At the slats that pull out. Maybe consider adding a stop so it won’t pull out all the way. Doesn’t have to be at all but maybe in the middle and the two ends.
I enjoy watching your vids because you explain it in a way that non-woodworkers/carpenters can understand. Your projects instill confidence that anyone can build the pieces in the vids. Keep it up!
This is exactly what I had in mind for my son’s bedroom! He currently has a queen size bed on a big bulky bed frame, but he needs more room. This will be perfect. Thank you for your very thorough tutorials!
I have been checking this design out to use for guests. I have a small house, so I think this would do the trick. As usual, love watching your builds and really appreciate your amazing imagination.
This crazy method you kept going through for fixing the bars was actually not the least crazy at all!!! It made me realize how to smartly get that done without a whole lot of measuring and probably false marks and slant bars that would get stuck pulling out the bed! Thumbs up!
Nice job I was looking for something like this for my cabin. Your instructions were easy. Might I suggest you put a 1x4 on the underside of your pull out slats that way it won't pull out when you fully extend it. Other then that great job.

Brooooooooooooo! Relocated for graduate school and have been searching for four MONTHS tryna find a store-bought apartment-size sleeper sofa but have been SO disappointed with the designs and costs and availability of what's being sold. Gave up on stores finally and just started the process of figuring out how I can make what I need for myself. Your video is the first I came across and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this is excellent instructional video. I'm filled with hope about what's possible
This is an excellent transitional bed from youth to teen. Several years ago, I built a 5 feet high platform bed for a granddaughter with a play area underneath. Two more granddaughters later, we are in need of space as the oldest is growing out of the playroom stage. This bed conversion would fit well underneath the existing platform and accommodate the two younger tykes handily in one room. Fast forward 9 years, and the youngest will inherit the bunk with an underneath couch as the oldest moves on to college... You come up with some very convenient ideas for confined spaces Glen. Thanks.. and keep the videos coming!
You did a great job on this. The carpet makes it a little difficult, but I wonder if the slide was built out in more of a box with casters on the bottom, if it wouldn't roll a little better. It would also mean you could talk out the middle support in the sofa section and add a 2x4 to the back end of the pullout, so it wouldn't pull all the way off. We're going to work from this design and make one for our cabin. Thanks for posting!
Your designs are simple and any layman can follow, easy... yet neat and spacious in space management. Keep up the good job of making and sharing (teaching) with your videos. Stay Blessed!!
Thanks for all you do. I got sick w Covid, lost my job and my wife is leaving me. These videos offer an awesome escape and give me hope for my next life. Appreciate you sir.
Just did the final assembly today. Overall a nice product. My main motivation to use the design was I don’t have much time right now so is an easy quick solution. I do have it setting on felt feet, which helps the front in sliding, as well as an arm on both sides. We are using a futon. In the short term I am using additional pillows when in the upright position as a 90 degree back is a little uncomfortable. Since I have carpentry and metal working experience, am going to modify the back so it is angled and that angle is adequately supported. I think it will compliment your original design. Well done!
I absolutely love this idea! I would use it with a futon cushion/mattress. It can be folded so that half if it is a sofa back and then pulled down flat for the bed option. Thank you for sharing this wonderful design- I really hope we can build our own version that’s very similar!
I was fixing on building a sofa/screen room deal for my office and this pops up on the feed. It looks so good but my favorite part is the pride I would have knowing my family uses something I built myself. Not to mention the envy others could have if they see it and are blown away. Pride and Envy, oh yeah!
Me too, and the reason i watch DIY is to build something for my wife and son one day. So that they would feel proud that i have done something on my hands for them... I'm a busy guy that run 4 business of my own and everything we need we just purchase, so to build something on my hands will be kind of unique for them.
Love this! It's perfect! I'll be building this for my 13 year old! Keeping it in Twin position, but I love that she can convert it to a sofa, if she wants, when she has friends over. It can transition to a guest room when she grows up and moves out, or she can take it with her for college, and move up to a full if she wants. Right now she's want to ditch her traditional type queen size for more bedroom space. Thanks so much for sharing your talents and skills!
Always like your projects. They look great, aren't overly complicated and you are really honest about mistakes and mentioning things to avoid doing. Keep it up! Big fan!
I have a Tylosand with the sliding system. Nice to see it built. You can store the linens, blow up mattress under the slide out. Make the stay back slide out liftable...this is how my Tylosand works.
ha ha ha that is going to be me in a few weeks hopefully. I am aiming to purchase a battery powered portable jigsaw soon and go nuts with wooden projects. Dust and shit everywhere.
