yes, they are the lighting supports for the bridge. definitely unique and different than anything I have seen before. try googling images of the new Bay Bridge at night to see how they look...
FWB, feeling is still fresh now it has been open a couple of weeks. Biked it with my daughter last Sat., just spectacular. The most respectful thing we can do with our wonderful bay, thanks.
lol, probably not. CHP doesn't really enforce the 50 MPH limit; it's set to keep people from driving much faster. They won't pay much attention to you, unless you're doing at least 60 MPH.
They did a restriping work not too long ago, including adding the new barriers with lighting on the Eastshore freeway. They basically restriped the lanes on the Bay Bridge because it was a wear and tear before I filmed it again. Nice ride! Forgot how new the bridge was back then. no surprise that the new bay bridge is 8 years old now!
I saw the overhead median lighting along I-80 back in August; definitely made for much better visibility. I'll probably be driving up from LA tomorrow to secure a new car in the Bay Area; will probably drive this in the evening.
Looks beautiful! I'm from New York City and I listen to the Sarah and Vinnie radio show podcast and they were talking about the new bridge. Said it would take 3 years to take down the old one. Thanks for the ride as usual.
lol...I wasn't trying to be first...just wanted to put up something that virtually everyone would like...at least that was the goal. Glad you enjoyed watching. :-)
Spectacular. As if San Francisco didn't have enough breathtaking bridges as it is. I'm wondering why they didn't settle on one kind of pavement for the whole thing, though. It would look even better. So, when will the old bridge be demolished?
So smooth and seamless. The landing is so gentle you didn't know you were off the bridge -if you drive legally- until you were by the plaza. The old bridge's position makes for a good view. Wide lanes and something makes it feel airy. Not sure why or why you don't get the same experience driving over 92. Just feels dam good driving on the bridge. The concrete-ness of the bridge kinda breaks the steel theme though. So glad I get to drive over it everyday (counter-commute) :D
It's a great bridge...I'm glad I'll be able to drive once or twice-a-week basis. I'll be testing out some DSLR cameras in the coming month, to see what I like best. In the mean time, I'll be doing a full length time-lapse (from Berkeley to San Francisco). Looking forward to entertaining people with the new video! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
So glad I stayed up for this, absolutely stunning! You just made history with a great video just over 24 hours after the opening, seriously good stuff!
I was waiting, 20 minutes before they opened it on 9/2/13. Was an amazing experience, seeing that bridge lit up for the first time! Been on the bridge 3 times since; I don't think the drive will ever become dull.
It's stunning! Really, you have to see it at night time. I've never encountered a more beautifully lit bridge in person (or seen one in pictures). I can't wait to showcase a night time video of it. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
Lucky! I'll "only" get to drive this bridge, once every few days. It's now my favorite piece of road infrastructure in the region! That "airiness" you're talking about is not just the number of lanes..10 of them, with full breakdown shoulders on both sides of each span, but also the fact that traffic in each direction is separated by dozens of feet. Unlike a lot of Caltrans-owned concrete roads, the pavement quality is quite smooth, which makes for even more enjoyable experience. Love it!
Being the first one to put out a quality video of the new bridge, I know you're going to get tons of hits with this! Submit this to as many media outlets, tourism bureaus, and governmental agencies as possible! It definitely deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. Btw, I loved the song choice! Empire of the Sun's latest album was the s**t!
Nice video but too much road and thus, not enough bridge. I tried doing it at night but my camera wouldn't stay focused. I'll have to look at the video again to make sure I didn't get too much road and not enough bridge myself before I try it again.
Thanks, dude! I'm sure the fans would *love* to see your version of the new bridge, which can only mean one thing...you need to make a trip out here and film it, too!
Glad you enjoyed watching! I agree; especially at night, it's a beautifully-lit bridge and allows for much better views of the San Francisco Bay than its predecessor.
That was referring to the road filming group, but even if it didn't, Brent's video was way better than anything else put onto YT relative to its release. The news media could never capture roads as good as the road filming community, and we do it voluntarily, for the love of the road.
Just heard their new album for the first time, 2 weeks ago. Love it! I've been trying to send the video to various agencies via E-mail and FB, but not a single one has responded. I may have to do it the old fashioned way; a phone call and in-person appointment.
Thanks! It's especially slick to drive at night, with all the lighting they installed on this bridge. It might be time to do a follow-up (and complete) video of the bridge.
The disassembling has already started! Will continue through 2015. A very elaborate process; they have to disassemble it in the EXACT opposite order that it was constructed.
Thanks, brotha! It's truly an amazing bridge...I can't wait to film this at night. Perhaps the most beautifully lit bridge in the United States, and I say that with a lot of confidence.
I think the alongside roads places scenics are so goods goods, so goods beautiful and so goods comfortable and so goods big, and so goods wides. I think the alongside roads places all mountains are so goods goods and so goods beautiful. I think the alongside roads places climates are so goods goods . I think the alongside roads places airs are so good to fresh airs. I think the alongside roads places environment are so goods comfortable.
nice video like always, I was wondering if you still have the old video of the bay bridge where you show the McArthur Maze interchange, it was a really nice video to watch!.
