The Elite Four's weird choices always confused me, too... until a few months ago, when I read the reason for it. Apparently, the gimmick for the Gen 1 Elite Four - at least originally - was that they don't specialize in just one type like the Gym Leaders do. Instead, they specialize in *2.*
Lorelei is a Water/Ice trainer, which is why she has a Slowbro.
Bruno is a Fighting/Rock trainer, hence the 2 Onix.
Agatha, as you posited, is indeed a Ghost/Poison trainer, which is why Golbat and Arbok are on her team.
Lastly, Lance is a Dragon/Flying trainer. That's why he has a Gyarados and an Aerodactyl.
To a lesser extent, the secondary types were chosen to specifically complement the primary ones. Agatha has a spooky bat and a big snake with a scary monster face that can literally Paralyze its opponents with fear to support her Ghosts, and Lance has a Chinese dragon and a prehistoric wyvern in addition to his Dragon types. Aesthetically, they make sense.

@@pokeymaster9415 I guess they deemed it too complex, or maybe the guy that came up with the idea only worked on the first games. This is something they axed before the game launched, like how they decided against making Bird a type and replaced it with Flying. Plus, by Gen 2, there were probably enough Pokemon that they didn't need to fill the gaps in certain types anymore.
I mean, it didn't stop them from giving Morty all 3 of the Gastly line and not a single Misdreavus, or from giving Karen a Gengar and a Vileplume instead of a Sneasel and a Tyranitar, but nobody's perfect.

Honest Opinion: First Gen is the worst one to go back to, and for the amount of shit people give XY and SM about the designs "Just being a basic object" RBY have straight up animals as designs.
Edit: 7:25 SEE?! Someone on the internet agrees with me, therefore I am factually correct. (In all seriousness though it makes no sense how much people defend Gen 1 designs, yet oenly hate on new ones, all because of nostalgia.)

There's a reason "Genwunner" is a well-known Term in the community. Pretty much no one except those people actually think Gen 1 was that great in terms of actual gameplay.

    • @weridplusho
      @weridplusho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@agitpolat1061 It's also a dead term. True genwunners are also, more or less, extinct. The only people keeping such a term alive are those who probably weren't in the fandom when they were around. For instance, this entire comment section has complaining about genwunner but not 1 genwunner.
Heck, I wonder how many that's mentioned "genwunner" has talked to an actual genwunner?

I could imagine a GenWunner going like
    “GEN ONE POKEMON DESIGNS BEST”
Meanwhile Gen 1: A FUCKING SEAL NAMED SEEL.

Japanese Gen 1 Names are even worse sometimes, JP Zapdos is named "Thunder" for example.
No, not the japanese word for it, but *literally* the english word "Thunder" (and then Jolteon is "Thunders", in case that wasn't creative enough for you), and likewise, Moltres is literally "Fire". Only Articuno got a slightly more imaginative name, being called "Freezer".

Fun fact: Lance has an illegal move on his dragonite, barrier. He also has 3 under leveled dragonites in gen 2. Lance is a hacker or uses a game shark

I know i'm late but the reason the trainer movesets on this game are weird is not only because of the pokemon moves itself but also because of how trainers work in first place, you see NONE of the pokemon trainers moves are manually made by the developers and when i say none i really mean NONE instead the moves the trainers use are decided by the pokemon learning moveset, let's say:
I have a pokemon that learn bubble on level 1, flamethrower on level 2, tackle on level 3, harden on level 4, thundershock on level 5, ice beam on level 6, dig on level 7.
If i get this pokemon to a random trainer with the level being in 1, then the pokemon will only know bubble, if i give it on level 4 then it will know bubble, flamethrower, tackle, hard, and if i give it on level 7 they will know harden, thundershock, ice beam, dig.
So yes they literally had no decision on which movesets the pokemons would have when used by trainers, and whenever they wanted they were forced to change the pokemon learning moves in first place, this is why we have stuff like arcanine using ember when trainers use it.

as much as I absolutely adore the rest of this video and the ongoing ‘I’m not supposed to be able to do this’ thing which sums up gen 1 perfectly in as few words as possible, I just can’t get over the fact that you included enbies in your sin about the gyarados on lance’s team, ‘guys, gals and non binary pals’. as an enby myself, my respect for you and your channel has just skyrocketed, I never see non binary inclusion or acknowledgment anywhere outside of specific lgbtq+ spaces, and I can not thank you enough

Basic world building questions problems and plot holes that NEVER GOT ANSWERED and we’re 26 years (and counting) into this franchise.

23:58 To be fair, they fixed this in Yellow (still considered a Gen 1 game) and every game after it.
29:25 Uh, ALL Ice-type moves use Special. In Gens 1-3, whether a move used Attack or Special was based on the move's type, not what kind of move it was. In other words, a move like Fire Punch used Special, while Hyper Beam used Attack. Gen 4 is where it changed and made certain Pokemon much more useful because of it.
29:46 This was a very common problem in Gen 1, if you look into it. Many Pokemon didn't naturally learn moves of their type. The Voltorb line didn't learn Electric moves, the Rhyhorn line didn't learn Rock or Ground moves, and so on.
31:24 Really? I just looked up his lineups for this version. He has nothing to counter Lance's team other than one Water-type move for Aerodactyl.
