The fact they they show such realistic abuse and the psychology of a victim (who is also a child) is incredible. This show is so well written words cannot describe it (ironically). This show really is something else. No show will ever even get close to the level of Avatar The Last Airbender
the scene of Zuko remembering the few happy moments of his childhood briefly and contrasting them with him now, always makes me cry, there's something so powerful about it for me
Something to keep notice of is that the story of Zuko’s banishment isn’t common knowledge. His crew, likely decent ranking members of the Fire navy (having both the prince and the Firelords brother on board) never knew this. Admiral Sideburns knows cause he was there (he’s sitting behind Iroh and this young girl during that scene). So kinda keep that in the back of your head that Zuko’s scaring and banishment seemed partially covered up.
@@addictedtoair1351 at that point in the story he was wanted by the fire nation for his role in the Siege of the North. Azula is literally shown handing out wanted posters. So the Earth Kingdom colonies definitely would’ve known and word easily would’ve spread. As no one brings this up in Book 3, I’d argue that it was hushed away (like the war in Ba Sing Sei) or more likely just not told to the general populace.
The saddest thing is that since the avatar hadn't been seen in 100 years, Ozai basically told Zuko "I'm kicking you after I burnt you in front of everyone, don't come back". Finding the avatar was basically an impossible goal
Your reaction and empathy for Zuko and how he got his scar was beautiful. Cry or no cry, there's no arguing that this show has its impact. Keep the great reactions coming!
Really enjoy your reactions. Tremendous. Its funny, lots of people wouldn't rate this book as their favorite, but this episode is one of the best. You two liked Zuko from the start but my friends and I only liked Uncle Iroh until this episode. But its like you said, they went for it, gave you soooooo much and it felt great to finally know about the scar and why Zhao hates Zuko. Personally I'm looking forward to the next... ah hell all of em. I looking forward to all of em. Especially Bato.
I’m hoping that these girls are unlike other youtubers, aware of how abuse victims like Zuko would act in reality, they often times make excuses for their abusers and oftentimes go back thinking it will be better or different than before
Omg, yes! So many youtube reactors don't seem to understand how child abuse victims behave. I myself was emotionally and physically abused by my mother in my childhood and it took me 26 years to realize that my mom was the actual villain and that growing up I didn't do anything wrong. I still yearn for her approval though, but at least now I know I was never going to get it from her, no matter what I did. Zuko has so many repressed feelings of shame and guilt, he just doesn't know how to process them. His anger issues and temper tantrums are caused by deep emotional trauma. Zuko lashes out at Iroh because he knows Iroh would never hurt him or leave him. He takes his frustration out on his uncle because he knows Iroh is his only safe haven. Iroh loves Zuko unconditionally and understands him completely, even when Zuko is at his worst.
@@rumaristo129 I think deep inside Zuko knows Iroh cares about him but he is not aware of this until the very end. He was not able to see Iroh's love which is so damn sad to me. He doesn't understand how anyone can care about him
I love how this show doles out backstory over time. It never overloads you with too much. On the second watching you can look at some scenes/relationships differently.
this is never explained in the show but there are 4 air nomad temples, east and west temples were largely where female airbenders lived and north and south is where mostly male airbenders lived. they are nomads so they regularly migrate between temples. so i dont think anyone is raised with "parents" or "family" as we know it. its seems to be a community of monks raising children but also having at least one elder/adult be a kid's main guardian. literally embodying 'it takes a village..'
True. In episode 2, when Zuko takes Aang prisoner, he comments that the staff will make a nice gift for his father. He then adds something like ''I guess you wouldn't know anything about fathers, being an air nomad''
Felt for both Aang and Zuko this episode... With Aang, Gyatso said that normally Avatars would be told they're the Avatar at the age of 16, and I believe that's a very important detail to keep in mind. Because at least before they turned 16, they would've at least had a childhood and had time to grow and mature. That wasn't the case for Aang. He wasn't ready to take on such heavy burdens and responsibilities and at his age, he was naturally overwhelmed, scared, and confused. What's sad is that he thought he was alone in all of this when he really wasn't. With Zuko, his story is just messed up. He's only a teenager and he got burned and banished by his own father just because he was kind and cared too deeply for his countrymen. He refuses to fight someone dear to him when his honor was at stake...and because he "learned his lesson" after this, he now never backs down when his honor is questioned. Sending Zuko to find the Avatar was basically an impossible task. His father most likely knew that but sent his son away anyways, which honestly already tells you a lot about how he feels for his son. Mark Hamil also voices Firelord Ozai!
