    Traditionally, watercolor cakes are used by artist who prefer to paint "plein air" or while they are traveling. In this video, Sophia does the patch test for all the colors, followed by a painting to test out which box best suits a beginner artist.

      Sketchbook Joy you just need to make sure that the surface is protected from water. Or the painting can be protected in a glass frame. Please don’t use gesso. It will ruin the painting.

      You may begin with the Camel students watercolour tubes to get hang of the medium and understand how it works. You can then move on to artist watercolour tube for more serious work. However if you have already been painting and sketching for a while, just directly go for the artist grade set.

    Which watercolour cakes are best for me as a beginner...12 shades or 24 shades...and I am a sketch artist...and I want to learn with watercolour also.....so please suggest me...

    • @theabcworkshop
      @theabcworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome to hear that you want to try out watercolours to supplement your sketching. I would actually recommend going for 12 shades and experiment with building more colours with limited palette. The more colours you have on your palette as a beginner, the more chances of mixing up muddy colours. Begin with fewer colours and then slowly add on as you get more comfortable. All the best!!

  • @viraswaggy6480

    Hi again, I actually had another query. I did a little searching on TH-cam and I found out that if we put masking tape on our paper and then leave it to dry after we have finished painting, it will dry flat. so I tried to test it out, but as I don't have masking tape and I cannot go out in this covid 19 situation, what can I use instead of masking tape?

    • @theabcworkshop
      @theabcworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can actually just think of washi tapes or board clips as an alternate at the moment . Basically you need a tape that wouldn’t damage the paper when you peel it off. Some artist prefer to staple their wet paper down on wooden boards (these are again specialised staplers) but personally I think that is too cumbersome. Maybe you can order the masking tape on Amazon? But again, these are not mandatory items.

    • @viraswaggy6480
      @viraswaggy6480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      again, thanks a lot! actually most of the artists I see use masking tape for clean edges and stuff, so I thought it was mandatory. I'll probably buy a masking tape from amazon.

    • @kishorghadi1470
      @kishorghadi1470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can even use cello tape/ scotch tape you just have to first stick it on a cloth few times to lessen the stickiness and it will not tear up your paper 😉

    Hii. I am a 11 year old in india and I have JUST gotten into painting with watercolor and stuff. Since I am the literal DEFINITION of a beginner, I bought student watercolors. Are they all right for me to work with or should I switch to the artist ones? and I also got a 130 gsm sketchbook and after seeing all the stuff regarding the right paper for watercolor and trying the paper itself, I immediately regretted my decision. now, there are 50 sheets that I have to fill up so I can switch to a better sketchbook. Do you have any advice for me? BTW, I love your video

    • @theabcworkshop
      @theabcworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congratulations on beginning your artistic journey. Students paints are just fine to use as a beginner. 130gsm paper may buckle when you apply watery washes so although not the most ideal choice, are still usable. Go ahead and enjoy the process. It’s a long and fun journey ahead. 💕

      Zoya Kazi if you are a serious artist and want to learn the delicate art of watercolour painting, then go for the artist grade watercolour cake. But if you are just curious about the technique or price conscious then go for the 70 Rs box. Student grade has weaker pigment and chalkiness so will not give you the same vibrancy as artist grade. Nevertheless they are good enough if you are just a beginner. Hope this helps.
