      +Knightguard1 And? Is it somehow wrong to believe two different extremes are wrong? I don't like being outside during the winter when it gets below freezing, but I also find that scorching heat can be just as uncomfortable.Besides, don't try to say those are the only reasons why people didn't like these movies.

    One big difference between Luke and Rey, that I have not heard anyone mention, is that Luke couldn't wait to get off of his planet, whereas Rey didn't want to leave hers.

      Exactly! Luke and Rey are totally different characters and the only similarity between them is that they're from desert planets and they both have The Force. Luke is a farmboy who has loved with his aunt and uncle his whole life doing, well, farm work. He can't wait to get off his boring homeworks and find adventure. Rey on the other hand has no one. She has lived a rough life fending for herself since day one. She's no bright eyed yuppie kid like Luke, she knows how things go down in the wilds and in the backdoors of trading posts. She's been scavenging and fighting her whole life just waiting for the day the parents she never knew come home.

      Also Rey can kinda do just about anything the plot needs her to and was immediately able to powerfully manifest the Force and beat the more "experienced" villains ass. Plus her personality was she's.... spunky?
      I liked the Force Awakens and it made steps in the right direction, but it felt shallow and safe. Hopefully the next movie steps it up a notch now that things are established.

      +(Permanent Placeholder) I think it could have been a good thing if used properly sadly it was poorly used it's like it doesn't even matter so in the movie we have this giant planet that can destroy entire star systems and nobody seems to give a fuck!! seriously the charcters are basically like oh look another giant ball that can destroy planets lets go destroy it again I think Ep. VII should have just focused on the charcters and the universe in general then maybe intrudce Starkiller base in the sequels and make it look like a serious threat

      Elias Gonzalez so??? Just because you find differences when you look for them, doesn't mean it's okay to do it. TFA overdid it, they copied most of ANH's main plot points. They did change a few things here and there but mostly they did the same movie. I'm not going to bother counting all of them because it'd take a lot of time, but they had so many similarities. It's not okay. It had some new elements, but it was really lazy and unoriginal.

    The plot points were way too similar. Abram's really shit the bed with it.
    We shouldn't be asking for a soft reboot, but a good SEQUEL. And this movie would have been without Starkiller Base and too many similarities. The characters could have carried any plot they made which they did.
    So yeah, I'm very annoyed at the similarities. It should not have been that way at all. I wanted the OT feeling, not the entire plot. I am hoping Episode 8 takes a sharp turn and isn't a rehash of TESB

  • @Kanyethegoat365
    @Kanyethegoat365 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    The problem with 7 for me was the lack of creativity. Sure it was cool to have star wars back, but the force awakens lacked anything "new" to the franchise. Everything had already been done before. Sure you can hate on the prequels, but at least Lucas had creativity and added new and interesting things (pod racing, geonosis)

    Mos Eisley and Maz’s castle are definitely physically and structurally similar, but there’s a different emotional context. In 4 the scene ends on a high note for our heroes because they’ve gained new allies who know how to handle themselves, in 7 it ends on a low note with our heroes getting split up. Plus Rey has a vision from Anakin’s lightsaber which is unlike anything ever seen in Star Wars, so I think the two scenes each work in their own ways. Similar yes, but it’s an homage for a reason. TFA is an homage to the whole OT

    My biggest gripe with the movie was Starkiller Base. The thing that annoyed me the most about it, was that they amped it up. I feel like having another Death Star could have been okay if it had been amped down, but they amped it up instead to a ridiculous scale. Having it survive for more than one movie would have also made it less annoying, but I suppose they wanted to mirror ANH and also have some fireworks at the end of the movie. None of the other similarities to other Star Wars movies bothered me at all.

    • @WetPuddle
      @WetPuddle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BlameItOnGreg Yeah Starkiller base is retarded. I was hoping till the last second that it wont get destroyed completely, but I was dissapointed :(
      Not to mention it makes zero sense in the Star Wars universe, I mean seriously, hyperspace superlasers that split up and target every single moon and planet!?? What the fuck?

