Phil is an OG. The 'king' of deathcore in many minds. As for the country feel, they are very proud of their Tennessee roots. Their logo is a play off of the Tennessee flag. I saw them open for Lorna Shore last night, and he mentioned "back home in TN" which absolutely warmed this lil TN gal's heart 🖤...I can't wait to get back home!
I feel like you guys are downplaying it lol, the very first song on The Valley is about his mother's psychosis and how she thought she was being raped by a demon every night. Then the next song is a hate letter to his stepdad who got his mom addicted to drugs which made her schizophrenia worse, filled with blatant threats towards him lmao. Throwing her into the deep end
@@God_Markov I'd like to see some of the females come forward like Tatiana and Chaney Crabb. Also some other genres of extreme metal, like some Black Metal vocalists, simply because of the different techniques they use too.
I love WC so much!!! I am so glad you have reacted to and analysed a WC song and Phil’s vocals! I have always wondered how he gets so low, delivers with so much power, and enunciates with his vocals. One of, if not, the best in the industry! I am ecstatically happy you picked up on the brackets in the lyrics! There’s more to it considering the visuals presented in the music video and the theme/story and concept of the album, ‘Kin’, and WC’s last album, ‘The Valley’, and the explanation of which and the lyrics accompanying which that Phil has detailed. Great timing for their new single tomorrow, and later, new album!
I requested it years ago when you first reacted to Will Ramos's vocals, but I'm sure it got lost in the shuffle. It'll probably be lost again, but Oliver Ray Aleron from Archspire does deserve your attention. He mixes death metal vocal styles with speed rapping for ridiculously fast, yet clearly enunciated delivery and his breath control is downright insane. He'd probably also be up to having a camera down his throat, too! Oli also does some other techniques you haven't looked into yet, like inhale vocals. Archspire toured with Whitechapel a year or two ago across the US as well, so if you've already talked to Phil you can easily get in contact with Oliver through him!
Oh boy, You have found one of the top 2 best ever deathcore vocalists!!!! time to bust out the hits now! I reccomend "A Bloodsoaked Symphony" for a full harsh vocals song, "When a Demon Defiles a Witch" for a good blend, and "Hickory Creek" for a full clean vocal song. Have fun!!!
I'm beyond excited that you have gone down the Whitechapel trail. They are easily my favorite band. Phil is the freaking man. I highly recommend When a Demon Defiles a Witch, phenomenal song.
Whitechapel has been my favorite band since high school. They've gotten me thru so many tough times and can always count on them to bring me up when I'm down. Thank you for your work in this field as well!

Phil (and Whitechapel) has been maturing a lot recently. Their older work was more about pain and anger, now there's a tinge of sadness and acceptance to it that really shows a maturity that I just love to hear. Their sound is getting more complex and nuanced. Kin is a very special album and it kicks of with THIS MASTERPIECE!

Wow. I have heard a bit of Whitechapel, but never realized that Phil Bozeman had such a good clean singing voice. I've learned so much today! Thank you Elizabeth!
You should definitely check out their 2 newest albums The Valley and Kin (which this song is from). Kin in particular has an amazing display of his clean talents.
Kin is the album I first heard by Whitechapel and this is the opener. It's such an incredible album, check it out. The heavys and the cleans flow so well. It's fantastic
You need to listen to phil bozemans live version from "suicide silence - unanswered" it was the memorial show from their passed away singer, where every song was performed with another death metal vocalist. The Performance of phil bozeman is, to this day, the most impressive death metal live Performance, witch i ever heard in my life! Its just absolutely crazy, what he can do with his gutturals.
And yes, he is creating "all those sounds" in one track. I have listened to Phil since the beginning and seen him live multiple times. His voice is literally that savage. If I would compare Will Ramos and his ablity to anyone, it would be Phil. A total machine.
It's truly amazing how many harsh vocalists have beautiful clean vocals. Then the ability to switch back and forth with no damage is truly astonishing. Thank you so much for your content!
I can't tell you how happy this makes me, Elizabeth. Whitechapel was my introduction and very first deathcore band I got introduced to, and I've been a fan ever since. Phil Bozeman is an amazing man, he has such a sad past, and not going to lie, he has been an inspiration to me. He lost both of his parents at a young age, I lost my mother when I was 19... so when I heard in an interview about him sharing his past and stuff, and how mentally stable he is, it opened my eyes.
