Janet Varney, the voice actor for Korra, is a DELIGHTFUL person. At some point you might want to watch some interviews or panels with her and the others (maybe late in the series to avoid spoilers)
I met her in person when we went to San Francisco for the ATLA live concert. She is a very nice person and you can tell her passion for the avatar universe is there.

Glad you're doing Korra now. I was skeptical about it, when my kids and I finished AtLA we went right into Korra, knowing some fans were negative about it. It's a great expansion of this wonderful bending universe.
Fun Fact: Monk Gyatso, Aang's mentor and father figure from before he went into the ice, is named after the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, so, while not a direct in universe reference in the manner that his elder siblings Kya (Katara's mother, and also the original name inteded for Katara in the unaired pilot) and Bumi (that one's obvious), Tenzin is, at least out of universe, named in memory of Monk Gyatso, since he forms the other side of the reference.
I like Aang more, I think Last Airbender is the more solidly written, overall good series. However, I somehow find myself thinking more about Korra. There's a lot of super cool and subtle layers going on. It's weird, I think Airbender's a better series, yet I find myself wanting to rewatch Korra more often. I find her character progression real compelling.
I also enjoy KORRA more than ATLA. However, the reason KORRA can be a stronger and more condensed story is because ATLA built the world first. ATLA had to be both exposition of the world & concepts and story. KORRA can focus more on the characters. People are harsh about KORRA S2, but everything that happens there sets up S3 & S4. Really love the arc Korra goes through. The Blu-ray commentaries have a lot of great details. Such as the creators had to keep leaving notes for the animators to draw Korra’s arms more muscular. A life-long, trained physical fighter would be more toned.
One thing I love is that older Katara is voiced by Eva Marie Saint, who is an old Hollywood legend, most famous for being opposite Cary Grant in the film North by Northwest.
Meesh I was also a Korra hater and then I watched it, she’s incredible and as the seasons went on we truly saw how she is like all the avatars of the past! Get ready for some dark moments Dee 😅
A nice detail is that Tenzin is named after Gyatso... Sort off. The Current dalai Lama is named Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, but is more commonly known as Tenzin Gyatso.
It took me a minute to warm up to LOK as well, for similar reasons, but I’m so glad I did. It has its rocky moments (Sokka pun), but it’s great in it’s own way, and like Meesh said, it is darker and more mature in areas, which is great because it was as if the writers were writing for a maturing OG fan base. Also, I love how book one started with Air because we never got that in the first series. 😭
I love the evolution of the bending techniques and the progression of the technology into the radio age... Aang and the first story feels more like a fairy tale or myth, and Korra's villains definitely bring a darker more adult vibe.
I adore korra so much as someone who grew up watching avatar from ep 1. My fave seasons of korra goes 3rd 1st 4th and 2nd seasons personally and amon is such a strong villain and the whole growth you see korra goes through in each season is top tier story telling.
Even though the first season of AtLA starts slow, the writers did such a great job world building and they did it in a way a child could understand it. LoK, you go into it already knowing much of the world, how the bending works and some of the lore, so they are able to start at a higher level, so to speak. I love both these series so much. The writers have never disappointed me.
I love watching people watch that intro, so many feels. I'm pretty sure that drawing is supposed to be what Sokka was trying to draw. They named Tenzin's sister Kya, which was Kataras original name in the pilot. I'm pretty sure timeline wise this is where the comics started.
ATLA is almost impossible to beat, but what does it matter, Legend of Korra is awesome in it's own ways, soundtrack, animation and action are next level, worldbuilding is great, the story is compelling, I just love Korra so much 😅. Excited to follow your journeys. Too bad Nickelodeon gave the creators such a hard time during production, if not this show could have been even better, which is crazy to think about.
Korra grows on you. Although imo ATLA is still superior in writing consistency and the connection it has with the characters and fans. The main problem with Korra for me is the way characters are forced to each other unlike the natural family bonding of the original casts. But what i really like is Korra’s villains. Some of them are really really good and unique which u will come to know. Overall, Korra is good. It’s just the toxic fanbase which really taint the whole series and hating on ATLA😂

