Non-spoiler info: -This is about 70 years from ATLA (equivalent to our world's 1920s-1930s). I don't think Avatars generally have an extended lifespan... as far as I know it's only really Kyoshi that lived an extremely long life (230 years), and that was explained in a comic by her learning a form of spiritual self-renewal through meditation. Roku was in his 70s when he died, and most other Avatars haven't been shown to live significantly older than any other person. Aang's stint in the iceberg explained why he died at a relatively young age in general, not just for an Avatar. He was 66 biologically, which is not young but it's perhaps a little younger than average for dying of old age.
Personally, while I enjoyed Avatar more when I was a kid, I like Korra more as an adult. There are much deeper themes here, and darker too, and I enjoy that in addition to the great entertainment value.
Kya was named after Katara's mom and Bumi was named after King Bumi. according to the creators of the show, Tenzin was named after The Dalai Lama. Tenzin and Monk Gyatso were both references to the Dalai Lama who's name is Tenzin Gyatso
If you're wondering what happened to Zuko's mom, they made comics that show that. They also tell the tale of how industrialism, socialism and racism sentiments began to expand.
I have the same experience. I LOVE the legend of korra. It had taught me more about myself, it gave me a show where I could just watch and feel included. And everything about the show is so well thought out and just UGH. I love this show so fucking much.
@ Lola and Milena - Subtitle Spoilers -> Book 4, Episode 2 - Near the end of the episode, the subtitle says the name of a person talking before you can recognise who is talking. You would rather not get spoiled. That's the only subtitle spoiler I know of off-hand. Also, Amon's identity was a VERY enticing theory and discussion back when the show aired. I hope some fans can convey the theories back then without spoiling anything. It would be a joy to see you two comment on some of them.
@@Ragnar_Aevarsson edit:this could be spoilers of season 2 if you care about bisons? well uh so uh thats sure an interesting thought but i heard lately that there is air bison and sky bison, they are a bit different, so yea appa was either the last of his kind indeed or found a gf who's basically a different breed yunno, i think its the former because there's an entire herd with the sun warriors No idea if thats true canon but they keep calling them different names and they have different look from appa
They were able to make such a jump in technology because of the end of the war. With peace brought new ideas and trade and new inventions. Korra is also so good at bending because she’s just been practicing in peace. No distractions just mentors teaching her for years.

Maybe, maybe not. There is a Japanese saying...this life you are who you want. You can Google translate it many Japanese blog talk about it 「今の自分は前世の自分が望んだ姿である」so I think this “myth” is loosely translated from this idea
Fun facts about Aangs kids names Kya: named after Kataras mom Bumi: obvious namesake Tenzin: named after Monk Gyatso (whose name comes from the current Dalai Lamas birth name, Tenzin Gyatso)
after the show aang found a herd of other flying bison, their their stripes are actually different than appa's. when the airbenders originally got attacked, i guess a lot of the original bison flew away and changed over 100 years.

well korra was her own enemy because she got locked in such a young age (because of red lotus) and didnt know what kind of danger gonna bring the future to her
She started the series being the powerful Avatar, and had to learn how to be a normal person, while Aang started as a normal and had to learn how to became the Avatar.
@@SenorEscaso y'all do know season 2 sets up the structure for why ATLOK season 3 is so strong. Its similar to the way events of season 1 ATLA built into why the rest the series was so great.
There's a second attempt to create a live action Avatar universe series being worked on by Netflix currently (the first having been cancelled after ATLA's creators left the project) but there's no announced release date yet... If you are looking for more from this universe to experience during the wait there are two books that go over Avatar Kyoshi's early days, and there are some comics that follow the ATLA characters adventures after the original series ended for those of you actually wondering about Zuko's mother etc. . .

