I stayed away from patterns that had short rows until I saw your video. Sweeeeet!!! AND the camera is nice and close up and never blurry. Thank you so much.
This is the best German short row video I've seen. So clearly explained, easily visible process, and the result is beautiful and easy to replicate. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this! I'm an English style knitter, and I appreciate seeing this technique from a thrower's perspective. Love the clear video, and uncluttered audio. Nothing detracts from a tutorial video more than poor visual quality, and silly distracting music. Yours is simply perfect!
This is THE BEST German short row explanation I’ve ever seen! Thank you! I’m a very experienced knitter but need refreshing on GSR every so often lol. So good!
Mimi, Thank you so much for this video. I was ready to pull my hair out with the wrap and turn. This is soooooo much easier!! I can actually see where I have worked the stitches. I love the contrast of the white background. Wonderful lighting. Keep up the good work. God has given you a gift of teaching and thanks again for sharing it with all of us.
I am knitting a shaw by Melanie Berg, using quince&eco yarn. It's coming out wonderful. Knitters are the best! Thanks for caring to share! I am up to making a German short row. I cannot put it off any longer, you gave me the know how to do this. God bless, thanks again for taking the time.
I just learned about German short rows in a new sweater pattern that I am about to embark on. Their link had expired so I searched and found your excellent video. Even after knitting for 50+ years, I am still learning! Thanks so much! I'm telling all my knitting pals!
Wow! I posted that seven years ago, and here I am, still referring to this great tutorial! I'm currently using another designer's pattern and am so puzzled about her idea of short rows, not using either the wrap and turn or the German Short Row----my favorite. So of course I've rewritten her pattern with GSR and HOPE it comes out right! Thanks again for this excellent tutorial!
Super easy instructions to follow. I'm working a shawl pattern that uses German Short rows to make bobbles and your explanation completely clarified the parts that were confusing me. Thank you!
"Just trust in the Lord and keep on knitting" I might just quote you on that. :) Brilliant technique! I'm about to teach at least 2 other friends this as well. How helpful!
I made another headband today and used this technique again. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video. This is just the best and you are a marvelous teacher!!
what a marvelously clear demonstration! I am hoping this will solve my questions for short row directions in an Isabel Isager pattern in Danish. I thought I could knit in most languages if I have a photo of the finished product but her directions for short rows left me gasping. Thanks
A Raveler friend shared the ink for this and I'm so thankful! Your explanation and demonstration is so clear, I'm looking forward to trying this with my next pair of socks. I typically knit socks toe up and work a short-row heel. This method looks like it will result in a much cleaner look! and NO holes!! :-) thank you so much!
Working this into my Woolly Wormhead hat pattern (she has a whole series of hats knit "sideways" / back and forth that are then seamed) and this is the BEST, most easily remembered technique for short rows I have found. Thank you SO much for the time and effort you put into this and the Part 2 video for substitution for a standard wrap and turn. Well done!
Thank you for this video! I stumbled on it after reading a post in Ravelry on the D-Bird pattern that said something about needing to do German Short Rows and I had no idea what they were. I like your tip on thinking about WT as turning and working rather then wrap and turn. "Trust in the Lord and keep knitting, Don't worry about it." ;) I just started knitting in Sept. 2013 and set my sights on the "Bird" as my first large project if I can get the different techniques down.
Thank you SO much. I have been struggling with a top-down sweater knitted on circular needles, using short rows at the neckline. I had nearly given up but your clear tutorial has made all the difference!
I'm knitting sweater that calls for GSR and the video I'm following from the sweater designer was not clear at all. So happy to have found your video which is easy and concise - thank you!!!
I was sent to another tutorial to learn short row and when I finished it, I looked for others. I found yours, then looked at one more. Yours is the best! Much simpler. Much less maneuvering of everything. Now I'm going to your other one :) Thanks!
This is super-dooper. I can't wait to see how it would work for a mitered corner or even if it could work. Even if it doesn't, I will certainly use it a lot. Thank you very much for teaching this old dog a new trick.
I wasfollowing a raverly pattern called a fire shawl and realised it called for german short rows once i was on the 4th flame. You explained this so well that once im done frogging it i will be able to confidently do this stitch. Thankyou!!
Thank you so much for these GSR videos, Mimi! I've watched other videos on the technique, but yours are the ones that have made this technique "click" for me. I'm so looking forward to using it!
Hi Mimi --- You have the most AMAZING tutorials that are so clean and well put together. I've officially make German short rows my niche, because everything else just baffles me to no end. SO glad I've found you! I do have one question. I'm knitting my first wool diaper cover (yep, I've graduated from the school of hat-and-scarf). This is what I'm facing: Round 1: k 35 (43, 49, 53), place marker B continue knitting the round. Marker A to Marker B marks the front of the garment. You will notice that the back of the garment (from Marker B to Marker A) has 14(10,6,6) more sts. Rounds 2-6: knit Round 7: work 1 set of short rows* (see Appendix) *note: turn 1 stitch before the markers for the first set of short rows, turn 2 stitches before each marker for the second set, etc). Any direction would be MUCH appreciated. :D
Elizabeth, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm so glad that the videos have been helpful. As to your pattern, I think that you may want to look at my other video on substituting GSR for standard wrap and turn short rows since it would be fairly long to go into in detail here. If that doesn't address your specific question, please contact me at pasticheknitwear@gmail.com and I'd be happy to help further.
