    at my first job I was the only animator, so I had to build the graph and design the systems from anim point of view too.
    I have to say its much more empowering to be able to concieve whole systems/features.
    knowing where your animation will fit, its context in the game, helps improving the final quality of the animation too.

    uuu Love this vid topic Harvey, super informative. Love the part where you mentioned, you don't necessary need to learn the animation system. Understand and study them is adequate enough to be a animator! I got confused too when I first started as a gameplay animator.

      Glad you enjoyed it TM, and yeah I think the deeper you get into learning animation systems the more you end up becoming a full fledged Technical Animator which is something completely different. Equally fulfilling but different. Thanks for watching and keep in touch.

      I think this is a great idea! Cutting back and forth to elaborate on your point with great examples will definitely help visual learners, and make it more entertaining and timeless.

    I think in the future there will more opportunity for game animators to use our trained eyes to do something in the engine. Normally the designers won't give the feedback very detailed, I would hope to play with the system more and go back to the animations I did and polish them according to what I see.

      @@harveynewman Yeah, it is really challenging when I work in a professional position.
      And I have to try different workflows when I animate different things because of the time limit.
      And the project I worked on just got canceled yesterday, so yeah, it is a really memorable industry experience, haha.

    As a learning animator it would be a great thing to see if you can make a video about how can we show weight in animation (not how to lift heavy wight) but to make your character feel heavy and light. It would be great help for most of us.

    Great vid. What abt thinking of gameplay anim from game design view? Mayb a vid abt this? cuz some times we love to do and showcase our beautiful animation and then we ignore about responsiveness and the game feel, haha

    Hey harvey. It would be awesome if could break down a professional game animation in a maya scene. From in betweems break downs and key poses. Essentially want to know the professional workflow and what my graph editor should look like.

      Hey Andy...if you have a look at my very first video here on YT, you'll find my workflow there. It was a super quick piece, but it should give you a general ideal of how things look. Just as a heads up, the graph editor is incredibly difficult to master at first and it will take you quite a lot of time until you fully understand how to work with it. It's most definitely part of the journey.
