Dude. Alice in Chains with Layne Staley were amazing. Lots of great songs to check out. I highly recommend Down in a Hole. Layne's passing was a tragic loss to the rock world.

Jerry is still there and he was every bit as much Alice In Chains as Layne (lead guitar/vocals) so I highly encourage supporting them. I bought his solo album, Degradation Trip, back in HS my sophomore year. Angel Eyes is the first song that springs to mind, check it out. He's certainly not Layne on the vocals but he's not bad.
It always makes me laugh a little bit when reactors immediately rewatch the first "YEAHHHHH!!!" Moment only to see there are 5 more of them directly after it. But it IS a wow moment. One of the best live vocal rock performances of all time.
Layne Stanley is one of the saddest stories in music in my opinion. Interesting introduction to the band. Usually people get snagged by Down in a Hole or other songs on Dirt.
All (most) of the original 'grunge' era frontmen are just one giant sad story. Layne hits different because everybody watched him fall apart for years but nobody could do anything but watch him fade away.

Grunge is a beautiful tragic rabbit hole that I hope you dive into. Alice in Chains - Rooster, Down in a Hole, Sickman, Would?, Man in the Box; then you have Pearl Jam, Nirvana waiting in the wings. Lovely reaction to this, Layne's voice is amazing. They also had an offshoot called Mad Season, supergroup with Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees members, very emotional songs, Layne sings there as well. Layne Staley was (and will always be) one of the best singers in rock history. His range and passion was unmatched but he went too young. Their 1st single ever is called "We Die Young" and was probably an omen of what was coming. They're one of my fav bands ever and will always love them. "Rain When I Die" is my personal favorite but they have so many absolute jewels.
Agreed 💯 %. I feel strongly about Rain When I Die, honestly was my first favorite Chains song. I live in the Seattle area, the day it was made public about Layne's death- it did rain part of that day.
Imagine having never heard of this genre and never heard of AIC and the first thing you see and hear is this version of this song... I wish I could have that... Though to be honest, listening to this one live still always gives me the chills. RIP beautiful soul and singer Layne 🤍
That's why even Metallica loved them. I also loved the connection that Layne and Maynard James Keenan had. When you see old footage of them onstage together you can TOTALLY sense the bro-mance. I would've LOVED to hear Layne & Maynard team up much more and perform each other's songs, similar to how Trent Reznor & David Bowie did. It would've been epically amazing to hear Laynes vocals do Tool, like 'Push It' & hear Maynard do 'Brother' or even this track. What I'd give to experience a reality where this was all possible!
My absolute favorite thing about Layne was the fact he encouraged the band to participate. He urged Jerry to write and sing and he embraced the contributions. Amazing. So many times it’s the in fighting and jealous paranoia that hampers great music.

