  • Once a prodigiously gifted engineer of the renowned Engineers' Guild, Malakai Makaisson now serves as a Slayer, bearing the shame of a tumultuous and tragic past. As the creator of the Ironclad Unsinkable and the Airship Indestructible - which both malfunctioned with devastating results - he carries the weight of numerous Dwarfs' deaths on his shoulders, resulting in his ejection from the Engineers' Guild. In the wake of the tragedies, Makaisson took the Slayer Oath, though his days of tinkering and invention are not yet behind him. He continues his craft, building wonders such as the Spirit of Grungni and the infamous Goblin Hewer, in the hopes that one day his shame will be expunged in either triumph or glorious death.

People probably explained everything you asked in this and previous episodes, also suprised that people are more willing to hear live commentary, it seems I'm not alone on that, but yeah I'd say that's part of the reason people watch this - it's kind of a "reaction" to in-game situations, thought process and decision making, not "after the fact" analysis. Although if it's just a preparing batch of videos before going to vacation - completely understand, do what's better for you :)
Recently got back to Malakai campaign myself, continuing it (after starting it on release), afaik your summonable ship (later with respective building it can stay indefinitely in battle) can be destroyed as many times as you want, it doesn't affect your global map "horde" ship - you probably noticed that he just flies off when times run out or he gets "killed".
Another note - Malakai's location is not easy, he's almost completely surrounded by enemies, with a little exception to the south in face of Kislev, and then Empire and Karak Kadrin (and don't expect much help from them), but I'd say be careful with making alliance with minor Kislev factions like Ropsmenn Clan - in my playthrough I either get event for getting grudges against them or declaring war on them, also they tend to take settlement that you can use. In another playthrough I had defensive alliance with them, got involved in multiple wars (Azazel, Archaon, Wulfrik) and when someone (might be Astragoth) declared war on me - Ropsmenn just broken the alliance with me, so strongly recommend to either wipe them out or don't get involved with them at all :)

Well, like you said got complacent and just charged everyone including ranged units and cannon crew into battle, trying win by brute force even though you army wasn't built like that. You tend to get overwhelmed by all the units and information on the screen which is understandable and very common for a new player. There is a LOT to learn in this game. You just need to pay more attention what you are doing and what is happening. Know what your units are good at and position them well, identify dangerous enemy units, match against them correctly etc. That's what basically it is. I'm sure you already know that. The second battle was much better. Dwarfs are very defensive faction and you played to your strenghts. Stood back and let them come to you. I would probably have sent Gotrek and Felix to kill that enemy lord as soon as possible. They are very good at killing lords and heroes.