Mhm! Their backstories are basically a juxtaposition of responsibility: Aang was forced to dawn his avatar responsibilities while underage and needed more time to grow and mature B4 he was ready, and Zuko got punished/exiled for using his responsibilities as a prince for the right reasons.
@lalalalisa41 Cut to the Book 3 opener, and we have Aang feeling like he has to redeem himself alone after almost dying at Ba Sing Se and Zuko, who has 'redeemed' himself but only bc he obeyed Ozai and despite that Azula was the 1 who briefly killed Aang, she also framed Zuko for Aang's near death as a precautionary measure to save her own skin, so that if Aang is dead, Zuko is Azula's eternal slave, but if Aang is alive, Zuko gets repunished in Azula's place!! At this point, they're in reversed roles from their respective backstories! Damn, no wonder they became best friends when the hundred-year war ended!!!
Please be careful when reading the comments section, there's always some clever commenter that thinks they aren't giving away spoilers but instead raise or lower expectations for certain episodes on the show and give away too many hints. Let them enjoy the show naturally guys - one of the joys of watching ATLA (or any show) is not expecting what's coming.
You didn’t get to see firelord ozai’s face because zuko wasn’t looking at his face, I can’t believed you weren’t shocked when you saw iroh redirecting lightning. Also it’s sad to know that gyatso wouldn’t let them take aang away from him, and aang never got to know that. You keep asking if aang had parents, well he had but I think they get separated from them to “detach themselves from worldly concerns and reach spiritual enlightenment”, gyatso was the closed thing aang had as a parent figure
They picked up on the idea that waterbenders might be able to control the water in people's bodies in an earlier episode. They may have missed the lightning as a firebender skill, but they're still ahead of the game, I'd say.
Seeing your reaction to this was so validating. I feel the same way. Even when I'm watching reactors, I wince and look away every time Zuko screams. It's horrible, and I think most people try to protect themselves from it, so they talk over it, or they even try to joke. But your reactions were genuine and vulnerable, so thanks for sharing it.
The scene where the painting or drawing of Zuko as a happy, relatively normal child fades out to reveal the current face of Zuko, angry, bitter, and abused, is so gut-wrenching. Ozai really was a monster.
This is one of many emotional moments in this series. Also remember the girl standing in front of Iroh that was smirking when Zuko got burned by his father.
i cry every time as well. zuko has such a horrible backstory. the only positive thing in his life, by far, is his uncle, who is teaching him so many valuable lessons. HE is zuko's father for all i care
I honestly forgot just how damn good this episode was. Holy crap I was tearing up along with you guys, and man I forgot how hard that music hits man. Geez this episode was perfect.
11:14 This is the time I've seen someone cry when Zuko wailed from the his father's wrath, Insta sub. I know this is a kid shows, but I don't doubt that Zuko was physical abuse as well emotionally.
This episode kind of marks the turning point where this series evolves from a good kids' show into something more. Zuko doesn't chase the Avatar for the sake of evil, he just wants his father to love him again.
That's an episode I love a lot. It places Aang and Zuko as equal, characters we both follow the story of. That eye sight they exchanged is meaningfull. The thing is, Zuko was 13 when his father burned his face and bannished him. So both wer kinda the same age when tragedy occured.
Wow, what a fantastic reaction. You brought me back to my first time watching, I love seeing people seriously emotionally invest themselves into the show and take it seriously. ATLA has so much comedy, but there’s also so much drama and serious storytelling in episodes like this. New fav reaction series easily!