Although not required for TLOK, I would really recommend reading the comics to get more insight into what happened with the characters after the main series ended. You guys will love it. However, I will leave a brief history of republic City for anyone curious who hasn't read the comics. I will try not to spoil the comics, and will only be elaborating on the history Tenzin gave us in the beginning. During the 100 year war, the fire nation has tried to infiltrate ba sing se many times and in that effort, the fire nation had captured small villages and setup fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom. After the war, when Zuko was made fire lord, he promised to remove the fire nation colonies, and return the land to the earth kingdom to whom it rightfully belonged. However, when Zuko visited the said colonies, he found that both earth benders and fire benders in the area had bonded over the 100 years and there were many mixed families. Zuko knew removing the fire benders from the colony would break up many families and went against his promise thus resulting in the events of the comics. After a lot of dramatic moments the final solution was proposed. The colonies will not be part of either fire or earth kingdom, rather it will be a nation of its own and people of any nation are free to come and live in the city. All the benders sharing their skills accelerated the growth of the city thus forming the republic City we see now.
Please don't search anything related to TLOK on youtube before watching the whole series, because *a LOT* of reaction channels put SPOILERS on the thumbnail for the people who haven't watched it yet, so be careful L&M
The look on y'all faces when Tenzin and his kids arrived! Priceless! XD I really enjoy Legend of Korra, it's a great show - though it's probably worth noting that when it was created, it was only meant to be a single season originally - which means some story elements are "rushed" compared to Avatar, where they planned out arcs over 3 seasons. Not a bad thing, but I know some people measure it up to ATLA a bit too closely. But, I love how more mature they are about themes and outcomes - rarely are things just pure black and white, there's almost always shades of grey to all characters and their actions. Very mature way of looking at things Oh, I won't spoil anything, but Korra has a pretty impressive cast over its seasons of voice actors. Tenzin is voice by J. K Simmons (who actually does a few great voice acting roles, but is also a well known screen actor), and we heard Lance Henriksen (Another famous face from movies) as one of the bad guys at the end of the episode. Later there are some other famous voices including Henry Rollins and Zelda Williams (Daughter of Robin Williams) Don't look up who they play! It will spoil future episodes!
I love how we started atla with Katara being able to only catch a fish, then in lok we see her as a master training the avatar, it shows how much she grew specifically as a character
I used to judge LoK a lot more harshly on my teenage years. Now, there are still some aspects I do not like but if I ignore them I am able to enjoy the show just as much! Also, the more I think about it, the more I believe the advancement in technology, along with the problems of the city (triad crime, lower classes on brink of rebellion, ineffective government) and the rapid industrialization might be a reference to the Century of Humiliation era of China.
Same in the past i actully hated this show and I realize that my opinions weren't actully mine, was the ideas he fandom put in my mind, sometimes while looking the show I was like "wait this is actully pretty good" but a part of me said "NO remember you hate this show", as time pass I learn to love the good aspects of this show specially book 3 and I liked how mature that season was.

He was 66 biologically, which is not young but it's perhaps a little younger than average for dying of old age.
the bison one was seen in season 2

This.
@@Kai-fb1ol Kyoshi's age was originally a mistake. But they worked it in as her having an unusually long life.
Personally, while I enjoyed Avatar more when I was a kid, I like Korra more as an adult. There are much deeper themes here, and darker too, and I enjoy that in addition to the great entertainment value.
What people call "flaws" with this show = it's different. It's no less beautiful, it's just - as you said - not the original. But it's so good.
Kya was named after Katara's mom and Bumi was named after King Bumi. according to the creators of the show, Tenzin was named after The Dalai Lama. Tenzin and Monk Gyatso were both references to the Dalai Lama who's name is Tenzin Gyatso
First 5 minutes of this episode is soooo hype, what an intro. Also yes, 4x2 is a subtitle off situation.
*Sees flying bison*
"How did appa..?" "APPA FOUND A GIRLFRIEND"
If you're wondering what happened to Zuko's mom, they made comics that show that. They also tell the tale of how industrialism, socialism and racism sentiments began to expand.
You're a socialism
Also the origins of the United Republic and this city in pariticular.
And how there are more flying bison :)
And who would really win, King Bumi or Toph
"GET AWAY, CHILD" lmao I love these two.
I’m so glad you’re giving Korra a chance. I LOVE this show, and personally, I prefer Legend of Korra, just because it’s more relatable to me.
I have the same experience. I LOVE the legend of korra. It had taught me more about myself, it gave me a show where I could just watch and feel included. And everything about the show is so well thought out and just UGH. I love this show so fucking much.
They're entering the series with the perfect expectations, they're going to love it
@ Lola and Milena - Subtitle Spoilers
-> Book 4, Episode 2 - Near the end of the episode, the subtitle says the name of a person talking before you can recognise who is talking.
"How did Appa...???" "Appa found a girlfriend!" lol
What if Appa didn’t find a girlfriend and Oogie isn’t a descendant of Appa... what if Oogie *IS* the girlfriend?
What if Appa wanted a boyfriend
@@Ragnar_Aevarsson edit:this could be spoilers of season 2 if you care about bisons?
well uh so uh thats sure an interesting thought but i heard lately that there is air bison and sky bison, they are a bit different, so yea appa was either the last of his kind indeed or found a gf who's basically a different breed yunno, i think its the former because there's an entire herd with the sun warriors
No idea if thats true canon but they keep calling them different names and they have different look from appa

