    Paying Trane prices on a compressor and rotolock's for a builders model unit that would be crazy. Just replace the condenser and be done with it.

    Thats an interesting fault Steve! Don't think i ever seen the nut rust out before, but the rotalocks here are more like a king valve, they rust where the copper is soldered in, i keep a few in stock.

    • @stevenlavimoniere
      @stevenlavimoniere  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      heavydiesel trane came up with this design and i see a lot of leaks at them dumb idea .for sure

  • @Tedybear315
    @Tedybear315 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if I'll see the response: Would it help these units if the 'rotolock' had a coating of either fluid film or grease applied to the fittings once a year as a maintenance? Fluid film has been used for years to prevent rust and corrosion with automotive applications for decades... Just wondering if that would help extend the lift of the units.

  • @nomebear
    @nomebear 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I lived on the Gulf of Mexico. I think that power spikes were an issue, but no matter what the brand, no matter the maintenance schedule, we were lucky to get 5 years out of a compressor.

    If you can live in a nice house like that.....you can buy a new dry charged condenser. I wouldn't want to attempt that roto lock removal and replacement. I know my luck...it would leak for sure! Your luck might be better than mine Steve.

    how can you have only two outdoor units (condensers?) and 4 zones?
    i always thought you had to have an outdoor compressor (or is it condenser?) for every zone
    or are there two air handlers on each outdoor unit ?
    this is interesting

      steven lavimoniere When we have to buy OEM Trane parts for repairs we "pay heavily" for the parts. Special motor shaft sizes, factory draft inducer motors, etc. that you have to buy from them or try to "reinvent the wheel" to get an aftermarket part to work. In my world "it's the cost of doing business," but for service guys like yourself who resell the parts at a mark up, the customer must feel like they are being raped!

  • @carloscaballero5001
    @carloscaballero5001 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You pay for the reliability of a Trane. Sure it sucks parts are more money. A new compressor and roto-locks would fix that issue. Truthfully Trane's are engineered just a little better than the rest in my opinion but that's none of my business.... thanks for the video lav.

      justin henning i do not believe its a salt water issue water is like 1/2 mile aways . and location of condensers are on back of house in a alcove .

    • @wessonsmith1373
      @wessonsmith1373 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1/2 mile from any body of salt water presents a serious concern. Having lived and worked in the trades in such an environment for over 4 decades, has afforded me more than ample experience, allowing me to speak intelligibly about the topic. I have seen numerous occurrences where the longevity of items have been seriously diminished due to exposure to salt air. A/C Condensers (multiple makes and models), entry doors, joist hangers, galvanized fasteners, etc. etc. have failed to thrive. The moisture that settles out of the air in the evening has salt in it. When there is an on shore wind, it brings in salt. As we know all too well, Nor Easters drive salt laden air on shore at a tremendous volume.Marine grade stainless steel and other higher grade metals are designed to last in such an environment. If I found myself Discrediting any one particular product or manufacturer without accounting for it's Ambient environment, then I would find myself a fool. As mentioned multiple times by other individuals Rust was Definitely A factor that led to the demise of this unit. This response was not written in disrespect to any one particular individual. People look to internet sources, i.e. reviews and videos. both personal and technical. It is only fair that they be presented with accurate information in order for them to make intelligent well informed decisions. There Absolutely are products out there that will stand up to this environment. They just come at a higher cost..unfortunately..

    Seen many rotalocks rust through ... see a lot of them blowing charge from where the aluminum coil turns to copper both on bad joints and rub through ... never understood that connection with heat shrink around it ... I have over 75 goodman heat pumps and condensers out in the field and all but two been running solid with no problems ... I love how everyone bashes Goodman but I've ripped out more aluminum spiney fun junker coils than any copper tube aluminum fin and replaced with goodman even miss match runs better than that trane American Standard junk

    So what lower part of the compressor was leaking? You pointed to what sounded like rotolock, i see the compressor oil. And ya it would lose it's R22 charge, buying a new outdoor unit is always expensive. Is that train outdoor unit R22?

    • @stevenlavimoniere
      @stevenlavimoniere  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matchbox201000 yes it was r22 ,and yes buying a new unit is pricey . if the guy wants cooling he will have to pay the cash to get it fixed

    • @Matchbox201000
      @Matchbox201000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seen the leak in the rotolock when you zoomed in with the camera, and i seen the nitrogen test. It was holding it's pressure, i think he would need to save up the money. And just buy a new outdoor unit, because fixing that rotolock. It just might leak still, oh and i seen what looked liked four thermostats? Or was it just three, so i was thinking he had four outdoor units. And sorry about my auto-correct it spelled trane the wroung way.

    Always gotta keep an eye on the dehumidifiers, My family up north went through 2 of them, both had rusted out the drain pans and wrecked a hardwood floor (twice). When going after the maker (Kenmore) they where told the lawsuit would have to be done in China, as that's where the maker is. Clearly a bunch of B/S as sears didn't want to deal with it.
    It finally hit the insurance company and their lawyers went after Sears. No wonder they folded like a cheap camera....

    It's only my opinion, but that compressor might have alot of bearing wear because of oil starvation because the R22 charge left in the system was 't brining oil back to the compressor. I didn't catch it, but was the compressor ever running?

      steven lavimoniere Lennox is not a laugh. Goodman is the one you should be laughing about. Lennox has the most efficient and most quite units on the market today. We're talking about 25 SEER condensers and %98 AFUE furnaces and air handlers.

    • @crapmusstank6558
      @crapmusstank6558 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Boston lol Lennox may claim to be efficient but all the new stuff is garbage. I had one customer have to change his evap coil 3 times within 4 years, and their varriable speed end bells are the most moisture sensitive thing I've ever seen, a drop of water from a clogged drain, or a drip of sweat from brow and they are toast!!

    • @AustinAirCo
      @AustinAirCo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Boston The best comes down to proper installation. Brand name matters very little these days as many manufacturers have facilities south of the border. The difference between brands is nothing more than flashy advertising campaigns. What is proper installation? "It's invisible to the untrained eye." ~and there you go.

    I can not believe people can blame a Trane unit for it being rusted on the OUTSIDE of a component.... so are you saying it would have rusted no matter what the environment was ?? And other units would not have rusted in the same environment? .... even if that had been a premium line and not a construction grade line unit, the steel would have still rusted in that environment there. The roto-lock Climatuff is now gone anyway as we no longer build recip. compressors.

      I understand, but, the seal is nor contingent upon the thread condition unless they are rotted off. The seal is made at the teflon gasket. I understand just like a flare is sealed at the face of the flare, because of our lack of faith in these seals we tend to use Nylog or Leak Lock as a back up, I do the same. I'm trying to get out of that habit. It's hard to break. as an experiment, I made a bad flare to purposely leak, and nylogged the flare nut, refrigerant had no problem getting through the sealant. The proper technique is to put refrigerant oil on the face of the flare. when its copper to steel, use copper flare gaskets, or double flare.