I could not be more thrilled to see you finally review Whitechapel! I’ve waited so long! And this video does not disappoint. I absolutely love your analysis, as always. Please, please, do “When A Demon Defiles A Witch” as well. You’ll love the vocal ranges on display and the video is incredible too.
The production on Phil’s vocals is incredible. His voice is obv in the top .1% across heavy music, but the production on their records brings it out incredibly.
A lot of Phil’s more recent lyrics deal with the loss of his parents, so there’s some fairly emotional stuff going on in many of them. He’s an incredible writer, and obviously an insane vocalist. So stoked to finally see you check out Whitechapel. Also…check out “When A Demon Defiles A Witch”! Such a great song.
I highly recommend reacting to Apocalyptica - 'Bittersweet' feat. Lauri Ylönen & Ville Valo The stark contrast between Ville's and Lauri's voices is unbelievable yet they fit so well and sound beautiful together!
Phil is the king of deathcore. His harsh and cleans are so amazing. Got to see Whitechapel live and he sounds exactly the same live as he does on albums. I would love to see a collaboration with Phil, Will Ramos and Alex Terrible. That would be an insane performance
Elizabeth, you really need to put a camera down Spencer Charnas , lead singer for ice nine kills, throat. His ability to mode switch between cleans and harsh is is amazing to listen to.
A Wake In Providence with Adam Mercer doing vocals… especially after their new album he might even be better than Will. Very similar range and near perfect enunciation.
Another thing I love about Whitechapel is Phil writes from his own experience. Which wasn't easy. He lost his father at an early age, his mother suffered from mental illness and addiction (ending in a fatal overdose), and his stepfather was abusive. All this transferred to Phil to some degree as an adult, but he overcame it. Hence his battling his demon here and in Without You/Without Us. He shares this to help others and returns the devotion of their fans fully. Every year on Halloween the band does a hometown show, just to give back.
Elizabeth you should check out his live performance of "Unanswered" at the Mitch Lucker Memorial Show and the music video "When a Demon Defiles a Witch". He is the crème de la crème
They were formed in Nashville, Tennessee, so that explains their little heavy southern country sound. Also this is my favorite deathcore band. Yes I too would love to see you interview Phil, and do research on his throat.
My absolute favorite cut from the album Kin. Such an amazing song. Obviously things are really immaculately produced here, but I’ve seen Whitechapel live a couple of times fairly recently and have also watched some live TH-cam stuff as well. Phil is absolutely the real deal. Exploring his vocals via camera should yield reward.
Phil definitely has some of the greatest harsh vocal enunciation. That’s been one of my favorite things of listening to him and I’m glad you noticed it and pointed it out!
s someone who was only familiar with "This is Exile" era Whitechapel, I was shocked when someone told me Phil had incorporated cleans into his game! I was very surprised to hear how much the band's whole sound had evolved. "The Valley" and "Kin" are very impressive albums.
I've never listened to Whitechapel before, I expected classic deathcore chugging and rhythms but there's so much melody and so many catchy moments. Gonna have to check out all of their stuff now.
I really hope you checked out the whole Kin album. It was the first album I heard by Whitechapel and it's my favourite album. The nuance, the highs the lows, it's blended so well
Elizabeth, you better dig into the story of the albums The Valley and Kin (the last two albums). Phil is basically stripping himself naked with his emotions and his mostly traumatic life. Absolute art!
Phil is a total talent. Whitechapel is carrying deathcore along with Shadow of Intent and Fit For An Autopsy in my opinion. I would recommend a reaction to Shadow of Intent’s The Heretic Prevails! The whole album is Halo themed
I think there are some more bands that are up there, I'd definitely recommend Black Tongue to anyone, even if they don't like Deathcore. Especially their "Nadir" album, Its Downtempo Deathcore, very atmospheric and a doom/sludge metal feel. And their vocalist is absolutely top-tier too.
When Elizabeth was talking about "...turning vulnerabilities into strengths..." it reminded me of one of the things that I think is the appeal of aggressive music: catharsis. It's also there in punk and hardcore, or even any music (or media, like a good horror movie) that delves into darker themes, but it's kind of baked into metal, especially certain subgenres. I'm not a psychologist, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think there's something about it that's not unlike Jung's idea of "Shadow Work", that metal in particular is great for allowing us to safely confront our inner demons, help us to get a handle on them, and thus achieve that feeling of catharsis. I do know there have been studies that would seem to suggest I'm on the right track, at least!
FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting a long time for you to review Whitechapel, Phil Bozeman is an incredible vocalist I highly recommend Hickory Creek from the album The Valley
YES!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for you to cover Phil Bozeman for awhile he is amazing talented vocalist with an amazing vocal range in the realm of Deathcore even better he is from my family’s home state of Tennessee makes it even better
Seeing them live is a must for anyone in to their music or style of. I started listening to them for their sound, but once I dug in to Phil's lyrics, I was an immediate fan. Really looking forward to you getting him on board to look at what he's doing vocally.
Phil's story is a tragic one. This song though is amazing. In fact most of the tracks on this album and The Valley are amazing. They are two parts of a story of Phil's childhood tragedies.
phil bozeman got me into deathcore all the way back in 2007 along with johnny plague. I fell off it for a while but then came back with will ramos. This man is OG my dudes.
Ive seen Whitechapel live 9 times over my many years of metal festival goings, And they are one band that NEVER gets skipped. Phil has such an amazing stage presence
Its not really surprising that folksy sound finds it way into their music. The band is from Knoxville TN, pretty much the epicenter of bluegrass. So Phil and the guys are just incorporating their heritage. One thing that impresses me about Phil is the degree of enunciation he gets with an extreme level of harshness. Phil may not have the range of techniques that some artists do, but what he does, he does with equisite perfection.( also hes a great traditional vocalist). Absolutely one of my favorite artists. I'm so excited you got Phil and Travis for this project!
Hi Elizabeth I really love your channel. I love seing other people discovering and enjoying the music I love. Your channel helps me notice certain things in music that I have missed, not being a musician. I am happy to see how much you enjoy metal and I was wondering what you would have to say about "love metal" and specifically the band called HIM. Their vocalist Ville has an angelic voice. I recommend these songs: Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart (1998), KIlling Loneliness, Join Me In Death.
Phil is the man! The last two albums from them are so deep and emotional, the way he tells the stories is so incredible. Definitely worth a listen front to back on both albums and a deep dive into the struggles he went through. They are a bit different than their older stuff, but truly incredible albums.
Great one Elizabeth! If you've never heard Phil Bozeman's cover of Unanswered by Suicide Silence, you gotta check that out. Nobody ever did Mitch Lucker more justice in a cover and it was at the tribute show celebrating Mitch's life. Truly incredible!
You really should interview Phil, not just an extremely talented screamer but also incredibly talented singer. Their also from Knoxville Tennessee which is where they get the country bluesy influences from
The whole "KIN" album is a freaking masterpiece! I'm so happy you got into Whitechapel. A song called "Without you/Without us" is a continuation of the story from "I Will Find You". Also the "Bloodsoaked Symphony" is hard, but so much packed with emotions, especially when you know the backstory on Phil, who lost his parents as a young kid. Touching stuff.
I would love to watch you interview Phil! Whitechapel has been one of my favorite bands since The Somatic Defilement. Now its time to dig into Fit For An Autopsy and Joe Badolato. Excellent songs, brutal screams, and beautiful cleans.
I third So many people here. Watch Phil do Unanswered and ou can see how he pushes his air, and stiffens those vocal and neck muscles to push his voice. The dude is unreal.
It is amazing how now, Elizabeth can enjoy deathcore and even get excited and all nerdy. I will always remember the reaction to "To the Hellfire" from Lorna Shores. 🖤
I clicked on this video the instant I saw it as this is one of the songs I use for my vocal sessions and I was curious to hear your thoughts. You're absolutely correct about enunciating while doing harsh vocals as well. The shape of your entire mouth and your tongue position is arguably even more important to your sound than with cleans, so that leaves precious little leeway for good diction. It took me forever to get it down.
And again I’ll recommend the Acid metal band Monster Magnet; Space Lord, Teenage Nagasonic Warhead, Powerslave or Gods and Punk. Amazing Singer. And they were on the soundtrack of Talladega Nights, which everyone loves
Metal Vocalists: Dickie Allen (Nekrogoblikon, Infant Annihilator), Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent), George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (Cannibal Corpse), Chuck Shuldiner (Death) Influential but RIP: Mitch Lucker (Su!cide Silence), Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder)
the Entire Album is Brilliant. My personal favourite song is Anti-cure, I think you would really appreciate it, too, for all the reasons that you appreciated the "vulnerable and tender" aspects of this song. This Album was very divisive amongst the fans, which is why I listened to it for the first time. I was not a White Chapel fan at the time, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It became one of my Favourite albums of the year. Cheers, Elizabeth!!!
