Add APRS Maps and an IGate to the Yaesu FTM-400DR

  • This video shows how to add APRS maps to the FTM-400DR using a cheap Windows tablet and the data cable that is included with the radio. Also, the video shows how to tie the whole setup into APRS-IS allowing you to serve as an IGate for stations in the area.
    This is yet another experiment for me in my never ending search for the "perfect" APRS rig. Is this setup perfect? No. Unfortunately the FTM-400DR won't accept transmission requests through this same data cable. Therefore, you can't digipeat or beacon objects that you create on the map or type up messages on the virtual keyboard for transmission. Also, a tablet mounted next to the drive pushes what's legal and what's safe. If you choose to go this route in your car, be sure you know what the law says about screens in the car in your area. Above all else, though, don't manipulate the software while driving. Distracted driving kills. You'll notice that I'm parked in a parking lot as I'm looking at what objects are in my area.
    Where might this be useful? The data cable connection would be great for people who use the 400 as a base station radio and hooking a computer to it would add a lot of functionality and the distracted driver issue is off the table. This setup would also work well for a SAG vehicle if run by the passenger.
    Bottom line... $40 and a mount brings increased situational awareness to the FTM-400DR. $24 more makes it an IGate.
    If you get a Winbook and you want Windows to treat your Micro SD card like a normal hard drive, check out this forum from the Micro Center tech support site: www.mctsol.com/...

    Crackerjack video.... you obviously have public speaking experience... no "ummm".. "ahhhh", or other noises! No skipping around.. Went from A to B to C, etc..Thank you for a great production.
    I wish all HAM Clubs conducted such clear, concise educational sessions... HAM Radio would attract a lot more participants.

    +James Brown, thanks for the feedback. Not only is it nice to hear that the time spent putting together the video was worthwhile to someone, but your use case may inspire someone else to do something similar. A couple of comments. One, since you're using this for SAR, you might want to look into the program SARTrack. I haven't used it personally, but I know it's the only APRS client built with SAR as the main focus. It may offer you some features that APRSIS32 does not. Its programmer is fairly active on the TAPR APRS mailing list and I understand that the SARTrack folks maintain a mailing list of their own for SAR professionals and volunteers that are using APRS. So, even if you stay with APRSIS32, it might be worth checking out just for the mailing list. Two, the one downside of using the FTM-400DR is that you can't send out third party objects from it that are generated by the computer. If you want to send objects to your folks in the field, you might want to consider hooking up to another radio like the Kenwood TM-281A via a handmade PTT circuit or a Mobilinkd TNC. My video "Budget APRS Mapping Solution and Portable Battery Box" talks about the Kenwood/Mobilinkd connection a little. I haven't done SAR operations, but if I were, I think this ability to throw objects on the map in the middle of an operation would be useful. I hope Yaesu opens up this functionality to us. In the meantime, this is a technique for getting the computer control without shelling out for something like the Kenwood TM-710. Three, I'm just down the road south of Nashville. At some point I'd like to pick your brain on procedures and lessons learned from using APRS in search and rescue operations. I'm also an EMA volunteer and we've talked about doing something similar here. Please let me know next time you all have a public relations event and setup to talk to the public. I'll try to come up. Four, I've been using this setup in my car for a couple of months now. I find the GPS in the U600 to be a bit flaky. It works, particularly since the packet transmissions are based on the Yaesu, not the U600, but if you want to keep your map spot on (for your own situational awareness), you might want to use something else as the GPS source for APRSIS32... a USB GPS puck or a Bluetooth GPS device, for example. Every so often I glance down and see that the U600 has insufficient satellites for a fix. For what I use it for, it's not a big issue. For you, it could be a really big deal. As for your question about connecting this setup to the 100, I haven't done it but just last week one of the other commenters, sacul74, reported that he had made it work. You wouldn't of seen the comment because I just noticed that TH-cam flagged it as possible spam. I just cleared it. I'll ask him how he did it and hopefully we can add the instructions here.

