The thing that gets me abt Colin is that they leaned into the wrong trope. Colin's charm comes from his boy-next-door, puppy dog eyes, curious and sunshine-y personality. Instead of giving us that they tried to make him this hunky sex symbol and it just didn't translate well which is a shame

if feel like a lot of ppl r missing the point, he loses himself because he’s been on his travels for so long and hasn’t had any contact w pen. He tries to become someone he’s not, and conform to societies standards of what a man should act like, he also gets validation from his brothers (instead of pen) by acting more like them.
But then Colin realises that when he is with pen he can act like his sweet self because she loves him the way he is. He doesn’t have to change. They sorta rushed it but you can see Colin becoming himself again and not this ‘playboy’ at the end of pt2.

I think my biggest problem this season was that they prioritized the drama over the romance in a romance show. I mean we all love for the drama, but if the mid-season cliffhanger had been Colin finding out about Whistledown then we could have dealt with his whiney boy era before the sexy times and maybe we could have actually enjoyed them instead of cringing through them thinking about what was coming up when he found out. He also could have gotten over himself faster. It just felt like a wasted season because they were only really happily married for like 5 minutes at the end.

So Penelope being a spinster makes more sense in the books timeline. Because Netflix decided to do the storyline out of order, it kind of messes up a lot of things. In the book timeline, Penelope is 28 during this period. So whenever people think she's a spinster or she talks about how she's a spinster, it makes a lot more sense in the books. Netflix pushing up her timeline, yet keeping all the elements and comments of her being a spinster made it really confusing and laughable.
It also makes more sense that it is difficult for her to part ways with her "Lady Whistledown" persona since she's been writing her for 10 years. It became a huge part of her identity.

I think Lady Danbury’s anger makes more sense when you consider it with the context we gained in Queen Charlotte.
Agatha was groomed, from a very young age, to be her geriatric husband’s perfect wife. She had to love his favorite color, eat his favorite foods, be the type of woman he desired. Her individuality was stripped away to suit him. Then she was repeatedly raped over the course of their marriage and forced to bear his children. In QC, we see that Agatha LOATHED her husband. She would scrub her skin after being raped and feared getting pregnant again. That level of intense and pervasive trauma doesn’t go away easily. He might have been 10 but Agatha’s marriage benefitted his family, especially when her husband became part of the Ton/titled. Also, trauma doesn’t have an expiration date. This was their first time seeing each other since he ratted her out, it makes sense that her hurt would bubble back to the surface.

Making this season about Colin and Penelope was such a massive mistake. Because the tension in regard to them, their love story and everything with Whistledown is over now. Everything expected with that storyline of everything I just mentioned was absolutely wasted. Colin’s undying love for Pen came out of absolutely nowhere. Pen’s character development is non existent. The whole reveal to everyone about Whistledown felt like it didn’t even matter. And everything about this season is so painfully rushed and all over the place.

The entire build up was S1/S2. The only thing that is different from this season to prior is that it did have build up. All the allusions to past season show Colin had strong feelings for Penelope but he never realized she can be more than a friend. Colin is the one who seeks her out at the dances, Colin is the one who asks her to dance, Colin is the one who writes her letters and is happy she responds. It wasn't rushed at all...i'd argue waiting til Ep 4 for them to come together was still too slow in some ways.

Colin gave Cressida the cut direct episode 1 to dance with Penelope after she ruined the dress Pen just told him she loved, he made an active attempt to talk to Pen during the Marina calling hour (after her mom said talk to her other daughters), he actively talked to her even while courting Marina and Pen trying to stop him from being trapped, the whole Jack scandal with him saving her, he calls her Pen only...like there is a LOT there that indicates they have a strong friendship. If you're referring to more raunchyness, its pretty clear Colin does not like sex for sex sake without intimacy but he was far more romantic than any other lead with his actions and dialogue.

Hell, just a season back in the finale we had him saying he would never court her and it was not one of those instances where she just didn't hear the whole convo, he was serious, so how did this change so drastically? We never actually saw him falling for her or at least executed well. And no it's not about raunchiness and Colin does not like sex for sex sake... season 1 & 2 Colin, cause who tf is this season's Colin? And sexual attraction is indeed an important part of a "friends to lovers" trope cause that's one of the things that changes when one of them never saw the other that way. Watching the season and John and Francesca’s relationship play out it kind of makes sense to me that she would have a bit of a crush John’s sister. Throughout the season it never seemed to me that Francesca had any real interest in any of the men that pursued her, while John was different, there still seemed to be something that wasn’t completely right for Francesca. Yes that something could have just been nerves, but the way that they were focusing so much on those ‘nerves’ made it seem like much more. In the context of the show this sort of crush or admiration she seems to have makes sense to me, but again I have not read the original source material and I am also looking at this from the lenses of a queer girl so please grain of salt.

