      they also need to be a version of aprs on HF on 20m because I guarantee you many parts of the world don't have VHF did repeaters!

    Hey man, thanks for being such a positive and informative voice for the amateur radio hobby! Seriously, you are a great teacher, you're always positive and relaxed, and you really love the subject. It comes through in your videos, and I'm just stoked that people like you are out there. I also dove head-first into amateur radio after hearing about APRS for the first time, so it's cool to hear you talk about it as well!

    TLDR: Yes please cover more on APRS
    APRS is the reason I got the FT5D. It’s been amazing and I didn’t even know half of this. I’d love to learn to fully take advantage of APRS.
    I’ve been looking for better methods of staying safe while hiking with my young daughter. Cell service is never good enough.
    I’m definitely not getting out enough. Guessing I need to increase the skip/hop/repeater function lol. Looking at my map I think I need 2-3 hops to be sure I get to the “Internet” whatever that was called.
    Messaging my wife by sms when we get to a trail would be very helpful.
    I’ll definitely be looking for any older APRS videos. I now have an unused Baofeng laying around that I’d love to work APRS on. For fun or maybe as a backup. Idk. Sounds like the possibilities are crazy.
    Thanks for the video!

    Thanks very much for this guide Josh! I've been lucky enough to pick up one of the last of the TH-D74s, a 10 month old, still under warranty example. This video and the links provided will help me get onto APRS. I'm grateful to you.

    I was surprised to see that the APRS implementation in my VX-8DR seems almost easier. I thought it would have improved more. Makes me feel better that I am not missing out on much with my old model.

    What got me in to ham radio is needed communications in those parts of country that have no cell phone access, and being able to communicate when cell towers go down. As well as being able to listen to weather spotters during tornado/hurricane season. APRS is awesome for seeing where my other friends are in areas of no cell service. I personally don’t get the messaging part of it. Why? Why not just pic up the mic and talk! Lol

    you could do the same thing give your position and stuff, and also these talk can be used on a chair because the frequency bandwidth is narrow enough it's only 6.25 khz narrower than a AM signal which is 10 kilohertz wide, I do have a Kenwood D75A, and a Yaesu FT5D,

    I like aprs but it is dead around Here just weather becon a maybe 2 or 3 cars or maybe a ht once a few months. I thought I was not getting in. But then I got a digipeater setup and it did help but it is still dead I been in to it year and half and nothing changes so I am thinking of pulling the plug on it all.

    The terminology slide was very helpful. I'm old to RF and networking, but new to APRS. Things like "TNC" and "digipeat" make no sense without some definitions. 73.

    That new screen @47:35 is a bug IMO. The buttons don't work and block the message view. Hope Yaesu fixes it soon. Also, when entering numbers in a message the cursor does not auto advance. Really irritating.

    Wow there's a whole world out there happening that I didn't know about it. Some of the local "seasoned" hams have told me that packet radio is old hat from the 1980's. What they really mean is THEY have never used it since the 80's and APRS is alive and happening. Can I do this with a Yaesu FT65 if I buy that TNC controller thing?

  • @warrenpercell297

    I have 3 questions about APRS:
    1. What should I look for on my HT (Wouxon KG-UV8H) specs that it will work with the cable and TNC?
    2. Will this only work with digipeaters or will any local 2 meter repeater work for APRS?
    3. I'm looking at getting the TYT TH-9800 quad band mobile to use as a base station. How can I connect a TNC to this?

    • @macaklin0
      @macaklin0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can answer a second question. You can send an APRS signal on any frequency including a local 2-meter repeater in theory but there is no need because that repeater is made for people to speak on it and there are designated APRS frequencies with digipeaters tuned on them(for eg. USA 144.390, Europe 144.800 etc.) that local 2-meter repeater is not on one of them, so you would just bother other people and you couldn't exchange packets with other users because they are on APRS frequency and you are not. I hope you find this helpful, 73.

    Is APRS how gps radios (mostly referring to garmin rino 650 & 750 series radios) relay their own location between each other?

    I was given a Kenwood TH-D7. Interesting radio. Nice dual receive radio. Can also transmit data and voice at the same time. I used it to play with packet data (nice to have fully funtional TNC built-in). Plan on playing with APRS soon.

      Agree. Not 1200 chars. 1200 baud would be 120 chars / sec (8 bit char plus stop/start bits. )

    Some APRS radios, like the classic Kenwood D7 h/t's could only process single packets, which is all APRS called for.

      Keep in mind that you need a licence to transmit on the ham bands. Before you get a radio you should think about learning about ham radio and getting your licence.

    I’m still confused about messaging with APRS… And even with the FT5D we need an audio cable to connect to a tablet or that device? I totally didn’t understand adding text to your message like “winlink” why would you do that. Sounded like you were going to explain it but you got distracted… I’ll try to find that tablet video next. But I really need to be walked through all this. …I should really join your patron. And maybe actually talk in the discord group. (I hate talking to people, why am I interested in radios…)

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse

      You don’t need an audio cable with the ft5
      You can send messages outside the APRS system like Winlink by changing the destination of the message.

    I’m a huge fan of APRS also. I use my Ft3D and beacon when playing Sota, hiking or volunteering at Morton Peak Fire Tower and monitor 146.520 all day and call out under the wilderness protocol. But when not using ht to beacon I use my iPhone and beacon using aprs.fi for iOS. But my SSID is -5. Any big negatives using iPhone vs ht? I run a Yaesu 2980 while mobile

    Help please! I have a Ft 3 and it will not tx into aprs.fi. it will tx radio to radio but I'm not getting into the network. We have a digipeater at our club and tried tx while in the same room and still nothing on aprs.fi. all the settings are correct. Compared them to a working radio. What's wrong?

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This could really be a few reasons, without seeing the FT3 in person it is hard to say you have all the settings correct. Since you're not getting onto a digipeater. When you beacon are you getting a response from the digipeater? Is the digipeater/iGate working correctly?

    • @N4GNGGeraldGullion
      @N4GNGGeraldGullion 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse no I am not getting any response from the digipeater, but another radio with the same settings as mine, does get a response from the digipeater. When the digipeater beacons, my radio picks it up. I receive from other radios and they receive my beacon, just can't get into the network.