Layne is my favorite vocalist to ever grace this planet. Love AIC, loved him in Mad Season. One of the best to ever do it. RIP Layne. You were a once in a lifetime experience for sure.
Alongside Tool Alice in Chains was a very big part of my life in the early to mid '90s, he had a voice like no other and their gritty/angry/ some might say depressing style got me through some really difficult times in my own life during that period. Their music expressed so much of my own chaotic emotions back then. I love Man in the Box and so many more of their songs. Rain When I Die, Down in a Hole, Rooster, Angry Chair, so much great stuff.
And Maynard and Layne were friends. Both bands have spent time as my favorite. Just in case you weren't already aware, you can find versions of Man in Box and Them Bones with Maynard on vocals. There also is a live version of Layne singing along with Maynard on Opiate. Maynard actually really surprised me by how close to Layne he was able to sound.
Layne and Maynard had an awesome bro-mance I would've loved to see develop further and would've really really loved to see them exchange vocal performances of each other's work.
Glad you dug this. It's a powerhouse performance. AiC have a lot of great tracks. Others have mentioned Down In A Hole (both the studio version and MTV Live Unplugged are great) but you could also check out Would?, Dam That River, Them Bones, Rain When I Die, Junkhead, (pretty much anything off Dirt), Nutshell, We Die Young, I Stay Away, Grind, Again... The list goes on.
Saw them with stone temple pilots open opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers and stood off to the side by the bass player as I played back then, I could literally feel Lane’s vocals in my chest over the bass player. He had a raw power I’ve not heard since.
So jealous. I'd have loved to see Aic in their prime. Sadly it wasn't till I was older that I really fully experienced & fell in love with Chains. Shitty thing is I've lived in the Seattle area since months after Kurt died. I never got to see STP either. Saw Chili peppers in 1995 or 1996.
@@Sindollx666x I was blessed to have grown up in that era of music and seen some amazing concerts like Pantera open for White Zombie which is still to this day one of the best I’ve ever heard live. Saw every Slayer concert since Reign in Blood till the finale tour. One band I regret never getting a chance to see was Dark Angel. I was fan of theirs since their first album but never got the chance. I did get to see Nirvana but it was a horrible show. Kurt sounded like crap. Sound garden too and Chris sounded like crap which was disappointing to me back in the day. But that’s live lol
@AzViking69 I was lucky too. My mom fronted a rock band before I was born. She was a rocker my whole childhood. Started taking me to concerts when I was 5. I saw the Moody Blues, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Skid Row (when they were band new!) Aerosmith, and Skid Row again, moody blues, the monkees, and countless others! I cried when I couldn't go see Motley Crue at 6. They were playing The Monsters of Rock festival and mom had to explain to me what "pit tickets" were, and how I would DIE .
@AzViking69 Pantera & Zombie holy eff that's awesome. I forgot they toured together. My mom got me into Zombie. I did a vocal cover of Pantera's Cemetery Gates not too long ago. I believe it's up on my channel.
This song showcases Laynes amazing range. They have so many other great songs which actually have some amazing harmonies sung with the guitarist and co-vocalist Jerry Cantrell. Cantrell wrote a great song entitled "The Rooster" that was about his fathers time in the Vietnam war. The rooster is a nickname his father had been given. Other amazing songs are "Would?", "Sludge factory", "Nutshell", "No excuses", "Heaven Beside you", "Rain When I Die", "Down in a Hole", "Man in a box", "Angry Chair", "Sea of Sorrow", "Brother", and "I Stay away." They also had an amazing MTV Unplugged set they performed of many of these songs that rivaled Nirvana's unplugged set in how they reworked these songs into new pieces. Layne also later fronted another band that produced one album "Above". It was called "Mad Season" and was a supergroup comprised of members of the grunge bands of the time. Some great songs were "River of Deceit", "Long Gone Day", "I don't know anything", and "I'm above".
I love AIC and I'm glad you're jumping in. Layne was so amazing! I would like to suggest checking him out with the band Mad Season with the song Wake Up. It will blow you away.
Oh man, I didn't expect to catch some AIC on this channel! Hell yeah. As a zillion others have probably noted, you're checking out a legendary band right now in Alice in Chains - Literally, AIC was one of "The Big 4" (although 4 really isn't enough at all to account for the grunge movement that was happening at the time) of what became known as "grunge". In no particular order, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam are the 4 powerhouses of not only the West Coast grunge movement, but all four of them were literally ALL FROM SEATTLE, and all 4 of them doing their thing in the same space. Despite being from the same city at the same time, each of the Big 4 have an incredibly distinct sound perhaps most characterized by their each-incredible frontmen, each band really breaking through the wall at the time and making a massive connection with people then and still. As you can tell in the fashion, the hair, the vocal styles, grunge was born as a bit of a rejection to the Rock and social style that popularly preceded them. When you think of any other genre you might be intimately familiar with, and you think of the PILLAR artists that represented the groundbreaking and iconic movement in their respective space, Alice in Chains is one of the 'grunge peers' in that echelon. I spent this comment writing not just about AIC but about the movement and their peers because really, they're all connected in this. If you liked Alice in Chains here, you absolutely need to hear more Alice in Chains, but you also AB-SO-LUTELY need to hear some of the other three as well. Like, without question. Technically unrelated to 'grunge', but Tool's groundbreaking EP "Opiate" was happening around the same time, absolutely in similar circles, venues, and crowds. You're tapping into it now, man. Catching up to an incredible time in rock history that means so much more to people that are quite still alive, that defined so much of our youth, attitudes, feelings, representation, and paths still. These bands literally paved the way, and that way was absolutely off the path at the time.
Layne let his pain flow through his brain.......you feel his vocals...such a humble caring guy , he was a human piano , the best and will never be forgotten
Layne's pain was from his drug habit. His songs radiated that pain, it's pure sadness we lost a talent like him. My roots are from Seattle, when Layne died I could not believe it. Our great loss.
And his pain was also due to Demri, his ex fiance. I truly believe her death in 1996 was a major nail in his coffin-even though it was still years before he passed. The last time Mike Starr went to spend time with him (just before he died) Layne told Mike that he saw Demri (her ghost) I believe she was coming to help him cross over, because he was dying.