The Aang period is based on the 1840s, while Korra was designed by taking the US cities of the 1920s - 1930s as an example, and the next Earthbender avatar will take place in modern times, probably 90 - 100 years after Korra. Frankly, I think it will be interesting in the 2020s - 2030s.
Legend of Korra had some absolutely massive shoes to fill following the Last Airbender and, I know it got a lot of shit, but I really enjoy it and it seems like in general people are starting to realise "Yeah, this is a really good show".
I hope the sequel gives us this kinda feels when we transition from Korra to the new Earth Avatar! I can imagine his or her world will be as different from Korra's, as Korra's time was from Aaang's.

I think objectively ATLA is better. I disliked Korra at first but I’ll be honest, as I get older I think it might actually be better or at least more enjoyable even with it’s flaws.
I was more interested in seeing Korra but knowing it was part of the Avatar universe, i made myself watch Last Airbender beforehand so i wouldn't be lost and I ended up loving both shows. Korra is still my favorite series.
Wow!! its crazy because i was starting college in 2014, so i caught the last season of Korra Live, BUT it was a friend i met while in school that introduced me to the ATLA show, so i was catching up WHILE watching S4 live with mt friend 😅 Korra is mt favorite character and Avatar, i relate to her sooo much and im always happy to follow or get to know other fans of her ❤
The guy in the bushes reminds me of Doc and Shu from the painted Lady Episode and that’s exactly what that person is representing a little Easter egg there.

1:09 ...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who may prefer LoK a little more than AtLA. I don't think it's necessarily more mature or darker that ATLA (because ATLA gets mature and dark), I think it's that it's more *complex* than ATLA. ATLA, which is obviously aimed at young children, has a very simple drawn out storyline centered around young characters that a young audience will understand more. LoK is aimed at the same audience - who were now adults. So not only are the characters older, the story is more complex. The world is more complex. There are more layers to the plot, development, world-building, and characters - and the journeys the characters take are also more layered. Not to mention, the show deals with more specific political plots than ATLA did. What little politics in ATLA were again, very simple for a young audience. Korra gets deeper and more layered. Which is why I think I enjoy it more. I like a story with more meat to it - something that is going to stay on my mind for hours, even days after I watch. Which is what happened with Korra. Especially the more mental-health centered moments --- those really stuck with me. 3:49 thank you for recognizing that was Korra... most think it's Katara for awhile even though it's obviously the Avatars.
This is series at first I didn’t like but it grew on me. One of the reasons it might not have been well received at first was (in opinion) because Hollywood at that point in time was really trying to push for the “strong, independent, need no man” trope and it might of rubbed people the wrong way. Of course the writers were just capitalizing on the trend I’m sure since at the time that’s what the people wanted.

ATLA for me is untouchable, it's my favorite series and I doubt anything will ever touch it. But I LOVE TLOK. I love Korra, and having watched TLOK at similar ages as the characters were, it really resonated with me deeply. I also love the world development and the exploration of a world with bending.
New subber here. Saw u watching one of my favorite animated shows of all time so I had to peep. I have this show as superior to TLA. Mostly because of the maturity and lack of filler. Even though Nickelodeon steadily screwed this show over. They still made a great product. I’ve rewatched this many many times. Hope u enjoy the journey.
The first episode of korra is my favorite, its super nostalgic now too since I watched it when it first premiered back in 2012. The emotions and being in awe with how it was different from ATLA is unforgettable to me, first impressions are everything, and they did a good job at introducing us to korra. Unfortunately the quality of the show does take bit of a dive, then its all over the place after halfway through book 2. Still its a good show overall that unfortunately suffered from the network trying to sabotage the show, its a miracle that the show is watchable after you learn about the crappy bts production lol
I also tend to say that I like Korra more, it’s definitely got more flaws in it than the original series but the things it does well really hit in a much deeper and longer lasting way to me personally
ATLA I liked from the start but LOK I loved it more as I got older but I actually love both of them equally at this point. They both have a special place in my heart.
Korra is amazing! Season 1 and Season 3 are up there with season 2 of ATLA. Season 2 does get rough. Also a reminder that Korra was approved 1 season so each season kind of wraps up everything before going on to the next one. If anything that's the main reason Korra was held back as they couldn't write the show with 3 seasons in mind.

