Sleeve the bad cylinder, hone the rest and rebuild/refresh it. The old “as long as you’re in there”... reseal the turbo as long as the shaft endplay is within spec.
without taking the parts to a machine shop, you are flying blind. A good machine shop will have sources and options that you may not know about or have considered. Totally rebuildable.
Don’t forget to replace all worn valve seals or you’ll be burning oil soon after. I’d get the heads rebuilt and machined flat, new crank to protect against any warping that occurred from overheating, sleeve the single bore, deck the block to be sure it is true to the machined head, lap the valves, all new valve springs, new pistons/rings, two new rods, have the new crank balanced to the new rods and two old ones, hone the other bores to knock the glaze off, and send it!
So Cat offers oversized pistons and bearings. You may want to consult with your machine shop to see how much they would want to bore the engine over assuming that the scoring in that one cylinder will clean up within .010” or .020” I forget what size cat offers. I would check with them about turning the crank as well. But the price the dealer gave you for a new crank isn’t bad. Also take a good look at the rubber grommets that are around the fuel tank supply and return. If they are damaged or loose and appear that they have been letting dirt into the fuel tank now is the best time to pull that fuel tank out for cleaning. Also something to think about is you will have to look into cleaning or replacing the DPF as when the engine goes bad it probably sent excessive amounts of oil through the exhaust potentially ruining that filter. Once you pull that hydraulic pump stack off the engine you will run into a plastic pump coupling. I recommend replacing that but take a good look at the very least to see if it is damaged.
I never thought I would find a skid steer rebuild so fascinating. Absolutely loving this content and how you guys keeping plugging away to solve the issues. So impressed with your skills.
Cleaning that Caterpillar will bring the viewers in. You two are great on camera. Down to earth normal people. And very knowledgeable. I warmed to you first time I saw your video. Take care you!
Rebuild. At the beginning, I was saying get another motor. But you have some good parts. Build on that, get replacement parts, and put it together. Good video.
Compared to about 7K for a rebuilt motor a couple of sleeves and new pistons and con rods, even if it needs a new crank you should be able to do it for $2500. There are after market suppliers for parts for this engine. including a full rebuild kit. Cheers
Wow I am the middle of the same story. What I found out is that buying a completely new engine is not too badly priced. Your engine model is very readily available. It is worthwhile looking into.
Auctions are always a gamble but this looks like that "lost" key was deceptive by Copart . It is what it is. Thanks for the videos and we'll follow along.
By the way cat has one key we have skid steers,a dozer, excavator and loader....all use same key and sometimes I need to move other contractors machines out of the way and I use my key
Definitely worth rebuilding..bore cylinder walls then sleeve. The crankshaft might be salvageable .Your best friend right now is a machine shop.also think about sending out your injectors for testing.$120 to $150 to test all in my area.Y’all will definitely get your money back even after a few years of use.enjoying the series.
It's coming right along, with all your work you'll have something worth far greater then you paid.......... Stick with it............... Hopefully you'll have a great working piece of equipment..................
This project is starting to look good as new again! I think it would be best to get a full rebuild kit. That way it will have all new gaskets and seals, and instead of half the parts being new, they will all be new.
Get the crank reground, all new bearings, two new con rods, gaskets etc. New set of rings, I would check the valves, some could be bent!! Also check the turbo, that could have ran dry. Good luck.
Go to the machine shop and determine what can be done with the block and crankshaft. Looks like the crank would need cut and all cylinders wound need oversized, if possible. They'll boil the block out, so the minute shavings should be washed out by the boiling process. Basically cylinders need bored, check all the rods and four new piston sets, matched to the overbore size. Engine gasket set. A bunch of engine reassembly and you back in business.
Looks like you have some decent advice on this one, yeah, I'd add one more step, strip the head and take it to the machine shop to get it tanked and checked for cracks. A small overbore may clean up that one badly scored cyl or it might need a .100 heavy overbore and a sleeve pressed in. Certainly have the crank checked, likely spin it to the next undersize for rods and check the mains.
I'd sleeve it, buy a new crank and whatever pistons, rods etc you need and send the head to a shop and have them refurbish it. I am spending your money though.
The oil is on top of the 2 pistons due to the excessive bearing clearance in those journals dumping oil in those bores. No rings will be able to control that amount of oil. One new piston and sleeve 2 new rods and a machined [if possible] or new crank. Of course new bearings gaskets and seals. Good to go !!
I’d rebuild the motor, it’s not that badly damaged. Get a new piston and sleeve. Resurface the crankshaft. New bearings, rings, etc. I wouldn’t mess with anything else, i.e. rebuild the head. You need to flush the motor oil passages thoroughly with a solvent pressure sprayer to remove all the metal particulate. Check the turbo charger since it runs on a layer of oil and it may be scored. Lastly, Be sure to pull the hydraulic pump and check for wear on the nylon splined coupler which is mounted to the flywheel and drives the hydraulic pump. It’s a wear item and the splines will strip out over time.
what a good project. I hope it is economically viable for you. I believe that with a new crankshaft and pistons it is brand new. The cylinders will have to rectify and surely make a plan for the block and cylinder head Saludos desde Argentina
looks like sleeve time and new rods. i wouldn't trust crank unless it was black light tested for cracks. you guys aren't afraid to build anything. it will be better then new when your done.
Been doing this for a long time. Take everything to a machine shop and have them evaluate it. If you decide to rebuild, have them get the parts and do the machine work. You can build it.
Not sure if you have a crank machinist near, but I have one by me that fixed up a crank for my Mustang for about $100 after I got him the specific bearings he told me to get. Certainly worth looking into.
Thanks for doing this video, because I have been really thinking of buying a salvaged skid steer , as it makes them "almost" affordable. Have a great weekend.
I was a mechanic for 34 years for a big company. Now I enjoy watching SOMEONE ELSE doing the work...
Sleeve the bad cylinder, hone the rest and rebuild/refresh it. The old “as long as you’re in there”... reseal the turbo as long as the shaft endplay is within spec.