Hey man I just found your channel! It's good to see new people play this magnificent RTS :)
This piece of information might be useful to you, it helped me understand battles alot! Also you can apply this to any faction in the future, but I'll try to explain it the best way I can, and give you some examples for the dwarfs since you are playing them right now! (Also some people might've already told you this, but I hope it's still useful to you :D )
On the unit cards there are a ton of units named, infantry, artillery, missile specialst etc. etc.
However, in actuality there are 9 roles on the battlefield, and every unit falls into one, or multiple. (These are units that multirole in some shape or form)
    1.
    Defensive infantry:
The role of these units are to hold the line, protect other units. These units generally have decent health, better melee defence than melee attack and preferably charge defense vs large and shields. If you are bracing with these units (a little shield icon pops up over their unti card if they stay in place for 2-3 seconds) you can nullify the charges of cavalry and large units, meaning these units prefer staying in place, and holding key locations on the battlefield.
Example: Dwarf warriors and Longbeards (Preferably the shielded ones, the great weapon variants have somewhat of a different role on the battlefield)
    2.
    Offensive infantry:
The role of these units are to reach melee combat against preferable opponents as healthy as possible. These units generally have good health, better melee attack than melee defence, some kind of bonus on their melee attack (vs infanty or vs large), and preferably armor piercing. The special thing about these units, is that they excel in prolonged melee combat, the longer you leave them in a fight, the better they perform. They can rank up many kills if you make them fight the opponents they are meant to beat.
Example: Slayers, Giant Slayers and Doomseekers (They have different bonuses, therefore preferable opponents, but I'll try to explain this a bit later)
    3.
    Missile infantry/archers:
The role of these units are to deal consistent ranged damage from a decent range throughout the battle, while staying out of melee. These units generally have weak health, bad melee capabilities, but overall decent ammo, decent missile strength and good range. Also in general they don't have armour piercing. The special thing about these units, is that they fire in an arc, so you can hide them behind defensive infantry, so they can keep doing damage without needing to move them too much.
Example: Quarrellers. Rangers can also fill this role, although I'd say they can fill different roles on the battlefield aswell, so I wouldn't say they are ONLY archers (they are somewhat of a hybrid unit, you can ambush flanks with them, since they are hidden)
    4.
    Gunpowder infantry/guns:
The role of these units are to deal big ranged damage from a shorter range in a battle, while staying out of melee. These units generally have weak health, bad melee capabilities, but overall less ammo, great missile strenght and short range. Also in general they DO have armour piercing. The special thing about these units, is that they require line of sight, meaning you can't hide them behind defensive infantry (unless the target they are shooting of course, is bigger than the unit before them, meaning they can shoot over their allies heads). You DO need to move these units somewhat often, because you can't just park them behind your line and expect them to deal damage throughout the whole battle. They can however deal a ton of damage in a short amount of time, unlike archers for example.
Example: Thunderers, especially Thunderers with grudge-rakers and irondrakes. Yes, they fall into the same role, even though they have flamethrowers instead of guns, it's pretty interesting! If you think about it they function the same too, they require line of sight, and deal great ranged damage in a short range.
    5.
    Artillery:
The role of these units are to deal good damage over a big range in a battle, while ABSOLUTELY staying out of melee. These units generally have terrible health, awful melee capabiliies and terrible speed, but overall good ammo, good missile strenght and big range. The armour piercing varies. The special thing about these units is, that they have the best range in the game, so they can initiate a battle from far away, meaning you can force the enemy to come to you, instead of you needing to engage. Generally they don't require line of sight, and you can hide them behind defensive infantry. You don't need to move them too often either. Cannons are somewhat a special case for this one, because they do pretty much fill the role of artillery, but they do require line of sight. So they carry some gunpowder attributes with them.
Example: Grudge throwers and Cannons (I'd say they are a soft hybrid of artillery and gunpowder tough, since they need line of sight!)
    6.
    Cavalry:
The role of these units are to cover as much ground on the battlefield as possible and hit weakpoints of an army. They also need to abuse their good speed and they are overall a good reaction unit. These units generally have not so good health, (much) better melee attack than melee defence, great speed and good charge bonus. The important thing about these units is that they are actually bad in prolonged combat. Leave them in a fight for more than 8 seconds, they will suffer significant losses. You do need to move them around and abuse their charge bonus as much as possible, they are a high maintenance unit type. Also you need to pick their fights very carefully! They are best used to take out ranged units, you probably know this already tough!
Example: None, dwarfs don't have any unit that fills this role. You can force Gyrocopters to do this, but I'd say that's a last resort only, you are better off using their ammo as much as possible!
    7.
    skirmishers:
The role of these units are to, well, skirmish, and poke around enemy armies as much as possible. They are a unit that can abuse their speed aswell. These units generally have bad health, not so good melee capabilites, great speed and they also have ranged attacks with overall low ammo count and decent missile strength. The special trait of these units are, that they can fire whilst moving, and they have a circle shaped range instead of the usual V shape, meaning they can shoot backwards. This allows them to 'skirmish' meaning they can keep out of range because of their good speed, while being able to harass the enemy with missile attacks. They are perhaps one of the most demanding unit of attention, BUT if you turn on skirmish mode on them, they basically become auto piloted.
Example: Well... in the true skirmisher sense actually there's not a unit that fills this role in the roster, HOWEVER while Gyrocopters don't have a circle shaped range, meaning they can't fire backwards, they do have the rest of the attributes of the unit! So you can skirmish with them, basically they are a combination of skirmishers and gunpowders.
    8.
    Support:
The role of these units are to stay out of any kind of combat as much possible, while being near to friendly units. These are units that have abilities that can assist other units in some shape or form, or damage/debuff enemies. They need time to use their abilities, and they are generally fragile. Most mage heroes (on foot) fit this role, but there are some support units like Corpse Carts or Wardrums that fit this role aswell. All you need to do is keep track of their cooldowns and use their abilities according to the situation.
Example: Runelords and runesmiths. Engineers also fit this role (ammo replenishment), they do have a ranged attack tough, so they are somewhat of a hybrid aswell.
    9.
    Impact monster/formation breaker/damage cushion:
This is in itself somewhat of a multi role unit. These are units that have huge health, great mass, decent speed, good charge bonus, and are decent in prolonged melee combat. The role of these units are to engage the enemy preferably with other units, so they can draw missile fire, sparing other units from damage, and breaking through formations using their big mass. Since they have good melee stats and their mass is good, you can use them to trample through infantry very well, meaning you do need to move them around somewhat, BUT not as much as cavalry. They are alright in prolonged melee combat, but you are kind of using them wrong if you don't move them around lobbing around the mass and impactful charge attacks, and doing collision damage.
Example: None really, the dwarfs don't have a unit that fills this role, BUT the Thunderbarge has some attributes that are typical of this unit type, the big health pool. Meaning you CAN actually cushion a lot of damage, the enemy will have to spend a lot of resources to take a thunderbarge out!
    Last thing regarding the slayers:
Generally a unit is either anti-large,anti-infantry, armour piercing or a combination of these. Regular slayers are a good anti-large unit, meaning that you should use them primarily to deal damage to large combatants. Giant slayers are also armour piercing, so they can deal good damage even to armoured large opponents. Doomsekers are anti infantry however, so they are better suited to dealing damage to small targets.
Also this is the big difference between cannons and grudge throwers. Grudge throwers are better suited against infantry, since infantry has many entities with low hp. Cannons are better suited against larger opponents, because they have fewer entities, so they HP pool isn't as spread out as infantry.
Alright that was all, hopefully it was helpful to you in some shape or form, I tried to be as short as possible! Have fun with the game :)

Also also I enjoy the fact that once you start fighting chaos dwarfs you tried again to get a better victory. That's a very good gamer moment right there 👍