The great thing about the singer is not only can he hit the notes, but he can sustain them and continuously hit them. I would’ve loved for him to make it and see how far they go.

I know AIC gets hella copyright striken, but some of their stuff gets through. If possible I rec “I stay away”. I like most AIC songs but “I stay away” is one of the few songs that evokes real feelings for me. It’s hard to explain how the song makes me feel but maybe wistful, melancholic, and something resembling nostalgia even tho it’s not a song that’s nostalgic for me. Idk it just has a feel to it that is emotional. AIC’s catalog (w/ Layne) isn’t long so there isn’t a huge discography to go through, but they were an incredible band. Super evocative musically and Layne’s vocals are prob some of my all time fav. I’m a sucker for rasp in a voice and soulfulness, and Layne had both qualities.
There's definitely some crossover in grunge and your current favorite band, Tool. Since you love Tool, and you're familiar with Pink Floyd - think: Tool is to Grunge as Pink Floyd is to rock. An advanced hyper technical and artistic formulated version of the base genre.

Masterful pacing , giving the song the room to breath and explode with dynamics. The vocals were fkn amazing. His voice was like sandpaper sanding down any rough edges, so smooth. If you stood in front of him you might find yourself bald from your getting your hair blown away.
I've been in love with AIC for over 30 years. Very few singers invoke that feeling of pain like Layne. Sad to say it doesn't get much happier than this in much of his music.

Thank you for having the fortitude to examine something different. I admire your honesty and open mindedness. I have been an AiC fan since 1991 and had the good fortune of seeing Layne perform twice. This is probably my favorite recorded version of Love, Hate, Love…and you are absolutely correct on all of your points. One bit of trivia you may not know is that this song was written about the love of his life, Demri Parrot who was rumored to have been present at this show. This was recorded in 1991 at The Moore in Seattle and was a benefit concert for Make a Wish, I believe. I still get goosebumps every time I watch this. Layne was an unparalleled talent, imo; but to be fair, all of these guys are. This really showcased Layne’s unbelievable range, commitment to his art and how emotionally connected to it he was. People tend to forget that this was a time before synthetic music and computer tracks were used in live performances. This is one singer, one (phenomenal) guitar player, Mr Jerry Cantrell, one bass, Mike Starr and one extraordinary drummer, Sean Kinney. Talent like this just doesn’t exist anymore. So much emotion, real feelings and the ability to translate all that into music. What an incredible gift. Thank you. ✌🏼♥️🎵

saw AIC in Sept 2022 .. they still have too.. was supposed to see them in 1994 but Layne had his issues and they bailed from the tour.. the vibe is still with them tho.. if you have a chance, you should def go see them.. these songs deserve to be played live.. You GOTTA do more AIC
A friend once described Layne's singing as someone reaching so deep, he sings from his toes. I couldn't agree more. I've been a fan of AIC ever since they opened up the Clash of The Titans tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. The crowd didn't appreciate them, but that didn't matter because Layne took control of the hostility, and Alice killed it. My only regret was that I didn't know their songs at the time, and couldn't appreciate the performance properly. The next day, with our ears still ringing, my friend and I bought the album Facelift, and I was forever a fan of Alice In Chains. RIP, Layne & Mike.

Layne and Maynard had an awesome bro-mance I would've loved to see develop further and would've really really loved to see them exchange vocal performances of each other's work.