I can't wait to get out there at night, and do a jog along the entire eastern span, take pictures and just take it all in. By the way, have any new bike rental shops opened in Emeryville by the main entrance, to take advantage of the new pedestrian walkway along the bridge?
Hey man, it's my pleasure! I'm going to be experimenting with different DSLR cameras, in order to put together a bad ass night video of this bridge. It's now my favorite drive in the Bay Area.
Oh man, you have *no idea* how excited I was to drive this. It opened on Monday night, and I was probably one of the first 500 drivers to drive the new span. BEST-LIT bridge in the United States, bar-none! I'll have more videos of this bridge, coming up in the following weeks. Going to get a DSLR camera to film it at night.
You're welcome. :-) I had fun putting this together, over the course of 4 hours. REALLY looking forward to presenting a full night time video of this magnificent bridge.
This new bridge is fucking awesome! Excellent video Brent I really enjoyed this and nice song again. You're adding songs to my music list on iTunes! Sorry for the language...
Interstatekyle hi I love your videos. My favorite one was when you were Crossing the old Eastern Span. I wonder how its like crossing the Old Span?????
that is not quite true. the old main span of the bridge had one curve in it near the middle, while the new bridge still retains a curve but it is closer to the Treasure Island end. have a look at google maps satellite view.
He could have been referring to the S-Curve on the old span, which entailed abrupt traffic flow disruptions due to the lower speed. It could mean that the highway is a straightforward path with a constant speed and flow.
Yup...there are 6 lights on each pole...aimed so that there isn't a single dark spot on the entire bridge. It's gotta be the best-lit bridge in the country.
Sometimes I don't understand the deals that TH-cam and the recording labels create. So confusing to figure out their complex legalities, regarding using TH-cam-friendly music.
Dan Zunko : Not a dumb question at all. See what appears to be "holes" on those poles? They're actually LED light poles, equipped with 6 of the lights on each pole. At night time, the entire eastern span is beautifully lit up; it's actually the best-lighted bridge in California, and probably the entire west coast.
Why speed it up? It would be nice to see this bridge in it's original speed, especially since every second that you drive is over 30 days of work since this thing took 12 years to build
Very well made, even if is short and sweet. I really think that infrastructure, especially major components of it, should evoke a sense of awe and wonder. The old span was ugly and uninspired; the new one is beautiful and impressive. Engineering and design flaws are another story (that we're still learning about), but aesthetically, this bridge is prefect.
Thank you! I'm just getting around to reading some of the (new) comments left on this video. I agree...the old eastern span was quite obsolete, a bit drab and dull. It definitely served a great purpose, but didn't offer much in terms of aesthetics. The new bridge is a joy to drive over, especially at night. As for the engineering issues with the new span, I'm sure Caltrans will get them sorted out over time, or at least manage them. I'd still much rather be on this new bridge in an earthquake, over the old span...there are quite a number of well-informed articles, if you want to learn just how much the old span was at risk of crumbling in a large earthquake.
i had to stop the video a few times looking for the TI {treasure island} off ramp... its on the far left side of the fwy & its looks like a sharp left.. don't blow it! it'll take you a 1/2 hr to come around back to it! lol
Ha, yeah. It's probably time for me to refilm the Bay Bridge, since the Treasure Island exit is now on the right-hand side. If you want, feel free to check out my newest (and featured) video, showcasing the ride into Auckland, New Zealand. Cheers!
$7,000,000,000 final cost. Same suspension style could have been done with NON-FUNCTIONAL tower and wires for $700,000,000 by DELETING unneeded wide ship crossing space underneath that required costly construction to accommodate. Since ALL tall ships cross under the west span anyway, $6,300,000,000 was WASTED.
I would like to kindly disagree with you on this. Come check out the bridge at night, when both the tower and the entire skyway is brightly lit up. It's been getting rave reviews by all sorts of people.
Very nice!
Awesome! What are those spikes on the inside of roadway? They look lighting supports.
so beautiful. i like in the westbound drive you see the fog in the distance. i can't wait to see the night shots.
Very nice! Next time my family's in the Bay Area, we'll make a special detour to go on that new span!
Very cool video! Thanks! 😮😮😮😮
yes, they are the lighting supports for the bridge. definitely unique and different than anything I have seen before. try googling images of the new Bay Bridge at night to see how they look...
oww thanks i was expecting to see this jim thank you
I'm glad I got to see the new span thru you, Brent, until I get back up there to experience it for myself. The Bay Area will never be the same again.
FWB, feeling is still fresh now it has been open a couple of weeks. Biked it with my daughter last Sat., just spectacular. The most respectful thing we can do with our wonderful bay, thanks.
Monday night after 10 PM. It was quite a scene!
Great job on the video, Brent.
lol, probably not. CHP doesn't really enforce the 50 MPH limit; it's set to keep people from driving much faster. They won't pay much attention to you, unless you're doing at least 60 MPH.
Wow very very interesting this infrastructure ! But the old bridge is demolished ?
They did a restriping work not too long ago, including adding the new barriers with lighting on the Eastshore freeway. They basically restriped the lanes on the Bay Bridge because it was a wear and tear before I filmed it again. Nice ride! Forgot how new the bridge was back then. no surprise that the new bay bridge is 8 years old now!