Just got a pattern that calls for your tutorial - WOW!!! so easy and clean! Makes me want to reknit a shawl that had short rows that gave me SEVER agita!!! Thank you!
Thank you for a beautiful clear and concise tutorial. I’m knitting a cardigan with short rows and have put it away in a huff but will try again now with this method.
These short rows are just magic! I tried them beneath the yoke of a sweater and there are no holes visible. Thanks for your explanation, it was really helpful and quite witty!
Oh this is awesome!! Thank you so much!! I have been wrestling with short rows for awhile and have been disappointed with other methods. This is so fantastic! So clear and straightforward!!!
Thanks for this very clear, very understandable video. I had looked for a video on TH-cam demonstrating German short rows, but yours is the easiest to understand, I also have the Dreambird pattern and wanted to learn this technique for this shawl.
After I posted a lament on Knitting Paradise about the confusing instructions in a Knit Picks pattern, I had several helpful responses. One led me to your video. I'll definitely refer to it in the future. Thanks!
Dianne, as seen on this video when you turn from the purl side to the knit side, simply pull the working yarn up and over the right-hand needle, just keep the tension on it and knit as your pattern dictates. That is one of the beauties of this technique-it works equally well knitwise or purlwise.
Thanks for a helpful tutorial. I've tried several short row techniques- but you're so right- this one is almost undetectable in the finished product!!!
Kudos on a very well done video! Nice background -- it's not distracting and the lighting is great. The stitches are visible. Your voice is clear and the sound is good. Most important of all: You are a great teacher! Your explanations are clear and you show what you're doing clearly. Great job!! I am always on the lookout for more techniques to add to my toolbox. GSR is my latest and your video is a great one!
OMG! I love German short rows. I'm doing the Decibel shawl by Lisa Mutch which calls for two colors during the wrap and turn section and the German short rows are perfect! BTW, this is my first time doing short rows and your instructions are spot on. Thanks Mimi.
Someone had mentioned this technique on Ravelry. I didn't think it would be so easy!! I have a project on my needles requiring w&t but will be trying this brilliantly explained technique instead! Thank you for the video :-)
Wow, I am so excited to try this method! So far I've tried the wrap and turns, the Shadow wraps, and the Japanese short row methods. I hesitate to say this before I test it out, but this may become my new favorite...especially when knitting short row bust darts. No more unsightly wraps for me!
I'm with you on all of the other short row methods - I tried them all. This is, hands down, the best short row method ever! Best looking and easiest to work. What's not to love? I truly hope you become a GSR addict as I am. :-) Thanks so much for your comments - it makes my day to hear back from knitters who are giving it a try.
Wow! Love the tutorial. Thank you so much. I'm organizing my projects for the year and I have a lot of sock yarn. The wrap and turns always drive me batty. I discovered Japanese short rows last year but I think this German short row technique has it beat. I will actually get some socks completed this year. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for this video. I have now mastered German short rows as a result and am working happily on Ropedancer, a shawl pattern by Melanie Berg. You are an excellent teacher!

Excellent video, thanks. I'm going to try it out before going the next step and beginning my new project, a top down jumper. By the way, I am German, but have never heared of German short row before. 🤣
i was making different swatches to day to learn the japanese short row technique... until, tada' you popped with the german short rows...much more easier and neat... THANK YOU
I normally knit sleeves in the round using magic loop. I am working with a pattern that has me knitting german short rows, but since I am working in the round and there is really no "wrong" side I am confused and don't know how to do this. You are always so helpuful and I come back to this video time and time again. If you can provide with with any guidance that would be appreciated.
Happy Spring - Very clear instructions - I have heard that German Short Rows are easier - I will give it a try - thank you again for teaching!. I am trying a sweater by Isabell Kraemer will let you know how it goes.
Great video. I am doing the dreambird shawl and its worked mostly in garter st. My question is do we always slip stitch purlwise even in garter? Thanks again you video is realy great.
I know this is an old video but I'm hoping to get some help on a pattern that requires German short rows. This is my first sweater and it's to do the neck. I understand (thanks to your video) how to do the GSRs but what I don't understand is when the pattern says to continue the GSRs for 6 more rows. Short Rows Row 1 (RS): (K2, p2) 19 times, turn to work WS. Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, p2, (k2, p2) 15 times, turn to work RS. Row 3 (RS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, (p2, k2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn to work WS. Row 4 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, p1, k2, (p2, k2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn to work RS. Row 5 (RS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, p1, (k2, p2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn to work WS. Row 6 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, p2, (k2, p2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn to work RS. Repeat Rows 3-6 twice more. After Row 6 do I do the ribbing all the way to the end to pick up the double stitches? Right now my piece looks like a round with a triangle poking out the side. I am stuck at the end of Row 6.