I try to ignore the LoK haters as much as I can, and you should, too. Most of their dislike for Korra is rooted in misogyny and their inability to move on from the ATLA nostalgia. The haters’ obvious lack of media literacy will show based on their fallacious and ignorant arguments, so I pay them no mind. I hope you guys have the greatest time watching LoK and I look forward to watching with you!
Nice! I love Korra every bit as much as AtLA, so looking forward to you two continuing this ride. 100% agree on the soundtrack - I can count on one hand the times I've consciously taken notice of the music when first watching a show/movie, and this is one of them. Probably my favorite score outside of John Williams' big screen stuff. Big non-spoilery thing about Korra is that the creatives had some... difficulties with Nickelodeon when it came to budget and season commitments at times, so the overall story and even some specific episode choices were impacted by that.
To thinkI never even wanted to watch any of this nonsense and was happy with just that movie. Now im on the Avatar joy ride going around again and again. Glad you've started this journey. Sometimes a bumpy ride sometimes an awesome roller coaster.

Glad to watch you guys see this show greatness but this isn’t the FINAL in your ATLA journey it has been confirmed that an Earth Avatar series that takes place after Korra lurking in the nearby future
I’ve also learned not to not like something just because people say it’s bad or you shouldn’t enjoy it. You’ve got to watch things for yourself and form your own opinion. I learned this hard after finally watching season 8 of game of thrones which actually turned out to be pretty damn good despite what a lot of people had said.
One of the big things LOK's music has over ATLA's is that it was orchestrated instead of MIDI, with the exception of ATLA's final 4ep finale which did have an orchestra, and we can all agree that is some of it's best music. Same composer for both though, Jeremy Zuckerman, fun music nerd facts. Although dang, I do really want to see ATLA in concert, I hope we get some new tour dates after it did so well for it's initial run. There are short clips floating around YT, and it sounds freaking amazing, real instruments make a BIG difference. I have no idea how one would accomplish a comic reaction, but if you pulled it off, I would watch it in a heartbeat. There's a lot of political context provided in the 6 mainline comics over how Republic City came to be, along with a bunch of interpersonal stories for each of our OG crew. Some are better than others, but they provide a great framework for understanding the state of the world in as we first encounter in Korra, and I assume by extension, the new animated movie due to come out next year. Plus you do in fact get to find out what happened to Zuko's mom. There's also an interesting standalone issue dealing with Azula a bit that just came out, and one due out soon having to do with Iroh and Jun. 👀 Much like Meesh, I started out loving Korra when it first came out, then started losing my interest and ditched it for a number of years towards the end of season 1. I did eventually pick it back up and found what to completely love about it, so I now count myself among Korra fans. Though I still have a few nitpicks with bits and pieces of it, most of those truthfully can be blamed on Nickelodeon and their stupid way of handling a very popular franchise that didn't make them much money in secondary sales like toys. The major downside to this is there are definitely a few things you can point at, especially after season 1, and say "well budget was clearly an issue here." But there is still plenty of good to be had, and I can't wait to see Dee take it all in. ❤

I love how much both of you like the music ❤ I agree LoK’s soundtrack is better in sound overall and has some incredible pieces. I think AtLA’s score is more iconic and memorable. Fun fact: when AtLA was being made they only had a sound designer, Benjamin Wynn, and a composer, Jeremy Zuckerman.
If you didn’t know, this was supposed to be one season. Nickelodeon didn’t green light a season 2 until they saw the saw the ratings. Then Nick cut part of their animation budget in season 2, so they had to go to a different company for the first half of season 2, and season 3 & 4 wasn’t green light until season 2 post-production. Then Nick cut one episode’s budget in season 4 and told them to make a recap episode or fire their staff to make the episode, to which the creators didn’t hesitate to make a recap.
I love how different Korra is from Aang, even though they are the same soul. There are no limits to what you can be in this world.

