Tutorial 3DS Max rescaling objects

  • In this video I'm covering how to rescale your model within 3DS Max.
    This problem occurs when you've brought in an asset but the scale is completely wrong. Normally you then would like to rescale to the correct size.
    This tutorial shows how to rescale it - normally you'll be able to do this and have it go to exactly the right scale.

    I have also found that in the utilities there is a button named measure and it's shows the dimensions of your selection!
    Thank you very much for the video, it helped me a lot to find a way to re-scale without messing up my models! thanks!

    Yepp! With Utilites-->Measure you don´t need to draw boxes.

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this is true. I know you don't need to draw boxes, but I often do as I find it a simple way to get measurements in three dimensions. You can also go to utilities--> measure, that's very true.

      @@TAKMANTechnical Well we know it's not a material point and we know it's not filter. It's not going to be rotation, I mean it could partly be 'rotation' as they say it's too big 'scale' and in the wrong place. But of the last three the most obvious would be translation - as that applies to location in space, size in space and rotation in space - it's all of those factors in one, in terms of X,Y and Z.

    Works perfectly but what if the scale of the material gets upscaled in size as well. How do you retain the original scale of the material

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Christian, for the material you'll want to try reloading the bitmap, that sometimes works, or you can try redoing the UVW on the object. And if it still doesn't work (because it might not) then just adjust the scale of the bitmap so it's wrong in your material editor but loads correctly on the screen. Or, final option, you make sure the object isn't a group, because it won't work on groups, so ungroup it if it is. Then you have to go into 'utilities' and reset xform and then collapse it to EditPoly or EditMesh or Spline, whichever you need. And now, with the xform reset the material will be at the correct scale. Then regroup the object.

    Hey, good tutorial. I've worked abit on a house and added materials but I just noticed its way bigger than everything else in the scene. This likely happend when I merged it into my scene. It was originally a autocad dwg file. But I find it weird how it became so big since the scene is in milimiters and if I link the autocad file instead of merging it it becomes the right size. I use merge cus it gets abit laggy and buggy with linked geometry I find. So what I'm asking is does this tutorial also work if I select multiple objects(my whole house)?

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just group them first and then apply it. If you don't, it will still work, but they won't be in the same place in relation to each other. They'll shoot off all over the place, depending on several factors - their original build location, if they've already been scaled and where the pivot is.

  • @STRIDER_503

    What if the object I want to rescale is grouped under a box? Every time I click rescale, the only object that got enlarged is that box instead the geometries under the hierarchy.

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Strider_503 I don’t really understand. I would ungroup it. Get the objects you want to rescale and attach them all, so they are one edit poly and then rescale. If needed delete the box, or save it elsewhere and then merge it back in after the rescale.
      The other thing that sometimes works, if you have odd behaving geometry, is to get all the polys and detach them. Or you can also create a box, align it to the problem geometry, change it to an edit poly. Now it’s an edit poly attach everything to it. When everything is attached, delete the original box. Does that make sense?

      @@leonleon51 I figured it out by using the "Select and Uniform Scale" tool, since I was only editing a car for racing game and just wanted to enlarge the wheel I wanted to replace for a little bit, so it fits the original wheel size.

    Just select your object and then right-click on Select&Scale button/ Type your scale factor (10 or 0.1) in Offset:World. Quicker and faster. Peace!

    and now on multiple objects please? When trying to rescale the whole scene, multiple objects scale completely wrong.

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      I don't really understand what you are doing.
      Here are two ways, depending on what you are running into.
      If you want to rescale the whole scene, the easiest way is to open a blank max file, then you go to 'customise', 'units set-up' and change the units to the units you want to use. Then you open the max file you want to rescale and when prompted by max to use the file units or the scene units, you say to use the file units. Voila, the scene is in the units you want and should be the correct size. As long as it was the correct size in the other units.
      If the whole thing is wrong, and it's moving when you try to scale it up, then it's scaling based on the pivot point. I'd probably group the whole scene, then rescale, as shown in the tutorial, and then with it the correct size, I'd ungroup it. That should keep everything in the right place while rescaling. Does that make sense?
      Best, Tom

    • @RELFIR
      @RELFIR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      What I had done was selecting the whole scene and try applying the new scaling through both "selection" and "scene" but both came out with some deformed objects.
      I didn't try to group them unfortunately. (Sometimes I forget grouping exists in 3ds max)
      What I had done to get it over with was just exporting the whole scene to then open it in Maya. I grouped them there, scaled and froze them.
      Some time later I had found issues with the exact same objects (that were deforming) however, the materials were all funky so the objects themselves might have been the cause of trouble this whole time.
      My apologies.

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RELFIR Hi, okay. Well it sounds like you solved the problem. I’m not sure what the deal was with the materials. When models are scaled the uvw will be off as it doesn’t know there is a new scale to the model. To correct that you’ll need to reset the xform, which is in the utilities tab, and then put a new uvw in place. Was that the problem or was it something completely different?

    Unit's feet, box, hight five feet. Change units to mm box becomes 3mm high when it should be around 1, 500 mm why oh why.

    • @leonleon51
      @leonleon51  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s because you’ve changed the units. For example if a box is 1 meter and the units are meters, then you change the units to mm the objects don’t change. You’ve just told it one unit is now mm. So the 1 meter object becomes 1 mm.
      That’s why you have to either a) use the rescale tool. Or b) open a new scene and set the units to mm and then import the objects and tell it to rescale on import.

    • @John-mz8rj
      @John-mz8rj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leonleon51 Cheers. The reason for the change was, if I put a push mod or round a spline corner it wouldn't play so I had to put in somthing like 0.01mm to get it work. Will try the reset in the right hand menu's.