Bought the plans and altered them to be a twin size bed that slides out into a king size bed . I am so thankful for this overly descriptive video and the plans to work off of ! Thank you !! I wish I could post a picture of my results ! It looks awesome and I love it !
Thanks for this video!! I watched it a few years ago... and just now realised that I can modify the couch that my great grandfather built, just a bit, to be as useful as this one that you made!! Whoohoooo!!
Very functional, attractive design, simple pull out method. Lots of great tips and links. And very few fancy tools needed. I wish I had know about this when furnishing my daughter's apartment.
I seriously can't thank you enough. I have been looking for affordable furniture everywhere, and everyone else online seem to think $1000 is affordable. I have PTSD that causes constant, severe seizures and can't function well outside my home. I live off of $800 a month and have been sleeping on the floor for a year. Not anymore! Still a lot of money for lower class folks like myself, but it's doable, comfortable, and looks good!
I have a small home and no place for a guest to sleep. This is perfect. Compared to what I would pay for a (quality) store bought futon, I can use the extra money for more projects. This video was easy to understand and I appreciated the tips (do’s and don’ts) Do you have any suggestions for turning a (cheap) 3 season porch into an extra (insulated) bedroom?
You can make that patio into a beautiful room by using 1/4 inch plywood sheets to enclose the whole walls. Then frame a window and bam. ☺ If you cant afford to do it all at 1 time enclose the bottom half all the way around the room and add the rest as you can afford it. Thats what im fixing to do. You can add a beautiful storage area off tje back of your house the same way too!
You could also add a drawer under the part that pulls out to store linens. Also foam from joannes is a great option for the seat. Cut to fit and cover with safety pins attaching fabric to the bottom (out of site), or if you're handy, sew a cover (ain't nobody got time for that). Very cool build sir!!!
This is a fantastic build. Perhaps it can be fine tuned for storing a single mattress underneath, or even a double, which could bend up into be used as the back cushions even?
My immediate thought reading your comment: img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/2017-06/26/15/enhanced/buzzfeed-prod-fastlane-03/enhanced-16591-1498503770-4.png?downsize=715:*&output-format=auto&output-quality=auto
My son is 6'5'. the closed in ends would be an issue. This would be great for a custom size bed, just have foam cut to the right size, make covers and sheets for them. Too bad dimensions weren't given, but people can look up standard size beds for twin, full, queen etc. Not CA King because they are longer. Then make a coffee table with storage for bedding and pillows.
I feel like you could probably buy two twin size foam matrasses and use one for the sofa cousin and cut the other one up for back and arm rest. Might have to take that into account when building thou. Great project, I like how you show that it is doable even without tons of fancy tools
Teresia Lidin, exactly right! And then keep a memory foam topper and the rest of the bedding rolled up and stashed in a trunk or closet during the day. (The topper will help make the gaps less noticeable.)
Notice the zigzag dowel hole pattern along the lumber. Also, salting a wet glued joint prevents the wet joint from slipping.... another great video Glen - thanks ALSO.. love the lights... I'm gonna make use of those down the back of my floor standing speakers....
As a bush-rat (no road, off grid)Alaska homesteader this is perfect! Much easier to snowmachine in lumber than furniture---- and cheaper. Love the clean lines Scandinavian look!!
Nice work man. I think you are like me, Like to work alone. Take out the 2x4 in the middle so you can put a stop so the sliding side don't fall off. The other side is the same size and doesn't have a support in the middle.
Really nice DIY bed work. My Buy it yourself wooden bed has a similar surface and also has big drawers below the mattress/slatted frame to store bedclothes, underwear and more.
Didn't know you do bed. Too got to see what else you got with creative ideas you just help me to accomplish what i needed to help or how to come out with what I couldn't have before
nice design. thanks. suggestion. 1.find the cushions first then do your measurements for the sofa. 2. have your lumber yard cut everything to size. not that expensive & you save time and no mess to clean up. 3. put stoppers (engle irons) on the bottoms of the planks that pull out so you don't pull them off the track. 4. put teflon sliders under the pull out piece for easy slide and no marks on the floor.
The trick is that it's designed to a bed's dimensions, not arbitrary cushion sizes. If it's to fit a full bed then the sofa seat has to be at least half the width of a full bed. If a twin bed, at least half the width of that bed. There's a little fudging possible in both cases, as the seat can be a a little bigger with a shorter slide so if you luckily find cushions bigger than half your target bed size...