    A note to those who may want to replicate this project in the future. Earlier this month my U600 stopped providing data via FreedomPop. Each time it would try to get on the network it would fail and would refer me to a webpage that I could of course not access, since I had no data. Well, I finally, installed the U600 on a computer in the house. When I got the webpage redirect, I rolled the computer in question to WiFi and refreshed the page. The message was a simple one form FreedomPop. "Your current plan is not enabled for 3G, click here for plans that are." I am positive that when I signed up for the plan that powers the U600 currently (Basic 500MB) that it was for 3G data and 3G ONLY, so I don't know what gives. The next cheapest plan that is listed with 3G access is $3.99 a month. Be advised if you're thinking about going this route.
    Not sure what my next step is. In the meantime, I've been running the tablet without Internet. As we talked about in the video, it will continue to display whatever the radio hears just fine.

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Bigglesworth, absolutely. Any packets your radio hears and decodes will be displayed without an internet connection. All the internet connection does is populate objects that are beyond the hearing of your radio and passes objects that you do hear to APRS-IS making you an IGate on wheels.

    First of all, thank you so much for the video. It's extremely helpful, concise and easy to understand. I just purchased an FTM-400DR over the weekend from HRO as part of their Black Friday promotion along with Yaesu's current Holiday Season Rebate which made it a no-brainer. I knew when I purchased it that the TNC isn't "fully" accessible to the user but successfully tested it with a Signalink USB using a Yaesu CT-164 cable to interface it to a Windows machine running UZ7HO's SoundModem. I'm wondering if you've thought about trying that route/setup with a Windows tablet running both UZ7HO and APRSISCE/32 and if a Windows tablet would have enough "horsepower" to do the softmodem for packet that way you could fully digipeat, IS to RF, etc.? Guess most Windows tablets only have a single USB 2.0 port so you'd have to use a USB hub to keep both the FreedomPop and Signalink USB connected to the tablet. - Thanks in advance!

      Thanks for the comment. Glad you found the video helpful. When I scrounge up some time again, the next video will be on reconfiguring the packet path specifications on the 400 in order send a message over a very long distance without flooding all the Digis along the way.
      Back to your question. No, I hadn't though about using a device like a Signalink to force the triggering of the PTT circuit in order to send third party objects, Digipeat, or to be a two way IGate. I have not run Sound Modem at the same time as APRSIS32, but I have run Dire Wolf at the same time and that worked fine. I've even run digital modes through Ham Radio Deluxe on that tablet before, so I'm reasonably certain it could handle the load. Interesting idea. It hasn't occurred to me.

    An update on the U600. I finally got a response from Freedompop. Apparently the free 500MB a month service is for 4G only. The U600 only does Wimax 4G, not LTE. So, as Sprint is sunsetting Wimax now, the U600 doesn't have a 4G option. If you get a U600 in the future, you'll have to pay for a 3G plan for it. The cheapest one is $3.99 a month.

    Excellent video Dallas. A quick question. Is there any benefit to connecting the radio to my computer using the ARPSIS32 program on my PC which is connected to the net? Will I see the same information duplicated if it's connected to the web and also getting data via RF on 144.390? Thank you. Vincent

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on your area. If there are holes in IGate coverage, you may see things on the RF side that aren't getting passed on to the Internet. In fact, you could be the IGate for that traffic and be part of the larger APRS infrastructure. Beyond that, I always think there is value to RF based APRS, especially in emergencies. It's basically an incredibly resilient radio based computer network. I use the Internet to augment the radio side when available, but fundamentally radio is still the backbone of this network.

      I'm not a total fan of the 400. I think the GPS sensitivity should be better. At the very least, they should have used a more common connector for the external GPS antenna so everyone isn't forced to make their own and hope it works. Occasionally, the touch screen goes wonky and insists I'm clicking somewhere that I'm clearly not. I went with it because I wanted a dual VFO rig with APRS integration. On rebate, it was within my range. I pine for the Kenwood radios that allow you to access the TNC for more than just receiving APRS packets... digipeating and Winlink, mostly. I'm a little annoyed that I can't send third party objects through the USB cable on this rig.