Glad you dug this. It's a powerhouse performance. AiC have a lot of great tracks. Others have mentioned Down In A Hole (both the studio version and MTV Live Unplugged are great) but you could also check out Would?, Dam That River, Them Bones, Rain When I Die, Junkhead, (pretty much anything off Dirt), Nutshell, We Die Young, I Stay Away, Grind, Again... The list goes on.
I think Grind gets over looked and less love and appreciation than it deserves.
Dirt is one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Saw them with stone temple pilots open opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers and stood off to the side by the bass player as I played back then, I could literally feel Lane’s vocals in my chest over the bass player. He had a raw power I’ve not heard since.
So jealous. I'd have loved to see Aic in their prime. Sadly it wasn't till I was older that I really fully experienced & fell in love with Chains. Shitty thing is I've lived in the Seattle area since months after Kurt died. I never got to see STP either. Saw Chili peppers in 1995 or 1996.
@@Sindollx666x I was blessed to have grown up in that era of music and seen some amazing concerts like Pantera open for White Zombie which is still to this day one of the best I’ve ever heard live. Saw every Slayer concert since Reign in Blood till the finale tour. One band I regret never getting a chance to see was Dark Angel. I was fan of theirs since their first album but never got the chance. I did get to see Nirvana but it was a horrible show. Kurt sounded like crap. Sound garden too and Chris sounded like crap which was disappointing to me back in the day. But that’s live lol
@AzViking69 I was lucky too. My mom fronted a rock band before I was born. She was a rocker my whole childhood. Started taking me to concerts when I was 5. I saw the Moody Blues, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Skid Row (when they were band new!) Aerosmith, and Skid Row again, moody blues, the monkees, and countless others!
I cried when I couldn't go see Motley Crue at 6. They were playing The Monsters of Rock festival and mom had to explain to me what "pit tickets" were, and how I would DIE .
@AzViking69 Pantera & Zombie holy eff that's awesome. I forgot they toured together. My mom got me into Zombie. I did a vocal cover of Pantera's Cemetery Gates not too long ago. I believe it's up on my channel.

Alice in Chains is an amazing band!!!
This song showcases Laynes amazing range. They have so many other great songs which actually have some amazing harmonies sung with the guitarist and co-vocalist Jerry Cantrell. Cantrell wrote a great song entitled "The Rooster" that was about his fathers time in the Vietnam war. The rooster is a nickname his father had been given. Other amazing songs are "Would?", "Sludge factory", "Nutshell", "No excuses", "Heaven Beside you", "Rain When I Die", "Down in a Hole", "Man in a box", "Angry Chair", "Sea of Sorrow", "Brother", and "I Stay away." They also had an amazing MTV Unplugged set they performed of many of these songs that rivaled Nirvana's unplugged set in how they reworked these songs into new pieces. Layne also later fronted another band that produced one album "Above". It was called "Mad Season" and was a supergroup comprised of members of the grunge bands of the time. Some great songs were "River of Deceit", "Long Gone Day", "I don't know anything", and "I'm above".
I love AIC and I'm glad you're jumping in. Layne was so amazing! I would like to suggest checking him out with the band Mad Season with the song Wake Up. It will blow you away.

Oh man, I didn't expect to catch some AIC on this channel! Hell yeah. As a zillion others have probably noted, you're checking out a legendary band right now in Alice in Chains - Literally, AIC was one of "The Big 4" (although 4 really isn't enough at all to account for the grunge movement that was happening at the time) of what became known as "grunge". In no particular order, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam are the 4 powerhouses of not only the West Coast grunge movement, but all four of them were literally ALL FROM SEATTLE, and all 4 of them doing their thing in the same space. Despite being from the same city at the same time, each of the Big 4 have an incredibly distinct sound perhaps most characterized by their each-incredible frontmen, each band really breaking through the wall at the time and making a massive connection with people then and still.
As you can tell in the fashion, the hair, the vocal styles, grunge was born as a bit of a rejection to the Rock and social style that popularly preceded them. When you think of any other genre you might be intimately familiar with, and you think of the PILLAR artists that represented the groundbreaking and iconic movement in their respective space, Alice in Chains is one of the 'grunge peers' in that echelon.
I spent this comment writing not just about AIC but about the movement and their peers because really, they're all connected in this. If you liked Alice in Chains here, you absolutely need to hear more Alice in Chains, but you also AB-SO-LUTELY need to hear some of the other three as well. Like, without question. Technically unrelated to 'grunge', but Tool's groundbreaking EP "Opiate" was happening around the same time, absolutely in similar circles, venues, and crowds. You're tapping into it now, man. Catching up to an incredible time in rock history that means so much more to people that are quite still alive, that defined so much of our youth, attitudes, feelings, representation, and paths still. These bands literally paved the way, and that way was absolutely off the path at the time.