This is freaking awesome. Im definitely making my own bed/couch instead of buying one. Talk about quality, price, and thought! Thank you for the plans and ideas brother!
I keep accidentally finding your videos. But everything I find is just so perfectly my speed. You just have such amazing craftsmanship on such a real, human level.
Nice work, but i had a suggestion if you put a stop (a piece of wood) at the bottom of the slats when pulling the maximum extension for the bed the slats would never fall off until you pick it up.
Love this idea for a vintage camper I'm currently working on. I'll repurpose 2 fairly new twin xl foam mattresses, cut 1 in half lengthwise, and use it for the back cushion. Depending on the size I cut, I can go either full xl or queen. With slight modification, I believe I can also add a twin bed lift to it and have much needed storage under. Many thanks for your design and clear instruction!
The problem with that is the sliding section has to pass the center seat support beam. You could put ears on the sliding section slats that sit in the spaces between slats, creating a T shape, and put stops on the top side of the front support beam. Only improvement I would add to the design.
yeah, just three pieces of wood on three slides and make small cutouts in the middle support beam and put a screw on each side of the cutout, no strenght is lost but it can slide out way further without being afraid it moves away at night, the stops doesn't need to be high, two, three centimeters are enough, the weight from the top keeps them where they are. But man that thing looks so nice, I think google read our minds, I'm planing all the time to make my own couch, but I can't remember searching for tutorials and now I get this one recomended xD And it is even better, this way I could have living and sleeping room in one and use the second one as working room and closet.
Thanks 👍 this is the first reasonable build a beginner like me can attempt. My sofa will be for a Tiny House so I cannot have shelf open to side. How can I enclose it and put a flip open top like a chest? I will use this to store linens. Any chance you will build a sofa chair in the future? One that flips over when guests come.
foam products inc. ,in montgomery ,al you can get custom cut foam for beds- sofas -and any thing with foam cushions for this project you could get a spit mattress that coverts into sofa cushions --I Have work for the co.about 39 years .your build is great for the front board maybe some small chair slides for the carpet would work .
I just put this as a comment (at the end). You'd have to work out the measurements to see if it would work but it would be a permanent solution for a regular use bed that would take up no more space. You could just store the pillows and bed linen underneath. Thats fantastic! If you want an idea for the cushions you can buy mattress density foam/sponge I don't know what you call it in the US we can buy it from large fabric shops though you might have to go somewhere else for ones that size. You can get the foam for the base cut to the width and length of the sofa/couch when its closed. You can then get the back cushion cut in one piece also hopefully the height that fills in the rest of the bed when it's pulled out. Then either sew cushion covers for the foam out of upholstery fabric or get a seamstress or upholsterer to do it for you. If you go for removable cushion covers made from machine washable fabric you will be able to wash them. It would probably also be considerably more comfortable than putting an air bed on and make even the cushions part of the pull out bed. Just don't go for foam that is too soft or not dense enough. Hopefully the people selling it can advise you I don't understand density My mum and dad have a foam mattress (not memory foam) and it is over 30 years old and has only started to get less comfortable the last few years. Its been vacuumed steam cleaned and all sorts many times.
@@smithy4121 You could use a futon cover. When the bed slides out the futon will fall. Or... You could fold the futon for extra cushion when you're sitting and then unfold it when you lay. That might give a seam in the cushion though.
I've been looking for something like this for my apartment! However, I think adding some storage capability underneath the sofa/bed would be extremely helpful. Especially for me since I have no storage/cabinets and my closet is tiny!
I was thinking the same thing. A simple plywood L on the floor and attached to three (left, right, center) of the boards. If you do that put 1/4 inch thick by one wide running rails under the box for ease of movement. That or casters.
AWESOME build!!!! You did a fantastic job both showing what you were doing and explaining it as you went along, and the finished product looks BEAUTIFUL.
Outstanding job my darling now you can relax and I have to find someone who can make this beautiful sofa bed for me till than you enjoy have to say your hard works pay❤️
I would've lowered the slates basically an inch in a half off the floor so the "cushion" can be a folded cushion. So it would fold into seating and then unfolded to make a twin/queen bed. That way the cushion can be pretty thick and have space so it wont overlap the backboard of the couch. So it will basically be a folded matress sitting inside(the lost underneath space) so there wouldn't be lost storage space underneath. If that made any sense 😐

2. have your lumber yard cut everything to size. not that expensive & you save time and no mess to clean up.
