The last original #MarioAndLuigi game we've seen from the now-defunct AlphaDream, Paper Jam mixes the worlds of both this RPG series and its sister series, Intelligent Systems' Paper Mario, to... Well, not to BAD results, per se, but not necessarily great ones, either. It feels very run of the mill for me, where they strip a lot of the personality of what made each world unique in order to make it just focused on the world of Mario, which is far less interesting by itself. It's still a fun Mario & Luigi game, but it's one where you can just FEEL like something's off. #Nintendo

Fun fact: It takes Toadette 3 hours to build a papercraft the size of a toy, but she can build one that's possibly 20-30 feet tall instantaneously, to the point where the Kameks couldn't see it until it was already completed. It's a sturdy, complex papercraft, too, it has an extending tongue and can withstand falling into lava several times. What I'm basically saying is, "What are the RULES, dammit?!"
I believe she gathered the Toads that Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario saved to build the giant paper crafts, so she was able to do it quicker with them. Also, she probably got faster at it as well.

Fun Fact: Paper Luigi was meant to be playable in this game, but the devs thought that pressing four buttons simultaneously would be too chaotic for the player.
Yet they did Mario and Luigi: Partners In Time with all 4 buttons.

I can actually kinda see where they were coming from to be honest.
The only reason having four playable characters worked in PiT was because Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were either piggybacking on their older selves or were fighting by themselves. You only needed to press two buttons during each individual fight for counterattacks and some Bros Attacks had individual button presses while others could have the babies do something to make the attack itself more challenging for those familiar with the game.
Still, they did both Luigis dirty in this game. Making the main Luigi a butt-monkey while Paper Luigi only gets a few cameos here or there. The meta jokes didn't make things any better to be fair, I'd leave said jokes to the fans and the Neptunia series.

When the babies were piggybacked, you didn't NEED to input the babies as well as the other corresponding bro to dodge. While in this one, you do. For example, the pokey boss would be even more painful. Since you'd have to input a jump input for all 4 in that case. Not saying all their decisions was good (should of maybe allowed paper Luigi to switch in. Be pretty neat if you got him midway through and could switch between paper luigi or paper mario. Along with his own standout feature to replace the paper stacking mechanic, and his own unique set of trio attacks)

Debatable, as someone who played every mario & luigi game back to back, I genuinely hated this one, not just because it isn't even a proper crossover.

I’ve missed the Mario and Luigi games, would like to revisit Bowsers Inside Story as well as try the rest of the series.

The first one I played on an emulator that would crash when I started a fight. The second game, I never had access too. Beat Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team. The Trio Attacks are exemplary of the all three characters being essential to boss fights. If just one of the bros. falls, you can't use ANY of them unless they're revived. Yes, if Paper Mario falls you can use Bros. Attacks, but let's face it, the trio attacks are way more powerful and fun. I'm at least semi-glad that you didn't call Shiny RoboBowser a bad fight.
Well, it seems that they have delivered in time for your series of mario and luigi videos.
Are they though? I feel like the advantage you get from having only M&L or Paper Mario alive kinda cancels that out. It just feels like bad game design to me.
If that is true, then why does Charriii say that Paper Mario's Trio Attacks pale in comparison to the Bros. Attacks?
And is not having access to these best attacks a suitable exchange for Bowser not chasing you in 3D?
@@gravity8120 well the trio attacks are way more dynamic and fun but the damage can really differ on how good you are at them like the kite so it sometimes easier with the Bros attacks since almost all of them follow the same type of pattern
Also this game has like 5 massive sequence breaks in the first 30 minutes of the game, not to mention the myriad of other glitches there is.

It's actually insane. I have a completed file with the bros at level 2 because I glitched past every fight except the tutorials. Honestly I think it's mostly to the game's advantage, you can do a lot of cool broken stuff. The fact that I walked through a wall on accident in my first playthrough is a little ridiculous though.
Part of me wonders if that's connected to AlphaDream's financial problems in their final years. Y'know, cuz they might not have been able to afford the time and money it would take to properly bugtest the game.
@@ZilbaFollie Most likely. AD was having financial issues pretty much since Dream Team. Though they had chances to fix it both with this game AND the two remakes. And theh didn't capitalize on it unfortunately.
@@linhero797 It makes sense why this was the case. The jump from 2d pixel art to 3d models was probably pretty rough. Making all of those 3d assets from scratch would've cost them a fortune to make, and they likely didn't get to recover fully from it due to the lower sales of the subsequent games to follow.
The game is sometimes super self aware of certain very weird things that it starts to be actually funny.
Also Kamek never fails to amaze me as a character.

Could you imagine if this game was made pre-Sticker Star? Think of the interactions between Starlow, Fawful, and other Mario and Luigi only characters and the Paper Mario characters like Count Bleck, O’Chunks, Kooper, Rawk Hawk, Koops, and the various other Paper Mario characters.

One problem: Fawful and Count Bleck are DEAD. Only characters who made it past the 2000s would've been viable to appear in a crossover. Unless you're thinking the game should've pulled a No Way Home.

Those characters wouldn’t have been included if it released pre-Sticker Star anyway. Not only are multiple of those characters dead/MIA, but Alphadream said they chose to just focus on the main cast and their interactions. They scrapped the idea of including original characters from both series very early on.

So am I the only one with questions about how _literal_ paper characters are capable of harming three-dimensional "real" ones? I feel like Bowser can withstand a couple hundred paper cuts.

Given no one tends to die proper, the implication is that enemies just give up when defeated... which means paper cuts are just as effective as any method as it makes you incredibly uncomfortable and upset.

