  • Chamberlain and MyQ have been rug pulling their customers over the last couple of weeks, with an announcement that they were cutting of API access to all of their users, forcing all of those users to use the MyQ app and suffer a much worse experience. Let's talk about the situation and what you can do in the future to make sure this never happens in your smart home again.

As one of the 20,000 who experienced this first hand I can sum up the experience. I went from being excited that chamberlin built in this functionality out of the box to appreciating the community for fixing the MyQ integration(multiple times) to viewing Chamberlin as a villian for shutting down 0.2% of their user base who just want to use the hardware they bought to make their lifes easier.

In the Netherlands, smart utility meters are required to have a local interface to which you can connect. The protocol even needs to be implemented according to a standard. It would be so nice to have this requirement for all smart home appliances in the EU. Especially since the energy grid is changing and we need more interoperability to unfuck this.

I wish UK did similar with the smart meters as they already have ZigBee in the meter units. The in home displays could expose an API/MQTT endpoint to scrape data from since they're connected to WiFi anyways.
I have a useless IHD that was provided by my previous supplier and whilst it still works and sits on WiFi, it doesn't submit anything to the cloud because the provider (Bulb) went bust. The manufacturer Chameleon wants me to buy the same exact thing again with a different firmware to rely on their cloud service to pool for current readings...

That said, after we moved it took a while to find unpack and set up our google devices. We'd find ourselves says, "Okay, google, what time is it?" Or "Okay, google, how long does it take to get to...." because it was second nature, and while it isn't a big deal to go pick up our phone from the other room or whatever -- it did make my family more aware of how much they've come to depend on things I pushed for.

I just took the board out of a rf remote and soldered a home assistant relay to the button contacts. The remote was powered by a single 3v 2032 battery, so the 3.3v supplied from the esp32 powers the board, no battery is needed. I added a magnetic reed switch to the garage door to tell me when the door is open through home assistant, with notifications to my phone and smartwatch. I happen to have a Genie opener, but the principle is the same. Serial bus problem solved, isolated, so no voltage problems.

I've hooked OpenGarage to the push to operate contacts on two garages. They have ultrasonic distance sensors so mounted to the ceiling can tell if there's a vehicle present and, for up and over doors, if the door is open or closed. The newer model has a second set of contacts for a wired door position sensor which I used for my roller door where the distance sensor can't see the door.
HA integration works great and the board / case is well built around an ESP 8266 so simple to connect over WiFi.

It’s an excuse. Any half-way competent engineer building an infrastructure capable of supporting 10 million users should have already built in safeguards - if only to protect themselves from DDOS attacks. Which they just invited, BTW.
If they had a clue, they would be handing out API keys along with an ‘acceptable use’ document, and disable any API user that falls outside those parameters. No, they want more recurring revenue, whether it’s through licensing fees and advertising to a captive audience. Trouble is, their products are basic and low-turnover. There shouldn’t be a lot of user interaction for use of the basic functions of an appliance. Rather than looking for adjacent product markets and expanding into them, they’re attempting to squeeze their installed base without adding any value.
Garage lighting is an obvious one, anti-theft addons is another (theft of tools and bikes from an open garage is a big problem, for example). Even a dumb mechanical ‘package drop’ product would make more sense than MyQ/Amazon Key.

The Rug pull really really sucks. I can't stand losing functionality I used to always have. I totally plan on voting with my wallet, but the problem in this case is that for both residential and commercial applications Chamberlain/Liftmaster are the makers of the vast majority of garage and gate openers in the United States. As one of those myq users, I've been aiming to switch as much to local-only control for a while now, and kept putting off the garage door since for the last while, the myq integration has actually been pretty good for me. So this incident gave me the "opportunity" to switch to something local for it as well. Thanks for this video. I have been unhappy with MyQ from the outset, but as you say they have virtually a monopoly on openers in the US. I took this opportunity to learn a bit about hardware and came up with my own solution. There is a device called the Aqara Dual Relay Module T2. You can use it to trigger electrical pulses. Because my garage door is newer, I couldn’t just wire it into the opener, so instead I took a backup remote I had laying around and soldered 2 wires from the T2 to the switch on the circuit board inside the remote. It works perfectly. Also, since the T2 has 2 channels, I was able to get a very cheap sensor and wire it into the second channel to report back whether the garage is open or closed. I was able to integrate it into Home Assistant very easily to run all my automations. The whole setup works fantastic and was a very inexpensive and reliable solution! I couldn’t be happier being able to completely remove everything having to do with MyQ from my setup.