Moving to SF from Massachusetts and planning to go via I-90 and I-90 so excited for the drive
Looks beautiful! I'm from New York City and I listen to the Sarah and Vinnie radio show podcast and they were talking about the new bridge. Said it would take 3 years to take down the old one. Thanks for the ride as usual.
Excellent, you are "first" forever for this great bridge!
Omg FreewayJim I love your vids so much that it convinced me to Subscribe. Just one quick question. Do you know a TH-cam named Barbiepoledancer???????
Awesome Brent. thanks for getting this up so quick! I'm sure you were in heaven driving that for the first time.
Thanks! That hulking old span is definitely going to provide a stark reminder of old vs. new for the next few years.
Thanks to everyone for watching and "liking" the video. Been awesome to read everyone's responses!
Best time-lapse driving video I've ever seen. This is great, thanks for the upload.
lol...I wasn't trying to be first...just wanted to put up something that virtually everyone would like...at least that was the goal. Glad you enjoyed watching. :-)
Thanks!!!
Love this! Thank you so much! I can't wait to head back to SF for this.
Spectacular. As if San Francisco didn't have enough breathtaking bridges as it is. I'm wondering why they didn't settle on one kind of pavement for the whole thing, though. It would look even better.
So, when will the old bridge be demolished?
really like the real time bit as well!
Very spectacular. The Bay area has another gem in it's grasp. Great Vid. Looking forward to the night version.
Great Preview. It looks beautiful, and the road is finally a straight line, without the old curves!
Glad you enjoyed! Perhaps a bit surprisingly, this video is already on the front page for "Bay Bridge" search inquires on TH-cam.
Fantastic ride, that's one beautiful bridge that the Bay Area can be proud of, thanks for the first class ride.
Thank you! Not sure why I didn't see this comment of yours until now...weird.

