We call him " sifu". He is an all rounder ... singer, composer, album producer, actor , lyricist , painter, film & music director, script writer and a poet . ...and very good in all of these. A lot of his songs have deep meanings and sometimes difficult to decipher.
He's not singing but storyteller. His song about Life, Quotes etc. The lyrics very meaningful and Poetic. Not many Malaysian can translate with normal Malay language. Because he using Classic/Traditional Langguage. Sometimes, Different Definitions with Modern Malay Langguage. Hud-Hud meaning Bird. The connection of the Hoopoe with King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba in the Qur'anic tradition is mentioned in passing in Rudyard Kipling's Just So story "The Butterfly That Stamped". And that song related with that story.
Hoopoes were seen as a symbol of virtue in Persia. A Hoopoe was a leader of the birds in the Persian book of poems The Conference of the Birds ("Mantiq al-Tayr" by Attar) and when the birds seek a King, The Hoopoe points out that the Simurgh was the King of The Birds.

Dato' Mohamad Nasir bin Mohamed (born 4 July 1957) is a Malaysian poet, singer-songwriter, composer, producer, actor and film director also known as a Sifu in the Malaysian music industry.
One of the music genius in Malaysia music industry. Most of him song are evergreen and until now he is always manage to get full house audience for his concert. He such an entertainer and never get bored when go to his concert

For me, he creates what he wants, what he likes, not what others expect. He performs because he likes it. He's like a free will artist. Even most of his performance was not pitch perfect but nobody cares. People just aren't able to hate him. He never gave a harsh comment on newbies. His songs can be very enjoyable, soothing or nostalgic. The true meaning of evergreen. He's a brilliantly serious actor too. Even wrote and directed a movie back then.
The interesting part about AJL is the winner of the Song not the Singing 😅 so This song win for it's creativity. Mostly because nobody thought of making such unique song in that time where balad and rock taking over the industry ❤
Many of M.Nasir's songs are difficult to decipher, resulting in numerous interpretations by various persons. M. Nasir usually focuses on delivering lyrics rather than vocals. He would never perform the same song in the same style twice, and would always come out with something new (impromptu), much like the Counting Crows (Adam Duritz) band. In one of his interviews, he mentioned that he into country music (Usually the lyrics are always important and conversational). He's a living legend and a highly respected composer and songwriter. Some of his notable songs include a duet with Siti Nurhaliza (titled Bagaikan Sakti) and a duet with Jamal Abdillah (titled Ghazal untuk Rabiah).

M. Nasir music artistry are more to 'World Music' genre. The genre that are not many people do in Malaysia but loved by Malaysian peoples. That's why he is called 'Sifu' in Malaysia because his music inspired many Malaysian musician including Siti Nurhaliza.
Datuk M. Nasir is like Malaysia's/Singapore's David Foster. You mentioned that this performance is different than others. Well, he is indeed 'different' frm any other singers & composers. His music, lyrics, artworks and sometimes his speeches are so artistic & unique that they're hard to interpret or translate directly. For example this song. You've to really go through each word & line to understand what it is about. It's hard to translate it to English!
M.Nasir is also a renowned composer and has won many awards as a composer besides singing his own songs. The lyric for his songs are mostly poetic in the Malay language n has hidden, religious meaning behind it, which is close to sufism. His voice is mostly in the best quality for recording and album version. Maybe you can try hearing some of M.Nasir's songs such as 'Mentera Semerah Padi', 'Suatu Masa', 'Kepadamu Kekasih' with Kembara and 'Sentuhan Listrikmu', just to give you a few different choices to his music...he also composed numerous rock songs for many rock groups in the 80s, 90s and 2000s...
This Tanya Sama itu Hud Hud has a very deep and phylosophical meaning, the lyrics is inspired from a great Persian literature called Mantiq al-Tayr or The Council of the Birds.
The story is about the journey of the Birds led by Hud Hud in finding the king of all Birds King Simurgh. The story is full of sufism teaching and not everyone can understand it.
This song is very unique, with strong deep meaningful lyrics and refreshing score arrangements and unique performance and vocal by Datuk M Nasir, no wonder that this song become the Juara Lagu of thats year edition.
Yes agreed that Juara Lagu is supposedly not just about vocal only but it also appreciate the creativity of the lyricist and composer , and also song interpretation and performance by the singer.

M.Nasir is another legend. Well know. I really love him.. All his songs contain very deep meaning.. Yup.. Very difficult to understand the whole lyrics.. We need to learn more knowledge to really understand the whole meaning of the song.
U can react song Kejoraku Bersatu (MV) which written by M.Nasir. As far as i know, the singer for this song was the only chosen and selected by M. Nasir himself and the singer sang it with his heart and u will be surprised with the vocal and how the singer interpreted the song into singing was really deep.Good luck😊

M.Nasir songs (the one that he sings) mostly are not about vocal performance, high notes and stuff. It's about the story in the song. This song in particular, is abt the relationship between human and God. If I were to translate the title: Tanya Sama Itu Hud Hud = Ask The Hoopoe (type of bird). It has something to do with a story in the Quran (Muslim holy book). Most of his songs don't talk about love the way that most people do. They are always so deep in terms of its meaning. Btw, M.Nasir is the composer with the most wins (and entries) in AJL. He has 5 songs winning AJL if I'm not mistaken. In Malaysia, we call him the sifu (master) in music.

A Good entertainer. Missed the Girl backup singers in the 2nd version, but their were dancers. I like him. A reminder about 4th Impact. They corrected what you wanted in their live Forte Concert version of So Hyung's Bridge over Troubled Water and you never got around to reacting to their flawless "Never Enough."
We invited him to perform free of charge at our school Hari Raya event as he lived near by. That was 40 years ago, before he became a Superstar.

I watch this year (1st AJL i watch) he won almost everything. This song won best Pop Song and Overall winner. His other song, Bonda win best Irama Malaysia song. He also won best performance through this performance. The only other winner this year was Ning Baizura (best ballad song) through Curiga.😮

Yazik you should do a read up on Datuk M Nasir before you react to his songs. He is a top 5 Malaysian legend, composer, songwriter and singer in Malaysia although mostly about 5-10 years ago. Look up on the songs he has done in Wikipedia and listen to them. He has a unique singing style of closing his eyes every time he sings. His singing ability is good/great but the songs he write for other singers are really amazing. Look up on them and you will know!

He is the MASTER of Malaysian music industrial. This song is using different languages and very hard to understand the meaning. It is showing some social criticism in the song too.