The voice actor for Amon is Steve Blum, he's done a LOT of anime voice work and other stuff. He has a fantastic voice for villain roles.

I have ATLA as a 10/10 and Korra as a 9/10. That said, I feel the same way, I prefer Korra to ATLA. It's my favorite of the two.

Legend of Korra had some absolutely massive shoes to fill following the Last Airbender and, I know it got a lot of shit, but I really enjoy it and it seems like in general people are starting to realise "Yeah, this is a really good show".

I think objectively ATLA is better. I disliked Korra at first but I’ll be honest, as I get older I think it might actually be better or at least more enjoyable even with it’s flaws.
I used to HATE korra and now I can confidently say its better 😭

I was more interested in seeing Korra but knowing it was part of the Avatar universe, i made myself watch Last Airbender beforehand so i wouldn't be lost and I ended up loving both shows. Korra is still my favorite series.
Wow!! its crazy because i was starting college in 2014, so i caught the last season of Korra Live, BUT it was a friend i met while in school that introduced me to the ATLA show, so i was catching up WHILE watching S4 live with mt friend 😅 Korra is mt favorite character and Avatar, i relate to her sooo much and im always happy to follow or get to know other fans of her ❤
The guy in the bushes reminds me of Doc and Shu from the painted Lady Episode and that’s exactly what that person is representing a little Easter egg there.

1:09 ...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who may prefer LoK a little more than AtLA. I don't think it's necessarily more mature or darker that ATLA (because ATLA gets mature and dark), I think it's that it's more *complex* than ATLA. ATLA, which is obviously aimed at young children, has a very simple drawn out storyline centered around young characters that a young audience will understand more. LoK is aimed at the same audience - who were now adults. So not only are the characters older, the story is more complex. The world is more complex. There are more layers to the plot, development, world-building, and characters - and the journeys the characters take are also more layered. Not to mention, the show deals with more specific political plots than ATLA did. What little politics in ATLA were again, very simple for a young audience. Korra gets deeper and more layered. Which is why I think I enjoy it more. I like a story with more meat to it - something that is going to stay on my mind for hours, even days after I watch. Which is what happened with Korra. Especially the more mental-health centered moments --- those really stuck with me.

This is series at first I didn’t like but it grew on me. One of the reasons it might not have been well received at first was (in opinion) because Hollywood at that point in time was really trying to push for the “strong, independent, need no man” trope and it might of rubbed people the wrong way. Of course the writers were just capitalizing on the trend I’m sure since at the time that’s what the people wanted.

ATLA for me is untouchable, it's my favorite series and I doubt anything will ever touch it. But I LOVE TLOK. I love Korra, and having watched TLOK at similar ages as the characters were, it really resonated with me deeply. I also love the world development and the exploration of a world with bending.

New subber here. Saw u watching one of my favorite animated shows of all time so I had to peep. I have this show as superior to TLA. Mostly because of the maturity and lack of filler. Even though Nickelodeon steadily screwed this show over. They still made a great product. I’ve rewatched this many many times. Hope u enjoy the journey.

The first episode of korra is my favorite, its super nostalgic now too since I watched it when it first premiered back in 2012. The emotions and being in awe with how it was different from ATLA is unforgettable to me, first impressions are everything, and they did a good job at introducing us to korra. Unfortunately the quality of the show does take bit of a dive, then its all over the place after halfway through book 2. Still its a good show overall that unfortunately suffered from the network trying to sabotage the show, its a miracle that the show is watchable after you learn about the crappy bts production lol
I also tend to say that I like Korra more, it’s definitely got more flaws in it than the original series but the things it does well really hit in a much deeper and longer lasting way to me personally

Korra is amazing! Season 1 and Season 3 are up there with season 2 of ATLA. Season 2 does get rough.
Also a reminder that Korra was approved 1 season so each season kind of wraps up everything before going on to the next one. If anything that's the main reason Korra was held back as they couldn't write the show with 3 seasons in mind.