As boring as this story is, the gameplay between the 3 characters is really solid in battles. Really starting to miss Alphadream, they coulda made a sick Mario and Luigi game using couch co-op with the Switch Joy-cons.

12:53 What feels wrong to me here though is I can get why Paper Peach may have a not-spectacular view of Luigi; he hasn't done too much in their world (except for SPM, but there he opposes them more than he helps them), but this is the 5th Mario & Luigi game, so 3D Peach should be aware by now that the Luigi of her world is very capable.

The paper world is essentially identical to the "real" world aside from the fact that everything is made out of paper. Won't get into all the details, but there's evidence of the real games happening in the paper world, and the paper games happening in the real world.
If anything, Paper Jam would work great as an explanation for why the world is so self-aware in Sticker Star onwards. If we look at Paper Jam as happening before Sticker Star, it makes total sense. The characters don't even realize they are paper until they fly out of the book world and realize that everyone in that world is round.
I have a better explanation: Sticker Star thought meta writing equals humor, not realizing how terribly unfunny referencing paper every 5 minutes was. Don't defend the game's shifty script.

And that's not an in-universe explanation. Paper Jam works as the perfect in-universe explanation for the change.
8:16 I believe Paper Bowser Jr uses puppet animation because he didn't have full body sprites in the original Sticker Star. He was always in his clown car. In this game they introduced new sprites, and most new animations seem to have been tweened, rather than choppy like all the other character animations.
10:12 I think it's less of Paper Mario "stretching" and more, being rolled up and extended. Think about how a rolled up poster can be made longer by pulling the exposed corners away from each other
14:30 Developers actually revealed that the Lakitus aren't actually on your side. They are secretly gaining intel on you and reporting back to Bowser. But at the beginning of the game, Lakitu introduces himself as being sent by Peach. It's possible that the Lakitus aren't on anyone's side, and were hired by BOTH Peach and Bowser. Peach pays Lakitu to help the bros find toads. Bowser pays Lakitu to get info about the bros. It's a win-win for everyone.
Overall, really nice video. There were a few things I hadn't even realized, like Mario & Luigi being unnecessary for most boss battles.
All in all this actually just makes me want to play Paper Jam again lol. I love it's humor and the gameplay is super tight.
At this point, I clicked this video expecting Starlow slander more than anything else.
I was not disappointed.

Paper Luigi was supposed to be in this game alongside paper mario as part of your party. However the dev team felt like it would make the controls too complicated to work after they did something like that in Partners in Time, so he was scrapped.

In partners in time you NEVER use all the 4 buttons to dodge or counter, you only use 2

Paper Mario's abilities and the battle cards were the gimmick and Color Splash was hilarious.
How to fix Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (Bros):
1) Have a more interesting plot
2) Original/New characters
3) Make Paper Luigi playable
4) Make Starlow less annoying
5) Create paper versions of Mario & Luigi characters
6) Have some parts not drag for too long
7 and mostly importly) EVERYONE ESPECIALLY STARLOW BE NICER TO LUIGI

05:10 - I'm fairly certain that the Paper Mario in this game isn't the Paper Mario from the first three Paper Mario games. Most folks consider Sticker Star and Color Splash (as well as Origami King) to be a rebooted Paper Mario trilogy.
Consider how Mario never makes any noises in the newer games, but does in Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario. Of course, nobody made "noises" in the original Paper Mario, but that's forgivable.
Considering Nintendo's sterilization of the spinoff franchises to be more "on-brand," it's just a big middle finger from them any way you slice it.
As Fawful's Minion said regarding Sticker Star; "This isn't Paper Mario! It's just Mario-shaped paper."
Why wouldn't he be different from the others? Just because the gameplay is different doesn't mean that sticker star, Color splash, and origami king are in different timelines. Best to assume they are in tell actual statements
Honestly, your videos have made me realize how ever since the first game with starlow in it, they just _relentlessly_ bash Luigi in these games, to a really upsetting degree. Why bother making him a protagonist if you clearly hate him so much?

It's really odd when their animations go from like choppy 8fps to smooth 60fps. It bugs me when that happens because like just fully go with one style or the other, not with this weird mishmash.

To be fair I think Miyamoto said in an interview that Mario is literally the brother's last name (So Mario is literally "Mario Mario"), so referring to Luigi AS Mario isn't necessarily inaccuate

You forgot an extra sin because paper luigi is actually in the game but only in the jukebox section after you beat the game.
I know its basically an inside joke for Nintendo to rag on Luigi all the time, but I think this game takes the cake for the most overabundant Luigi slander. Its like they forget that Luigi saved Mario from ghosts _multiple times,_ is just as capable (if not more so) than Mario, was the only reason Mario was even able to enter the dream world and stop Bowser in Dream Team, and is even more COURAGEOUS than Mario because "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

Fun fact! I was part of a prerelease event for this game! My dad was a game reviewer for a few years, and this was the last event we got to go to before he stopped. Honestly Nintendo treats its reviewers really well, like we got food, the game like 2 weeks early, and even a new 3ds XL for each person, all for free aside from the review. I also got Dream Team early the same way, including the 3ds but that one came with an exclusive sticker. Sadly the XL ended up being stolen from my locker when a massive theft wave hit my high school, but I still have the normal one to this day, and actually jailbroke it a few months ago. I also got Pokemon Black and Pokemon X for free because of game review, so yeah. Moral of the story is write solid articles as an independent game reviewer to potentially get free shit from companies.

The fact you can only see paper luigi in only one area… the music area relaxing to different types of music and occasionally seeing paper Mario and the other bros. It kind of makes me wish Paper Luigi was playable.