You can see the rage and the pain in Zuko here. You can also see how it wasn't always so with him. Fighting to get back what was taken from him is going to be his biggest challenge.
also, by sending zuko after the avatar, his father knew he was sending him on an impossible task. He sent him away on a wild goose hunt to get rid of him
12:40 idk if this is a spoil but The only thing that Zuko has inherited from his father is his looks. Hahahaha I can't believe how someone can burn the face of someone who looks exactly like a young version of themself.
in both the past and the present day of this episode, aang has no conscious control of the avatar state, but it does act on his subconscious desires. he was encased in ice because he _did_ want to run away from the world. if he had been in a different state of mind, things would have gone differently, as they did at the end of the episode. in one of the flashbacks in this episode, you get a glimpse of a really important character that we'll meet in season two.
This was the episode where I realized there was something deeper being displayed in this show. Yes, it had cool visuals and an interesting premise but this was when I realized just how complex and fleshed out these characters are and were continuing to become.
Your reactions to the origin of Zukos scar was exactly the same as my gfs when I first showed her this show. Horror, disgust, deep sadness, shock, a new found pity or sorrow for Zuko
I loved your reaction so much i love how you already feel so much for the characters and love them already. These characters are really so precious and they deserve the world. Zuko and Aang have both been through so much and they're both my favorite characters so i'm so in love with this episode. Your crying is a big mood! SAME :(
One of the best episodes in the entire series!!! And finally I can reveal a tiny bit of lore (it isn’t spoilers): this is an old tradition that only royalty/aristocracy seem to still care about, but firebenders that lose important Agni Kais will sometimes shave parts of their heads to show humility. The hair on the crown of the head (usually styled as a topknot or ponytail), is sacred and is never cut off except in dire circumstances. This is likely why Zuko had that god awful hairstyle and kept it so cleanly shaven. Just some fun info to think about :)
Their reactions to this makes me look forward to irohs backstory being revealed to them. Uncle iroh is my literal favorite character in all of animation
@@KlooKloo UH NO. That's exactly one of the reasons RLM review of The Phamtom Menace ripped it because it was supposed to be a kid's show but it was way too complicated and "deep". Nickelodeon got swindled which worked out for the fans.
@@KlooKloo Are you lost? Let me help since it seems you've gotten confused. I am disagreeing with your point and offering a rebuttal that your point is nonsense. Kids shows shouldn't be deep. New to your channel and playing catch-up: Zuko, begging on his knees for his FATHER'S forgiveness and getting burned for it, haunts me. My poor sweet baby boy. Tears every time.
2:02 The reason he doesn't have a bag (other than he simple hasn't gotten one) is because he doesn't need one. This isn't really a spoiler but a cool little fact you'll learn later but airbenders can control their body temperature through their breathing. This is how they can live comfortably on top of cold high mountains with such thin clothes.
Aang is my favourite Character and Zuko is the best character in probably any cartoon.... maybe after Iroh lol, but the parallels here are so strong and shows so much complexity between these 2 main characters. Aang the protagonist is in this situation because he was selfish (at least in that moment) and Zuko the antagonist is in this situation because he was selfless, life has forced both of them to turn a new page on their lives making Aang more selfless and Zuko more selfish. This show is Amazing because by the end, Aang isn't gonna finish off all selfless and Zuko isn't going all Selfish... having both in them makes them balanced, complex and relatable. Sokka, Katara And basically any main character on the show are DEEP.
Yeah girls, I totally understand you, I also cried with Zuko's backstory and how cruel was, when he was only 13. is something a child should never go through. I loved your reaction... keep it up Brazil here ❤️
It’s a great sign that you guys feel so strongly this early. This is sadly just a glimpse of what zuko has and will endure though. Also I love this episode so much more after you get more on the flashbacks in S3 (the beach)
This was 1 of 3 episodes that made me cry, 1 per season. Gyatso was his father figure and his best friend. Seeeing the deep concern, shocks, and sadness on gyatsos face, and the sadness and regret on aangs face when he said "i never saw gyatso again", i was bawling.