      +Kevin Corns, the 710 is an extremely popular APRS rig and I know lots of people have hooked it up to APRS software before. However, since I don't own one I can't walk you through the steps. I do know this. The TNC on the 710 is user accessible, so you would be able to transmit objects generated by the computer and not just receive them. This is a nice improvement over what the 400 offers.

But I see a problem....(1) no satalittes showing at bottom of page....(20) I dont see any movement of my call sign (WA6DDF-9) when I am on the road. ...I think it may be do to not having any of the setting in each of the catagories show at the top of the page....can you send me a list of what those settings should be? +Mike Sloan For some reason this message was caught in the spam filter but none of the others were. Anyway, the answer to this question is yes. Unfortunately, the tablet that I'm using here doesn't have GPS but it could be added. Also, it's worth noting that if you are stationary (like at Field Day) you could manually set your location on the map without the need for a GPS unit at all.

    Question: I have been off the air for 30+ years and just started again a few months back. I am finding a lot has changed over the years and need some help. I have the Yeasu 400 and would like to set it up. Can you give a list of things needed to buy to track? Remember I have been off the air for a long time and feel like a beginner so need info in easy terms lol.

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're just looking for vehicle tracking, you won't require any additional equipment beyond the 400. The tablet seen here just helps with visualization of packets received and the cellular device helps provide spot reports to APRS-IS on stations heard.

    • @buzzsah
      @buzzsah 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I am still trying to catch up with the new technology. So if I hear you right the 400 has all I need and if I hook it up to a laptop I should be ok? Does it work with google map?

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +buzzsah Not Google Maps. You'll have to use an APRS program for the packets to plotted on a map. APRSISCE32 is the program that is running on the tablet. It uses Offline Street Maps.

      The 400 does have a GPS, however, you can't push coordinates from the 400 to the client computer at the same time packets are being sent down the USB cable. At least not that I've found.

    can this setup also function as a tracker at the same time it is monitoring other station positions on the map.... you said data cant be sent from the tablet to the radio, so does this indeed exclude this setup from enabling you to act as a tracker simultaneously?..... there is no way to send out position reports ( tracking) from the ftm-400 while using this setup?, if thats true, it sounds like someone really goofed somewhere..... or if the radio wont receive data from the tablet, can the radio at leaast act as a tracker on its own while using this setup?

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 400 continues to beacon on its own even after the tablet is hooked up. The tablet is just "listening in" on what the radio hears. I just meant that you can't generate additional packets (club meeting here, power lines reported down here, repeater located here, etc) on the tablet and have the radio transmit it on the tablet's behalf.

    • @MikeG-js1jt
      @MikeG-js1jt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dallas Clements so you couldn't send a message (email, winlink) to another station from the tablet, but you could from the radio, which the radio can do anyway...yes?
      I heard rumors that yaesu might release a firmware updated to change this one way communication issue....if we want to call it an "issue"
      Thanks for ur replies by the way...

    • @dclements42
      @dclements42  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Sloan, that's correct. You can only send the messages from the radio. All the tablet is doing for you (pending any future firmware upgrade from Yaesu) is helping you see received APRS objects on the map and IGate them if you have internet on the tablet.

    • @dclements42

      Justin Jackson, as I understand it, it's one or the other. In the radio's menu, you have to specify what you want pushed through the cable to the computer... GPS data or packet data.

Just last night I had to open the case on mine to disconnect the battery to force a hard reset because it wouldn't respond to the power button. While the price is great, the product isn't bulletproof. There are five or so other companies making Windows tablets for more money, to include Dell and HP. I believe the next cheapest is $99 new. You may be able to grab a used one for a price comparable to the Winbook.
