      I had a pair of blue ones as a teen. Refused to wear them for a year because I didn't want to ruin them. And when I finally did, I'm sure they made me run faster. At least, in my head they deffo did.
      Am gutted to know there wasn't springs in them now though lol

      @@StigPrice No way. I bought about 6 pairs over from India. They were selling them everywhere at time as they were being made there. So cheap. I never wore them as they looked so odd, and ended up throwing them away. I never saw anyone ever wear them and thought they were a fad at the time.

      @@dd776 don't forget I was a kid, so the idea of springs in your shoes that can make you jump higher and run faster appealed to me lol..

      @@StigPrice I am the same. I just thought the Shox looked so weird. I bought as many different ones as I could find (hence why I got 6). There was one pair that had Shox springs running the whole length of the shoe, from heel to toe!!

    The big reason most of these things turn out to be gimmicks as far as athletic benefits is because if you're running and jumping and trying to make quick lateral movements you're not gonna be on your heels, but the balls of your feet unless you like shin splints. Very few companies make shoes that have anything special going on in that part of the shoes (some asics have a gel layer I believe) and the ones that do don't advertise them making you jump higher but reducing wear and tear on your body. The reality is those nba players could perform those same feats wearing just about any practical shoe, but nike knows how to market if nothing else.

    • @vulekv93
      @vulekv93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Asics is a fraud, there is no gel layer, it's just a small gimicky patch, unfortunately.

    • @Tang-qi6zw
      @Tang-qi6zw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Strangely enough, Nike is one of the companies that do the gimmick stuff in the forefoot, with the Pegasus having air units under the forefoot.
      But you also have brands like Skechers putting the “M-Plate” (a shaped carbon plate) under the forefoot, and advertising energy return and stride efficiency.

    • @publicrelations9612
      @publicrelations9612 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Whilst I agree with the conclusion I don’t think it’s totally true. Yes you are leading and landing mostly on the balls of your feet but in reality players do use the heels more often. In the dynamism of a game you not able to control that especially when other also have an impact on how you land. So a lot of the real tech is extremely simple cushioning. That said no one shoe ever made will make you a better player. You can play or you can’t. So ultimately agree its gimmicks for most part. Simple cushioning in most standard trainers is really effective.

    • @VageG0zer
      @VageG0zer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Then you haven't been paying attention to the hype of a carbon fibre plate in the soles of running shoes. (supposed to act like a spring to give the runner more forward momentum). There is a discussion going on at the moment whether or not these kinds of shoes are a mechanical advantage, and if they should be banned.

  • @olivialambert4124

    The problem is air is just a better spring material. It's a very progressive spring which means you get a softer shoe at low compression, ie walking, whilst still getting a hard spring at high compression when you need the performance. Indeed that's precisely why it's used in a lot of highly engineered applications like motorsports. They will mix in regular steel springs to balance the springs progression whereas shoes use foam for that, but then combine the very lightweight and cheap nature of that construction and it's an easy choice.
    As a side note, I know the channel's stance is that air does nothing but having had the air pocket blow out I can say with confidence there's a substantial difference between when there was air and post-burst. Still is a huge difference to this day comparing my two pairs. Given the air is punctured as part of the testing it would probably be wise to test both before and after the air is gone, perhaps piercing the bubble with a knife to ensure there's a large enough outlet to properly compare.

    I kept mine from high school, until recently. About a year ago I decided I would wear them again as they still looked new. Unfortunately, the socks and the wedge part of it disintegrated into a powder after only wearing them for a day. That’s when i decided it was time to throw them out despite all the good memories I made when the them.☹️

    Hey Rose Anvil, could give ratings on cutting the tongue how you give ratings for cutting the back heel of the shoe? I think it would be a good add.

    Nike stole this shoe design from my father. He walked into Nike office in chicago and didn’t have a patient on his design. MARK STEVEN CRUTCHER Sr. , my father, changed shoe history forever and will never get credit. He is defeated and embarrassed everytime I bring it up. He created the design before I was born and I saw the drawings in the early 90’s. I’m going to expose it all and restore my father’s name.
    My father came up with this idea after losing a 5 on 5 and being clowned. He went home and took the springs out of the mattress, took apart his sneakers and taped the springs to his shoes. When my father explained the show to Nike, it was supposed to have real springs in it. Nike took stole the design and didn’t even perfect what my father MARK STEVEN CRUTCHER SR. of Chicago, Illinois Invented. It was only supposed to make athletes jump higher as he did after installing the springs. Thank you for your video.

    I think the Nike shocks would have worked if they would have made different weight capacity shocks so you buy the shoe that fit your weight zone and of course size

    There are numerous variations in the Shox models. Some have air in the forefoot and some have Shox in the forefoot.
    The basketball models have even stiffer Shox columns.

    I always knew it was just foam, even back then. It was supposed to be "Air infused" foam. When I first heard that I thought, well, that's all types of foam. 🤣

    Those were my favorite Nikes ever. They had those in that lab thing, or whatever they called it, where you could choose the color for every part. I paid over 200 for them but it was by far the best shoes I ever heard. I wore them every day and they lasted like 5 years. They held up better by far than any other Nike shoes I've had and I only buy Nike. I sluice love another pair of them. One of the best looking shoes they ever made too.

    What was the "energy transfer" sneaker... late 90's.
    As you'd step air would transfer from the ball of your foot to the heel... and vice-versa.
    Reebok most likely, white leather/faux leather... very wide and stable, I loved them.

    I wore this at work selling shoes because while not great for running they were awesome to be on the feet all day. Even now i have 2 pair still going at over 20 years. I should wear them more at my footwear sales job.

    I had a different version in high school that I played basketball in for a few seasons. They were my favorite I ever played in, but I think it had more to do with the traction, how they fit my foot shape well and the comfort of the upper. I tried hooping in them last year (15+ years later) and the #shockpoppedoff though.

    The heels always wore out too fast; they needed thicker heels for what they were charging for them. But they were very comfortable and were always my favorites Nike shoe.

    Heres the thing these are a retro and infact the original run of shox in 2000 had metal spring coils within the shox, abd also they had full grain leather where the white areas are

    I feel like the bounce plate technologies of today kind of achieve what Shox WANTED to happen but yes, I remember being incredibly disappointed in every pair of these I ever got. Your explanation was on point, well done.

    Ooo sweet! I kept meaning to suggest doing a video on Shox. I have 2 pairs that I designed myself in the early 2000's. Still have them both. The original pair squeaks now (have been after a few years of wearing them but I did wear them ALL the time) but the second pair is still pretty much in the same condition as when I got them albeit a little discoloring. But I am thinking one of the shocks became unglued at some point... I really thought they had some type of spring...how sad.
