I can't believe it took me 12 years to finally look up a video on German short rows. Thank you for this clear and efficient video. Why would anyone do w&t when there's this? It is far superior.
This is the clearest instructions for German short rows. Oh my GOSH why was I so AFRAID of it … I have no idea … anyway…. Now I’m going by to refer to your video for the rest of my life
Your tutorial is quite a bit clearer than some others. You show pulling the yarn more to the back which cleared up a problem I've been having! Thank you!
This was such a great tutorial!!! really!!! no extra blah blah blah and very clear instruction. I have been avoiding any sweater with german short rows forEVER!! (which leaves very little choices). I'm excited and determined to conquer my fear of German short rows! Thank you so much for posting this -
Thank you so much. I have been trying to learn the GSR for 3weeks. Finally found you and now I can do it. You are so clear in talking and in the doing. I am 90 yrs old and never ran into GSR before. Thank you again!!😊
I was having a difficult time with the part where you tug on the yarn to create a "double" stitch. After watching closer, I realized the yarn was wrapped around my needle in a loop compared to the "up and over" look that your stitches had. I slipped the stitches the opposite way in order to correct this and was then able to achieve the "double" stitch after tugging on the yarn. Thank you for a close up view and now I'm going to take a dive into the best way to wrap yarn around my needles when I do knit/ purl stitches. Thank you again and all the best!
Thank you for quick and clear tutorial video. I have been knitting for almost 39 years and never used short row knitting. I have a pattern I am stumped on because it says to slip stitch but doesn't mention short row knitting at all. I asked for help on a knitting group and was told I needed to work short rows. Why doesn't the pattern state that? All it says is to slip stitches. Your video has helped me to not have to change neck style on pattern. Thank you!
Thank you :) Uhm, I can't be fully sure. But, my best guess is either Autumn & Indigo worsted yarn. OR Explorer Knits and Fibers worsted. Sorry, I can't say for sure though.
And what is this good for! I went to Germany when I was 18 and came back to Ireland when I went into early pension bur this is the first time I hear of this...crochet is much easier to learn.
Hi, we knit into them on the final row to complete the short row section. At that stage you will have finished making DS (double stitches) and want to knit them normally to resume regular knitting. Hope that helps
For in the round short rows, once you complete all your short rows, is that when you the all the stitched in the round? So basically you turn for all your short rows back and forth, then knit all your stitches? I am knitting a bottom up Ragland in the round and want to shape the back for an inch and my gauge is 8 rows per inch. Bc of this video I think I understand it but i wanted to make sure again. 🙏🙏
Yep, that sounds right! You work back and forth for a bit (usually about 1" for shaping in sweaters) and then you continue working in the round again to resume your regular sweater pattern.
So say you knit all of your double stitches in a round on the right side, is there going to be holes? It’s the problem I was having with standard short rows and was getting frustrated with it.
You shouldn't get any holes, as long as you work the DS as a normal stitch you should be good. I've never had holes with this method, it's why I love it so much it really is nearly invisible unless you're looking hard for it.
Hi, yeah you knit back and forth for as many rows as your pattern tells you to. And when it's done you do continue knitting in the round as normal. The amount of rows needed for short row shaping depends on the project that you're making and the shaping that you want to create
Thank you for this easy to understand tutorial. I'm about to knit my first top down sweater and the pattern uses W&T for the shaping, can I use German Short Rows instead?
Thank you :) I think you can substitute them, but you might have to ask the designer if that will change anything first. The placement of the turns might be a bit different if there's a stitch pattern to follow instead of just stockinette. Hope that helps
Short rows are used for a lot of things, but I see them most commonly used to make sweaters/tops fit better. They can create a more tailored fit for knitted clothes.
I know what you mean. This is video is pretty clear but I have to concentrate that bit extra as it's not the way I knit. Brain has to reconfigure the hands 😁

LOVE THIS VIDEO, REALLY HELPFUL!
I'm so happy to hear it!
Did not get the bit about stopping before you get to the DS, then you knitted into it - how did you do that if you stopped before you got to it???

I love the needles....what are they please?
Chiaogoo
Chiaogoo Red Lace Needles, my favorite :)

The Blue Mouse Knits thank you!! Went with shadow wraps but will def remember this for next time.
Thanks 🤗🤗🤗🫂🫂😊
Thank you 😊
:)
If a pattern just says work a GSR what should I do?
They probably mean work a DS (double stitch). Hopefully it says work X amount of stitches and work a GSR (meaning a DS)
@@TheBlueMouseKnits I undid all of the work and chose a different pattern thank you for the help tho😭❤️
Most helpful! Thank you ever so much! 😘
Thank you, I'm so glad to hear it :)
So you knit this back and forth? For how many rows? And when it’s done you continue your work in the round like normal?

I don’t understand the point
Short rows are used for a lot of things, but I see them most commonly used to make sweaters/tops fit better. They can create a more tailored fit for knitted clothes.
I cannot for the life of me understand or learn when an instructor is knitting continental style.
I know what you mean. This is video is pretty clear but I have to concentrate that bit extra as it's not the way I knit. Brain has to reconfigure the hands 😁
Thank you! You make it so easy to understand
So happy to hear that, thanks!
