Seen Mals in Afghan, Iraq, never owned one until 2 years ago. Rescued a female, 3.5yrs old, found Roberts channel and I went from having a hyper reactive, aggressive, overweight Mal, that was threatened with euthanasia to a beautiful, loving, crazy, 400mph Porsche with teeth.
She is so loving with my baby girls, my wife and she is inseparable from me. She goes everywhere with me, everyone loves her, love her craziness, her drive and her neediness for attention.
Thank you Robert for saving her!

I love not only how you handle the dogs, but how you handle the dog owners. You have a really good way of explaining things to your customers. I am not bad with dogs, but that does'nt make me a dog trainer, because a dog trainer is almost all of the time a human trainer first and foremost.

It's a fine line! Good on you for spotting that! Most bril handlers/trainers are not great with people. It takes skill to find the motivation for humans, as dogs are relatively simple. Cheers. JMNSHO!

I learn so much from you, it’s unbelievable. Most of my dogs (4.5 month Doberman/Shepherd) obedience & good behavior is credit to you!
When people ask, the answer is, “A guy on TH-cam”. 😂
I’m an almost empty nester at age 36, and it’s been difficult (emotionally) to find new purpose. I like to be needed pretty much constantly..
Anyways, I did a good couple hundred hours research before deciding that a working dog was for me!
No regrets.Zip, zilch, zero..... empty nest syndrome be gone! 😂♥️🙌🏼

Thank you Robert. So clear and obvious when you explain it - let your dog win. And it works. After signing up to Susan Garret's incredibly expensive Recallers program and learning to bully the dog, always winning, never letting the dog have the toy, my dog stopped playing tug completely. So much for R+ trainers huh! After watching and practising your techniques, my dog started playing again after refusing to for 6 months using of Susan's "force free" methods. Certainly puts it into perspective

I'm happy because I've been doing this with my malinios long before I ever saw this video! And its ALL true. She always wants the game to keep going and I pretent to struggle. When she rips it out of my hand she does a victory lap, whipping the toy around, and comes right back to me for more lol.

Robert, you and Goofy played such a big role helping me and my pup establish a bond I never thought possible. I was originally interested in IPO/IGP competition and titles, but stopped with the BH/VT. We still train, but its for my pups pleasure, not to compete. Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and experience. If you’re ever in Anchorage, AK, stop and say hi.

Glad I saw this... I have a 18 mo old Pit Bull. I did a lot of tugging during her teething ( light enough not to hurt the baby teeth) mostly to wear her out and to mitigate her biting everything. She was a teeny terrorist.
As her teeth grew in she mellowed from biting but has lot of drive . She’s almost 2 now and I’d put away the tug toys as we go out twice a day for walks. I realize it’s not enough for a young driven dog and will get the tugs out again.

This is excellent...I have an excellent example of why your exercise is so important. Especially when very tired I have handed my boys something that is really not good for them, typically when very tired and highly distracted. Perhaps instead of a toy a really expensive phone or mistaking a medicine for candy.
If you were to ever toss something while distracted or offer something and need to change your mind very quickly...your dog would be safe because you've literally conditioned him to realize you can quickly change your mind.
Another good example is if you were going to allow him to cross a street...but suddenly a vehicle came and something was obstructing your vision prior.
This type of conditioning is great for family dogs because real life can throw curve balls where you've made a handler mistake ( most often us family pet handlers rather than professional trainers...but it can happen to anybody) and you need to quickly recover from it
I had my previous dog trained this well but I might not train this one so advanced but it's definitely a huge safety bonus. :)

I tried your method this morning and i have to admit it only made me flustered and my poor dogo confused. Ive had my puppy for 3wks now she's 15wks old and your advice of walking the new dog with the current dogs has been EXTREMELY helpful. My puppy (yorkie) lives in my room which I'm fine with bc she's my dog anyways but I can't take her downstairs with my mom's dogs (3.5 yr chihuahua and 2yr rat terrier) the rat terrier is terrified of the puppy and the chihuahua is annoyed by her since she's really overbearing with play and doesn't respect boundaries. We've allowed the chihuahua to make fair corrections but the puppy just doesn't stop. We stopped all off leash interactions since every experience with the puppy is bad bc they don't like her. They only see each other on the walks and the older ones enjoy it bc they know the puppy is restrained lol. On leash when I allow the puppy to get close when the others are sniffing she lays down and crawls towards them and is now able to not hyper focus fixate on the other dogs. We have only done these walks together 2x and it's going great. We're probably going to do this everyday for a while. Thank you so much for spreading your knowledge

@@averyroos1125 patience lots and lots of patience. The tug toy is "my" toy. Which means it's out of sight and out of reach until I take it out. So, she really wants it when I take it out for a game. Make yourself and the toy super interesting. It really takes a lot of time and patience. I keep the game short, so it's something special for my dog when we do it. I can use other toys (rope and so on) now to play tug.