Genuinely enjoy your videos more than most Hollywood films ..............Thankyou for every thing you do............

You are very fortunate to have a lot of experienced viewers who will give you quality advice for free.

Probably the cleanest it's been since it left the factory
The two of are open to building just about anything. Great job
You guys aren’t afraid of anything. Love your content every time
Rebuild.
At the beginning, I was saying get another motor.
But you have some good parts. Build on that, get replacement parts, and put it together.
Good video.
You guys rock not afraid to go into the unknown and find a diamond in a rock pile. Enjoy the videos. Thanks
When it is all said and done. You know you will have a good piece of equipment. That is a lot of mud. Love the videos.
You guys are the Picasso’s of all things mechanical!!! Keep crushing it!
I like your high Spirit 👏👏
Love this content guys - you aren't afraid to tackle anything.

Yup I too am in agreement with you, I think this is doable and not too painful for the wallet
I agree. Block looks good. I'd have a machine shop assess if the crank can be turned and go that route if possible.
Nope. Reman short block
Wow I am the middle of the same story. What I found out is that buying a completely new engine is not too badly priced. Your engine model is very readily available. It is worthwhile looking into.
Love the channel guys, I graduated from Dixie High in Due West, S.C. 1980. Then moved out of state.
It's amazing what you guys can do with a variety of vehicles. You're GREAT!
its a mess but satisfying to watch you guys refresh it.
They hold value, glad to see you rebuilding it!
Auctions are always a gamble but this looks like that "lost" key was deceptive by Copart . It is what it is. Thanks for the videos and we'll follow along.

a very ambitious job!! you have your work cut out for you. stay safe.
YES you will prevail.
Love to see this type of content. To see how other people fix and repair things. Speed things up when mundane and speak when important content.
Please keep working and fix this engine, enjoying watching it.
Best channel on TH-cam
Always wanted a skid steer. Glad i can watch you guys work on one!
Great video, hopefully the engine shop can fix the crank 🔧👍
Shop vacuum before and during the pressure washing makes things go more efficiently
Yea...really avoids all the repeat washings as dirt splashes up.
Don't really think they gonna build foundations with this...use for go lifting at shop
The hard work will pay off nice work.
Hello from the Netherlands, that's an amazing project jump in it guys and make it a success good luck.

