  • 🎥 One often overlooked part of consulting interviews is answering the question "why do you want to work here?" For many candidates, the answer seems obvious: because it's a great opportunity! But top consulting firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain want more nuanced and personal answers. In this mini lesson, our ex-BCG Founder, Kenton Kivestu, shares three key tips on how to approach answering this question.

    Hi Kenton - I have been following your videos for a while. Thank you so much for the website and the videos - they are very helpful. I have a question though - Is Kearney on the same level as MBB? If not, would you place it above Deloitte/Accenture or below them?

    I've recently come upon your videos and they are very helpful! One thing I am worried about is work experience. What kind of things are these consultant firms looking for in candidates/potential hires in terms of previous/past experiences?

    Hi Ken, great tips but I was wondering the all my reasons apply to all three of them i.e. MBB. So, in this case how do you tackle e.g. why McKinsey, why not BCG or Bain?

    Thanks Ken. These videos are so well-structured. They can apply for many different industries and career paths in consultancy. Keep up the great work!

    Hi Kevin!
    Great video. 1 question though; if one has an engineering degree from a solid university BUT don't have good grades or any consulting experience BUT a lot of leadership-based curricular activities, do I have a chance to get an interview? I also applied to offices which are not based in stockholm (where's I am located) but to "off" places like Abu dhabi and Riyadh, does this mean any type of advantage for me as applicant?

    Love your video Ken!
    How would you answer: what would you do if you
    couldn‘t do consulting? 🙂

      I think it's a pretty straightforward question: I'd just focus on whatever other job type you'd most like to do. Just make sure you can articulate what that is, why you're interested in it -> ideally that would be something that you could satisfy maximally in consulting (hence why it'd be first pick)

    Thank you for the video. I have one question: if you’re interviewing for one of MBB, let’s say McKinsey, and they ask you the question, do you have to answer a reason that only applies to McKinsey and not Bain nor BCG? Should you give a reason why you chose McKinsey over Bain and BCG, or is it ok if you give a reason that could apply to any MBB firms?

    • @rocketblocks
      @rocketblocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the first step is to always lead with an authentic answer that you really believe in because that will come through. Beyond that, if it applies to all 3 that's ok but I imagine if you research the firms a lot and network, you'll find some specific tidbits that can help

    I watch all of your videos and they are extremely helpful! I have one question. Can you please let me know what are the target business schools (MBA) in Germany for the MBG firms? Also how can one improve their chances of getting an interview without a target B school pedigree?

    • @rocketblocks
      @rocketblocks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Re: non-target schools, that's a good topic that I'll do a video on. In the meantime, here are some thoughts from our blog on that very topic: www.rocketblocks.me/blog/non-target-school.php

    Hey Ken, thanks for the awesome video. I am just wondering though, is it okay to talk about the fact that you will not stay at the firm after a while like in your example about running a tech startup? Is it not true that MBB only wish to hire consultants who would like to and have the potential to become partners?

    • @rocketblocks
      @rocketblocks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, I think it's OK to allude to the fact that you might not be a consultant for your whole career. The firms know that the percent of incoming recruits who will go on to be partners is incredibly small - so what's important is that you demonstrate the right skills to do so rather than the predetermined stance that you'll pursue that against all other opportunities

    I wants to know,which MBA field would be most suitable for make a place at McKinsey.Either Operations or Marketing?
    I’m engineering graduate specialised in mechanical.

    • @rocketblocks
      @rocketblocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think either could work, so I'd pick whichever you have more natural interest in (e.g., even general mgmt could work - many US programs don't require specialization). One thing I'd add is that I think quantitative marketing is exciting and newer and could be a useful skillset for a lot of careers

    Well done. Personally, I would drop McKinsey from your list. Former CEO indicted, 15mil paid yesterday from conflicts, thrown out of South Africa...the list goes on.