I'm not sure it's possible for me to love any characters more than these ones, all 5 of the main characters: Katara, Aang, Uncle Iroh, Zuko, and Sokka. I love them in approximately that order. I love the other characters more than Sokka, but I love Sokka enough that it makes me really happy that some people have him as their favorite character.
that wasn't the face of Zuko's mother in those brief scenes shown prior to the lightning strike, when Zuko is alone in his quarters....it was a shot of Zuko's face before being burned. It's meant to show the contrast between his face and life then...versus now. His face was just so fair it sort of looked feminine.
So it’s implied that the air benders didn’t really have parents Aang never mentions a mother/father with only Monk Geyatsu being his parental figure. Later in the series there’s a brief scene of Aang being born and it’s within a group, no distinguishable mom. So likely Aang was raised communally not traditionally as we’d see it.
Watching this reaction I just realised something the 1st time Aang & Appa were drowning he went into the Avatar State & froze the two of them this time though the Avatar state helped them escape. It’s almost as though the universe knew the 1st time that it was not the right time for him but this 2nd time was when the Avatar was needed
This episode is very pivotal to the whole show. It helps you understand the past, the future, and the trauma of the main characters. Everything else springs from this episode... all the way to the finale.

"this young girl". Looking back at this scene it's really cool to see Azula a full half a season before her proper introduction
@@joaopedroauriemo and watching gleefully as their dad burns her brother
Then how earth people from zuko alone episode know about his banishment
Zuko's development is amazing. Everything in this show is ❤️
Why are you giving spoilers?
Yeah, he is not my favorite character, but his development is by far one of the best I've ever seen in an animated series.
@@diamondsandpearls7213 I don't think that was a spoiler though 🤔
Not my intention.
It also slowly introduces the various bending skills and techniques.
this is never explained in the show but there are 4 air nomad temples, east and west temples were largely where female airbenders lived and north and south is where mostly male airbenders lived. they are nomads so they regularly migrate between temples.
so i dont think anyone is raised with "parents" or "family" as we know it. its seems to be a community of monks raising children but also having at least one elder/adult be a kid's main guardian.
literally embodying 'it takes a village..'
Mhm! Their backstories are basically a juxtaposition of responsibility:
Aang was forced to dawn his avatar responsibilities while underage and needed more time to grow and mature B4 he was ready, and Zuko got punished/exiled for using his responsibilities as a prince for the right reasons.
@MichaelOrd-k9w The duology with these two will never not fascinate me 😊
@lalalalisa41 Cut to the Book 3 opener, and we have Aang feeling like he has to redeem himself alone after almost dying at Ba Sing Se and Zuko, who has 'redeemed' himself but only bc he obeyed Ozai and despite that Azula was the 1 who briefly killed Aang, she also framed Zuko for Aang's near death as a precautionary measure to save her own skin, so that if Aang is dead, Zuko is Azula's eternal slave, but if Aang is alive, Zuko gets repunished in Azula's place!!
People are crazy with spoiler posts
"I looked away."
That always gets me.
He must have felt so freaking guilty.
They crying this early… this show is gonna be tough on them.
You two always seem so rational and I was afraid you going to be really judgmental of Aang but you also so compassionate understanding both sides
This is one of many emotional moments in this series.
Also remember the girl standing in front of Iroh that was smirking when Zuko got burned by his father.
Dude the echo (maybe not echo but the way he screamed) of zuko's painful scream added that much more sadness to the scene
i cry every time as well. zuko has such a horrible backstory. the only positive thing in his life, by far, is his uncle, who is teaching him so many valuable lessons. HE is zuko's father for all i care
First time tearbending!
It was episode 10 actually when they blew up the dam
I honestly forgot just how damn good this episode was. Holy crap I was tearing up along with you guys, and man I forgot how hard that music hits man. Geez this episode was perfect.
whatever amount of emotion you show in early episodes will be multiplied in the later episodes
Looking forward to your every reaction. ❤️
The look of horror on your faces when Ozai burned zuko shows how much you already care for zukos character and see why he is the way that he is.