    • @fuckenps3
      @fuckenps3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you'd have people complaining about how underwhelming and non-threatening it was, if it were "amped down".
      The fact that it was just "a bigger one" was at-least a clever nod to the audience.

    The Phantom Menace is also pretty simillar to A New Hope: A boy is rescued from a desert planet, a queen/princess is kidnapped and then rescued, space battle that destroys a huge round spaceship, the wise old master dies, there's a celebration at the end...
    I think The Force Awakens actually turns this formula around a little in some aspects, like the characters.

      +Henbush8 ALL Abrams had to do was work with Lucas and work out the story arc and finer details of the whole thing and then say, "Great! Thanks! See you at the premiere!", go finish the final draft of the script and shoot the movie. But obviously he and/or Disney wanted to make glorified fan-fic instead. : P

    • @Henbush8
      @Henbush8 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ComeOnIsSuchAJoy It was likely Disney. It was Disneys fault that there was another death star because they wanted the merchendising.

    • @RobNevico
      @RobNevico 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ComeOnIsSuchAJoy That actually DID happen. Lucas had a bunch of ideas for VII-IX that he passed on to Disney. Except instead of polishing up Lucas' vision, everyone involved thought it was terrible (the rumors, so don't take this as fact, was that it was supposed to be similar to the prequels to make it come full circle; re-establishing the Republic and Senate, having a reverse family arc where one of the offspring goes dark but is brought back, new silly aliens, etc. Basically, The Phantom Menace meets ROTJ). Then they brought in a new writer who also did a terrible job, but at least created a basic foundation to work on. Abrams and Kasdan took the script and decided to take these new ideas, expanded on them and worked them tangibly around a soft reboot to give fans what they wanted, and it worked. But the main point is that no one involved liked Lucas's idea for the next trilogy so they decided to go another way, which speaks volumes.

    • @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy
      @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Nevico (NOTE: this post assumes everything you say is true) So, again, basically they preferred mediocre fan-fic wrapped in an extensive Episode IV rehash with a Mary Sue lead, a male lead only there to make said Mary Sue look even better, a massive disconnect to the previous movie in the series, new developments to the returning OT characters that didn't ring true given their OT arcs, contradictions to various SW lore established by Lucas himself, and an excess of winks to the OT that were so painfully self-aware the characters might as well have broken the fourth wall and said to us viewers, "Hey, remember this?" : P
      I find it hard to believe Michael Arndt - writer of "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Toy Story 3" - did a 'terrible' job. I also recall Lucas' own biographer reading his VII-IX outlines back in the day and thinking they were brilliant -- even better than I-III or X-XII (yes, there's apparently a fourth trilogy as well). Let's face it: everyone involved in the movie's upper hierarchy was sooooo petrified of having a repeat of the prequel drama that they completely hedged all their bets; they played it completely and utterly safe... because, of course, it's easier -- and more financially rewarding. [roll eyes] Working directly WITH Lucas through the story arc **might've** actually resolved a lot of their concerns.
      And, again, Lucas has ALWAYS maintained these are *kids'* movies. I'm sorry to all my fellow Gen-Xers, but WE'RE NO LONGER THE TARGET AUDIENCE of these movies. It's not my fault the MPAA has gotten so ridiculously conservative over the last 25 years (I still think both this and ROTS would've easily gotten PG ratings - albeit hard PGs - back in the late '80s -- hell, ANH and TESB would also probably be PG-13 today). : P 'Silly' aliens? Frankly, a lot of the new aliens/creatures in this movie didn't look 'Star Wars-y' at all to me; Unkar Plutt, the rathtars, that alien on whose lap the First Order spy was sitting in Maz's castle, and that giant pig snout creature on Jakku all immediately spring to mind. DUNE or STARGATE, maybe, but *not* SW. And not a **single** 'classic' SW alien anywhere??? No Rodians, or Twi'leks, or Aqualishes, or Grans, etc.? (I'm not counting the 3 returning OT heroes that fit this bill - Chewie the Wookiee, Admiral Ackbar the Mon Calamari, and Nien Nunb the Sullustan.)
      As I've heard someone say on one of these comment sections, with the prequels, Lucas at least got the story right; it was nearly every other aspect on which he dropped the ball... whereas, here, Abrams and Disney did the *exact opposite*. And, of course, unfortunately for them, story is THE most important thing about SW, if you ask me. But, alas, SW has apparently also now fallen into that same sort of *"We want the SAME THING!! Only DIFFERENT!!!"* mentality that moviegoers now hold for virtually all movie franchises. There's no profit in originality anymore. : P

