Why You Need a Peacoat

- The peacoat. Few other coats are as timelessly cool and universally available as this military piece. Whether you decide to go the new route or the surplus route, the peacoat looks good on almost everyone and if purchased with some forethought can last generations. Always look for 100% melton or kersey wool over a synthetic/wool blend, and keep in mind the features you want in a coat since there are different variations available.

Got mine, 100% authentic. Only cost me a 4 year enlistment. 🤣
Same here swabby. :)
@@fire58372001 I prefer Snipe. Not much swabbing going on with non-skid and grated deck plates.
Well that’s the ultimate. Thanks for your service!!!
Same way I got mine. But my first enlistment had an extra 12 months attached to it. Here I am 20 years later and still going strong!
The “look” used to be white hat cocked to the side, peacoat with collars popped, cigarette in mouth, stained coffee mug on the left hand, left foot resting on a mooring line.
It is also worth mentioning that genuine peacoats can be buttoned either left on right or right on left, it is because reefers would button them according to the wind direction.
Wisc flank
Thanks! Now I know why that is.
Only up to 67. Then it was side specific.
Bought mine at the Army and Navy surplus store 3-years ago. Winter became my most favorite season because of this fantastic coat.
I got my peacoat for the price of an 8 year enlistment, didn't keep me that warm in Pusan Korea though. Thanks for the history of this awesome garment. :)
I picked up an American made Schott pea coat in perfect condition a few years ago at Goodwill for $9.99 and it has been an awesome addition to my wardrobe! That thing is very warm and very tough! Strongly recommend.
Can't find a Schott for less than 450 Federal Reserve notes!
Won't find any Peacoats in Military surplus stores now!
Fortunately I live in the NYC area. Schott is manufactured in NJ. Every year, they have a factory sale. They discount their clothing at killer savings. I have the navy peacoat for $50. Needless to say, over the years I have picked up several Schott shirts, leather jackets, nylon jacket & a t shirt.
Got mine in boot camp 1973 and lost track of it sometime in the 80s. Somewhere someone has my coat with my name and ssn spray painted thru a stencil inside the back. Hope you love it like I did.
I have my fathers which doesn't fit anymore. I gave it to my son. Its a 1950's version. I bought a Schott version for myself. Incredibly warm.
1) Love your content. I look forward to it, mainly because of your philosophy on quality, and the honest approach.
2) I got my peacoat from a Salvation Army Thrift Store, 100% virgin wool, navy blue, for $25 Canadian. It was a boxy fit but the shoulders fit, so I had it shortened from shin length to lower thigh length, and sewed on my own buttons and made double-breasted to make it not so boxy. It was a legendary purchase!!
@S D Overcoat* You're right
Got mine from 6 years on submarines out of New London. Best piece of gear issued. Great for keeping warm with the winter wind whipping down the Thames. Also, the only time I would pop my collar to keep warm.
The more I watch the Iron Snail and Rose Anvil, the more I appreciate this guy.
Well I certainly appreciate that!
They're doing things these days, you did four years ago. Without great tips like go to a military surplus site.@@CarlMurawski
They are the best winter coat what you can get. They look great, they comfortable and very warm. I wanted one since I saw Sean Connery in the opening of the Hunt for Red October, Now I have 3 of them. I bought the first when I was in college, the second one was an upgrade in material (80% wool outer, 100% cotton lining), the third one is a longer version, which is great as an overcoat. The coolest outfit in a harbor city, I felt like a star in Hamburg. You can also use the lapels to protect your neck, if you button all of the buttons then roll the lapels up.
I had one in the Navy. 100% wool. It was great.
I got my peacoat for Christmas in 2016 and here we are in 2024, and I still wear it during the winter season. In fact, even though its only August, I took my peacoat to the dry cleaners earlier this month so it's clean and ready for winter.
Always owned a wool coat growing up in New England, 52 now and not as trim as I used to be, I have two versions of the Navy Peacoat. I feel its timeless and a quality wool coat will not let you down.
It may be causal but as an Engineer in New England, it looks way classier than the assortment of mostly ski style winter coats that show up at a business casual office.
In the 70s it was the style for us kids in Boston to have one! They we're very warm! I loved mine!