There's literally no explanation on why he decided to change on a whim like that. Your Colin opinions are so true and so brave. And no shade to the actor, because it wouldn't be as bad for him if the writers didn't try to force him to be the debonair "rake" trope (again, we already got that with every other male lead anyway), they should have just let him be the dweeb we know him to be. That could have been cute and different.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually hate the way this season LOOKS. After the disaster that was season three, I wanted to go back and watch the previous seasons to see just what exactly rubbed me the wrong way (besides the bad writing and even worse pacing), and I found it. It’s the way the whole thing looks, lighting, makeup and costuming mainly. In s1 and 2, the lighting was so gorgeous and it fit the context of the characters and scene. S1 is very blue tinted, the night tends to be more of a cool shade to fit Daphne’s colour palette, and s2 is very pink tinted, as the sharmas generally wear warmer shades. It just gave an air of true personality to everything. In s3, the lighting is….normal? Dull? I think it might be something to do with the type of camera they used (probably digital). Idk it just took away some of that bridgerton spark for me. And then there’s the issue of Colin and Penelope’s makeup. Oh boy. When Penelope walked into the ball with a literal bold glamour filter on, I was like..what? I get it’s not supposed to be historically accurate, but it threw me off so bad. I wasn’t thinking about pen’s big moment, I was thinking about why the hell she was suddenly wearing eyelash extensions. I know she’s supposed to look more mature, but Kate in s2 achieved that just fine with minimal makeup. And Colin looks like he just had Botox, which is not something I want in my period piece romance show. And those costumes…. I’m sorry but yikes. For a show that is marketed as a regency/fantasy romance show, there was BARELY any regency in those costumes. The fabrics were far too modern and I know that bridgerton is no stranger to modern fabrics but literally every character was suddenly wearing three different ones at once and it gave me the ickkkkk. Like it’s not regency anymore besides a very loose interpretation of the empire waistline, and it, again, took away from the general experience, the LAST thing a showrunner wants a viewer to think. In s1 and 2, bridgerton’s costuming was the perfect mix of period accurate and modern. Modern enough to stand out, period accurate enough for it to still be a period drama. S3’s costuming was simply a mess.

They murdered Colin "MY WIFE" Bridgerton 😣 Penelope totally deserved better! You'd think after 2+ seasons of her pining over him we'd see him earn her... We barely got 2 episodes of him completely besotted with her and then he's so blinded by anger/jealousy/hurt he doesn't even think of how his actions/words come across. Then they try to wrap it up with a beautiful love confession where he's lucky he gets to stand by her side. Like when has he stood by her side?! Philipa is the one that breaks the tension when the ton is staring at her. He could have shown his support but no he just stands there. Plus he says that AFTER the Queen/ ton have kind of accepted Pen. It would have hit so much stronger if he'd have said it before no matter what society's reaction would be... Yeah I was really hoping that Cressida and Eloise would be friends at the very least. Eloise doesn't really grow as much in this season. She's still very much a Privileged and entitled rich woman while Cressida came from the same lvl of class, but had to struggle in order to get married. Eloise would learn that not all of the women in the Ton would have the same opportunities like she did: A strong support network, a rich and wealthy background like she does.
Eloise could have grown into a better person and helped Cressida with getting a husband due to her connections. I can sympathize with Cressida and I feel so bad for her at the end of the season. She was screwed over so many times. She was a product of the times and shackled into a role which she wanted to get out of through a better marriage. If the roles were reversed and we saw things from Cressida's POV (Her abusive father and dismissive, critical mother) I can see the audience wanting to side with a woman who tried to better herself and getting a better match within her own class. Just sucks all around.
We could have had a very complicated story between women who were born into very different backgrounds and how they could have changed each other for the better.
But alas we have this.... so.... :(