      +Magic Patagonia The Phantom Menace had similarities to A New Hope to. There's a person who lives on a desert planet that has a very unimportant life and finds some people that completely change their lives, at first one of the good guys doesn't like the main character, but then becomes good friends with them, then their original mentor gets killed in a lightsaber battle and then they destroy the bad guy's base, and then they party about the fact they defeated the bad guys.

  • @martinzyka6432

    It's very simple. If this is the only movie I get for another 10 or 20 years, I would be pissed that they really didn't do anything new or fresh, that they played it safe.
    But there is a Star Wars movie in post-production, another in production, another in pre-production, and another 2 announced, and probably many many more in the pipeline, so I don't really care. In fact I liked that everything was so familiar.

  • @VicHD
    @VicHD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Episodes I-III tried too hard to be it's own story that most of its charm was lost for not being similar to Ep. IV-VI.
    Episode VII was made to introduce new characters while at the same time keeping the story and plot elements very familiar.
    I also see the similarities compared to A New Hope, but I'm not really bothered by it that much. To me it felt like an enhanced remake of the mythos with elements of IV and V.

    • @Arek15Arek
      @Arek15Arek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Episode I-III didn't fail just because it was different. It failed because how they executed it, all these unnecacery parts like well, the whole first episode and too much focusing on the love story of episode 2 with terrible acting, too much of CGI and Jar Jar... The clone wars TV show, especially since the beginning of the third season has improved on all of this, the story is way different from the OT but people loved it much more than Rebels ever will be.
      The overall story is amazing if you think about it and the storylines have are and have much more potential to be really interesting and amazing than those from the OT era. It's not the story that failed but the execution.

      +Arek15Arek thank you! I completely agree. It's the execution of the prequels that people hate. From bad dialogue, acting, and pacing, to way to much CGI in episodes 2&3. Clone wars proves that people don't care that the prequels aren't like the OT.

The movie is a mess. The only good thing about it are visuals and they failed even in this and brought another stupid looking CGI characters and monsters. It was by far the worst SW movie.

    I just don't get this kind of fans of Star Wars and this kind of opinions. So, in the prequels they created new worlds, new planets, new characters, new ideas, new ways to expand the SW universe and you hated. And now, they do exactly the same but with differences and you love it. I liked TFA but I think they could've created and imagined like EVERYTHING? It looks like the kind of plot of a 10 fanboy dream. I just don't get it, sincerely.

      +HelloGreedo I would argue that TFA falls under the category of dull and boring because it is so similar to Episode IV. The amount of callbacks were a barrier to enjoying the film. I normally wouldn't mind the references if the film had good writing, but it has terrible writing. Here are a few examples: Why does Finn defect out of nowhere? Why does Rey keep BB-8 when she is desperate for food? Why does Kylo Ren have the light side call him when he has no issue killing people and ordering a village to be slaughtered? Why does Rey master so many force abilities within such a short amount of time? I could go on...

    Heck, I respect J. J Abrams for not using shoving Luke into the fore front, that takes guts. If I had the chance to direct it, the new characters would have been overshadowed by the old. But J. J didn't do that, he set them up perfectly in a similar story but inhabited by different and new characters. So when Episode VIII comes, Luke won't totally overshadow Rey, we'll be interested to see the both of them.