That’s nice and simple solution for the problem. I hope that the ratgdo and other similar hacks like yours will gain the attention of the users enough that they wont have many paying customers going forward.
It really grinds my gears when manufacturers make selfish decisions like these to block even that ”0,2%” of the customer base. I actully wish it is a lot bigger amount than that or it grows with announcements like these.
The market is open now for the taking of locally controlled options. Lets see if they catch on popularity among new buyers or users will have to solder remotes again after 10-20 years when the companies deside that they don’t want to support their crappy cloud any more. 😄

As a home integrator I can tell you it even worse then just shutting down the API. The latest Charberlain doors use a proprietary wireless (maybe blluetooth who knows) standard to talk to the door. The 2 wires provide the power to the button. Contact closure what used to open and close the door doesn't work anymore. Even soldering contact closure on the buttons directly for the smart ones under us creates conditions the door will open on it self randomly. So if you want to integrate your garage door into a 3rd party don't buy MyQ from Chamberlain and the other brands they sell .

  • @dukeplc

Making my own garage door integration was my very first HA project. Using ESPHome, I have opened/closed/moving functionality as well as a parking sensor. I can open and close remotely and get a notification that the door isn't closed if I leave home and don't close it. Garage temp/humidity is displayed and a sensor tells me if there is movement in the garage. I didn't use MyQ because of the reasons stated in this vid. With today's power of HA, there are very few cloud based solutions needed. Just make your own. That's the reason we do this crazy thing, right?

Here in NZ we are so short of options for "open" products that I've been waiting years for product lines that promise support for Zigbee and now Matter. I've had to buy some light switches and power outlets using Tuya in a couple of key places but still waiting before I go wholesale replacement of electrical fittings. Have bought Philips Hue products with Zigbee support and they're working well but want coordinated fittings.
This video is a timely reminder to keep waiting. Currently in the process of swapping my Ring doorbell for the Reolink sitting on my desk that you featured recently!

Been using a Refoss/Meross device with my Chamberlain 'MyQ enabled' GDO since buying it three years ago. Low cost and works perfectly with Google and Alexa, as well as locally over the network if desired. It also uses a dedicated physical position sensor to ensure the door itself is actually open or closed.

I installed a Chamberlain (Merlin, but same same) motor earlier in the year and was chuffed to see it was integrated with HA - but the add on thing for it was quite expensive. I bought a Meross controller off Amazon for 1/3 of the price and it works perfectly fine for us - integrates perfectly into HA too.

I am very glad I modified my garage door (Merlin) using a Shelly 1 Relay now. The relay is just wired into the door button points they have on the outside of the control box for external switches, and the contact points for the door sensor are also wired into the relay. So for $17 AUD I made my garage door "smart", and using Home assistant widgets with authentication enabled my figerprint opens my garage from my phone. I also used zones so when my wife is halfway up our road heading home the doors opens, works great.

