Thanks for watching my first attempt at putting myself out there! Black & Blues was originally a song by the late Al Jarreau, but it became semi-viral in the form of the fanfare arrangement done by Benedict College, Fairfield Central High School, and I can only assume many other schools at this point.
If you search Black and Blues on TH-cam, you’ll come across many different versions, but mine uses a top part found in videos with William Bilal specifically. Go check him out.
I’m looking forward to doing many more videos so…

It's been a long 14 months of many many comments, and as a beeg introvert it really got to me, but now that I'm numb to it, I figured I could clear up some assumptions I keep seeing:
1) This was my first time attempting every aspect of making a video, including the recording part of it, so at the time I decided to do a cleaner version of it just to see if I could make the recording sound halfway decent (up for debate obviously). I actually wasn't sure at the time if I could play as intensely as I'd like without blowing out the mics, but I've learned since then how to do it a little better.
2) I felt like it might help some people if they knew I never meant for it to replicate everyone's favorite version(s). I figured playing it the same would just get me comments about copying the style, but judging by how many comments are telling me to play it that way, I should've been more faithful.
tl;dr if there's too much tonguing and not enough swing for your taste, I totally get it because I also would rather that style, but I wasn't trying to play it that way either. In hindsight my attention was divided between recording, video setup/editing, and the nervousness of putting myself on camera - so I could've spent more time on play style, I just wanted to do some part of it differently.
If I went back in time (not gonna), I'd play it the way I want, drop the drums, slow the tempo some, light it better, and edit it differently, but hindsight's 20/20 and it's 2021 so I'm moving forward.
Sincere thanks to everyone who gave love or suggestions in a chill way ❤
1 hour ago? Cool
I found the “original” yesterday and in the comments this version was proposed. I really enjoyed it. I’m poised to follow you in the future. Greetings from Germany
You did good it was "technically sound" nothing wrong with that. Iron sharpens iron take the feedback as areas to improve.
Mate, not even a handful of the people in the comment section would have the skills and guts to put themselves on camera and do what you did.
What I think everybody seeks is a hi def version of the already existing records. But you do it your way. Or a hi def version of what's existing (rounded corners and all).
Keep it up
you’re reading all the comments from the non musicians and peanut gallery brotherman! don’t sweat the shit! Love the production, bone sounds lovely. Keep it up my man!!
I can't enjoy a cover of this song comfortably after i heard that guy in the band play it with his entire being
I just came from that video and like... fuck me, man I get it. That man injected a feeling into my soul through a shitty 240p video.
He didn't just played it, William Bilal utterly embodied those notes. Black and Blues literally became him.
Same
Right? Fucking hell, dude's played so good he ruined it for me... ;-;
Completely agree.
Mmm, it’s so close, just right there, almost but no seasoning😉😂💯
Bitch byyyeeee😂😂😂
NO SEASONING 💀💀💀💀💀
💀💀💀💀💀 no seasoning tho lol
EXACTLY!! 😂😂
Yes he needed to let it marinate a lil longer 😂
Bro I like it, but its just too.... perfect.... like this is one of those songs you gotta hang over, exaggerate the slides etc. Play it as if its the only way you can get hurt out of your heart.
Very well said.
I agree completely 💯
Yeah you’re right. he’s playing real technical, which of course is fine. But there’s no feeling/soul in it.
@@bmeff3103 no. There’s not much soul in it in general. Regardless what you compare it to. I’ve heard this song played outside of a game setting and still sounded better than this. It has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with a person’s playing style.
@@bmeff3103 you’re not getting my point. You make it sound like you NEED a crowd to play it with soul or feeling. That’s like saying a singer needs a crowd or people around them to sing well or sing with soul. Soulful singers don’t. I didn’t say this guy sounded bad, I’m saying it doesn’t have the depth and style and soul as other versions I’ve heard. Take away that environment crap, and it still doesn’t change the difference in execution. Environment only matters if you make it matter. Again, I didn’t say this guy was bad, he’s just playing really technically. Now hop off my nuts and let me enjoy other renditions.