    I think you're putting too much stock in the "Someone will always complain" argument. That argument assumes either people who are complaining are too disagreeable to like any version of the film or some people wouldn't have liked a version of the movie that doesn't exist.
    When I heard there was a new Star Wars movie, I just wanted a NEW Star Wars movie. What's the point waiting 10 years for a movie I'v basically already seen? What's the point of having a story 30 years after Jedi if the rebels/empire dynamic hasn't changed? Were Mon Mothma and the Republic sitting on their hands for 30 years? Why is there still an Empire? Doesn't this make the celebration at the end of Jedi a moot point if the Empire is still around? It was that and Starkiller Base that broke it for me. Star Wars is almost 40 years old, since then we've had movies, novels, comics, video games, t.v. series, and most of that is now non-canonical. And yet with the wealth of lore and a clean slate, I end up watching a movie that's decidedly a copy of the original trilogy. You may say this franchise needed a soft reboot, I think it needed a hard break. Star Wars needs to step away from the shadow of the original trilogy, away from the Lucas era, and be something distinctly different.

  • @JaysPlace20
    @JaysPlace20 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Honestly, I could write a research paper on the sheer number of differences between the two movies. Abrams himself confirmed that the similarities were intentional homages meant to pay tribute to what came before and reintroduce the saga to a new generation. When you think about it, however, the similarities that were there, though obvious, were also pretty vague. Yeah, Tatooine and Jakku are both desert planets; the Cantina and Maz's temple both serve as bars; R2-D2 and BB-8 are both droids given missions to deliver information to groups of freedom fighters. Does that mean they're ripping the original off? No. Why? Because the Star Wars universe encompasses an entire galaxy worth of systems. Nobody should be surprised that there's more than one desert planet, or that there's more than one bar. Hell, we saw a bar in Episode II on Coruscant. That planet could've had countless bars. Sure, they facilitated vaguely similar purposes, but the way things went down in each were pretty different overall. I also seriously doubt R2 was the first droid the Rebels entrusted with valuable information, and I'm sure BB-8 won't be the last droid the Resistance trusts to perform a similar task. It's like HelloGreedo stated, R2 was carrying the technical readouts to the Death Star while BB-8 was carrying the missing piece of the map to locate Luke. Delivering the Death Star plans was the main objective throughout the majority of A New Hope. Delivering the map to Luke was a background goal which served as a mcguffin. It was a side mission, but not the main objective. A lot of similar plot points between the two aren't even original to Star Wars. There have been countless other stories utilizing similar plot points both before and since. Does that mean they're ripping each other off? Of course not. It's just how their stories were structured. The similarities in no way bother me, and I certainly don't see them as a negative. J.J. and crew showed their respect for the original and paved the way for the adventures to come. Still my favorite film of last year and a worthy addition to my favorite film series.

    A quick comment here:
    One thing I wanted different, or new, out of Sequel Trilogy was a different villain; someone who could possibly be even better than Vader was. I think Kylo Ren filled this desire perfectly. One thing that had set him apart from Vader was, for one his lashing out with his lightsaber in rage or anger instead of just exclusively force choking out an officer like we've seen Vader do. I hope that he keeps that trait in the following movies. If he had just exclusively force choked out officers, people would be bitching "OHHH, HE'S JUST ANOTHER VADER RIPOFF."

  • @silenceofthehills

    I think that the physical similarities between the Death Star and Starkiller base are the only thing to gripe about considering the first order is a continuation of the Empire, which was trying to achieve total control over the galaxy and went to the lengths of building the Death Star because obviously it was crucial to their plans. As stated, fear will keep the systems in line, fear of the Death Star. It was made to decrease rebellion using fear of total planetary destruction, wiping out whole governing systems.
    With the total annihilation of a giant governing mega force in 7, it is ridiculous no one understands this and how crucial A Death Star is in taking completely over like that. It's like dropping a million nukes on an entire continent and ending any and all potential war against you, and it was the point Lucas wanted to get across, who was inspired by tyrannical powers like the Nazi party to make the Empire in the first place. It's one of the reasons the series is even called Star Wars in the first place.
    I could agree with complaints about its destruction happening in the first film maybe, as maybe they should have waited till 8 to figure this all out with Luke, inverting the order of titles with the mega weapon in it, especially if they plan to rebuild it in 8 or 9. However, maybe they wanted to get it out of the way and do something else for 8 and 9.