3. put stoppers (engle irons) on the bottoms of the planks that pull out so you don't pull them off the track.
4. put teflon sliders under the pull out piece for easy slide and no marks on the floor.
I'm so glad this came across my feed! You did an awesome job with your presentation and your build... Kudos to you!💕💕
This is freaking awesome. Im definitely making my own bed/couch instead of buying one. Talk about quality, price, and thought! Thank you for the plans and ideas brother!
Great video , You are a professional. and having the right tools for the job a great compliment. Congratulations. thanks for posting!
I keep accidentally finding your videos. But everything I find is just so perfectly my speed. You just have such amazing craftsmanship on such a real, human level.
Smart, really smart...keep posting those great ideas.
Nice work, but i had a suggestion if you put a stop (a piece of wood) at the bottom of the slats when pulling the maximum extension for the bed the slats would never fall off until you pick it up.
Dhanraj Lota same thought
Two years later and this is still interesting.
I like the design - nice, simple & very practical. I like tutorial even better - very well explained
You know how far deep you are in the TH-cam DIY world when you start telling yourself that you could TOTALLY make this
Considering I watched videos on DIY banquets and totally made my own, so yeah I could make it.
Mimi Johnson okay, cool?
you should put pieces of wood under the slots so it wouldnt fall off if you pulled it too hard
diego arias was thinking the same thing 🙌🏻
Same thought, wood or angle iron pieces to create a stop.
Agreed! My thoughts exactly
Love this design! I wish I had someone to build this for me.
Very nice. Don't know if I missed any parts of the video but did you add stops on the slacks for the pullout to keep from pulling out too far?
foam products inc. ,in montgomery ,al you can get custom cut foam for beds- sofas -and any thing with foam cushions for this project you could get a spit mattress that coverts into sofa cushions --I Have work for the co.about 39 years .your build is great for the front board maybe some small chair slides for the carpet would work .
I love this built!!!! I just have one question. if I already have a small space, when I use it as a Sofa, where do I put the mattress?
2 single mattress In a double duvet cover sewn down the middle, then just pull out to use?
Is this in swedish? Duvet?
We say duvet in the UK, it’s pronounced doo-vey
Great to see some real, solid DIY furniture. Thanks for all your effort
I like how you're showing the use of construction lumber to build with. A lot of people think you can't use it. I like that design a lot
Very nicely done, something even I can make for my family room, great job, thanks for posting.
Man, you're very talented!
Ficou ótimo seu projeto de sofá!! Vou me inspirar a fazer o meu assim também. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for keeping this handtool friendly!
best solutions for a small spaces. very cozy, i love it to much. thanks for showing.
Love your design! I'm definitely going to build this sofa bed! Thank you for sharing your designs!
I've been looking for something like this for my apartment! However, I think adding some storage capability underneath the sofa/bed would be extremely helpful. Especially for me since I have no storage/cabinets and my closet is tiny!
I was thinking the same thing. It seems to me it should be quite easy to create a storage space down there.
I was thinking the same thing. A simple plywood L on the floor and attached to three (left, right, center) of the boards. If you do that put 1/4 inch thick by one wide running rails under the box for ease of movement. That or casters.
Ikea got you covered. m2.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemnes-daybed-frame-with-3-drawers-white-30349329/
this is sooo cool! youtube recommendation finally getting it right 👍🏻
AWESOME build!!!! You did a fantastic job both showing what you were doing and explaining it as you went along, and the finished product looks BEAUTIFUL.
Man you are a professional, I am not. I have seen a few videos you have posted and I am amazed of your talent.
Super cute build👍😜😁
I'm only just coming across your channel and OMG! YOU ARE A LEGEND! Thank you for sharing such amazing creations ❤
Fantastic BUILD!! I will be downloading the plans!!
Thank you
This is a great design. So much nicer than what I have seen. I will build this. Thank you for sharing.
You know I have been considering buying a Casper mattress, this may be just the solution for a support. Thanks..."your the man!!!"
Parabéns mano muito bom esse projeto bem executado, você e de fato um profissional.
Nice project. I'm wondering about the dowels used, is stronger then say using deck screws?
You are gifted. May God bless you!
I appreciated your talent and your work!
can you train me?
how can i learn from you while in Djibouti?