It is so amazing that Aang gives Zuko hope isn't that a beautiful dynamic
Wow, what a fantastic reaction. You brought me back to my first time watching, I love seeing people seriously emotionally invest themselves into the show and take it seriously. ATLA has so much comedy, but there’s also so much drama and serious storytelling in episodes like this. New fav reaction series easily!
Did you notice the voice actor for Zuko’s father Ozai? It was Mark Hamill.
I think what makes this even sadder was that while Zuko was begging for mercy, he was also in tears
You can see the rage and the pain in Zuko here. You can also see how it wasn't always so with him. Fighting to get back what was taken from him is going to be his biggest challenge.
ive watched this reaction a dozen times. your reaction is just so genuine and heartfelt. Its really moving how much youve bonded with the characters.
also, by sending zuko after the avatar, his father knew he was sending him on an impossible task. He sent him away on a wild goose hunt to get rid of him
And ... that's why Zuko is the only bad boy in a show that I can really love.
One of the series most defining episodes why Aang ran away and why Zuko was banished their stories really parallel each other.
Its heart-wrenching to see you two crying over Zuko's story...when you see how he got the scar...
12:40 idk if this is a spoil but
The only thing that Zuko has inherited from his father is his looks. Hahahaha
I can't believe how someone can burn the face of someone who looks exactly like a young version of themself.
in both the past and the present day of this episode, aang has no conscious control of the avatar state, but it does act on his subconscious desires. he was encased in ice because he _did_ want to run away from the world. if he had been in a different state of mind, things would have gone differently, as they did at the end of the episode.
in one of the flashbacks in this episode, you get a glimpse of a really important character that we'll meet in season two.
This was the episode where I realized there was something deeper being displayed in this show. Yes, it had cool visuals and an interesting premise but this was when I realized just how complex and fleshed out these characters are and were continuing to become.
If you guys are crying now, you aint even close to ready for season 2
Your reactions to the origin of Zukos scar was exactly the same as my gfs when I first showed her this show. Horror, disgust, deep sadness, shock, a new found pity or sorrow for Zuko
This episode covers both Aang and Zuko's (A & Z) past which now motivates their futures.
I loved your reaction so much i love how you already feel so much for the characters and love them already. These characters are really so precious and they deserve the world. Zuko and Aang have both been through so much and they're both my favorite characters so i'm so in love with this episode. Your crying is a big mood! SAME :(
It's my favorite episode of entire Avatar series. I watched it multiple times.
One of the best episodes in the entire series!!! And finally I can reveal a tiny bit of lore (it isn’t spoilers):
this is an old tradition that only royalty/aristocracy seem to still care about, but firebenders that lose important Agni Kais will sometimes shave parts of their heads to show humility. The hair on the crown of the head (usually styled as a topknot or ponytail), is sacred and is never cut off except in dire circumstances. This is likely why Zuko had that god awful hairstyle and kept it so cleanly shaven.
Just some fun info to think about :)
Zuko takes his honor seriously afterall 😔
I've seen hundreds of series and Zuko has the best redemption story ever
Man i cant wait for the Zuko Alone ep reaction
I can't wait for tales of ba sing se
Their reactions to this makes me look forward to irohs backstory being revealed to them. Uncle iroh is my literal favorite character in all of animation
The thumbnail alone is telling me that this is gonna break them
You guys are going to learn what we all did years ago; this is a kid's show but it's not for kids.
is not only for kids*
It's what kids deserve: deep, realistic characters and morally complex storytelling.
@@KlooKloo UH NO. That's exactly one of the reasons RLM review of The Phamtom Menace ripped it because it was supposed to be a kid's show but it was way too complicated and "deep". Nickelodeon got swindled which worked out for the fans.
