Great video, probably the best I have seen on how to set up APRS. I like how you demonstrated each step and paired it with the number on the radio. Thanks and I look forward to more from your channel.
Thanks for your programming basics to get guys with the FTM400xdr up and going! I read so much on programming and so much seems to be written by engineers with way too much info I don't need to know. Get me up and running with the basics and I can go from there! Great vids!

thanks I was having issues trying to do this but I watched your video in the car stopping and starting step buy step and now its working great , thank you for this great video. KE8HAS
Thanks for the video. I did as you instructed. Different call signs popping up with alert noises. I turned the volume all the way down by I still hear sound when a new call sign show up on the screen. Is there a way to lower or turn off that noise as my radio receives a call sign? Also I do not see myself on the APRS map on Google except from my hotspot which is on 433.000MHZ and nothing on 144.390 MHz. Finally, I am not sure I see the point of APRS. I can track my family on the iPhone and text them as well. The radio is doing all the work even if I sleep or am dead.
I'm trying to get a set up just for the tracking aspect of it not to talk or anything. Do you have any recommendations that'd work well that I'd be able to connect to my computer in the car.
Your video was fantastic--right to the point. I setup my 400 in 2 minutes after watching your video--THANK-YOU. One small suggestion--you seem like a great guy, please consider changing your intro without the swearing. I turned your video on in front of my family, and it was a bit embarrassing.
Hey, nice video. Can you do one from the very beginning of how to program the FTM400 to transmit, set frequencies, program memories, how to get the most out of the radio, it's mic and other things, but all just the basics? Thanks,
I just bought a FTM 400 on a 30 day backorder and my question is. APRS is monitored on the B band leaving A band open for monitoring or talking. Can the A band display your Memory channels while running APRS on B band or does it have to be in VFO mode to work
The best you can do is enable aprs mute, then turn off all the notifications. Unfortunately you will still here the occasional beeps. Much fewer than factory settings.
@@GIBro-mm5dj you are correct, if you turn off the notifications, and turn down the volume on your bank you have APRS running you will hear only the beeps for when your radio transmits.
I also have the same radio you do How do you set it up so someone can QSY to your frequency and if you have 4 different text message well it send all four of them or just one at a time
Aprs can be used for a few different things. The main one is location status. So whether you are tracking a vehicle or sending out telemetry/weather data. You can monitor that information remotely. You can also send short messages, texts, and even emails via aprs.
Is the APRS frequency standard throughout the country? If not how do you choose a APRS frequency? In your video you did not explain, you just stated a frequency you would use and loaded it. I’m in PNW and do not know local APRS frequencies. TIA.
Just a heads up: On my FTM-400XDR, APRS MUTE, mutes the entire B-Band. So, if you ever want to scan your B-Band channels...you’ll never hear anything. In addition, APRS, VOICE ALERT TONE SQL places a tone on every simplex frequency located in the B-Band channels. So if you channel over to say 2m calling, you won’t hear anything..because there’s a tone on it. What I’m trying now, is to manually place a 100 sql tone on my APRS channel. This should allow for voice call and mute the data. I dunno, we’ll see
@@GIBro-mm5dj I just need the operating software either Windows or dos too much hassle to download by my means if not I'll just sell the tnc' s and radios and just have if only hf capability
Very good video. Thank you!!! I have renewed interest in getting my FTM100 going in APRS. A couple things are still a bit fuzzy: Is there some sort of initial registration involved like there is in DMR? Also, isn’t the system dependent on capable repeaters? So I assume that means if my area doesn’t have the ability, it won’t work? Unless it works radio to radio...sorry for all the questions.
There is no initial registration when using APRS. To get your beacon on the internet and viewable at aprs.fi, you would have to either be heard by an igate or by a digipeater that can reach an igate.