Obviously William and his brother's version are the standard but great tone here. I've seen some other musicians try to play multiple parts and put them together. Some are off beat and others don't have noice cancellation. Smelly Bone did a great job with all of that and the note were sharp and clear. Good musician here. Still those Bilal Bro's own this song!
He started something.
In all honesty, this guy is playing this song really well. He's playing it with different dynamics then William did, but he's still playing it at a high level.
I’m here because I saw the video of the college Kid and now I’m obsessed with hearing this being played 😂😂😂😂😂 I must admit you did a great job also 😮💨😮💨
Good...not bad. But good... kinda like fried chicken without salt.
Check out Benedict college's trombones doing black and blues

AMG TRND hey we've met at car meets.
Lol I literally pictured that. I just got done watchin Benedict College trombones with this
Nawl chicken with only salt and nothing else
I heard this played by Fairfield Central a few months ago and have listen to several other versions. As others have said Bilals set the bar high. You did a good job with great sound. Keep playing you have a great one in you. I would like to see the Bilals brothers play all the parts
I go to Fairfield lol
This has...no soul or emotion into it...I mean, it’s a nice and clean cover but...man William Bilal really set the standard for this fanfare
Mr. Thicc Nut no lies told
Yea
Ugh yall dont get it.
@skys i don’t think you get don’t get us wrong it was good but music is about soul i did marching band for about 10 years hbcu showstyle marchin al it is is soul on the move. So to try to replicate it while it was good wasn’t all that.
Hey man, I came here from the high school band video and I'm not a person to judge music, but I think you did an exceptional job playing. I read your pinned comment and my advice is to not let the hate get to you. You have way more people who support and appreciate what you have to offer the world, so you should focus you're energy and inspiration from there and less on the haters. Constructive criticism is invaluable, but some people are bad with putting their thoughts into words, so some things that can seem rude or hateful are just advice in disguise. Keep doing what you do, music is a language of love.
This was a Jam! You could tell that you put some passion into it... It is in my daily playlists for Trombone Zen!!!
So THIS is where the Spotify version comes from.
Love you did your own thing on this. Everyone saying it’s not the original should go watch the original and enjoy it for what it is. This is something new as a fresh take giving us more than one option of hearing this tune from the other videos. Well done! If you feel like YOU want something closer then heck, make another so you have both to be proud of! Regardless you’re an excellent player!!
Man this was clean good job
Really great tone, i liked it🙌🏽
The last chord hit at 1:45 is what I live for
Outstanding!!!!
Nice job! Very solid playing!
Very decent job young man. Might not be for everyone, but u did really well and for the love of music (ESPECIALLY BRASS) keep it up and KEEP ON KEEPING ON
Can't wait for the next video
Thanks for putting the song title and singer/composer Al Jarreau. I had no idea what this song was when I heard an excerpt of William Bilal playing it with Benedict’s Band. I enjoyed your cover of the song too. Bilal just kills it.
I enjoyed it and I appreciate the time and effort you put into… I think you’re only going to get better!
Yes Sir! Keep it up, man!
It's good
Edit: I wanna correct my opinion, actually now after hearing it more it does sound dope, this isn't an easy piece and he did a great job adding his own style. Well done m8
This is amazing!!!
Really great!!
Love this song so much, its just so damb good
I really love this
This is great, man. Ignore the armchair critics in the comments that can't play a single note of this.
If I wanted to hear William, I'd just go watch his old recordings. This is a cool and fresh take on an old favorite.
🤙🏼
Good job but this is the squared version of Benedict College's trombone battle. Gotta round those edges man
Preach
Killed it🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Clean as hell fam
GREAT JOB YOUNG MAN
You played the hell out of each and every one of them horn... One of my favorite videos now. I learned this song from William Bilal Playing for Benedict college...
Man doing work
This is a banger.
Great job!!!
That is a beautiful horn!