Hi Mimi-beautiful video -- very clear. The white background makes for nice high contrast viewing. I've been knitting the Lizard Ridge afghan which incorporates short rows over very short distances and discovered that it's even easier to do Germain short row over 8 then 7 then 6 then 5 then 4 stitches by using backwards knitting instead of turning the work every time. I would love to make a video to show how it's done but don't have the resources. It's a great technique - any chance you could make a video showing German short row without turning the work utilizing backwards knitting?
Thank you for your video. It's clarifying the concept behind the instructions in the pattern I found. From the diagram, I can see what I'm supposed to end up with but I'm not 100% sure of how to go about it. The directions are to "let stand 2 x 10 sts and 3 x 8 sts which equal the number of stitches on either side of the neckline. Any clarification would be helpful. Thank you.
@@pasticheknitwear It's LaManana and don't even remember where I found it. It's a German company. I checked their web site which is in German of course. I see where I have to land up, shoulder wise and last night I experimented with scrap yarn and by combining the spacing of traditional short rows and the stitch technique of German rows (thanks again for the video), I arrived at the desired shape. So I guess I will improvise and do my best. Happy knitting!
So glad you like it! I love to share the addiction. Incidentally, I had to go check out the Aviatrix hats. Oh, my! I've got one on the needles right now for a new nephew. Thanks a bunch!
This tutorial is so well done! Very clear and concise. I want to use this method on a sleeve cap (my own original sweater pattern with cuff-to-top sleeves in stockinet) but don't know how to figure the number of short rows I need to use to achieve a 4" arc in 10 rows with 55 stitches. Would it be presumptive to ask if you can help me? Thanks so much!!!!
Do you know how many years I have been avoiding patterns that have short rows!!??? When I see "W &T" in the pattern it is an immediate deal breaker. NOW I can finally do the Lizard Ridge blanket!!!!!!

You're so welcome! Glad that it was helpful.
Thank you for this tutorial! Super helpful and you explain all the steps so in detail. Greetings from Finland :)

Thank you for a clear video on what looks like a less painful technique than the traditional wrap and turn.
Thank you for being your sweet manner in which you teach, so easy to learn from you.
What a lovely thing to say! Thanks so much for your encouragement!
This is wonderfully clear and looks beautiful - I was always bothered by the other methods looks.

I understand (thanks to your video) how to do the GSRs but what I don't understand is when the pattern says to continue the GSRs for 6 more rows.
Short Rows
Row 1 (RS): (K2, p2) 19 times, turn to work WS.
Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, p2, (k2, p2) 15 times, turn to work RS.
Row 3 (RS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, (p2, k2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn
to work WS.
Row 4 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, p1, k2, (p2, k2) to 2 sts before last turn,
turn to work RS.
Row 5 (RS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, p1, (k2, p2) to 2 sts before last turn, turn
to work WS.
Row 6 (WS): Sl1 wyif, GSR, k1, p2, (k2, p2) to 2 sts before last turn,
turn to work RS.
+knittingknut Great idea! I'll have a go and see about doing a video with it. Thanks so much!
This is a really helpful video. I can't wait to try this technique. Thank you so much.
This is such a great straightforward video. Many thanks!
I am so grateful for your video. Thank you very much for helping me learn short rows. :)
Oh my gosh! you make it seem so easy! I can't wait to try it
A really clear and easy to follow video. Thank you!
Thank you so much! That was really difficult to imagine when I read the instructions, but your video is wonderful!!
Clear and easy to understand! Thanks! Finally, I get it!
I feel like I can actually teach it now! Thank you so much!
Thank you.
Randy Kraft , the directions seem very unclear to me as well. What pattern are you working with?
@@pasticheknitwear It's LaManana and don't even remember where I found it. It's a German company. I checked their web site which is in German of course. I see where I have to land up, shoulder wise and last night I experimented with scrap yarn and by combining the spacing of traditional short rows and the stitch technique of German rows (thanks again for the video), I arrived at the desired shape. So I guess I will improvise and do my best. Happy knitting!
Thank you for sharing.. This's fantastic technique for short rows....
squeeeeee!!!I I truly love learning something new, and I especially love how neat my little Aviatrix hats are looking now! Thank you so much!
+Norma Byrd I was thinking it would be a pretty sleeve cap, too!
Thank you so much for your tutorial, Mimi! It was so clear and helpful!
Thank you for the very clear explanation and video. Much appreciated.
Do you know how many years I have been avoiding patterns that have short rows!!??? When I see "W &T" in the pattern it is an immediate deal breaker. NOW I can finally do the Lizard Ridge blanket!!!!!!