ugh from the minute he appeared on camera Colin was just not doing it for me!! I found him so much more attractive in s2, they really didn’t need to yassify him and cosplay him as a pirate to try and make him more appealing. He looked so wholesome, sweet and sensitive before, and while I get that he was apparently just doing the whole rake thing for show, it wasn’t made clear why he felt the need to change himself so much. Especially after travelling and going away so often in previous seasons, and claiming to ‘find himself’ each time he returned.
ugh idk. His bouffant hair and high collared cloaks were highkey giving me creepy vampire vibes. There was also something going on with his eyes that put me off…they just never seemed tender or to express enough. He showed more tenderness of expression when he had a storyline with Marina, not sure why he struggled with that with Pen. But perhaps that’s on the actors own abilities.
For me, Penelope really carried their interactions, and their entire relationship if i’m honest. She had more chemistry with that naturalist Lord D, and I’m not ashamed to say I was even rooting for them! He was the first man to actually see and appreciate Pen without having to be taught or enlightened to her. Colin was just…there. They made him a shell of a character this season and it’s such a shame considering the potential Colin had. Not one flashback scene of his and Pen’s early friendship, or of his travels abroad, or the letters he and Pen exchanged…If anything this season was more about the unravelling of the Whistledown secret than about the love story between Polin. And that’s where they messed up, by making Polin’s long awaited love story a subplot to the main plot of Whistledown’s unveiling.
*sigh* Season 3 was badly written, ill-thought out, and just truly unsatisfying. I will say though, they had a mountain to climb trying follow Kanthony. Season 2 completely set the bar for Brigerton, it was the shows high water mark without question. Sadly, Kanthony’s scenes in Season 3 were the only thing motivating me to keep going.

The reason why it was so unbearable was because the writing was so bad and didn't even make sense for Colin. Every time they tried to explain that his "glow up" and sleeping around is suppose to make us feel weird and uncomfortable because he's not being himself is just a poor excuse to me for such terrible writing choices. There's literally no explanation on why he decided to change on a whim like that. He could've done that in season 2 since it was right after his Marina scandal, but he didn't and he still visited her being himself which makes me feel, due to the bad writing in his own season, that he likes Marina more than he does Penelope. Nothing makes sense for him. I need justice for his writing. Where is my awkward, dad joke making, foodie sweet boy? That would've been so refreshing to see. And why didn't we get that side of him after him and Penelope finally decided to make it official? Wasn't that the point? That he stops being a rake and back to himself? He's a prop in his own season because they gave him no seasoning. Look how they massacred my boy.

ahh appreciate your well-balanced takes!! your vibes remind me a bit of Kennie JD and her bad movies in a beat series, your makeup is deadly!!
i feel as though the story for this season is the first draft for me. [this opinion comes from reading and writing too many fanfics so pls take a grain of salt] what's a common but unspoken hurdle in writing is that you can't just apply all of your ideas into one story with an even shorter run time, because like you said!! there are EIGHT children we have to experience. so i noticed the ideas each bridgerton was given but it's the execution is where it's awkward.
And so when a season rolls around i like to view it as an 'all-you-can=eat buffet' where i choose which story line to follow and skip the rest because of the 'meh execution' we’ve come to expect.
i dont know if youre aware of this movie, but Emma [2020] was what i expected from Pen and Colin because of the similiar traits they both have. Emma and Mr Knightley are the classic friends to lovers trope [jane austen you will ALWAYS be famous] and!!! not only it established their dynamic by showing the casual intimacy [that pen and colin did NAWT have] but we the audience were able to empathise and root for them to be together. I found myself confused at best with this season because I’m not confident of their casual intimacy. like yeah they’re friends…… but where’s the sauce??

I thought I was going crazy and I was GAGGED at the end when it was revealed she is actually interested in women!

I kinda blame the shift in power behind the scenes because after two great seasons. Then this sudden shift to someone who wants to change absolutely everything. It gave a little whiplash. (Idc if you call me a hater. It’s how I feel.) It was too ambitious for what was going on. Each season focused on one character being the A plot and lady Whistledown being the B plot. Then they DID have the time crunch with only the 8 episodes. So maybe they should’ve just focused on like one big A plot and small B plot for the season. Then at the VERY end. Focus more on the B plot and the start of the C plot with Cressida. Cut out everything else that doesn’t have to do with the Bridgerton family.

I love Penelope so much. She is my favourite character and I was so let down by season 3. I was so looking forward to it. Colin needed more. He needed to be more interesting and sweet. I’m a nerd (gonna own it) and I adore fandom Colin from fanfics and so on. The fandom writes him ten times better! They make him funny, sweet and interesting! Like I so badly wish Colin was written like that in canon…and I wish Penelope had rejected the proposal and we got the fandom version of Colin grovelling to his brothers about Penelope not wanting him anymore!
Also I wanted Colin to know about Penelope being Mrs Whistledown before he proposed and to be frank, when he asked her if she was going to marry him or not, I thought she was going to just say ‘I’m lady whistledown’
ALSO the comment about Penelope entrapping him! And Penelope didn’t react! Like gal! Please!!

