    Very good video and encouraging. However, choosing a research topic used to be one of the main huddles during graduate programs. However, the recent rise in graduate students with fewer lecturers has birthed a new form of delay in the world of academia. Lecturers, or thesis advisers or supervisors have become increasing occupied with other aspects and may have little time for their students. If you are looking for someone to review your dissertation/thesis in the fields of social sciences and humanities, then I am the right Reviewer for you.

    Hi, Dr, Saeed:
    I have rewatched the video of problem statement and background information for several times.
    Your structure of each part is very clear, while i think there are some overlap contents in the two parts.
    In the section of background information, i need to mention the general picture of my topic, summerize what have been done in this field and then narrow down to the key terms of my title and end up the research gaps.
    The middle part is the context of my research.
    In the section of problem statement, it includes what we already know, what we don't know (literature deficiencies), the study's significance and how will you do with the research.
    So the research gaps are mentioned in the two parts. Personally, I think the main idea of background information is to tell readers the big picture in the field and the problem statement is focused on the real problem and research gaps.
    My question is : How to smoothly transit and connect the two sections ? (

    • @saeedsharif
      @saeedsharif  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your message and the summary of the two videos. I completely understand that there may be some overlap between certain parts. It is true that there are sections that appear similar but serve different purposes. This difference is often seen between academic theses and research/consultancy reports in the industry. In the industry, we typically use approaches like MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) to ensure that the report is broken down into distinct components. However, in a thesis, there are many parts that may seem repetitive. For instance, you need to highlight the research gaps in different sections of your work. It's no wonder that a PhD thesis can reach lengths of 70,000 to 100,000 words!
      Nevertheless, different styles exist. For example, some theses may not have a separate "background of the study" section. When you write your background, follow my approach and ensure that you prepare the audience for the subsequent sections of your report or thesis. For the problem statement, adhere to the 4-section approach that I covered in the video. This is because many examiners and readers often read the problem statement independently. In many cases, the problem statement is the first section they read in your work. Therefore, write the problem statement in a way that can be understood without necessarily reading other parts of your work. Remember to keep it concise and focused. Avoid writing a 20-page problem statement! Based on my personal preference, a 5-page problem statement should suffice.

      @@saeedsharif Moring, Dr, Saeed:
      Thanks for your kind and detailed reply.
      You are right and I got your meaning, during the PD, the panels indeed focus on the problem statement. So your four steps of problem statement will show a complete picture of my research, without reading other sections.
      Thanks for your useful suggestion.

    • @saeedsharif
      @saeedsharif  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lydiazhang7390 As one of the loyal viewers of my videos, I would like to share something with you. This is an observation I've made from attending numerous proposal defenses and PhD viva presentations as a PhD program director, examiner, or supervisor. Almost always, students receive comments on their problem statement. Examiners typically read this section of the thesis and provide feedback. Moreover, based on my observation, in some cases, they may give comments merely for the sake of giving comments. It is rare to fully satisfy the examiners, and the problem statement is an area where you should anticipate receiving feedback. Therefore, there is no need to worry excessively about it. Revisit and revise your problem statement using my approach, and resubmit it.

      @@berhanuaebissa9955 Thank you for your comment. I'll create a sample later. In the meantime, please watch the other videos in this series. One of the reasons I didn't provide a sample in this video was that I didn't want to use my students' (especially my PhD students') work without their consent.