Layne's pain was from his drug habit. His songs radiated that pain, it's pure sadness we lost a talent like him. My roots are from Seattle, when Layne died I could not believe it. Our great loss.
And his pain was also due to Demri, his ex fiance. I truly believe her death in 1996 was a major nail in his coffin-even though it was still years before he passed.
The last time Mike Starr went to spend time with him (just before he died) Layne told Mike that he saw Demri (her ghost) I believe she was coming to help him cross over, because he was dying.

Grunge is personified in Layne Staley. He can drag a vocal through the dirt and still send chills up your arms. You can feel the pain.
I know AIC gets hella copyright striken, but some of their stuff gets through. If possible I rec “I stay away”. I like most AIC songs but “I stay away” is one of the few songs that evokes real feelings for me. It’s hard to explain how the song makes me feel but maybe wistful, melancholic, and something resembling nostalgia even tho it’s not a song that’s nostalgic for me. Idk it just has a feel to it that is emotional. AIC’s catalog (w/ Layne) isn’t long so there isn’t a huge discography to go through, but they were an incredible band. Super evocative musically and Layne’s vocals are prob some of my all time fav. I’m a sucker for rasp in a voice and soulfulness, and Layne had both qualities.

Masterful pacing , giving the song the room to breath and explode with dynamics. The vocals were fkn amazing. His voice was like sandpaper sanding down any rough edges, so smooth. If you stood in front of him you might find yourself bald from your getting your hair blown away.

I've been in love with AIC for over 30 years. Very few singers invoke that feeling of pain like Layne. Sad to say it doesn't get much happier than this in much of his music.

Thank you for having the fortitude to examine something different. I admire your honesty and open mindedness. I have been an AiC fan since 1991 and had the good fortune of seeing Layne perform twice. This is probably my favorite recorded version of Love, Hate, Love…and you are absolutely correct on all of your points. One bit of trivia you may not know is that this song was written about the love of his life, Demri Parrot who was rumored to have been present at this show. This was recorded in 1991 at The Moore in Seattle and was a benefit concert for Make a Wish, I believe. I still get goosebumps every time I watch this. Layne was an unparalleled talent, imo; but to be fair, all of these guys are. This really showcased Layne’s unbelievable range, commitment to his art and how emotionally connected to it he was. People tend to forget that this was a time before synthetic music and computer tracks were used in live performances. This is one singer, one (phenomenal) guitar player, Mr Jerry Cantrell, one bass, Mike Starr and one extraordinary drummer, Sean Kinney. Talent like this just doesn’t exist anymore. So much emotion, real feelings and the ability to translate all that into music. What an incredible gift. Thank you. ✌🏼♥️🎵

saw AIC in Sept 2022 .. they still have too.. was supposed to see them in 1994 but Layne had his issues and they bailed from the tour.. the vibe is still with them tho.. if you have a chance, you should def go see them.. these songs deserve to be played live.. You GOTTA do more AIC
A friend once described Layne's singing as someone reaching so deep, he sings from his toes. I couldn't agree more.
I've been a fan of AIC ever since they opened up the Clash of The Titans tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. The crowd didn't appreciate them, but that didn't matter because Layne took control of the hostility, and Alice killed it. My only regret was that I didn't know their songs at the time, and couldn't appreciate the performance properly.
The next day, with our ears still ringing, my friend and I bought the album Facelift, and I was forever a fan of Alice In Chains.

I would have to disagree with you here as Man in the Box was pretty much my introduction to AIC and I still love it to this day but I get what you’re saying as well.