Fyi the reason why "Simon" didn't show up in season 2 was because he turned down the role for a movie career. They wanted Daphne and Simon to be in season 2. We did see Daphne a little bit but without Simon it was odd.
So seeing Anthony & Kate is not surprising at all. Especially since everyone is literally living in his house. It's not like Daphne, whom was physically living elsewhere.

I think Pen "thinks" she is the laughing stock of the Ton more than she truly is... it's a nod to her insecurity after being out in society a year early, entering her 3rd year, and never being asked to dance once except from Colin, only to be alone in a room with him (exposing cousin Jack) but she is thinking "whoah is this how babies are made?!" To moments later losing El and being "found out" about LW -- a huge threat, only to hear Colin break her heart and embarrass her saying he would never court her. The lack of attention to her for two seasons, plus the eligible men's laughter and her family belittling her for her entire life all fueled her beliefs. When men did talk to her, she struggled and that also led to real evidence of rejection. It's like picking up a top thinking you might like it and putting it on the rack quickly because you realize it's wrong.

Very unpopular opinion: I would've LOVED for Penelope to choose Lord Deplin & that they didn't let her go trough this whole "Glow-up". Penelope is an extremly interessting and layerd Character. She was allways pretty & at the same time allways very flawed, her writings as Whistledown shown over an over again that the constant shunning off the Society got to her. And that on a point where she grew so angry that she destroit EVERYONE puplicly just bcs she wasn't treathed right.
That's why I HATE the Polin trope. Penelope HAD to become "PRETTY" to be worth off Colins love. Wich further knocks home the message: if you are big & just the way you are you are not worth to be loved. No, no you need to become better first and apeal to the male gaze. In this case penelope starting to wear Bridgerton blue.
Its would've been such a better story if she didn't change, she and Lord Deblin fell in love & THEN Penelope could've gone trough some styling changes to show her blooming in love. And then havind Colin seen how blind he was, but penelope having someone now who loves and apreciate her the way she is.
I hate how she begged for the Kiss, for him. It's the: the big fat ugly girl that no one wants, begs for the Boy to finally see her, but she needs to become pretty first!" Trope. Its pathetic, it's humiliating. The only thing that was missing is that the show have her loose weight to. 🙄
I get that they look cute togheter & that they wanted to have the "big women get price charming" but my god they did it in such an unworthy & pathetic way. It's a shame

I honestly never liked the Polin coupling, I honestly do think that Lord Debbling was better for her, he at least always respected her whereas Colin clearly cared for her but has certainly not always respected her. I agree with others that are saying the flip from "I would never court Penelope Featherington" to being madly in love with her was too quick, I maybe could've rooted for it if the arc had taken its time. I also think that Franchesca and Debbling would've been a good practical match, she would've had literally all the time in the world to focus on her music but I'm also happy with the direction they took it. I would like to see Debbling again in the future honestly and I predict if we do, he will probably end up with Cressida as a practical match which I think will be an interesting and funny dynamic.

  • @MelodyLee19
    @MelodyLee19 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I really just feel bad for Cressida lol. I know she’s supposed to be a bitch but like…I kinda get it. She’s got a horrifically abusive dad and a mom who’s been through years of physical abuse (and probably other kinds that we’re not aware of). Cressida was going to be married off to a man who’s like four times her age, she was clearly desperate and when an opportunity arose in the form of the idea that Lady Whistledown wouldn’t have any marriage prospects, she jumped at the chance to make sure she wouldn’t have to marry someone that she didn’t want to. And she didn’t really have anyone to talk to about this, because even though Eloise became her friend, Eloise didn’t care about Cressida and it seems like she just wanted to make Penelope jealous. Cressida is completely on her own emotionally, and while she did a lot of shitty things, I want her to be happy. My biggest hope for season four is that Cressida is dealing with her issues and has at least one genuine friend who cares about her and wants her to be happy.

Sigh. It had so much potential, but to me it failed the standards of the romance genre.
Colin wasn't believable as a rake (and PS. we were told Anthony & Simon were rakes, but never had to SEE it) so why make him one?
In previous seasons he was cutie 3rd brother who took courting seriously, and looked down on the rake lifestyles.
It would have been a nice switch-up to see the man be a virgin too, make them equals and it would make it more meaningful as the "first time" both of them have been seen as their whole, true selves.
I thought they would build on the erotic journalling and they would tease each other with love letters while they were engaged, nope, no emotional connection needed apparently! 😂 Premarital sex is also fine apparently, for **Colin Bridgerton**, established as a man who cares so much about honour!
It's before marriage in the book too, but it feels different, as it's after the secrets are out and amidst all the conflict, it's part of an affirmation that he loves and supports her no matter what.
We didn't get that cathartic happy ever after feeling at the end, not for me anyway. It was suffering for all of Part 2 😢
A good romance does need conflict and angst, but usually like 30% building a connection, 30% actually falling in love or a honeymoon phase, 30% big conflict that threatens to ruin everything, 10% happy ending. The balance was off, character development was really inconsistent, and it just didn't work! And I'm sad about it 😭

