    That is why I always diffferentiate WAIT from STAY. That is wait until I call you; stay until I come back to you. Love your videos Robert. My 8 month old Belgian has just won his first obedience competition using all your methods.

      This is a good idea. I’ve taught wait as part of stand still with me until I move (for crossing the road, stopping to let someone past on a pavement etc.). I’ve primarily taught stay with a release of “ok” next to the dog (no touch) but have also occasionally combined stay with come. Sit is pretty much always combined with stay

      I train positions in a box. The result is the dog doesent creep forward at all. I also dont have wait command. Sit means sit, down means down, stand means stand, no need for additional stay command.If the dog is sitting it is implied that he must sit on that place and not stand, walk around and sit again when he wants.Also it is implied that he must not lay down.Sit means sit, nothing more, nothing less.

      @@joezec72 being as animals are not rational, per Aristotle (metaphysics) and BF Skinner, they are your robots whether your emotions like it or not. We were not created the same as the animals. We were created to have dominion over them and do so as good stewards (Genesis 2). So yes, you should prefer a robot, as you call them, as opposed to autonomous creatures who cannot, in principle, think for themselves. It is a simple matter of metaphysics.

  • @pattisonenterprises

    Totally agree. There needs to be some kind of “release” type of command for sit-stay, down-stay, stand-stay types of commands. The dog should never have to guess when the exercise is complete. You give fantastic reasons why. Subscribing now.

    • @gymkhanadog
      @gymkhanadog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Any following command should be an indication that the "exercise" is over. This is why myself and many others who've commented agree that you shouldn't conflate Sit and Stay/Wait commands; it just confuses the dog. When you tell him to Sit, he sits, he expects that either you're doing to say something further, do something, give him something, etc... If you tell him to Sit, and then to Stay, you have now completed that cycle of commands in the dog's mind. He now _knows_ for absolute certain that he should be Sitting *and* Staying/Waiting. I've never had any dog be confused about when the command is over because the commands are not conflated, so the dog is never confused about what he should or shouldn't be doing.

    THANK YOU !
    I've been making this exact mistake and this video is like a light bulb going off. I even experienced the very issue of my dog anticipating the recall and breaking the stay today in the park. It's suddenly seems such an obvious mistake and he's learning the pattern I'm now teaching him. One positive is I've spent a lot of time proofing him against distractions by rewarding in position and only recently been calling him to recall from a sit/down so I may not have lost too much ground. Back to basics for a while to repair the damage.
    I've still got so much to learn. I can't thank you enough for this invaluable advice, can't wait for the next video !

    I'm a yoga teacher in training with a service dog. This really helps me to form a plan for how to keep her stationary in the classroom while I do yoga. We learned in training not to give second commands, but we also learned recalls and in doing regular obedience with her, I've focused a lot on the recalls and stays instead of using sit like I was taught to. It's such an easy habit to get into, especially when you constantly see other people doing that or you've grown up with dogs that have been trained but not well. I'm going to work on fixing this habit. Thanks for the video!

    Clear and concise explanation of an essential part of training a dog. It is essential that any trainer's clients need to understand the WHY. It really gets my goat how some trainers like to complicate things to make themselves look like magicians instead of explaining to dog owners the WHY and that all dog training is is association and repetition. Train the owner, train the dog

  • @Aprilme2

      If your a dog trainer you should know that there is not one formula of training. It all depends on the owners and dog's needs and skills. So if you tell this to all your clients you should reconstruct your training method.

    He does make a good point so the dog doesn’t form the negative behavior of just getting up and walking to the handler when given any type of distraction. The only part I would disagree with is having to walk back to the dog to release them. You can release at a distance. This method can easily work with a dog who is just a pet or who just competes in obedience. But an actual working dog, where it be security, detection or whatever, you have to be able to recall from a distance. Even if they are in a sit, down.

    • @TheSNOTTBALL
      @TheSNOTTBALL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thus exactly what I was thinking

    • @skinnydogkew
      @skinnydogkew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all recall and release are two different things, nowadays people also have multiple releases to direct the dog to a certain reward or lack thereof. Second, constant release from distance creates jittery stays, you have to change the picture constantly so the dog doesn't think distance or posture etc. Also if you always call the dog from a stay, then your at liberty recall will definitely suffer.

    Best video on sit/stay I have seen ,makes perfect sense once you show it here, I have been doing it all wrong , using hand signals for sit , hand signal for stay, which he understands , then i release with a hand signal as well as the spoken command of "let's go" but if i lengthen the wait time on the release, he always breaks the sit/stay , he's only good for about 45 seconds at the moment and only if i am facing him , if i turn my back , he is no longer listening or obeying, my Shepherd is very eager to please, follows me right at my side ,always touching my leg no mater where i go , not sure i like him doing this ,kinda gets annoying when it's all day long , My female shepherd doesnt do this , she just hangs out on the couch and isnt attached at my hip literally

    Appreciate this video -- This is how I lost an incredibly smart Kelpie I had when I was 12 years old. He was extremely obedient, however, one day he ran across the road to play on the beach. I spotted him, ran to the road (he was on the opposite side of a busy beach road) and commanded him to "Stay". He "Stayed" momentarily before running back across the street and was hit.
    I only now realize after watching this video why he didn't "Stay" like he usually would.