I think it's pretty good. The contrast between you and Bilal is quite stark due to your differences in playing style, especially with the articulations. I love how you sound in the upper register!
Hey man, just stumbled across your video. The name Al Jarreau drew me in, plus you and the tbone picture. You went for it, and I totally enjoyed it. You took the time to write it out, record all the parts with video. Being a bone player, you did something that crosses my mind now and then, but haven't gotten around to yet. And I like and appreciate what you have done. Play on!!!👍👍👍😁
This feels empty like it lacks musical seasoning too it or sum
I believe it's the lack of long notes in the high parts of the solo
Kalan Sandoval well how do you fix it?
@@a_random_person_lol_bruh from a technical standpoint his technique is great but it lacks emotion. So play with some emotion behind it
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
every single person in this comment section just talks about "seasoning" because it makes them sound smart and is easy to regurgitate. hilarious
You did really well!
He def wasn’t asking or comparing this to Bilals homegrown Black and Blues. This is a great cover and he’s a great musician nonetheless!
lol, You did a pretty good job recreating this solo. Fun stuff.
Way too straight. Sounds snapped to a grid or played too tight. Blues are meant to showcase emotion and sadness not precision. This had seasoning... just not blues/soul. Delay those ands and dont clip the staccato notes too short particularly in the lead. The Pain was slow and long back then and the blues is a summary and tale of this. Make that bone cry.
Precisely.
You should totally check out William Bilal's version. It's FULL of passion and emotion when he plays
let's see your cover homie!
@@mr.mouthfeel3975 and here you are again😂😂 it’s like I can’t escape you
Pause
Great cover man. Very nice.
Hey man it was great
🤘🤘
The epitome of "we can't have nothing" 😂
Extremely talented and extremely technical here.
I will say. Don't be afraid to let loose here. Bot everything needs to be so clean. Play it dirty and add some fat rips. Put your soul in and lose yourself in it.
Phenomenal job.
Got that HBCU sound right there it’s amazing to see a professional finally playing this fanfare
Its almost amazing, I can do without the pizzicato texture lmao
no it does not. This has no soul and sounds like he's playing it just as learned not with any heart. This is not an HBCU feel. It is very good and i commend him, but i wouldn't go that far.
Boy stop 😂
Damn good job
U gotta feel the music you’re playing it like its jus a song u gotta sing with your instrument
Aww hell yea that bass bone!!
This is amazing my guy, good freaking work. Only of course is nobody gonna put as much spice on it like that man did.
Really delightful and I appreciate your own take. Just copying does no one any good. Thank you!
I love how every single cover of black and bows I see has the same comment on not having enough passion in it
For all of you wondering why it sounds like it’s missing something: it is. He plays it without the diminished chord in there which is what makes the originals so good.
Damn extreme high notes
Everyone is like this lacks soul but I personally like this version. I think you did a good job and put some effort into this.
The arrangement belongs to Benedict College. Belonged to them for decades now. It was only played at Fairfield because William Bilals older brother, a trombonist at BC, taught it to him. Please fix the description
Are you doing any more videos, my guy?
Salu2 desde México🇲🇽❤
Eres genial con el Trombone🤙🏾
This was sooooo close to being on the same tier as the Fairfield trombones the one thing that would've made this perfect is if you didn't make so many notes so short, everything else was absolutey beautiful tho this is a close second in my opinion
This the unseasoned version
Nice editing
0:56 - 1:16 My favorite part of this
Leave this man alone! Good job my guy. Thanks for putting your version out there!
I dunno how I didn’t see this sooner but that’s a sub from me
Do you by chance have the sheet music to this?
This recording is amazing and so crisp, you played it with soul and I have not a single complaint. At 1:34, there is a high note that William Bilal plays in his Fairfield central HS video, which you don’t play. From what I have heard it is only in that recording that he plays it but it is the best thing I’ve ever heard and for me would make this rendition a million times better only if you added that high note.
In that video it is at 1:21, it is so good!