I had one handed down by a late great uncle who was from New York. They're not a common sight here in LA since it hardly ever gets cold enough. Still, I wear it whenever I get an opportunity. Easily my favorite piece of outerwear.
Awesome!
Just bought a beautiful one for $50! Excited to receive my vintage piece.
I had my dad's navy peacoat but don't know what happened to it. didn't mean as much to me when I was younger as would now. he was in the Navy and in the Cuban missile crisis as his destroyer was in the blockade. In January this year (2024) I bought the Triple Aught Design Dreadnaught Peacoat. Missed it last year as it sells out. This thing was expensive $695. Though I saved about a hundred bucks with their military discount. This jacket is amazing! its made from 100% Pure New Melton Wool. Has four pockets. Two hand warmer pockets and two stash pockets. This thing had excellent build quality and very warm. I employ you to check it out! And Carl get one and do a review! I have bought a lot of TAD products and they are all excellent quality!
I have a Navy Blue Burberry Peacoat that I got from Nordstrom. Awesome coat!
Yeah, definitely and you got a good year too, not sure what Riccardo was thinking this year...uggh, the buttons don't even look like bone
New to your channel living up here in Maine. Imma buy myself all those gifts for men that you showed especially the hatchet. Thanx man
Thanks for watching! I love Maine, I rode my motorcycle to Camden last year for a weekend.
had 1 for years i just found a classic i.spiewak and sons golden fleece at a thrift store here in chicago at savers for 8.50 .what a beautiful coat!!!!
Have my own Peacoat from the Navy, But i really like the Swedish Wool Longcoats, and I just bought a Hungarian Wool Trench coat for 50.00. Both were brand new but from the 60's and 80's. Used a Green overcoat dbl breasted made of cotton and waxed it for a bush coat and a rain cape and it is now a light weight, (sorta, wax added a couple of pounds) foul weather coat. But a nice Peacoat, for a casual night out in the city is always good. How ever wear a sweater, cause the girls always seem to get cold, then get real happy when you let them wear it.
I got a 1980s polish officers coat with epaulettes for $100 brand new compared to a schott reproduction of the us bridge coat running for 500
00:32 tote bag carried by that mariner
At one time these were very popular - you could buy them at Army-Navy stores or just about any bag shop. My dad (former merchant marine) had one for many moons. I also had one in my youth. Sadly, they are not made any more.
Peacoats are good and generally keep you warm & dry. However, they lack a hood so that it will not keep the rain or snow or wind from your face and neck.
I got mine thru the Naval Exchange in the 90s, with the help of a buddy that was a Naval Reservist. It has a nylon/polyester lining. Warmist coat I own by far.
Excellent!!!
I have 3 from weather wool and 1 from a thrift shop from the 50's. Its my go to coat during half of the year.
I got mine last Fall at a military surplus store here in Massachusetts for just under $50. It’s 100% wool and is a Swedish navy version with gold metal buttons. Super warm, comfortable and a bargain to boot.
can I ask where in MA?
Great video of history and fashion
Got issued mine in Navy boot camp. Still have it and still wear it! It’s made by Sterlingwear of Boston. Great coat!
i have a 10 button king o wear navy peacoat that was handed down to me.
you can still see some holes where rank was sewn to sleeve shoulder.
I also have a marine corps wool all weather over coat (aka horse blanket ) that i wore during my time in the corps.
my favorite movie with peacoats was ''the last detail'' starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, Randy Quaid.
great flick..
This channel is about to blow up.
Had a version of peacoat at naval academy along with longer bridge coat and a short “campus jacket”. I was a Marine and tossed everything but campus jacket for sentimental reasons. Should have kept those heavy coats for posterity. It was kind of obscene the uniform items I tossed, some of which had no actual Navy counterpart even. Then I dropped about $3k on my Marine officer uniforms and accoutrement.
I had a peacoat when I was in the navy. I loved that peacoat it was warm and fit me very well. One cold Winter Friday when I was ready to go on Weekend liberty I went to the peacoat locker to find that some SOB Had stolen my peacoat. The guys I was with suggest should I just take someone else's but I couldn't rationalize doing that so I Hitchhiked home from Boston to Connecticut in the Winter and it was cold as hell out there with just my dress blues ,of course I never did find out who stole my peacoat but I hope it caught fire while they were wearing it!!!