  • @MestariDuff

    You keep telling that the similarities "don't bother" you. And that bothers me. That's not a valid point you're making. You're just saying that you are totally fine with the fact that they didn't take any risks. You're saying that the characters are what's important, but even the characters are pretty much the same. You keep saying that Rey is relatable. Yeah, that's because she's Luke. A character with great potential that is living on a desert planet until an event outside of his control sends him in space in the Millenium Falcon. If you're going to argue that "characters drive story", fine. But they are the same characters and they are doing the same things they did in A New Hope. So the end result is that it's the same story. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but Episode VIII can't be great if it's a "soft reboot" of Empire. If you don't take risks, then these movies will fall into the abysses of cinema history in ten years tops.

      You are wrong my friend. Rey and Luke are COMPLETELY different characters.
      Rey is competent, and kind of street smart, but she is also vulnerable and scared. She is also not too selfish and she is very compassionate. She is very hopeful and she's a massive enthusiast of myths and legends about Han Solo or Luke Skywalker. Despite living a trashy lifestyle, she wants to go back to that life as she has faith her family will return. She dreams of adventure but never wants to actually go on one herself.
      Luke on the other hand is quite a sheltered, whiny teenager, who doesn't really start off with much hope and believes his uncle controls his life. Despite living a decent lifestyle, he is unhappy with it. He is eager for adventure, and tries to seize every chance he gets at it. He can't wait for his life to change. He isn't a particularly caring person, but he soon learns to care for his friends. He is also not particularly vulnerable or afraid at times, or he's never too nervous.

    The only time during the movie where i had noticed the similarities between ANH and TFA was when they were going to destroy starkiller base, and more specifically the trench run. I remember debating with my friends whether or not it would have been more interesting if the rebels had actually lost instead of destroying it. It would have been like the battle of Endor, but the trap had actually worked and the majority of the New Republic fleet had been destroyed. It would have made the First Order look more terrifying than the previous enemy and set up the rise of a new threat more dramatic.

    They really aren't that similar. There are definitely tons of call backs, but all the similarities are so small, besides death star 3, which was the only bad thing. Even like the trench run. In a new hope the trench run was an integral part of the ending, they used it as cover because it was the only way to get to where they needed to go, otherwise they would've had no chance. In TFA, they used a trench on the ground for a couple seconds as a minor tactical advantage. All the similarities are like that. The most similar thing about Luke's and Reys upbringing was sand. Luke was a farmer who lived a pretty comfortable life with with his aunt and uncle. Rey spent all her time scavenging just to stay alive. Luke had every intention to get off the planet, and Rey wanted to stay there, and even wanted to go back after she left. There are a lot of similarities, small ones. The point was to give fans something really familiar while at the same time something completely new, and i think it succeeded quite well. Saying it's just a rehash of a new hope is the dumbest, most ignorant thing you could say about it.

    It's a simple formula: include tons of similarities in order to emphasize the differences. The point is showing how far the series has come from its origins. It's meant to recapture the old feel of Star Wars while simultaneously giving it a new direction for fans to be excited for.
    It's not bad, it's a strategy for a very specific effect. They wanted that duality, and I think they did it great.

    A lot of elements of the plot are kind of the same, but the real meat of the content is how they spin everything. Both Rey and Luke are former children abandoned by their parents, but the difference between the two is that while Luke's story was about learning of his parents and their legacy, his arc isn't all about parental abandonment. Vader never shapes Luke into who he is, Luke is defined by how his aunt and uncle raised him, and his relationships with his friends. Luke is not defined by his being abandoned by his parents.
    Rey, however, is defined by parental abandonment. The reason she's living on Jakku by herself in the first place is because she was abandoned as a child. Without wishing to spoil anything, a lot of her story actually revolves around finding replacements for her parents (specifically father figures). Luke had a normal life because he already had these things, but Rey did not.
    I can't wait to see what they do here in the second movie.

