I've always wanted to build a decent forge and I finally got around to it. There's going to be some fun times ahead, learning and making all sorts of cool things!
The kit worked out awesome! It was great having everything in the kit made to fit a 9kg gas bottle. There wasn't any guess work or ordering more material than what was needed and it also has the same burner that Alec Steele uses (I believe). It's a nice bit of kit!
I got the kit from GameCo Artisan Supplies. They were also very helpful in guiding me through the process of the build, answering questions along the way.

My grandfather was a lead blacksmith for a Coal Company in Pennsylvania. I wish I could have met him I wish I could have learned some of his trade but I always enjoy a true Craftsman like yourself. How can you possibly see and envision a project so far ahead. You're a true fabricator and a true artist.

Pask Makes hey Pask the Making Time Podcast is having a “no forge” forging challenge. The idea is to get people interested in the black arts. I mean Blacksmithing with just the things most people have available. Building a forge is allowed. 👊🏼

As for "stupid people", my brother is a firefighter. He responded to a garage fire where, get this, the guys working on a car used a cigarette lighter to check the fuel level in the gas tank. Hence why my brother says, nobody calls the fire department for doing something smart.
Why didn't you add how long it will smell like the strongest gas smell there will ever SMELL!
And to add one more thing.
I've made a pot belly stove out of propane tank. But used a 100 gallon tank and cut it down. The wall thickness is alot thicker.
It seems to me if some one would spend all the time editing you would construct something that would last. Every time you heat up and cool down you lose a little material in your cylinder.
But good job with following whatever directions you were following.

Nice work, you have a lot of crazy projects that often are very time involved, but this one is relatively straight forward in comparison. When I was younger my roommate had a forge and I would melt beer cans in it while I was wasting time in the shop. Never forged anything then, but it is never too late.

There's nothing like making your own tools and equipment. Yes, it can be bought for less than the cost of making it but there's no pride in that. Good job!
I really dig the clever use of props and text placement for getting across build specs or techniques without using dialogue. I also really appreciate the thought you put into the”cinematography” of your camera work. Maker and film artist.

Made my own forge around 5 years ago. So much fun. I really want to see you make a power hammer. I can't figure out an affordable way to make my own, and I know someone like you could figure it out.
That really would be a fun project - I'll get my thinking cap on! ;)
This guy has a power hammer build that seems easy enough and that probably costs very little (th-cam.com/video/W_eiTSk7FrA/w-d-xo.html). He sells the plans on his website, but honestly, if you have a good understanding of mechanical principles and movement, you could probably build it just by watching this or the many other videos of those who have built the same machine from those plans. I personally enjoy the challenge that comes with replicating from observation. Whilst it may not be an industrial quality machine, it's enough to get you started. I haven't built it yet, but it's on my list of things to do when I have time. Regards.

If you are using an old gas cylinder, after you remove the valve fill it with water, this will ensure no gas is left in the cylinder. Or you may find the next step of cutting, quite interesting . 😉
You'll be lucky if you find the next step of cutting at all. Most people who get blown up don't even have time to say "oh shit!", before they go see the big man upstairs.
So, you cut open a propane tank with a cutting torch w/out cleaning it first and you blew yourself up.
Q: Is it true that when you die you see a bright light?
A: if you are dumb enough to watch the explosion, Yes!
Q: did you see your life flash before your eyes?
A: No, but I did see pieces of the tank, my arms and the torch fly past my head!

Nobody wants you to get hurt,that's a good thing. Cut em some slack. And just FYI I have seen new empty tanks pop when the paint residue or steel protective anti-oxident is heated and produces smoke which in turn burns. Which reminds me dad was in Japan in 45 and they had llittle gasoline so they would start it on gas then there was a wood stove mounted on the back of the bus with a 6" duct running over the roof down to the carb intake and the motors ran on smoke. The good part when they came to a hill they had to get down and push it up the hill. I just wish I had film of that. Very nice work and great attention to detail !
Great to see someone who does this properly. If you add a thin layer of refractory in the walls and ceiling too it will be more durable and you're safer from cancerous fibers coming loose from the blanket.

Was inspired to look at your photography after seeing what a talented maker you are. My goodness, you have an eye for great shots. Some beautiful pictures of Scotland and England, really like the running river, such a well framed dynamic shot.

Thanks, built and waiting for cement and paint to dry. Took the tank handle and welded it to the top to make a portable unit. Welded 6 tabs around the opening (pre-drilled for 1/4" self tapping screws) to make eventual rebuilding easier. Found the components easy enough to source. I had the old non-check-valve tank, purged it, then pulled the valve and inverted the tank (propane is heavier than air, natural gas is lighter than air) for several days, then additionally vented with shop air hose. Propane vaporizes at -44 degrees so there is no possibility of liquid propane once pressure is purged and outside on a sunny 50 degree day, there could be vapor remaining if left open with valve opening up. You can fill the tank with water and "float" the vapor out, or simply invert, in effect pouring out the vapor. This should take a few hours, I let mine sit for 2 days. Additionally, using a long mechanics blow-gun probe, to force the vapor out is added insurance. NOTE: the odor added to propane is a sulfur compound (ethyl mercaptan) that the human nose can detect in very small concentrations, this odor can linger long after the propane is fully dissipated. If this makes you nervous, fill tank with water and detergent and rinse before cutting.

If you want to make something easy and not too expensive theres an awesome video on it from essential craftsman. It only requires simple tools and can be built in a fery short amount of time. I built that forge and it works very well for the projects I use it for.
I had no idea what I was watching but that's such a well constructed and balanced clip it held my attention until I figured it out. Brilliant editing

Is there any danger in grinding a pressure vessel after you've "uncorked" it?
No worries Boris! There's no danger with a new bottle! Much easier than messing around flushing out a used bottle! :)
I would fill it once with water and drain it before I cut.
Ah. A new bottle is even safer...
it is amlost certain to explode, if you use an old tank and do not wash it out. Flush out old tanks with water. Fill them up 2 or 3 times before cutting them.
Great new video style Pask! On IG I had commented that it would have looked cool if it was yellow like a smiley face or a Minion, but I think you were right in making it silver. It looks great and knife making is very interesting and I am sure you will be fantastic at it!

I appreciate seeing this even if I am not going to go out tomorrow & build a forge. But now when I finally do I'll have a bit more on my mind than before, it's like fine tuning I guess you might say! I used that exact kit from Gameco. I found the lack of any instructions alarming, especially for the burners. I honestly had fear starting them up because I had no idea whether I had them set up right or not.
I found them very helpful and answered a few questions I had, you should've got in touch with them if you were unsure and they would have put you right! Hopefully you set it up right and you're having fun with it! I'm hopefully going to start on my first knife later this week! :)
Pask Makes I got in touch and they literally sent me links to 2 videos that Corin has on TH-cam where he makes a forge using similar stuff and one where he talks about the burners. Neither answered the questions that I had asked. I’ve got it to the point of firing up and have lit the burners outside of the forge but I’m not 100% confident that I’m not going to kill myself using burners that I’ve got no instructions on and have no idea what’s high/low airflow and the regulator that came with the burners seems to spin freely so I don’t know if that is on/off or whatever either. I’ve bought a lot of things from them over the past few years and my only issue with them as a company is that there’s never instructions included for anything they sell.

Looks good, the one suggestion I would make is also to coat the rest of the inside with refractory, both for heat retention, and to give your Kaowool more life. Rigidizer is good, but over time it will still spall just from the action of the Jet. Also, if you have a ceramics supply they make sacrifical kiln floors that will also increase the life of your castable. if you use any kind of flux it will eat the floor like acid