Also I listen to your rendition every day on Spotify, it is the best!
Hey! Is there possibly any way i could get a sheet music of this song i totally want my band to play this :) also if you do send it, i will try to get a recording of the band playing
Keep grinding man. There's only 1 Williams but this cover was cool. Salute
omg i wish i had the range to do this🙄 but you sounded amazing
what mouthpiece and trombone you use?
i have 2 trombone with dif mouthpiece but i think they all make differences in the pitch and stuff..
Y’all keep saying it has no soul but no one is telling this guy what it actually is. You cannot compare the two. Two different styles of playing. But I bet you this guy completely bilal under the table when it comes to technical playing. Just enjoy the post and shut up
Hes actually trying to recreate the actual song. Not blast it in a fanfare
Yes. This is exactly right
Exactly
Soul it's taught it's a feeling, all musicians know this. He's playing black n blues which is a Jazz song.
@@jamesmitchell9466 *isn't
Even though it isn’t as good as the benedict college or high school kids version a lot of effort was put into this I can tell
What part of the original song is at 0:29? Where does it match the original or what lyrics is it? Love this part.
That's black n blue crazy we learn this In high school with no sheet music
Not bad
👍 Good range
I’ve never said “it’s too perfect” in my entire life
Putting soul into music is pouring yourself into your instrument or the song you're playing. Every ounce and fiber of your being is in your instrument, this creates a sound like no other, a sound that can't be replicated, a sound that william bilal created, essentially raising the bar so high few people could even attempt to reach. The people in this comment section are essentially complaining that you were playing with your mouth and lungs not your soul. You played the music, but you weren't one with the music. A ghost of old soul music didn't possess you and force you to play a sound like no other can or will ever play. Great cover though :D.
arent there more pitch changes that how your hands move?
ive no clue about trombone. but ye.
Not bad. Keep it up
Hands down this is the 2 best..top 2......you playing the fuck out of this 🎵
Re-listening... You REALLY did a clean job.. the bass fill-ins you did were GREAT... still the same critique for timing. Wish you would’ve held the groove back JUST slightly. But this is still VERY good.
Time-keeping considered, it wasn’t great; BUT THOSE LOW NOTES, and high notes!!!! GREAT FRIGGIN JOB BRO
Idk I could keep count lol but I agree it’s pretty great the range
You got some Hot-sauce??? that’s what’s missing. But you still dope bro. Loved it.💪🏿
White and blues
This is good, the edit kinda killed it, doesn’t feel human, more blank machine, still good, your range and sound is good, I think, not sure cuz it’s a lot of editing
care to drop the sheet music?
Good job! Ignore the Internet trolls. I hope to see more from you soon. :-)
I don’t see trolls I see people actually pointing out flaws. Unless pointing out someone’s flaws is a bad thing.
GoDLI Repeatedly telling the guy that his rendition “has no soul“ is not helpful. MAYBE ONCE, with an explanation of what you mean by “has no soul“, and some suggestions for what might make it make it a “better” performance in your opinion. You must be new to the Internet, or you’re just trolling me too now. 😝
ckeilah ah why yes because asking someone why or how to help is just to hard and unnecessary. As someone who is playing an instrument you can always ask for help. If they weren’t to provide help then it’s a troll.
I didn’t see the same flaws y’all pointing out on the Benedict video tho stfu
Corruption Complete what video?
Ayo you got sheet music for this??
Where is the sheet music?
To say you recorded this yourself, it's pretty clean🙌🏾. I'm trying to use The acapella app to play multiple parts at once myself, and it's pretty difficult, so I know this wasn't completely easy to do. I think Benedict college's section played this waaaaay better though, but at the same time, this is still good for a standard version.
To make much Mayo and hummus in this one!
Doesn't outkast doing this in a song from their IDLEWILD album?
What type of mouthpiece are you using?
looks like a lindbergh
He’s not bad!
Losing up buddy give it some soul your playing it jus to play it you gotta feel the blues in you
What mouthpiece are you using?