  • @DevinQuigleyArt

    Before seeing the movie, my initial thought about Jakku was that it would be a scrapyard planet, based off of the descriptions. It would've been cool to see people just scrambling across huge mountains made by passing ships dumping their own junk, or something like that. True, it would've required a lot of CG, but still!

    I liked the film personally. I do feel Starkiller Base could have been handled differently, or maybe not at all. The beginning was similar to IV, this is good, a familiar yet new scene for old fans. The middle had similarities to the old films, but enough new that it was a different story. If they hadn't of added Star killer base, I think people would have reacted better. Start the film similar then graduate to new and original material. Starkiller just went back to old too quick. But I enjoyed it anyway.

    I agree that episode IV and episode VII are really similar, it's actually pretty close to a scene for scene remake:
    R2D2-BB8
    Hurried escape from the planet on the Millennium Falcon
    Trash compactor monster-Rathtars
    Bar scenes
    Destruction of Alderaan-destruction of Hosnian system
    Meeting with rebels about destroying death star- meeting with resistance about destroying starkiller base
    Enemy prepares to fire on rebels-enemy prepares to fire on resistance
    Interrogation of Leia-interrogation of Rey
    Battle between Darth Vader and Obi-wan-Confrontation between Kylo Ren and Han Solo
    Some scenes are out of order but there are way too many for it to pass unnoticed. I did notice all this while watching the movie, but like Greedo I don't think it's a problem. It was done exceedingly well, the characters were new and interesting, and you could feel the love of the Star Wars universe in each scene.
    I've thought of it more as an homage to the first movie than simply copying it. More than anything, you can tell this was all very much intentional. It wasn't just to rip off episode IV and make a quick buck. It was to rekindle what we loved in Star Wars.

    I overall really enjoyed Force Awakens. Was Force Awakens perfect? No. Did it recycle too much from a New Hope. Yes. Was it enjoyable and fun? Yes. I'm seeing so much hate for this movie in the comment section by angry ''fanboys'' and I honestly don't get it. Compared to the garbage boring, underwhelming flat Prequels. This is everything Star Wars is and needs to be. A fun adventurous space fantasy film with likable characters. Not a film about the taxation of trade routes, flat boring lifeless characters or boring space politics. Honestly speaking the only good thing to actually come out of the Prequels were their musical scores, and the Clone Wars TV show. I am looking forward to seeing what director Rian Johnson brings to the table in Episode VIII and I get the feeling he'll bring more originality to the next one.

    I don't get the complaint about Maz. You can't emote with puppets effectively. And it's not even like they had her full CG rendered and the actors were talking to a tennis ball on a stick. No. There was a real person there. Looking into the other actors eyes. And yeah she probably could've looked a a bit better but she served her purpose. And everyone has to admit She IS an interesting and important character.

    I actually really enjoy the prequels and am not afraid to say it. I don't say shit to people that disagree because I respect their opinions, something they never do. So if you like the Star Wars prequels, be honest about it and ignore the trolls and bullies that masturbate when they make people kill themselves on the internet. Fuck them, there's plenty of us out there that watched the prequels as kids and enjoyed them as much as the original trilogy. Looking back at them, I can see the flaws, but still appreciate a lot of good aspects like the scenery, introduction of planets(Naboo was fucking beautiful), I loved the way everything looked, from the costumes to the villains like Jango Fett, Darth Maul and General Greivous. Qui-Gon Jin was an amazing fucking jedi, and Obi-Wan was perfect. Jar-Jar actually makes me laugh a few times, he's mostly retarded, but I liked when he shocked himself in the face and jammed his hand and couldnt talk right. And I think the racist shit was taken WAY out of proportion, Star wars has introduced thousands of different species, if one of them wants to be ghetto then so be it. And Jar Jar wasn't even that racist, nor were the gungans.

