that use kaowool as a working surface but mine is used as a backup lining behind my soft fire brick. I sapose if you use like a saitinite clay as a coating you will probably be ok the other thing I would use is a i think its called tci 100 it is used in kilms to direct the heat back at you piece. fyi the easier you make it to reline will help rather than having a solid shell instead of a door.
      Thanks for the inquiry, Martin Moldovan at M/ S Blacksmithing and Blades

    How is the propane tank material going to hold up to the temperature.

    • @Simplelittlelife
      @Simplelittlelife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quad Life On The Ridge so far it's fine. Also it's so well insulated that it doesn't get that hot (compared to the inside) the steel has turned blue in a few places and straw in others so I think it will last long enough. Cheers👍

      Oh. Because may dad and I are building a forge out of one of those big propain tanks and i was wondering how it would hold up to the 2,000+ degrees ( Fahrenheit ) that the torches would put out. Thanks for the information.

    So I guess it doesn't matter if you don't rigidize the insalated blanket ??

    • @kobochy8108
      @kobochy8108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, if his cement ever cracks he needs to cut the forge off and not use it till its fixed. The wool is carcinogenic and will give you cancer without all necessary precautions. Which is necessary even if you rigidize, buuuut the wool is much less likely to go airborne of its been hardened

      i got itc and kast 'olite. im thinking of using sodium silicate as a high temp adhesive; rigidize the kaowool also with sodium silicate? then 3 layers of itc (1st layer the thickest) then kast 'olite.. i think.. is this a wrong approach?

  • @jojosaristo9271

  • @jcarmack0946
    @jcarmack0946 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jeremy, you need to get some ITC 100-HT refractory coating to coat your kaowool. It makes your forge more efficient and allows for less fuel use to get up to forging temperature. www.hightemptools.com/itcproducts.html
