  • In our brand new DEEP series we interview fascinating people who have lived unique lives. In this episode we have talked to former Gurkha soldier, double above-knee amputee and record-breaking mountaineer Hari Budha Magar MBE who told us about his childhood in Nepal, how he joined British Army, lost both legs in Afghanistan and what helped him to move forward from that injury and summit Everest.
Thanks to Hari for taking part! You can support his crowdfunder: www.crowdfunde... and follow his journey: / hari_budha_magar

For a few years I lived on army camps. Once a month in one particular camp, Gurkha”s cooked huge vats of curry for us. The food was amazing, but even better were the Gurkhas. They were great guys. Thank you for fighting alongside the British, your service is respected across the country.

Hari's story is truly inspirational. Overcoming trauma and depression following his war injury is tough enough. Fighting the rules, going to court for the right to climb a mountain is again a big big challenge. That mountain being Everest makes it utterly phenomenal.

I shared a tent with 2 Gurkhas at the shooting championships at Bisley in the early nineties - they're the most genuine and humble people you're ever likely to meet. This guy's achievement is mind blowing. Great interview.

Hiya I just wanted to say Hari seems like such an honorable humble man - coming from difficult beginnings yet has achieved so much. The Gurkhas will always be respected in the UK!