My 95lb GSD loves tug, but he rarely tries to win with any gusto(he will growl and bark and try to take it on occasion). He loves to hang on while I fling him around and I pull on it. Of course, now that he is full grown you can imagine that I can't do this very long(especially in this 95 degree weather we've been having). I've always let him win(I either let go out of exhaustion after he fails to fight for it or he does fight for it and I let go). I think he thinks the point of the game is to let Daddy do all the work while he hangs on for the ride.
Any tips on how to encourage my dog to take it more?

    • @CharityUniqueBlackwell
      @CharityUniqueBlackwell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had a dog like that...I hope Mr. Cabral answers because I never figured out why she did that. She was an EXCELLENT girl but she got CRAZY during tug.
I chalked it up to genetic aggression...this is the only time she got that way. Her eyes would even change ( I'm not joking). I never allowed anyone to play with her but ANYONE could pet her and she loved everybody...but tug was a no go except I could play with her but I did it carefully and I still got hurt almost everytime we played.
I think she had a genetic prey drive she couldn't control. She would give the tug up as soon as I commanded but while deployed she was extremely intense and unable to adjust her intensity.
If he has a theory I would love to hear it. I decided I might not breed her due to her tug intensity, most women wouldn't be able to handle all that lol
But if he has a better theory I would love to hear it. I just think certain levels of aggression are hard wired and I believe since I'm the one controlling and introducing the game, it's handler error if something went wrong. I say this because I always started the game as she would never snatch anything from my hand, ever.
So far be it from me to label your baby :)
But in my case I think my baby just was hyper aggressive genetically ( in this circumstance)and when I didn't want to see her like that I simple did not start her up lol
I think its healthy but the handler has to decide the boundaries and some families should omit tug altogether. Especially women who don't enjoy seeing that intensity like I do.

Hey Robert! Love your content! I have a question. My 8mo old rottie has the tendency to get things from the table (remote control, brothers toy figures, paper) and when we see her, she runs away. She has a good out understanding with toys and playing tug, but when it comes to these things she will just run, growl when we get close, and even snap. I always have her slip lead on and when she gets something I pop it, but she won’t out it. I use treats, still won’t out it. Eventually, I dropped a treat, stepped back and she let it go. Later, she laid down and when I tried to pick up the lead, she snapped and growled at me and I gave her a correction on the slip and a firm no. My mom says she has associated the slip lead with “pain” and me correcting her, but I don’t constantly correct her. What do I do?
    Thank you!

@@allaboutroofing2 Thank you for the reply, yes I am planning to get a phone consultation and get his advice on this. She has shown aggression. When the item is not in her mouth, but in the floor and in between her paws, she growls when we try to reach for it. I just recently got the Mini Educator and I have been getting her conditioned to it through come and heel work. Now, I have been working on the out and leave it command. She has something she shouldn’t have I say leave it and use working level continuous mode until it is out of her mouth. When she approaches something and I know she is going to try and get it, again, I say leave it and tap tap and she focus back on me. For cases when she has it in between her paws, I put her in a sit and say leave it and pick up the item. I’ve had the collar for a week and she’s been picking up on it pretty well. I do 20 minute sessions 3 times a day so that she doesn’t get too overwhelmed as e collar training can be exhausting for them.

@@aliciaorozco4099 awesome! hopefully Robert will see this. I also notice that he seems to be more responsive to emails since he has a weekly Q&A and usually pulls those from email rather than the comment section, so you might try that too. He can also direct you to find the right kind of trainer for continuing training which I suspect might be a bit harder to find the right qualifications. Thanks for the friendly chat and I'm sorry I couldn't help more. I have the same mini educator, they are very reliable, just make sure you watch Roberts e collar hack and the e collar attached to a prong, if you haven't already, since the biggest issue is the probes making proper contact with skin. My results were mixed in the beginning because I didn't know how tight the e collar had to be to work consistently. Hope you have a happy Sunday. Cheers.
