  • This is the fourth video in the Building a Balance 482 Catamaran series. In this series, we follow the build of the first Balance 482 Catamaran from tooling to launch and sea trials of hull #1.
This video shows production progress on the deck, the deck de-mold and the joining of the deck to the hull. It takes a really close look at production progress inside the hull, including furniture construction and carbon fibre door construction.
For those who have not watched the earlier videos in the series, it is worth explaining that the hull mold is constructed using thousands of CNC-cut shutter ply frames and meranti stringers. This framework is then cladded with weather-proof ply and faired until smooth. The same process is then applied to the deck plug, from which the deck mold is manufactured using E-Glass and resins with structural reinforcement behind it. The Balance 482 hull is laminated in one piece without the need for additional joining laminates and tabbing, which helps to save weight. The structural PVC foam core material is thermo formed and vacuum bagged to assist with further weight savings and to provide structural integrity to this performance sailing catamaran. Furthermore, all bulkheads are properly tabbed in and we use carbon fibre in high-load areas for extra stiffness and strength.

Thanks for showing more of the build. Needless to say, it's fascinating. Please keep posting videos of the builds.
The beauty of the Balance designs and the quality of build is highly apparent, even while construction is happening.
The other thing apparent is that the craftsmen building the boat are highly skilled. Good job to all, including the training, guidance and apprenticeships to get them to that level of ability. Really the high quality of these boats is a direct result of that excellent building skill, along with great design and manufacturing engineering.
It's also great to see that the new boatyard is building to the same high standards as the original one.
Not sure I could live with it, but the zebrawood interior is spectacular and pretty.
My main concern is that I'd like to see a lot more protective equipment worn. Though it's uncomfortable, it probably makes for better health later in life. I do understand that different countries have different standards, but a manufacturer can use higher health and safety standards if they choose.
P.S. Music level is still to high relative to voice. Use a slow averaging meters to set the audio levels better.
Do less panning of the camera. Put it on a tripod and lock it down, particularly when doing the interview portions. Too much panning can almost lead to motion sickness.

Beautiful. What technique is used to join the deck to the hulls? Thanks

@Gustavo we are about to release a video that explains this. We will ping you when it is online! They are glassed together on the inside and outside, effectively as if the vessel is all one solid unit.

Hope they have stronger bulkheads than Lagoon.
