Well, in all fairness, technically "may I?" is the proper grammatically correct way of saying that sentence. Simply, because the meaning of "can" is your ability to do something, and "may" is used to ask permission to do something. Some teachers just want you to remember the rules of grammer. It just seems bad, because as generations go on, the youth ignore grammer rules on a daily basis (sadly, that includes punctuation). Also, note that "may" and "can" are both 3 letter words, so it's really not like you are pronouncing more syllables than necessary. In all, if children are the future, teachers want a future that respects grammer.

The other day, my friend started laughing at our substitute teacher, the teacher told her to stand up and say why she laughed. My friend said she heard a noise. Then the teacher was like I don't believe u. But then my other friend was like " I also heard the noise" and the whole class agreed. Then I told the teacher how it's not fair she only pointed at my friend cause other people were laughing. But anyways the class lied to the teacher together and that's all that mattered.

Yet you marked me tardy or absent.” Guess what the teacher say instead of apology. “ maybe you be more awake when I did my attendance.” Or “ you should raise your voice even more.” Or the worse “ too late. Sit down.” And I said “I’m following the school bell system which you have engraved in my mind, therefore, I will leave when that system is put in action. If you wish to change said system, you can take that up with the board of education.” Then I walked out the door, and everyone else started packing up again. Well, in all fairness, technically "may I?" is the proper grammatically correct way of saying that sentence. Simply, because the meaning of "can" is your ability to do something, and "may" is used to ask permission to do something. Some teachers just want you to remember the rules of grammer. It just seems bad, because as generations go on, the youth ignore grammer rules on a daily basis (sadly, that includes punctuation). Also, note that "may" and "can" are both 3 letter words, so it's really not like you are pronouncing more syllables than necessary. In all, if children are the future, teachers want a future that respects grammer.
