Marty is my all time favorite guitarist in my mind there is no one better. He's one of those guys as soon as you hear his playing you know it's him.

Excellent, Marty's playing took Megadeth to a whole new level. His phrasing, exotic scales, and down to earth nature kept that band fresh and always pushing boundaries. They haven't been the same without him.

Ellis Gordon, Mustaine actually started improving his soloing after he got Marty in the band.
Granted, a major part of it was Mustaine being sober & open to the idea of learning. But, Mustaine adopted more of Friedman’s techniques into his own playing.
Since, Mustaine now learns from every new lead player he hires.
But, Friedman put Mustaine on the path to improvement.

I remember getting "Dragon's Kiss" on cassette (yeah, I'm old). The album was great but the big takeaway, for me, was Marty's love of using interesting and unusual scales and modes. He got me into African, Arabic and Asian influences and using them in different ways. If nothing else, it's a great learning tool. Another great lesson... as usual. Cheers.

In addition to the exotic scales, the bends Friedman uses (& the bends Poland uses) are what I love most about his playing.

Besides Marty’s great different approach with exotic scales his bends & vibrato are what amaze me. Very hard too cop his solos as his bends are very hard. Great Lesson 🍺’ski thanks again!

Okay you got me, Marty is one of my all time favorite players. I have met him and he was a super nice guy and when you mix that in with his style (his own style) it just really resonates with me. I really like the licks you picked out and I can't wait to get home from work to pick up my guitar and try them out. Thank you for the video very good stuff. Also Marty's feel is so different, like his accent notes fall different than most peoples and then his bends that he incorporates are the icing on the cake. Cheers and once again great playing on your part as well. You are my favorite to watch on TH-cam.

Before Cacophony, Marty was in a very early 80s band called HAWAII. Check out the phenomenal instrumental called "Rhapsody in Black." You'll hear a lovely segment in there that Marty recycled later on in "Concerto" from the 1st Cacophony album!

Hi Dave, I loved the lesson! Marty absolutely has a completely unique approach to playing and it’s great that you broke down some of his signature licks. Hey, I’m new to your channel, but have you done any videos about either Paul Wardingham or Per Nillson? I’m sure you’re aware of both of these monstrous players and would LOVE to hear you break down their styles a bit. Best I can describe their styles are futuristic sci fi post apocalyptic steampunk cyborg shred lol. Especially Wardingham wow his style just excites me. I’m not super knowledgeable on scales I’ve always just been a kind of get-my-hands dirty kind of player but I know it’s to my detriment after 33 plus years of doing it that way. Anyways take a listen to anything from these guys…for Per I especially love his works with his band Scar Symmetry on their album The Singularity-Phase I and the solos on Neohuman are just other worldly. For Paul Wardingham…sheesh pick anything from him…maybe Earth 2.0 is a great representation of his spacey style shred. Thanks Dave!

Still have both Cacophony "albums" on cassette (and CD of course), as well as both Marty and Jason's debut solo albums on cassette (and again, on CD too lol).
Loved both of their playing right from the start.
Marty's "Scenes" still gets an occasional listen and, like the licks in this lesson, contains many excellent examples of his playing without the use of distortion. In fact I'd say there's more playing without distortion than with on that album.
[Sigh] I just realized... Marty gave us "Wall of Sound" and the best I can do is "Wall of Text" with this verbose comment. Oh well. Great lesson. Cheers!

I must admit that I don’t know too much about Marty other than he is very well respected. Well worth investigating!
As for improving technique, you are absolutely right: buy a valve amp and play clean, that will highlight all the sloppiness in a second 😃

Awesome lesson, as usual! Marty is such an unique player, I'm not really into shredding but can't get enough of his stuff. And the ideas you analysed are awesome. On future videos, could you talk about the picking hand? You seem to have a great technique and your tips on that would add greatly (even more) to your videos. Keep on with this great channel!

Great video David. Marty is such an outstanding and distinctive guitarist. His solos still blow my mind. Talking of unique guitarists, would you consider doing a video on Ian D'Sa from Canadian punk band Billy Talent? His style is very interesting, combining drop D power chords with simultaneous melodies, sounding like 2 guitars. Songs like River Below and This Suffering are good examples.

😎Even though I'm not very familiar with Marty's work, I know he's a talented guitarist and this 34All definitely gives me something to chew on as I've been in need of something a bit different of late to break out of a rut where even though I have been creating some new material, it just hasn't been exciting enough the last few months.

In classical music they think about scales as in brightness. Major is in the middle and as you sharpen any note it is a brighter scale. This means there are dozen and dozens of scales far more than guitar players know.
If you want to hear how incredible they can sound you have to get into classical music. It's all there to be explored and learned. There are also more modes than guitar players know like super Locrian ect..

It's not easy if you don't practice you technique for muting etc to make it sound smooth

Greetings from 🇫🇮 Finland, the land of excellent english speakers. Interpreter was probably around for the guitar/music theory jargon. Those musical terms may not be in everyone's vocabulary. Also no internet at the time, so on to the news stand to buy Guitar Player magazine. Anyway, the japanese scale was already in his pocket, and he has done a album full of it, called Scenes. Very nice album. I bought my CD copy for 3$ cause it missed the cover. th-cam.com/video/modayTg2VB0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=W2d3jxvdZfBVmtQG