  • @Gragthor

    I think the biggest gripe I have is that they made it a huge point that the movie was going to ignore the Expanded Universe. That led me to believe that the movie was going to tell its own original story, and I was excited for that. Instead, J.J. played it safe and redressed Episode IV with prettier colors. In the beginning, I was super excited for this movie. I watched all the trailers, I followed all the news, and then I got tickets for opening night and saw it with a bunch of friends. Never have I experienced such a sharp descent from excitement to utter disappointment. The only other thing that comes close to being this disappointing is Mighty No. 9.
    So, from one internet stranger to another, I'm glad you enjoyed the film. I just wish there was something about it I could enjoy.

    It's funny. The Prequels were frowned at because they were not Star Warsy enough, yet, TFA gets frowned because it's too Star Warsy.

    • @Nastranai
      @Nastranai 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +hawkeye pierce It's not the fact that it's Star Wars-y. It's the fact that essentially the plot boils down to a near carbon copy of A New Hope. Strange robot crash lands on planet carrying vital data, is found by a farmer/scavenger (aka the 'hero') longing for a different life but who is tied down by family ties, hero is forced to leave by intervention of evil galactic superpower and start their adventure, hero finds the scoundrel who provides transport and acts as a slightly more world wise sidekick, hero is rescued by the mentor who reveals to them the importance of the data they've found and begins to train the hero, mentor leads hero into a confrontation with the superpower and then dies in the process, hero pledges themselves to the Rebel Alliance, finds hidden inner Force power and uses it to save the day, superpower's superweapon is destroyed, but not before taking out a token target that's only meant to showcase how evil they are...
      Force Awakens is literally just a rehashing of A New Hope with different faces taking on the older archetypal roles we were introduced to in ANH, with the only difference being that those archetypes can be occupied by single or multiple characters and those roles can be swapped between during the movie. Take Finn, for example. The man swaps between the hero and scoundrel roles throughout the movie, as well as becoming the princess at the end, sitting by helplessly while the hero fights to save them from the superpower.
      Am I saying that it's a bad thing? No, I quite liked the movie. However, I found myself disappointed when I realized that after a certain point I could guess what was going to happen because I'd seen ANH and knew what the end results for those character archetypes would be. I knew Han would die because I'd seen Obi-Wan die, and I knew that it would be the trigger for the hero to finally put their all into the fight against the superpower. I would have liked to have seen the plot break from tradition in this manner, to have thrown in some unexpected twists and turns, perhaps even to veer off from the older plot entirely in order to create new opportunities for fresh stories.
      At the same time though, I can understand why they did it. The prequels, whilst initially successful (and rather good, if you ask me, at least from the perspective of someone who grew up watching them) left a VERY sour taste in the SW fan base's mouth. Couple this with the Disney takeover, and you have a lot of hardcore Star Wars fans very worried about where the franchise would go and whether they would continue to support it. So, to reassure them and to win them over, whilst at the same time introducing SW to a new generation, they decided to do the soft reboot in order to ease fans back into things. Do I wish it had been a different story, a fresh plot? Of course I do. But I'm happy with what I got. Besides, this film made Stormtroopers both funny and fearsome once more. And it gave us TR-8R. Who can hate a film that does that?

    My big problem with TFA is that the movie felt like they were shoving star wars in my face to tug at my heartstrings, not because they wanted to make a great movie.
    -Need a sand planet? Gotchu covered
    -Need a Foresty planet with some ancient temple base? Gotchu covered
    -Need a Cantina scene where we show off some Aliens? Gotchu covered
    - Need a Giant death orb space station? Gotchu covered
    A lot of it felt a little too forced from my perspective
    I woulda preferred them going forward and creating new interesting worlds and environments without having to rely on the original films so heavily.

      We need to see the bigger picture. For the first time in a while, we see a star wars movie, but we can't just pop in the next disc or rent the next one to see how the characters develop.