I would recommend continuing with Whitechapel. This song is a lot of fun to listen to. Another one that I love with the clean vocals and the strong growls is the song, "Anticure." There are some other examples of Phil's amazing talent in their more recent work. I always love going back to their old stuff that is nothing but screams and growls, but the new stuff blowing me away all over again. Keep it metal. \m/
Thanks so much! Can't wait for you to hear "A Visceral Retch"! Phil is a monster.

If you haven't already, I would highly recommend looking into Phil's background. The album The Valley by Whitechapel is all about his childhood
While I have nostalgia for Whitechapel's older records and I like their more recent direction, The Valley is absolutely their magnum opus.
The Valley is about his mother’s struggles with addiction and mental health. Kin is about him coming to grips with losing both his parents.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I've been asking for Phil for quite a while and i couldn't click this video fast enough!!!
Wonderful reaction, Elizabeth. I look forward to all the research, and more Whitechapel reactions.
Shadow of Intent's band name comes from Halo, not just one album!
Disembodied Tyrant and Crown Magnetar are incredibly good as well
Tartarus Impalement is a much better showcase of Ben's vocals from SOI :)
FFAA - Far From Heaven would be an awesome Vocal analysis, I could listen to that song forever.
Awesome reaction! If you want to hear more of his cleans...check out Orphan!
Phil is a true king, no doubt about it, can’t wait to see you check out more stuff.
And the song is actually awesome, love it!
YES! I’m so excited for this one!
FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting a long time for you to review Whitechapel, Phil Bozeman is an incredible vocalist
I highly recommend Hickory Creek from the album The Valley
Listen to Spiritworld. They call themselves Deathwestern. Not deathcore + country but thrash + western. It's so good.
i love that you appreciate this style and the talent that it takes to do these types of vocals
If you want vulnerability, watch their song Bloodsoaked Symphony. They also have captions they provided in the official video.
I love the meaning within this song. I have such respect for all the artists willing to perform these tests to help further your research
I'd love for you to check out Parkway Drive as well, much of their older songs have that very similar power vocal sound as Phil.
Phil is the man! The last two albums from them are so deep and emotional, the way he tells the stories is so incredible. Definitely worth a listen front to back on both albums and a deep dive into the struggles he went through. They are a bit different than their older stuff, but truly incredible albums.
This whole album really is a must listen to get the full context. It's an absolute masterpiece imo.🔥🤘
Elizabeth coming in with a double banger! 🔥🔥🔥
The dude is unreal.
this whole album is amazing probably my fav album of 2021
I've been waiting a long time for this song to be evaluated 🥲
I was blessed to see them live. Easily one of the best shows I've been to.
Devildriver put out an entire album of country tinged metal, and it freaking WORKS
Devildriver.. so good.. always reminds me of Westside Barbell too (yeah, I'm a powerlifter)
Clouds over california is iconic for me
@@mattpatt199 yeah, and Cry For Me Sky
Ghost riders in the sky would be a amazing video to do.
Yup, that's the first band that came to my mind as well.
It is amazing how now, Elizabeth can enjoy deathcore and even get excited and all nerdy. I will always remember the reaction to "To the Hellfire" from Lorna Shores. 🖤
So they just released a new song called A Visceral Retch. It's so sick and heavy!! You gotta check it out.
whitechapel just released "A Visceral Retch" it's sooo crazy with Phil's vocals!
oh man, i have requested Whitechapel a couple of times, and you finally analysed it. Whitechapel old stuff goes hard too.
Nice. This will be good.
Metal Vocalists: Dickie Allen (Nekrogoblikon, Infant Annihilator), Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent), George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (Cannibal Corpse), Chuck Shuldiner (Death)
Influential but RIP: Mitch Lucker (Su!cide Silence), Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder)
Chuck is dead too
@@HardDispositionso is Trevor 😢
I get full body goosebumps too. My wife laughs at me. It's crazy I fully feel the music.
the Entire Album is Brilliant.
