This scene so beautifully illustrates how grief works...you can laugh with your friends but that doesn't mean you're healed. Her heart was still completely shattered but her friends were there to hold her up ❤️
I lost my daughter. She was 29years old and so beautiful and sweet. Sally Field acting in this part nailed it. She portrayed a grieving mother very well. Makes me cry every time I see it. Hits home. She did fantastic job. 🌹
Sally Fields shows in this scene alone how great of an actress she is. She played all the wild emotions of losing her daughter perfectly. Powerful scene. And Olympia's well timed joke was just so perfect.
I cried when I first saw this scene, but in 2005, I loss my daughter and those words stood out to me. Yes, Sallie Field put all those emotion right where they should be. I asked the same questions and thought the same thoughts. One of my favorite Movies of all time!!!
This has got to be one of her best performances of all time. The way she bounces from crying to panicking to denial is so raw to watch. I feel my heart hurting right along with her. “I don’t think I can do this” is something anyone who’s lost a loved one can understand. There are days, moments, months or years where it feels like you can’t keep going.
I think Dolly was very under appreciated in this movie, she was brilliant, the scene with spud after Shelby died is amazing, when Spud says "Whats this for anyway" and Dolly turns around and says "it makes you beautiful", you can see her face and know she doesn't believe that anymore after Shelby dying.
That scene with her husband is beautiful. When he discusses shelby’s husband losing her, and says that he doesn’t know if he could handle that..... so understated and honest without having the husband being emotional or soppy.
Truvey was always trying to connect w/Spud, hoping to share & receive some affection. Spud has just admitted he would be devastated "if something like that happened to him".(Truvey dying). Distracts himself from his emotions, by messing with the wax. I think the emotion on Truvey/Dolly's face, is because he has, finally admitted that he loves her. She says "it makes you beautiful" & he is looking straight at his beautiful wife. Dolly is gorgeous, marvelous and talented !
On The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, there was a Boudreau Family and I thought it would have been so funny if one of them talked about a Distant Relative named Ouiser who was always so nasty.
Yes is beautiful!! I tried to share with my Goddaughter who can totally relate, but the people who have her illegally in custody apparently deleted so she cannot see.. ABSOLUTELY they've no sense of humor at all.. This is rich!!💎
You should see how Black People carry on at a Funeral. The Family scream, cry and mourn even when he/she is a SOB! Then the Family is allowed privacy for Two Hours then The "Party starts. My Family and I have so much fun that we have to "remind" ourselves that it's a Funeral. Yet we know that the "Dead" would want us to continue to have fun with our lives.
I don't know how many takes they needed for Sally Field to capture those expressions and reactions but it's priceless. From the "wth??" at the start to "omg I don't want to laugh"... the whole thing is perfect. And the buildup is amazing also. Her swings from anger to frustration to utter sadness and back are just... wow... Olympia Dukakis reminds me so much of my grandmother in this scene. She pulls off a southern matriarch so well. My grandmother has always tried to defuse tense situations with humor. "Here... hit this" will go down as one of the best lines in a movie ever.
It's been 20 years since I've first seen this movie and yet I always cry at this scene each time even though I know what happens. My sister died when she was 14 years old and it definitely took a toll on me and altered my life in many ways. It wasn't until this movie, until I saw this scene, that made me realize how my mother must've felt. Even someone so strong can be broken down. To any parent out there that has lost a child, my thoughts are with you. I know you always planned to go first, which is normal and the way it should be, but you'll always have those memories to reflect on. Be grateful you were able to have them exist in your life, even if the timing wasn't enough. There's never enough time.
Even though it's been over two years now since my dad died suddenly after a heart attack, I still ask: "Why?" It still hurts. There's an empty space in my life and everyone else's that can't be filled. It doesn't get easier. You just learn to live with the loss.
You don't even realize how patronizing and tone-deaf your words are? Do you think your preaching will make them feel better? Do you think YOU can lecture parents of dead children what they should think or feel? You are telling them to be ''grateful''? Would you come to Ukraine and tell parents of MURDERED babies that they need to be ''grateful''? How ignorant are you? PISS OFF!!!!! You still don't understand a single thing!
