      Elizabeth - For 2 decades I had the privelege of singing with some excellent local Rock bands.
      I cannot cover Grohls vocals in this. His scream-singing - its texture, volume, air flow & w/ PRECISE annunciation!!! - my voice just won't. NOT AT ALL! Oh how I've TRIED!
      It kills me because it is one of my top 5 Rock fav Rock songs of all time and truly wish I could - just for my pure pleasure for no audience but me 🙂
      I hope your anaysis will at least somewhat help me to understand why this is & afford some measure of catharsis.
      Thank you for your quality content & for sharing your lovely, upbeat personality with us! Best wishes!

    What makes this song great is the writing. And the double meaning behind the question the song asks. Is someone getting the best of you? The song asks, with this one phrase: is someone doing you wrong, fooling you, and breaking your heart? The phrase also asks: are you giving someone the best part of you, putting forth your best effort, and giving them all the love you have to give. It's a master class in songwriting. Saying so much with the fewest words possible. It is a masterpiece.

    I tend to interpret it as a play on the phrase, "getting the best of you" usually meaning something is getting the upper hand and putting you down, but turning it into a double-meaning, asking the listener if they are *giving* their best to someone. "Is someone GETTING the best of you?" - Is someone receiving the gift of your whole self?
    Many interpretations I'm sure, and there's certainly pain and struggle in the song, but I think that's part of the above message. How messy it is to relate and have relationship with others, but reminding us to give it all anyway and not to close off.

    Fun Fact: They almost didn't put this song on the album because they knew it was good, but it's vocally intense and Dave Grohl was worried about singing it night after night on tour. He figured out how to do it live without putting so much strain on his vocals and they put it on the album.
    Also, there's a reason why Prince covered this at the Superbowl, it's a great song.

    • @evilfantasy69
      @evilfantasy69 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      A few years earlier Foo Fighters covered Darling Nikki with permission and later Prince gave them permission to perform it at the MTV VMA's. Prince praised their cover of Darling Nikki but when he played Best of Me at the Superbowl Dave Grohl said they were confused and didn't know why he did it. Prince never explicitly explained why he chose to perform the song. Prince did not ask for permission from the Foo Fighters before covering their song at the Superbowl. There is probably more to that story we will sadly never hear about.

    I always heard "the best of you" in two contexts and your take that the second part sounded more hopeful fits with it too. The beginning is someone taking advantage of you. The back half is are you the best you can be? Are you giving someone your best? The two go hand in hand. If you're abused, you can't be your best. But once you break free and be yourself, you can also be that best version of yourself for someone deserving.

    That break near the end when the instruments drop out - where, as you put it, we’re able to re-center before the final push - I call that moment “musical free-fall”. Foo Fighters lyrics run the gamut from inane to profound. Sometimes they nail it and I think Best of You, even though it deals in a few platitudes, truly hits on a lot of emotional beats that we all innately feel. And then the band, Dave's vocals included, speak to your core. That's why they still draw fans to big venues. I love that you can still see it even divorced of the time the song was written slash current events.
    RIP Taylor, dude was a monster on the drums.

    I'm so excited you did this one, this is far and away my favorite Foo Fighters song. Everlong is the other one, and then the rest are kind of if I am in the mood. (Like, My Hero I can only listen to now with when I'm ready to cry because all I can think of is Shane's drum tribute to his father.)
    It's so cool to listen to you talk about the musicality of songs, because I never know why I am attracted to certain songs... and then you talk about the patterns or the construction or the tricks they're using in there, and it makes me understand my own tastes and preferences better, which is awesome. The Warning has a bitter sweet relationship with the Foo Fighters. They opened for the Foo Fighters in Mexico City, which ended up, sadly, being Taylor Hawkins last performance. The 3 sisters of The Warning were deeply upset. Their concert at the Pepsi Center is one of highest energy concerts I have watched. Their drummer Paulina aka Pau, at age 22, is already at the top of the list of drummers who sing.

      This is the answer, I believe. I think she saw Prince sing this at Superbowl. Which he did as a “payback” to Foo Fighters for covering Darling Nikki. They had asked his permission and he told them to “write their own music”…they covered it anyhow and he did this at Superbowl. I was in Heaven-my favorite Foo song and Prince singing it!!! I have a really great story about this song. I went to a Foo Fighters concert in 2017. During this song, the crowd was doing the vocalization. We got to a point where the vocalizations were supposed to be over, but we kept doing it. Dave stopped the band and said "What the fuck are you doing? That's not how the song ends. I want to finish the song. Do you want to finish the song?" It was so much fun!

    I liked the Foo Fighters before I heard this song. They had several good songs that I liked listening to over the years. When I heard this for the first time it made me sit down and listen again. Then you start actually hearing the lyrics and I think it is one of the most beautifully written songs. The duality of the meaning of the title, the one liners that just make you really think and relate, the passion and pain in his voice, the driving instruments behind him. I fell in love with Foo Fighters after this song.