@@trini_staple what in god's name are you blathering about
@@KlooKloo Are you lost? Let me help since it seems you've gotten confused. I am disagreeing with your point and offering a rebuttal that your point is nonsense. Kids shows shouldn't be deep. They should be simple and easy for kids to get. This is the bad guy, this is the good guy, the bad guy wants to do this bad thing and it's up to the good guy to stop him. I even gave an example where Red Letter Media (RLM) did a thorough analysis of The Phantom Menace and exposed it for the utter trash that it is. One of his critiques was that it was listed as being "for kids" but he showed it was extremely complicated for kids to grasp and even highlighted a part of the movie as visual aid. Did you get that?
You both are so sweet. It's okay to cry. I'm sure I speak for many when I say we love to see your authentic reactions. It is such a powerful episode. You each express yourselves so well. And I enjoy to hear your thoughts and analyses afterwards too. Great job Milena and Lola 👍🏽 I feel connected, and that is the greatest high for me.
don't read the comments section, they will spoiler, but I'm SUUUPER stoked to see you guys enjoy the rest of the show
People are just crazy with spoiler posts. They're insane
Fire nation: hand sanitizer
Air nomads: Germs
Aang: the 0.01% germ enjoying life 😎
i love him
Rowan Delevingne lol don’t we all. He would literally risk his life to save his enemy his heart is so pure 😭😭
Zuko apologized to his uncle for how he treated him earlier. If you cried for this episode then I can’t wait to see you react to “tales of ba sing se”
i've already seen it and i'm still not prepared.
New to your channel and playing catch-up:
Zuko, begging on his knees for his FATHER'S forgiveness and getting burned for it, haunts me. My poor sweet baby boy. Tears every time.
A man needs to be on a show, get watched by these two and get called "my sweet boy" in order to accomplish life.
No somoene just needs to watch this show to accomplish life lmfao
Iroh really is one of the best parent figures in all of fiction
2:02
The reason he doesn't have a bag (other than he simple hasn't gotten one) is because he doesn't need one. This isn't really a spoiler but a cool little fact you'll learn later but airbenders can control their body temperature through their breathing. This is how they can live comfortably on top of cold high mountains with such thin clothes.
Oh man, your reactions got me the feels.
Zuko always been my Favourite, right behind Uncle Iroh.
I loved your reaction... keep it up
Brazil here ❤️
It’s a great sign that you guys feel so strongly this early. This is sadly just a glimpse of what zuko has and will endure though. Also I love this episode so much more after you get more on the flashbacks in S3 (the beach)
Why the need to mention specific episodes and spoil things? Let them watch and figure it out on their own.
Zuko is my favourite character
I'm not sure it's possible for me to love any characters more than these ones, all 5 of the main characters: Katara, Aang, Uncle Iroh, Zuko, and Sokka.
I love them in approximately that order. I love the other characters more than Sokka, but I love Sokka enough that it makes me really happy that some people have him as their favorite character.
11:15 no one knows Azula was standing right next to Iroh. 🤣, man. I love this show.
Aang does have parents but air nomad children were taken I believe at birth. Monks aren’t raised by their parents
I love at 12:18 they look at each other crying and smile. Man if they cried at this episode they gonna be cried out by the end.
yeeeah totally
that wasn't the face of Zuko's mother in those brief scenes shown prior to the lightning strike, when Zuko is alone in his quarters....it was a shot of Zuko's face before being burned.
Lola's reactions to this episode are the best I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot lol
She's so smart and beautiful T-Tv
Fun fact Aang doesn’t need a sleeping bag because he can control the air around him making him warm
Your reactions are so pure and emotional. I love it! I will continue watching avatar with you. ❤
People put spoilers in the comments be careful
These girls are going to dehydrate in Tales of Ba Sing Se
Watching this reaction I just realised something the 1st time Aang & Appa were drowning he went into the Avatar State & froze the two of them this time though the Avatar state helped them escape.
It’s almost as though the universe knew the 1st time that it was not the right time for him but this 2nd time was when the Avatar was needed
This episode is very pivotal to the whole show. It helps you understand the past, the future, and the trauma of the main characters. Everything else springs from this episode... all the way to the finale.
You know we're all waiting for them to reach THAT episode in book two.
