A very promising start from a brand with a bit of an advantage. The dial is really lovely, and does a far better impression of actual waves that the likes of Omega and Seiko manage. Bit of pot luck sizing it though, so best worn loose! Cheers, Jody

Zodiac solved the butterfly clasp problem years ago by putting a spring in the clasp to allow for expansion - a perfect and eloquent solution that I'm surprised hasn't been taken up in some form by other brands.

Let's be honest, 90% of new brands kick off with a 40mm diver, so any watch in this category needs to be stands out & I think this definitely does. Really like that dial.

It immediately made me think of the Lake Suwa, to the point where at first, I thought it was ripping it off. Just like cheap Tiffany Blue watches though, I think this could be a lower-priced way to to buy the higher-end version it strongly resembles.

Just got mine. Thoughts: great looking watch. The face is stunning! I got the blue one and it looks better in person than in pics, which is saying a lot! The bracelet is great. Looks like an integrated but it’s not really, as it can be removed and a strap put on, if the h links are not your cup of tea. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the top crown. It controls the inner bezel so you can move the time for a second time zone. I travel a lot so this was a must for me as I wanted something I could adjust easily. The issue lies in that it’s a bit on the loose side. I have worn it for a day and have already had adjust the bezel multiple times due to it moving around in my hand. Not a deal breaker, but it is annoying and for $440 I expected a tighter fit. Another issue was communication. I ordered the watch on Christmas Eve. It was in pre order so I expected a long wait. It actually took about a month and a week(it got here on the 30th) which it’s honestly not bad at all. However it was tough getting in touch with them. I still have no receipt, and got no info on shipping. Only communication was an email stating shipping was delayed (not unexpected for a pre sale) It just showed up at the house! All in all a great addition my collection!!

Similar dial pattern to an Islander Northport - but I think the Islander is a much more compelling package, albeit a traditional dive style so perhaps not a fair comparison. I just think the design elements blend perfectly in the Islander and not so well on this.

Okay Jody so this watch is about 2-3 changes away from being perfect firstly the bracelet is just not correct tissot has it right it need to taper to 18 at the clasp. The first link in the bracelet also does not follow the outer angle of the lugs. I enjoy the integration they went for with it. I’m actually impressed it’s just that small change away on the bracelet end. Personally the double crown compressor look is not a big hit for a lot of people this watch as a time and date single screw down crown at 3 with simple crown guards. They already have the shape made for the crown guards just make 2 smaller rectangles at the same proportion but a little thicker and boom better oris aquis crown guards for this micro brand. If they made it a “Gada” or aqua Tara kinda watch I feel like it would be a hit. Designing a watch is genuinely hard. There’s 2 schools of thought the mb&f style of made scientist kinda out there watch making and classical watch design. With classical watch designing I truly believe it’s a exercise in restraint. This watch seems over cooked from the 12 hour bezel. Internal bezel I might at. Double crown. A simpler design I am sure would sell better and be a better watch. There’s a reason the Rolex submariner is always going to be followed by brands, it’s Design is perfect for its use case. Just like a pilots watch. In this watches case it needed to be a time and date watch in 40-38mm with a 20-18mm bracelet down to 18-16mm at the clasp. Probably the same dial size funny enough. Or they could just change the dial and hand size and make it bigger. Either way the bezel and 2ed crown have got to go.