Absolutely love this movie!! Brings me 2 tears everytime!! This scene Litterally came true for me. I lost my beloved son at 22 years and 2 days old. Travis passed from acute asphyxiation under a car. I want to know why, why, why!!! I too need a weezer to punch!!! So much anger, devastation, loneliness, sorrow, gut wrenching ❤ break. Its just a nightmare I never wake up from!! People tend to run away after the funeral and expect you to "get over it". So 2 all the people who have lost your beloved, hugs 2 u and just know u r not alone!!!
Probably one of the best scenes in cinema history. The way it takes you from crying with M'lynne to feeling her anger and despair to straight into laughing is incredible. Masterclass material.
This was the saddest scene in the movie, one that all mothers who’ve lost a child can relate to. And it also was the funniest scene in the movie. I want a t-shirt that says “I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux.”
Sally Field is such a tremendous actress. This scene especially is just so well done, so emotionally riveting. The entire cast of this film does a wonderful job, but Sally really hits hit home here
I liked how they flipped emotions from sadness and grief to laughter within the same instance because that is how life is at times. Sometimes the answer is sitting there in front of you.
STOP using such derogatory slurs as ''loon''. Some people do struggle with drastic mood swings, some people ARE mentally unwell, and people like you make it so much worse for them by using such slurs. Shame on you
Rest in Peace. You made every movie better and your humor was/is classic. Thank you for making me laugh. Even as a little boy I knew you had great comedic chops.
I think of this scene often. Sally Field has something larger than talent. This “breakdown” scene could have been played in so many different ways but I just can’t imagine anyone else that could even get close to what Sally is doing here.
One of the most convincing cinematic performances I have ever seen. Whatever Sally Fields tapped into for this scene must be sacred. Absolutely magnificent demonstration of her talent.
Sally Fields is my favorite all time actress....she quickly went through the stages of grief, without a hitch...makes me cry every time. she was also fantastic in "Places in the Heart", (a must see movie).
I remembered when first watched thus movie with my mom. This scene made me cry and laugh at the same time. Dolly's laugh is so adorable. It was so good Clariee was there to lighten up the situation if even for a moment.
It’s incredible how this goes from one of the saddest moments in movie history to one of the most, flat-out hilarious moments in movie history in a snap. Brilliant. Definitely in my top ten movies of all time.
Sally Field is so petite and yet massively powerfyl in expressing her emotions. It's been more than 30 years but this scene alone is just a masterpiece.
2:18 What a great scene, Sally nailed, I don't know how one would even prepare to act this scene out, talent. My wife loved this movie, she never would watch a movie that had any type of loss, if she watched a movie not knowing there was gonna be sadness in it, she would never watch it again, this movie was the exception, she named our first cat Shelby, I lost my wife at age 45 back in November 2022, I will watch this movie once a year every year as long as I live, I feel her next to me when I watch it, it brings a little comfort but it's the worst comfort anyone can feel, I Love You and miss you Sweetie! Whoops, I already left a post on this thread a while back, I'm just gonna leave it up.
I watch this scene whenever I experience loss because it provides some great catharsis when I feel like I can't fully express how I feel or don't have anyone to vent about the unfairness of the loss.
I've seen this movie over 5000 times in my life and this scene still makes me bawl. Phenomenal acting on everyone's part. This will always be my all time favorite movie.
I was pretty little when I watched this. I didn't understand all the things the ladies were talking about, but I was so sad when Shelby got sick and all, and when she died. I remember, though, that I really liked Sally in the movie. I wanted to be like her when I grew up. She was my favorite in Forrest Gump, too, though she and Bubba were at my top list.
This movie and especially this scene always makes me cry 😭I lost one of my best friends in a motor cycle accident about 5 years ago and while I'm sad that I lost my friend..I feel even sadder for his poor mother. She has lost two of her children (one at child birth), then she lost both of her parents, an uncle, and recently her brother died. The woman has had so much loss in her life that I honestly don't know how she gets out of bed in the morning. I know she deals with depression because we spoke about that the last time we talked. I hope and pray that she has more people in her corner uplifting her because she needs it.