Great preview ride, looking forward to seeing your night ride over it.
So glad I stayed up for this, absolutely stunning! You just made history with a great video just over 24 hours after the opening, seriously good stuff!

Great work Brent. The bridge in this form offers a nice view of the past and the future.
Love it!
Looks like FreewayBrent is the winner, getting the new bridge YT roadgeek vided first.
Being the first one to put out a quality video of the new bridge, I know you're going to get tons of hits with this! Submit this to as many media outlets, tourism bureaus, and governmental agencies as possible! It definitely deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.
Btw, I loved the song choice! Empire of the Sun's latest album was the s**t!
damn that bridge looks AWESOME!! i think the new bay bridge might be the post-modern version of the golden gate!
Yay, you can see the view unobstructed by beams of steel :D
Love this, great look at a fantastic bridge. Thank you so much Brent for putting this up :)
Nice !!!
I love it, too! Can't wait to walk across the span this weekend. Will post a night time video of the bridge in the coming weeks.
Glad you enjoyed watching! I agree; especially at night, it's a beautifully-lit bridge and allows for much better views of the San Francisco Bay than its predecessor.
Driving it at night is a real treat.

No problem. You're welcome.
that's one impressive ride!
Sweet video and nice music...great as always :)
Just heard their new album for the first time, 2 weeks ago. Love it! I've been trying to send the video to various agencies via E-mail and FB, but not a single one has responded. I may have to do it the old fashioned way; a phone call and in-person appointment.
TOTALLY WORTH IT! Definitely must-see stuff.
All I have to say is that bridge was awesome. I drove across it the day the opened full time.
Wow, this bridge is sick!.. cool vid.
Thanks! It's especially slick to drive at night, with all the lighting they installed on this bridge. It might be time to do a follow-up (and complete) video of the bridge.
Can you please make a video of oakland bay bridge I -80 east?
I wish...not enough spare time these days to work on my hobby. 😐
5 ways, amazing ! Great video and bridge.
Cool bridge, I've been waiting most of my life for it to open. Still haven't driven on it though.
I think the alongside roads places scenics are so goods goods, so goods beautiful and so goods comfortable and so goods big, and so goods wides. I think the alongside roads places all mountains are so goods goods and so goods beautiful. I think the alongside roads places climates are so goods goods . So glad we finally have this, praise the LORD it is about time, fantastic video.
nice video like always, I was wondering if you still have the old video of the bay bridge where you show the McArthur Maze interchange, it was a really nice video to watch!.
when did it open?
September 2, 2013
I can't wait to get out there at night, and do a jog along the entire eastern span, take pictures and just take it all in. By the way, have any new bike rental shops opened in Emeryville by the main entrance, to take advantage of the new pedestrian walkway along the bridge?

Only 50mph speed limit?? You know darn well no one will do that.
You're welcome. :-) I had fun putting this together, over the course of 4 hours. REALLY looking forward to presenting a full night time video of this magnificent bridge.
U was in my neighborhood in 2010
This new bridge is fucking awesome! Excellent video Brent I really enjoyed this and nice song again. You're adding songs to my music list on iTunes! Sorry for the language...

I definitely used a few expletives, when I encountered it for the first time on Monday night. Best-lit bridge in the US, bar-none!
8/28/13 the bridge closed for working it (The eastern span)
Who says the US doesn't invest in its infrastructure?
Visit at night time. It looks like a cathedral..probably the best-lit bridge in the United States!
Yup...there are 6 lights on each pole...aimed so that there isn't a single dark spot on the entire bridge. It's gotta be the best-lit bridge in the country.

Probably a dumb question, but what are the hundreds of tall white poles in the median? They don't look like they have wires on them.
Dan Zunko : Not a dumb question at all. See what appears to be "holes" on those poles? They're actually LED light poles, equipped with 6 of the lights on each pole. They literally just think about to the bridge not the city
Thanks, man!

The bridge took 11 years to construct and you’re saying it’s a waste of 6.3 billion dollars? Unacceptable comment from you!
wow. that WAS expensive. It cost us like 3 weeks worth of Iraq war to build this.
I would like to kindly disagree with you on this. Come check out the bridge at night, when both the tower and the entire skyway is brightly lit up. It's been getting rave reviews by all sorts of people.