Brands probably put Automatic on the dial to be easily identified in static shots. Granted, "Automatic" is a bit generic, but bigger brands do this all the time: The Tag Heuer Aqua Racer has "Caliber 5" on its Autos to easily differentiate from the otherwise caliber-nondescript Quartz models. Likewise, the original Bond era Seamasters featured dials with no Caliber description on the quartz models, whereas the Autos had the addition of "Chronometer" on the dial, which essentially just means "automatic/mechanical," albeit a highly accurate one (by COSC standards of -4/+6 sec/day).
In both instances, it makes identifying these autos from their quartz counterparts much easier in static shots. Now, admittedly, Holmr does not make a quartz version of this watch, however, the marketing value still remains: A potential customer can easily identify the watch as an automatic by JUST a static photo of the watch. Now they don't make the movement, and the Miyota is not notably accurate, so they can boast neither the caliber name nor a COSC accuracy grade, but the base level message still gets across. Virtually every other product does this in some way to denote a desired aspects of their product, be it a V8 over a V6 trim of sports car, or a high performance gaming laptop over a lower powered general use one.
In summary, I see no issue to highlight an automatic movement on a watch dial, as, let's be real, it is generally the desired type for watch enthusiasts. "Automatic" certainly is on the blander side of branding, but in lieu of an in house, or particularly special movement, I don't know if I can think of anything better, and having such credentials usually starts at the four figure price point.
And yes, before anyone freaks out, I am fully aware of the Tag Heuer controversy: "their" movement, the "Caliber 5," is nothing more than either an ETA 2824 or a Sellita SW-200 (they used both) with a decorated rotor, making it NOT an in house by even the most lax definition. As such, for that watch, Tag Heuer really didn't have any business naming someone else's movement and therefore, the watch really was overpriced for what it was, sailing solely on either the TAG, or the Heuer name.

No point on a sports watch plus everybody has an smartphone today ! Ok I do have some GMT (office) watch’s its cool but better a just 1 the. 2 or 3. Like the kind of H link’s bracelet, the dark blue dial 💯👌 but remove that double crown please 👎 is it screw ? Great review, Jody. A lot to like about this one...........Love the dial, case, bracelet etc... The text on the reverse is a bit out of whack... but that doesn't bother me too much (you'll not see it when the watch is on your wrist). The butterfly clasp is a great choice, HOWEVER, as you quite rightly pointed out, this type of closure is really hit and miss without half links (for this reason the HOLMR Epifarer won't be on my shopping list, as I just won't take a punt on a 'will it fit or won't it' timepiece....a real shame). A dive style adjustable clasp would still have looked just O.K. Decent value for the specs.

Wow that dial is gorgeous. Just love those waves. Honestly if it came w/ the leather strap Jody showed it on or a blue tropic for a bit less dough, I might go for that. The bracelet, while sharp, really looks like a...bracelet. Wish it were slightly thinner. I don't mind the marine inspired themes on a non-dive watch at all... the design and naming is coherent, that's all that matters to me. Who actually ever dives with a dive watch? Probably less than .1% of dive watch owners I'd bet... So a sports watch I can wear in the water is enough for me.

So this compression diver isn't a divers watch? I'm confused.

@@JustOneMoreWatch thanks Jody, and merry Christmas. The dial is a copy of the GS lake Suwa model. So please don’t describe a Chinese made copy of it as a new dial idea. And the turtle imagery is beyond hypocrisy with china’s complete ecological destruction of the South China Sea. I love your videos , but not this one. Cheers 🍻 !

reminds me off the second hour giant stride , and why start a new brand when you already own a brand ? RLG havent put out a watch for ages now ? have they giving up with that brand ?

I'm to the point that no micro adjust is a deal breaker. I have to wike the watch to buy it and it has to wear well for me to like it.

I really like the design and the dial looks even better than the version GS makes.

the end link doesn't match at the end of the logs , is kinda annoying to the eye, very cool dial, at the beginning I thought it was a ocianus, I don;t know why compressors don't attract me, but chronos do, thanks Jody! ahh and don't forget the turtle is certina's signature!

There's a lot to like about this one I think. Finishing looks very well executed, and that bracelet, caseback, and dial are quite nice considering the price. As pointed out though, I don't think that overall the design makes sense. In more ways than one. I have a tip for you, Jody. I saw while browsing Amazon for watches earlier, a men's Tissot, "Coutourier" 39mm, w/ a Powermatic 80 movement on a bracelet for $250.66!!!! And thats a Prime item, so free 2 day shipping and returns. That I think, is a fantastic value, but there was only one left. Hopefully this tip finds you well, and in time. Merry Christmas, Jody, and thanks for all your hard work and effort in 2022. Cheers

Jody, do you happen to know if there were ever homages made of the Omega Globemaster?
