    Thanks for the safety comments. You are quite correct, people tend to take these things for granted. I lent my saw to a friend a number of years ago. Big mistake. 64 stitches later we were very lucky he still had both legs. Think about the little electric saws people buy for light pruning and such. Once they are plugged in, or the battery is charged, they are hot. No warning like a noisy rattling saw normally gives you. They can seriously hurt you.

    Watched both videos back to back, the little 51 is now just freaking awesome running now thanks to you, Walter! Nice little saw for larger limbs and smaller trees. I bet it's nice and light to handle. I just can't iterate it enough, you can't find hardly any Husqvarna's/Jonsered's around here any older than a 455! They're just not around here. It's all Mac's, Homelite's, Stihl's and the rarer Remington, Poulan (the good old ones, not talking about the big box store junk ones), or even a Pioneer! That Partner (P100) made McCulloch Pro Mac 1000 that I have my 77 year old dad found up in Wisconsin in the middle of nowhere! Lol!

    I just watched your video about your father's homelit super xl,for the third time. Great stuff. I don't know much about saws but I have had the same problem with bar oil spilling every time I use a funnel. Now I punch a small hole in the gasket on a new gallon and pour into saw . no funnel, no spills! But you must not peel gasket off your new gallon of bar oil. Just poke a small hole in front. I hope this helps. Jim

    mister if you don't stop cutting your firewood so short as that you ain't going to amount to much come winter. haaaaha hey no more joking but you turned a bunch of wrecks into damn good running saws. a hell of a thing.

    The 51 runs great especially considering it started life as a pro-sumer/rancher caliber saw basically. The 254 were a small pro grade saw basically and definitely ran better out of the box. But that 51 you have worked up quite nicely.
    I just got my hands on a 50 that a guy was giving away because, well... He flooded it and couldn't figure out why he couldn't get it running. Basically dumped the gas out of the cylinder and it started right up. Runs like a top. It's the 51 with a 1mm smaller bore essentially. It's not a screamer, but seems to have a very smooth somewhat torquey power band. Similar to how your 51 pulls, albeit a bit lesser. They seem to run very well and the smooth linear type pull seems to make it look slower than a peakier higher revving saw but much more forgiving to run. My muffler modded 2245 jonsered (45.7cc) is undeniably faster in smaller wood, and probably keeps pace in wood up to about 10-12" but you definitely have to have a softer hand because it doesn't have any lugging power. It's noticeably less forgiving in that regard, but both are fun to run. I haven't tached either saw yet but I'd be surprised if I'm touching 12k on the 50 where the 2245 probably runs a bit over 13k based on the ear tach. Seems about normal with the old and smooth versus new and peaky/screamer profiles on most saws I've run.
    Basically, the 50/51 are perfect firewood saws for the size firewood that's more fun to handle, as well as about any other saw in that size and weight class, new or 'old'. Anything larger than what these saws do well in is much less fun to put in the truck.

    Very informative video!! Never expected 362 to cut that much more than the 51. Displacement diff.and cut times favour the new saw. Wander if fuel usage and emissions and heat build after a series of cuts is much diff.?

    I threw my new 455 on the tach, yesterday, and it read 13, 140. I richened it up a bit and could not get it to come down to my standard 12,600-800 area. I am running it with 40 : 1 with about 95 octane PNE (premium non ethanol) gas and Citgo Sea and Snow two cycle oil.

    I had my 51 since 1993 bought new and I would still not sell it. Don't have any idea how many cords or how many trees of 16 to 24 inch diameter that it cuts through since then but we never ran out of fire wood each year.

    I dot know about orders of magnitude but the ms 660 that I built is the most powerful saw I have ever run. I was cutting some big logs last week and that saw scared me enough that I let off the throttle a bit. I thought it was trying to pull me right into the log if not for the dogs and width of the 660. It is a beast, including the cranking part of it.

    51 was the best saw I've ever had still regret getting rid of it

  • @Andyshine77
    @Andyshine77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The hot start issues only occurs after the saw sits for 10 to 15 minutes. Never had a problem starting my troublesome 562 right after shutdown.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which is what I did...I ran it hard for about a half tank. Let it sit while I ran the little saws..."heat soak". Then picked it up as you saw in the video.

      Good deal, just wanted to make sure you were doing it right lol.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried all kinds of things with that saw to replicate those issues....even sent it out to a logger to hammer on it for a week this summer when it was hot as hell out. What you see is how it acts. That's it..don't know what else to say on that saw...:)

    • @Andyshine77
      @Andyshine77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      well it's good to know some of them don't act up in the heat. As you know mine became pretty much useless in warm weather.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course the mods I made were mostly about getting rid of heat, especially the muffler mod. Wonder if that made the difference.

    You should Come to russia and tell them about safety. We dont wear ear, eye, head, feet protection. Only professional arborists do that. Many People here like ms 180 with no protection. I have a 55 husky without chain catcher and its a bit risky to work with it. I prefer ms 180 due to its New condition and safety. Also it eats less oil and gas, but 55 husky is 2 times almost faster. Its about 17 years old with its original cylinder by mahle. Nice saw, but i need to find how to find these problem. I have a metal one, but here in the video you have a plastic one. Does it really matter? Thanks, greetings from russia

    Where is your tractor and bush Hogs? There is no way I would have cut that log in the weeds. Mi would have put a cable or chain on it and pulled it in the clear or cut around it so it was out in the open.. if you cannot see what you are cutting - it is hard to cut safely. The problem I have always worried about is snakes and they like wooded areas that are cool and dark. I just do not like places that I do not have an unobstructed view of my surroundings. The one time I got bite by a saw was when a fallen down tree had fallen on a small tree and when I was cutting through the tree the little tree hit me in the face and I dropped the saw. I got 24 stitches on my left leg - that was in the days before good PPE's, but I learned never to cut stuff that I could not see what I was doing, completely.