This first episode is always solid. Tenzin staring at Aang’s statue with that soundtrack HITS.
people spoiled you on WAY too much of this show, lol. but i'm so happy to continue the journey with you guys :)
Honestly, I'm so tired of well-meaning but misguided fans who feel like they need to "prep" people for a show instead of just letting them go in blind and form their own opinions.
The AtLA/LoK fandom just can't shut up and let people figure things out. Its infuriating.

His story and her conflict by being the shadow of Aang, and the first of a new wave of Airbenders makes him a great character and master.
Spoilers...? I guess?
4:55 "who is the bad guy?"
Well, all villains aside, I think Korra was her own enemy. She started off strong and got humbled through all the stuff she went through. And let's face it. That's a tough battle.
ATLA always had an overarching theme of forgiveness of others and yourself
well korra was her own enemy because she got locked in such a young age (because of red lotus) and didnt know what kind of danger gonna bring the future to her
She started the series being the powerful Avatar, and had to learn how to be a normal person, while Aang started as a normal and had to learn how to became the Avatar.
My fav part is "im the avatar, you gotta deal with it."

There's a second attempt to create a live action Avatar universe series being worked on by Netflix currently (the first having been cancelled after ATLA's creators left the project) but there's no announced release date yet... If you are looking for more from this universe to experience during the wait there are two books that go over Avatar Kyoshi's early days, and there are some comics that follow the ATLA characters adventures after the original series ended for those of you actually wondering about Zuko's mother etc. . .
This show goes from good to bad to amazing to great (in that order), it's a rollercoaster!
Pay attention a lot and get rewarded a lot~
So glad you're watching this now, hope you're gonna love it!
Honestly after rewatching recently, i didn't think book 2 was a bad book like i did before. Def the weakest book in the avatar series but it still had some genuinely great things imo.
In hindsight season 2 isn't even that bad. It has growing pains but it's not overall bad
Wouldn't say season 2 ATLOK is bad. Its just a downshift from season 1. As it acts more like a setup for the rest the series. While season 1's events was carried through in the background(I've come to enjoy rewatching season 2 ATLOK more so than season 1 ATLA)
@@jonathanjohnson6727 season 2 wasn't meant as set up though the problem for season 2 was they didn't know if they were being renewed either and couldn't do any real set up so they were trying to do a full rounded conclusion rushed
@@jameswg13 I know that(as it could've been done more concise and fleshed out). I mean how they took the core of what season 2 gave(mid point of the season) and continue off the events of the finale.
YESSSSSSSS I'M SOOO HAPPY YOU'RE DOING KORRA!!!!! THANK YOU!!!😆😆
You know they'll start calling Bolin "My Boy"
Hear me out: Tenzin in real life, but its the actor of Walter White with an arrow on his head
? His actor is JK Simmons, not Bryan Cranston. They modeled Tenzin's likeness on the voice actor, so he could pull off a live action Tenzin
"I want a show that will be nice to me" *Immediately starts sobbing*
Please don't search anything related to TLOK on youtube before watching the whole series, because *a LOT* of reaction channels put SPOILERS on the thumbnail for the people who haven't watched it yet, so be careful L&M
The look on y'all faces when Tenzin and his kids arrived! Priceless! XD
I really enjoy Legend of Korra, it's a great show - though it's probably worth noting that when it was created, it was only meant to be a single season originally - which means some story elements are "rushed" compared to Avatar, where they planned out arcs over 3 seasons. Not a bad thing, but I know some people measure it up to ATLA a bit too closely.
But, I love how more mature they are about themes and outcomes - rarely are things just pure black and white, there's almost always shades of grey to all characters and their actions. Very mature way of looking at things
Oh, I won't spoil anything, but Korra has a pretty impressive cast over its seasons of voice actors. Tenzin is voice by J. K Simmons (who actually does a few great voice acting roles, but is also a well known screen actor), and we heard Lance Henriksen (Another famous face from movies) as one of the bad guys at the end of the episode. Later there are some other famous voices including Henry Rollins and Zelda Williams (Daughter of Robin Williams)
Don't look up who they play! It will spoil future episodes!