    @Robert Cabral pretty cool video. Its nice to see another dog teacher using negative markers. And you are so correct about the use of the negative markers. They should never be used in anger or frustration. Dogs pick up on those emotions rather easily. When you feeling anger or frustration its time to take a break and have some play time. I know a good game of tug can get out a lot of the frustrations. But its important to never give up, your dog will learn. You just need to be patient and calm during dog teaching.

    Excellent instructional Video. Thanks. It reinforces what I am trying to do with my girl, which is needed to know I am still on the right track.
    I use 2 different words. I only use the word “stay” IF and ONLY IF I am returning to the dogs side. If I am going to call the dog to me, I use the word “wait”
    I had an awful lot of bad training advice from a “qualified” trainer ( I only found out later that she had an online qualification and very, very, very little hands on experience). As a novice myself at the time I didn’t realise that what she was teaching was dreadful.
    I am now in training myself to teach agility so thankfully I know better. However, I have been left with a dog that mainly does as she is commanded, but if something better is around she can become disobedient.
    I have had to go back to basic training to try to unteach all the bad things I was teaching her and rewarding her for.
    What makes me mad about the entire thing is that I was made to feel like a bad person whenever I tried to question something. I suppose actually I was, simply because, I not only listened to her, but did as she said also.
    The woman is still teaching, but not many people attend her classes and leave after a few sessions to go elsewhere.

    I understand it, and this is for sure the way I want to train my dog. The only part I do not get though is you are saying he has to wait on that tactile release, but the first to times you did it, you did it from a distance. Once by saying come, and once by saying yes. The third time you did it with the tactile and said yes. How does he know the difference for when he can come from you saying come, or that he needs to wait till you come back and touch him?

      So what if you have already taught that wrong commands. Can u re teach them?

    • @robertcrawford515
      @robertcrawford515 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michellep7087 yes, any command can be changed or retaught. Changing is simply adding the new command with the old, then removing the old after the dog responds to the new by itself.
      Changing the command involves marking time with a new word, then adding the former word until it is accepted.
      You can also start fresh and command/Mark time/reward as if the dog knew nothing.
      It depends on the personality and level of training both the dog and the trainer have.

    I love where you're coming from with this, but I also think a verbal release is very important for the situations where you can't touch in the moment, but need your dog to come to you.

    • @ennuiwolf
      @ennuiwolf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess what he's saying is not to connect the "Sit" with the "Come", as this connection can make the dog break their sit because they want to please you, so in order to be good boys, they'll come to you and break their sit because they think that's what you'll want them to do. A verbal release is needed, but many people end up first doing the "Sit" and then "Come". This connection will make the dog look for the second command.
      Not to mention that Robert does do Obedience, which asks for recalls and verbal releases from Sit.

    I'm not certain I'm buying into this, but thanks for the video. It certainly makes me want to pause and think. A couple of questions 1) Why assume the dog would break the stay and cross the street without getting the recall cue? Couldn't you just say the skill wasn't properly generalized 2) Why did Goofy break his sit at 4:42 without your tactile release? I think you bring up a good point though about linking the stay and the recall together though.

      I agree. I've gotten my dog to stop running, sit,and stay mid-fetch and I think this is a good skill to have in case he ever needs to stop in the middle of something. Instead of him focusing on coming back to me he focuses on me and what I'm telling him to do.

      2. Probably because he overshadows alot and in the video once he rewarded the release, always reward then release, as for a "wait" or "curb" the release is the reward.
      Also I don't know if he uses yes as a reward marker but your reward marker should always be different than your release and I prefer not repeating the cue especially when the dog is already performing the behavior that was cued .
      He makes a very valid premise though too many owners AND trainers do stays wrong and make habits of releasing the dog improperly.

    This makes perfect sense.. I've messed up my dog.. Lord, now I have to undo everything I taught.. I made him to go down from sit.. His down is mostly laying down side ways.. I taught him to stay only to recall him in few mins. I taught him so many things the wrong way the more I get to watch your sessions.... The very taught of me messing it up and now to undo all of it, I hope I wont leave him in a confused state of mind..

    I agree that it is imperative to train a dog to have a release word, but it is also very important to have a recall with both verbal and non verbal cues. Staggering the release with verbal and non verbal cues as well as stay and approach will eliminate the preemptive movement.
    Also, as we all do at times, in this video the trainer makes a mistake that can confuse the dog.
    After the dogs is in a sit, he marks time with good, then again says sit. It seems normal to say , good sit goofy, to us. However, the dog gets confused and wonders why the command to sit is given when he IS sitting.
    This is where many dogs begin laying down to a sit command, confused.
    Good points in the video, these are my opinions based on training, experience and applied animal behavioral studies.

    I was doing this this morning and I thought I had better see if I was doing it right.
    I was get my German shepherd to down and I walk around him and then I realised him with the tug ball.
    I will try the release word and the tap next time.
    I am learning so I will get there, thank you Richard. 😁🙏

      I have always said training the dog is easy. The problem is training the owner.

    I think a lot of the “Sit” then “Come” chaining come from CGC training. Good video! People are oblivious to their own behavioral patterns.

    That was superb! And i'm 100% guilty. I really like the tactile release.
    I think i can apply this to the throw ball and stay then send out. I need to clearly break that into 2 parts not one linked command.