I have a MyQ garage door opener - and was affected. The main reason - the GDO has a built in battery and works even during a power outage - a unique feature at the time. I cannot help but wonder if there was any polling that the Home Assistant integration needed to do was part of the issue.
Personally, I'll be disconnecting my GDO from the cloud. Instead, I have an ELK M1 hooked up to Home Assistant and have wired an output on this to an extra garage door remote button. The door magnetic sensor is connected to the Elk M1 as an alarm zone. So - I can both monitor and control my garage door directly from Home Assistant via Elk. A fully local solution. All I need now is a 'virutal' Garage Door device with status driven from one entity and control offered through another (and I know this soliution is there somewhere for me to find!)
When the GDO needs replacing - Chamberlain can be sure I will go out of my way to buy a different brand.
Edit: I have decided to also add a Zooz ZEN17 (relay) and ZSE43 (tilt acceleration sensor) so I can make this natively zwave.

I really enjoy your content - I have a content request/suggestion - can you create a video covering setting up two-way audio in HA - there are some solutions out there but the documentation is pretty challenging for moderate to novice video and audio streaming users. This is a important function that would allow HA truly to replace any video security solution. Right now even if you get it working, it’s buggy at best.
No worries if not - thank you for everything you do! I’ve bought several everything presence sensors and love them!

Hated the idea of subscribing to their proprietary "smart home" that is MyQ so grabbed an OpenGarage instead. Turns out it was the correct choice to make.

I have a lift aster opener, but an older one that works with a simple push button 2004-ish). I’ve had myQ for years-long before I began with home assistant. I have fashioned a Shelly relay and a couple reed switches to do the job as the hookup channel demonstrated. I began this conversion before this debacle as twice my myQ randomly opened my garage with no one home. The Shelly Works great. If I need to replace this opener, it won’t be a chamberlain made brand.

My garage door setup is a Z-Wave Zooz ZEN17 Universal Relay. I can remotely open and close my garage door and can also get the status of it as well as the access door so I know if either door is open. No cloud is needed, just home assistant. It's also a non-battery solution, meaning that it's constantly online and the door sensors are hard-wired (non batteries) and I can ping the device at any time and get the status of either door. Status changes are instantaneous within Home Assistant.

I'm betting the 0.2% is accurate. I'm also betting about 0.2% of their huge install base uses smart homes beyond just the App, and I don't think the App users are terribly prevalent either. They're going to cherry pick the statistics that make them sound the most in the right. The "DDOS" attacks may just be as simple as "we get a bunch of denied logins when we blow up people's API logins, we have decided this is an attack". In my home the previous owners installed a MyQ garage door. I'll likely use the Meross system to get it back under my control after I verify compatibility. If I ever replace the opener, it wont be a Chamberlain.

I use a zwave Garage door opener. I believe the exact model is discontinued but being local it still works. Had to re-solder the push controller on the wall as it now has smarts to keep you from using any button but they are so cheap they exposed their own push button and I wired into that. Sure violated warranty but probably any third party integration will.

I wonder if you could redirect the local DNS record to a docker container and someone could write a program that allows you to run a MyQ like server that lets you control a handful of doors.
    OR
If you can flash the boards on MyQ controlled GDOs to run open source software.

It isn't just about future compatibility where local control is king, Optus, a major ISP and Telco in Aus, had a massive outage last week. There were a number of news reports of people not being able to use their smart home devices due to having no internet. One was a disabled lady who couldn't physically move and was stuck with curtains and lights that she couldn't use.
Always make sure devices can work locally and preferably without the smarts i.e. keep normal light switches but put smart devices behind them so if the main controller goes down you can still operate the lights.

Having the magnetic reed sensor to detect an open door is awesome.
Plus, with Tasmota open-source firmware running on the Shelly, it can respond to local HTTP REST requests to open and close the door. This allows a home-screen button on your phone to control the door, using the "HTTP Shortcuts" app.

I have 4 garage doors. 3 are MyQ. I bought a myQ hub for my Marantec, but couldn't get it to work, so I had to find a workaround. I ended up just using a Shelly relay and it works perfectly and cheaply. I believe I got the idea from Smart Home Solver. All it does is the electrical equivalent of pushing the wall switch button and reading a reed switch contact sensor. It's not any more difficult than the MyQ installation. I guess I will be converting the other three doors with the built in MyQ to use the Shelly as well.