I lost my dad April 2016 just before his 65th birthday. He had managed to live 25 years with Crohn’s Disease and we had no warning of how sick he was until the day before he died. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s myself later in 2016 and had to face surgery and living with the disease without my dad who had always been my rock. Even with the passage of time I still have moments where this scene aptly describes every emotion I feel over losing my father. ❤️
I can’t stop watching this scene. I’ve lost every woman I loved deeply. My mother, my aunt, n my best friend. I miss them so bad. N this scene is on repeat like a favorite song
My Mom used to say that Sally's character portrays what a person goes through after they have lost a loved one. After losing both my Mom and Dad, I can say that she was right. It is like being on a roller-coaster from Hell. One second you're doing well and the next second you're balling your eyes out!
This woman (Sally Field) is so talented I remember when I first saw this! She shattered me! I mean destroyed me! I cried like a baby! This woman is one of the greatest actresses of our time!
This is my favorite scene in this movie. RIP Olympia Dukakis. What amazing actresses these ladies are. You go from crying one minute to cracking up the next and that's how life is. 💁🏻♀️
So sad to see how helpless the mom must have felt to lose her daughter Shelby at an age when she could have been completely capable of raising her beloved Alex as a very happy and healthy child. Oh, how heartbreaking cruel can diabetes type 1 can be?
Just lost my SO of seven years with who I have a beautiful four-year-old daughter and the emotion Sally Field displays in this scene is spot on. Grief, anger, wondering "why", all of it...especially why a little girl now has to grow up without her father. When anyone asks me how I'm doing, well, this scene answers that question.
Hannah Farmer I lost my dad last year unexpectedly and there are still days I don’t know how I will manage without him. 🙏🏻❤️ Prayers and love to you over your loss. God keep you.
Sally Field is really good at suddenly transitioning from crying to angry, doing both really well in this scene.
She did it in Sybil in 1976.
She does it in a lot of movies.
She also does a variation on it in Mrs. Doubfire. "The whole time? I can't believe this--THE WHOLE TIME!?"
What did Shelby die from
@@terrionwright356 she had Type 1 Diabetes. Her mother donated a kidney but her body rejected it and she died from complications.
This scene so beautifully illustrates how grief works...you can laugh with your friends but that doesn't mean you're healed. Her heart was still completely shattered but her friends were there to hold her up ❤️
Yes. Great dmwqy to put it
Ok then
I remember my cousins and friends made me laugh on my mom's funeral. It's how life works
❤❤ it'll will never run out.

Sorry for your loss, stay strong 🤍
I'm sorry about your daughter. Take care of yourself. God bless you.
What happened?
So sorry for your loss. Praying for you 🙏. 💜🕯
RIP Olympia Dukakis. This will always be one scene I will always remember her for.
I'll always love her in 'Moonstruck' which is one of my favourite 80s movies
RIP Olympia Dukakis
She was name dropped in the Seinfeld episode where Jerry didn't know the name of the woman he was dating.
Same! Love it
What? She is? Damn it!!!
R.I.P. Olympia Dakunkias (1931-2021).
Sally Fields shows in this scene alone how great of an actress she is. She played all the wild emotions of losing her daughter perfectly. Powerful scene. And Olympia's well timed joke was just so perfect.

Brilliant actresses. One of the most touching , memorable scenes in the history of film making!
Tout à fait d'accord Chantal ! Je le fais avec Debra le sangre
well those are all Academy awards winners and a grammy winner 😂
This drastically turned from an utterly tragic heartbreaking moment into a ridiculous comedic scene.
On The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, there was a Boudreau Family and I thought it would have been so funny if one of them talked about a Distant Relative named Ouiser who was always so nasty.
Called ‘Comedic Relief’ :)
But in a believable way. That’s what makes it perfect.

This is why Sally Field is a legend. Master Class in acting right here. ❤️
Sally Field should have gotten an award for this scene. I die every time Clarice says "Go on M'lynne, knock her lights out!"
This scene. It makes you cry and then laugh so hard your tears turn to tears of laughter. Brilliant.

Sally captured broken hearted mother over the loss of her child!💝