I’m thinking this is gonna be another one of my favorite go to videos, so far all good action and no b.s.. Thanks guys.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
What a challenge you both are undertaking!
Good job guys. You will have something nice to work with when it’s finished.
Bring it to a good machineshop. The you get the best motor you can get!
Live the cleaning of that cat, can watch it all day!!!
It's coming right along, with all your work you'll have something worth far greater then you paid.......... Stick with it............... Hopefully you'll have a great working piece of equipment..................
I love watching your videos there's nothing you guys can't fix keep up the awesome work
I’m impressed that you weren’t afraid to tear into a Diesel engine. I bet rebuilding that one will be way cheaper than buying another engine.
Loving the build! Unfortunate circumstances but glad to see you guys continue with the project!
Glad to see you guys tackle the project, will be a good machine.
I would hope, "IF" you rebuild this motor, you will replace all those rubber hoses & clamps (while it's accessible") to prevent future failure
Absolutely rebuild and refresh that engine !!
After seeing what Purple Power is capable of looks like I’ll be cleaning the siding of the house with it this spring.
Great job on the tear down and the deep cleaning
Gary here from Ireland
Love the video you’re doing great work

For cleaning the skid steer they have belly pans use a power washer and the dirt will wash down onto the ground
Get the crank reground, all new bearings, two new con rods, gaskets etc. New set of rings, I would check the valves, some could be bent!! Also check the turbo, that could have ran dry. Good luck.
Love the assortment of builds CARS / RV / BIKES /TRUCK & HEAVY MACHINERY

Good afternoon from southwest Florida
You guys always clean your projects up to like new.
Excited to see the progress on this machine.
You bros are hard workers and really talented.
You guys could've brought that dirt to my house in Anderson lol could fill in some holes lmfao 😂

This channel genuinely needs to grow, its such a good channel, you both do great work and have just a positive and humble way of doing things!!
Looks like a basket case. Glad to see awesome progress.
Rebuild it machine shop is the best way too make sure.
Looks like you guys are having all kinds of fun

Better than new when you’re done
Nice project...
This will be an awesome series. I hope you guys make it 'better than OEM' and make it look fresh outta the showroom. Nice project.
I hope you can get it together at a good price, so it will be a decent profit, what you do not get paid for is the washing time 😉 nicely worked.
Just found your channel. Good content for sure.
5yrs old and it was that filthy? not surprised it needs a lot of work... nice content though cant wait to see you rebuild it...
Parts are not badly priced so check a machine shop for a crank regrind and also get the head recoed as well make it as good as new 👍👍👍👍
Rebuild the engine. You have purchased a top brand skidsteer in a CAT. I think it will serve you well. 👍🏻👍🏻
Just discovered your channel. Good stuff. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks for taking the time to do these.
A lot of work ahead.Good luck.

Great series of videos in this build lads, enjoying it immensely! 👍🏻
Glad to see you guys rebuilding it.. Can't wait for the next video.
The engine rebuild is definitely the way to go ,probably around 3,000 $ all in and your good to go !
Machine Shop vote for me 👍
Looking very clean.
Impressed with your work!
looks like sleeve time and new rods. i wouldn't trust crank unless it was black light tested for cracks. you guys aren't afraid to build anything. it will be better then new when your done.
Glad to see you are fixing it, and cleaning it yp
Great video and something different to rebuild.
Definitely, the content is excellent.
Keep going you guys are doing a great job, and you will be happier that you rebuilt it.
Big fan, you've got your hands full for sure
Take it to a machine shop and see what they say. Excellent work and thanks for the awesome content stay safe and take care

Lol 😂
Love to watch a build that I know nothing about!
I like the proyect and do your magic !
I love all your videos. It’s always something different and I like that!
Turn the crank and new rods and you'll be good bro. I've put them back together with scratches. Just hone it and run it.