It's a great casual coat. Thanks for the historical perspective and review, Carl.
Much appreciated, as always!
Big Love Carl, hope you get your Real McCoys one day!
Thank you!!
I bought the Billy reid Navy color short peacoat ( 007 versión ) well made but a little expensive, regards
Great Video. Just found out that Stearlingwear of Boston is closed for good. I was lucky to have bought from them before they closed on of their Pea Coat.
I was so mad when I found out. And its not like that kind of business costs alot to keep running. I cant believe someone like Burlington or even Wilson didnt buy it. All the history just gone.... Were getting a Musolini again, this nonsense cannot continue... Sterling literally saved millions of lives all to be trampled on....
Hi Carl, I don't know if you are particularly a watch guy but I watched your video about your Oris ''hulkysh'' watch and I think it would be nice to see your watch collection if you have one.
Cheers from Spain !!
Thank you!
I have a very modest collection but I’d be happy to show it in a video. Greetings from the states!
Mine was issued in Boot Camp in 1971. It was eventually stolen in the mid-80's, and the replacement one I had to buy was not the same quality. We used to wear the flap of our dress blue "cracker jacks" on the outside of the peacoat, even though we were told not to. We had beards then also. :) .
USN (Ret) '71-'92
The Pea coat is a great. Can dress it up or down. A good quality one will last a lifetime or more if you take care of it. I wanted a few in different colors because I liked them do much, do I figured second hand shops might have a gem if I'm patient and persistent. I managed to get 3 of my favorite colored pea coats at 2 different second hand shops. One black one grey & one in camel brown. All in good shape without spending a lot and was able to get 3 for less then one brand new. It was a bargain in my eyes. If there was any navy/army surplus stores I would have went first but none in my area, but if I see any when I'm out of town I'll be sure to take a look. Anyways nice review on your realistic take and history regarding the pea coat. All the best..
Got an absolutely ripping peacoat for 20 bucks a couple of weeks ago. No idea of the brand but it's got a luxurious quilted inner lining and nice deep pockets.
Was thinking about getting the schott one, my friend has a shop.. but actually prefer this no name one. Classic styling with a bit of hidden luxury.
Found it while going to second hand stores with a friend.. they asked me because they always get good stuff when i go with them.
Thanks researching the % of wool in navy peacoats matters. So I ordered LL bean 2xl regular black peacoat and it fits me perfectly. I’m 6’2 255lbs chest 48 1/2 inches biceps 20 inches. The coat was perfect fit meaning if I reach 265lbs I will be too big for the coat.
Now I know importance of less wool compared to 70-100% wool coats. I have 100% wool
Robert Redford, The Three Days Of The Condor - my favorite variant.
I used to have a bunch of those until I found out about the TOGGLE COAT from the R.N. I got one & never went back to the P-coat. It was great for standing watch on the bridge wings out at sea. :)
Sounds amazing! I may have to research the toggle coat for a future video!
saturday sailor they were handed off man to man upon relieving the watch. one reason they're rare, at least war time versions. Officers and senior NC ratings of course would often buy there own. BTW, this practice is why they're really known as watch coats, NOT duffle coats.
I got mine in 1967 as part of a Navy enlistment deal. I found it nice until it got wet. It didn't do much for the head.
Mine was issued to me in1961. Nice and toasty during winters at Great Lakes and walking around for 6 hours at a time on Shore Patrol on the east coast and Mediterranean ports. Coupled with the turtle neck sweater was a guarantee that you'd make it thru alright.
I had the Schott NYC peacoat that I purchased back in the 1990s for around $100. Sad to say I got rid of it when I was living in Florida because I never wore it and with 100% wool it was very stiff compared to my puffer jacket and ichy. Now I'm shopping for a new one and looking for a peacoat with more flexibility that is not so heavy.
I got a nice navy- issue one one from a surplus shop a few years ago
Excellent! How do you like it?
My grandfather was in the navy from 48-56. I have his peacoat with the corduroy liner. I'm currently in the navy, and was issued my own. you can tell how much the quality has gone down when you compare both of them.
Wow, hang on to that!
I found one in great condition, years ago on a fleamarket. It's from the dutch police, in dark navy, with silver buttons. The funniest thing about it are the gunholster inside the pockets.