    • @CKeel88
      @CKeel88 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

We did see Anthony and Simon as rakes...Anthony had a whole brothel montage in the first episode of S2 , he also had that affair with Sienna in S1 and in S1 you saw Simon at brothels as well...Colin had 1 short moment at a brothel and the second time he chose not to participate, but everyone is all hating on him for this? Even Benedict was having threesomes in S1...so why are we sex shaming Colin in particular? This was also the norm at the time, after schooling, the men were encouraged to go to brothels and "sew their wild oats." Anthony even told Colin that he should have brought him to more brothels. If this was a woman we would totally be like YEAH get some, but if a man does we are already hating on him. Colin wasn't dating anyone, he is allowed to have sexual experiences. I also don't think Colin was a rake...he was just exploring his sexuality. The point of showing us the brothel scenes, is that he was not emotionally connecting to these women...his journals also show how he is trying to understand why he is so emotionally distant .... Colin's whole arc is him trying to fit in and protect himself from heartache that happened in prior seasons...but failing to find happiness in this new fake persona, but when he drops his walls and allows himself to be that sensitive individual...especially with Pen, who has never judged him for that sensitivity and has even encouraged it...he finds that after that kiss the emotional connection he has been YEARNING for was right there in front of him all along and that he realizes he has always had feelings for Pen, he just didn't realize that that is what those feelings were - love.
I don't understand how people aren't see this. It is either no one really paid attention to Colin in past seasons, or they choose to ignore what we know about him and see him as a totally different character. Also with so many people making fun of the actor because you don't find him attractive is disgusting...saying Colin gives them the ICK because he isn't as attractive as Anthony or Simon is gross. I understand people not liking Colin's fake charm...but that is the point...he is being fake in the first episode....but after he starts hanging out with Pen he is his normal sensitive and dorky self! Sorry for the rant, I just feel like so many people are overlooking Colin and aren't even paying attention...his story arc doesn't start in S3, it began in S1 and it is a really interesting arc actually.
To me this is the best season, I think Colin and Pen are the most interesting and layered characters in the show. S3 was always going to feel different because we had that relationship lead up in 2 prior seasons, so the balance of the season was always going to be different. Plus the whole LW drama was integral to the Polin relationship. And that cathartic HEA feeling really hit me in the Butterfly Ball with Pen coming forward as LW, Colin seeing Pen for who she truly is and being accepting and proud of her, seeing their last intimate moment with Pen being fulling confident in herself and being on top with Colin looking sooooo into it.....then seeing that flash forward with them being sooo happily in love and new parents, really made me tear up!
Also with people complaining the Polin didn't get as much screen time as Daphne/Simon or Kate/Anthony....each couple got around 20% of screentime. So those complaining that the show runner and the writers did Polin dirty...well they had the same amount of time as the prior couples...actually more since they had moments in S1 & S2.

Pen's excuses for writing about Colin were a bit gross. She was lashing out at him because she was angry, hurt and jealous, but as you said, that is the sort of conversation that should be kept between the two of them. The conversation they did have about it was great, but also soured by her initial response. She wants him the way she wants him, and didn't like that he changed, yet she's never once bothered to ask him why. Him believing that she lacks respect for him is completely understandable. I know she's a gossip, and a fundamental lack of consideration for other people's feelings and privacy is a given, but he was her friend for a long time. He always protected her, and saw her when nobody else did. What happened in 2x08 sucks, but one incident shouldn't negate all those years. Besides, Pen's intentional, pre-meditated, public attack on him was much worse than Colin's one-off, spur-of-the-moment comment to a limited number of people. All their conversations in S3 have been primarily focussed on her, largely because she let him believe he needed to earn back her friendship, when she'd already gotten her petty revenge. Her crush on him may have been one-sided in the first two seasons, but their friendship never was, until this season. Whether it's because the writers listened to all that toxic, entitled nonsense people kept saying about wanting to see Colin grovel, which is really gross, or for some other reason, that does not make for a healthy dynamic. I mean, she wanted him so badly for so long, but now that she has his love, she cares more about her ego? She'd really choose trashy gossip over the life she could have with him? Really?! Also, you were spot on about Eloise and Colin loyally keeping Pen's secrets, no matter how hurt and angry they were about them. Which is kind of ironic, since Penelope herself has little respect for anyone else's secrets.