The ressons the sky bisons look different is because all the bisons that came after Appa were rsised in the fire nation so the environment and food affected their appearance

Subscribing for your Legend of Korra adventure! Like you, I also prefer LoK over ATLA because I was able to connect with Korra better. I try to ignore the LoK haters as much as I can, and you should, too. Most of their dislike for Korra is rooted in misogyny and their inability to move on from the ATLA nostalgia. The haters’ obvious lack of media literacy will show based on their fallacious and ignorant arguments, so I pay them no mind.

I love Korra every bit as much as AtLA, so looking forward to you two continuing this ride. 100% agree on the soundtrack - I can count on one hand the times I've consciously taken notice of the music when first watching a show/movie, and this is one of them. Probably my favorite score outside of John Williams' big screen stuff.
Big non-spoilery thing about Korra is that the creatives had some... difficulties with Nickelodeon when it came to budget and season commitments at times, so the overall story and even some specific episode choices were impacted by that.
It's insane how I was in the mood randomly to watch someone react to the series and searched it, just in time to come across your channel!!

I’ve also learned not to not like something just because people say it’s bad or you shouldn’t enjoy it. You’ve got to watch things for yourself and form your own opinion. I learned this hard after finally watching season 8 of game of thrones which actually turned out to be pretty damn good despite what a lot of people had said.
One of the big things LOK's music has over ATLA's is that it was orchestrated instead of MIDI, with the exception of ATLA's final 4ep finale which did have an orchestra, and we can all agree that is some of it's best music. Same composer for both though, Jeremy Zuckerman, fun music nerd facts. Although dang, I do really want to see ATLA in concert, I hope we get some new tour dates after it did so well for it's initial run. There are short clips floating around YT, and it sounds freaking amazing, real instruments make a BIG difference.
I have no idea how one would accomplish a comic reaction, but if you pulled it off, I would watch it in a heartbeat. There's a lot of political context provided in the 6 mainline comics over how Republic City came to be, along with a bunch of interpersonal stories for each of our OG crew. Some are better than others, but they provide a great framework for understanding the state of the world in as we first encounter in Korra, and I assume by extension, the new animated movie due to come out next year. Plus you do in fact get to find out what happened to Zuko's mom. There's also an interesting standalone issue dealing with Azula a bit that just came out, and one due out soon having to do with Iroh and Jun. 👀
Much like Meesh, I started out loving Korra when it first came out, then started losing my interest and ditched it for a number of years towards the end of season 1. I did eventually pick it back up and found what to completely love about it, so I now count myself among Korra fans. Though I still have a few nitpicks with bits and pieces of it, most of those truthfully can be blamed on Nickelodeon and their stupid way of handling a very popular franchise that didn't make them much money in secondary sales like toys. The major downside to this is there are definitely a few things you can point at, especially after season 1, and say "well budget was clearly an issue here." But there is still plenty of good to be had, and I can't wait to see Dee take it all in. ❤

I love how much both of you like the music ❤ I agree LoK’s soundtrack is better in sound overall and has some incredible pieces. I think AtLA’s score is more iconic and memorable.

If you didn’t know, this was supposed to be one season. Nickelodeon didn’t green light a season 2 until they saw the saw the ratings. Then Nick cut part of their animation budget in season 2, so they had to go to a different company for the first half of season 2, and season 3 & 4 wasn’t green light until season 2 post-production. Then Nick cut one episode’s budget in season 4 and told them to make a recap episode or fire their staff to make the episode, to which the creators didn’t hesitate to make a recap.
I’m so exited for these reactions, season 3 especially 🤓
