Ah yes. It's not a Filipino festivity without lumpia. Everytime there is a family prayer and gathering, food is always there. Yesterday was the Feast of Santo Niño, the patron of our town. My family prepared a feast for everyone who wants to come inside our home and eat. No wonder our faith is centered in food. It brings everyone together. A communion we unconciously practice.
Love when you are all together in the studio, this was a great episode. Love Mid-Eastern food, made me hungry. Grew up in Italian house, and food was after God!! Instead of asking how you are, most Italians ask 'did you eat?"
What a great subject! I would love it if you could do an episode on what it would have been like to live in the days that Jesus did! Did Women wear makeup? What were hairstyles like? What was daily life like? What did people do for entertainment?
Thank you guys for explaining things in an interesting, informative, humorous way !! Makes me want to come back all the time !! You have helped me understand the gospel in a modern day way! Gold Bless you all!
My earlier comment seems to have been removed, but essentially it was merely to state in detail that a lot of what is mentioned here is from popular "Jesus diet" books, but is not necessarily historically accurate. Jesus did not have a Whole Foods grocery store, so he likely ate lentils and leeks stew with barley bread on a daily basis. Not "because he was poor" but because all the people of Judea did not have the type of agricultural macroeconomy we enjoy today, and everyone would have eaten what they had locally. Fish would have been a treat and lamb would have been a special occasion, because it was better to sell that stuff to the Romans or to the temple markets in Jerusalem. Anyway, it is an interesting topic, but I would advise most people listening to actually research these foods before just assuming Lebanese food is what Jesus ate 2000 years ago, before the Arabs and Turks came in.
In Austria they call tomatoes "Paradeiser", which could be loosely translated into 'paradisians', but I think they took that name from Hungary and Serbia. Fig makes sense with the leaves they covered themselves with. Fig in German means 'Feige', turn that into an adjective and you get 'feige', but now it doesn't mean the fruit, but 'cowardly', just as the noun 'Feigheit' means 'cowardice'. As I strongly believe that 'In the beginning was the word...' and add to that the linguistic confusion as a result of the building of the Tower of Babel, I often think that so much truth is in our languages. Greetings from a Lutheran, who loves your shows.
Love the show guys! Every single episode I’ve heard had been great. Can you guys do a show on the apparition at Garabandal? As far as I can tell, it hasn’t been declared an official miracle by the church but many like Padre Pio believed it to be true. I would love your thoughts.
@Frenchmans fury very true. This apparition (along with others of course) I find very interesting though. I’ve seen a few videos/ documentaries on this particular apparition but was interested in seeing what our good friends at the Catholic Talk Show thoughts were.
I'm thoroughly disappointed by the puerile humor you all added to this program. You remind me of Parochial High School Sophomores huddled around cracking wise on everything that comes to mind, or everyone. M
Its mainly hippie talk. Basically just the fact they ate whole grains which is healthier. They claim you should eat Ezekiel bread, but the reason Ezekiel makes this bread is not for health reasons whatsoever.
Fun fact: the Seventh Day Adventist community in Loma Linda, California is one of the worlds five blue zones with record high longevity. They eat a biblical diet from the garden of Eden, vegetarian with no meat, coffee, or tea.
Great subject. I've noticed you missed that God commanded humans to only eat vegetables and fruit up until the flood. Humans ate only these until Genesis 9:3, when God finally gave Noah and humanity the animals to eat.
Can’t believe how quickly the conversation moved from the obvious plant-based references in Genesis to hunting and preparing meat meals. I was hoping the discussion would point this out. It is not until much later in human history in the Bible that the eating of animals is discussed. I love to eat meat, so don’t tag me as anti/meat. Just thought you guys would notice the fruit/vegetables vs animal diet in the early Bible days.
Oh, you guys have me rolling! I was raised without much, so can appreciate cow dung heat or walls. I enjoyed the food analogies and realities. I was a bit saddened by daily mass. I'm not sure if you are aware but so few mass times are offered. Even on Sunday just one time. Not family friendly. Not accommodating working class. Sinners are retired so confession at 9 am, during the week... At some point priests or bishops should choose to serve. This convenience stuff is old. In this age of communism, I would think you would want to reach the majority of the community!
Actually by Greco-Roman times, it was the common wheat that we use today. Which is very interesting since Passover was originally a barley festival, but by this time imported wheat was more plenteous.
I think you should consider putting your episodes in print, like a collection of essays, with appropriate editing. You could reach people who prefer print and have another revenue stream
Must admit I'm confused by the statement that there was no lamb at the Last Supper. At the first Passover a single animal could be shared by multiple families. It's quite possible that when the disciples were preparing their supper they obtained meat from the family which was hosting them. Jesus says specifically that He wanted to eat the Passover meal with them. Would it have BEEN a Passover meal at all without the lamb? ?? After all, the institution of the Eucharist and the sacrifice of the Cross took place AFTER the Passover supper was finished. Just asking.
Jesus was the lamb of God, but they still would have eaten lamb if it was a passover meal. It would not fulfill the commandment to omit the lamb. Nowhere does the Bible say what Pope Benedict infers here from the timing in John’s gospel alone. In fact he wrote his exegesis on this with the disclaimer that reasonable scholars could disagree. But the other seder foods are likely diaspora additions, may have been even centuries after this era.
What Pope Benedict says makes perfect sense to me. Out with the old, in with the new (covenant)--which is of much greater importance. Explains also why animal sacrifices stopped, something God never wanted (too many Scriptures to list).
First time watching. I honestly can't tell, because there's so much sarcasm and joking on the show. Do these gentlemen think Jesus cursed the Fig Tree because he was hungry (or as they put it...Jesus was hangry) and there were no figs? Or was that a joke and they actually do know the reason behind the tree?
One other important point: garum is not kosher. Because it is made from dead fish guts cured in brine for 40 days. So Jesus did not eat this, probably.
Was he being sarcastic about wondering if there was an apple in the Bible? That bite at the beginning felt mocking of Adam and Eve. Weird, this is supposed to be Christian?
Certain foods not to eat that's for the Jews Not for us. As for catholics do anything there's restrictions on certain parts of the year No meat For example like Ash wednesday. Also, good friday lent

21:23 my favorite story too… when I think about it, it’s just too endearing of our Lord 😭😭 I almost can’t take it
I think this will be a fun one to listen to very excited

So to summarize just some for a grocery list: figs, pomegranates, pistachios, almonds, tilapia, grain breads...
No way they said tilapia....😮

Sooo... When is the episode on acts of mercy gonna come up? You can even divided into two parts: corporal and spiritual.
I have heard of people only eating food supposably mention in the Bible and how much healthier it is.

That was a corny opening I seed what you did there. I love the fruits of your talks
Note: the wheat Jesus ate is definitely not the one we eat today in most western countries, so... caution
I agree, it’s a shame…