Like your Channel, Cheers from Germany!
Greetings from the states!
That sounds like such a cool coat!
@@CarlMurawski definitely 👍
My local army surplus store sells 100% wool pea coats for 80 bucks.
Love that movie boondog saints. Gotta get a pea coat
I love pea coats, have many styles, one that has eluded me is a military leather one,I am 65 yrs old now but still have hope of coming across one at some point 😊
Peacoat is all about Redford on 3 Days of the Condor!
I bought a dark brown peacoat for 150 AUD in circa 2011 in Australia really a good deal
Such a cool cool video i watched twice. BTW I;m retired US Navy and the Peacoat remains a part of the uniform for US Navy Sailors ( and the Coast Guard ) in fact mine is sitting in storage along with all my old uniform stuff as i type. its true you can find fantastic deals one used examples at Army Navy Surplus stores. And, If you have a military veteran or active duty Navy friend whose allowed to shop at the base Exchange you can have him/her purchase a brand new one for a couple hundred bucks if you just NEED a new one LoL! Also i read below form another former Sailor talking about his getting stolen and man that is SO TRUE,.on larger ships and naval bases both Peacoats and those Leather Navy Flying jackets sometimes get "procured" by others LoL. Its not worth going to Captains Mast ( military navy punishment ) to me,.but apparently people do it. Keep up the great vids man!
Thank you so much! I really enjoy hearing the experiences of men like you and your take on this stuff. Thank you for your service and please feel free to suggest anything you’d like to see a video on in the future!
Hey there Carl. Awesome channel, just found out about it, this is exactly what I am looking for, I have my own leather coat project and so many inspirations one place, thanks! Greetings from Denmark, my last name is also polish tho✌️
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the kind words, and hello from the states!
@@CarlMurawski You're welcome and thanks!
I love peacoats. I also found that bridge coats and mackinaws/jeep coats also look pretty awesome too, despite my 5'6" body!
Peacoats are excellent. However, given the choice, I opt for a Duffle coat.
there are pea coats that has zipper insides is it better and/or warmer than the classic ones?
Could it be worn with a pair of black joggers and boots
Very enjoyable. Thanks. This video mostly covers the American, as in American Navy peacoat. There is a longer history of peacoat in Europe and in the U.K. If you are looking for a new, 100% wool peacoats, I recommend *Brittany Boutique French Nautical Clothing.* High quality and much less expensive than other wool options in the USA. No connection. Just a happy customer. Unfortunately the website was glitchy when I checked today.
I have one from Pike Brothers,Germany made of a sturdy cotton fabric called elephant skin, they also have one made of wool.
Scott's NYC, slim fit. 80/20 blend. There standard one is WAY to thick for CA. A well made, clean and almost authentic coat.
I searched high and low for a amazing Peacoat. I literally spent five years trying on pea coats and couldn't find the proper fit or style. The fashion brands were too thin, or didn't button the weather out properly. The originals were too boxy and let the wind up the hem, and Schott was just too restrictive. I couldn't move my arms. I finally found the perfect pea coat last year at &Sons. I had the silly arm strap removed at my local tailor, but the jacket fits beautifully. The wool is fantastic, and the thing buttons right up into a weather fortress.
I went to a thrift shop and found a WW2 one for $15. It was more expensive to dry clean than what it cost. Was looking at the weather wool one, but might just have one hand made with thick wool and shearling on the inside. Model after WW1 type, waiting for price.
Liked before watching, bc I love pea coats.
remember Boondock Saints :P
I own two. One is from a company called Brandit and the other is by Kenneth Cole. I love em but I prefer my skiff jacket
My coats a modern one from a surplus store, going on i guess 8 years now and its basically still brand new even with semi daily wear
I got my first pea coat at a The Salvation Army in Indiana. It was authentic and I have never found another like it. I paid $7 and regret not keeping it. I’ve heard rumor it was a special Great Lakes version and had a much thicker warmer interior than standard issue.
I got a J Crew pea coat from an outlet store at least 10 years ago and it has held up great despite spending a couple of years in the trunk of my car. I can’t remember how much I paid for it but I’m a cheap bastard so I know it wasn’t much. Next to my leather jacket it’s the coolest coat I have.
Vintage clothing stores are great for picking up classic peacoats...
Love my Peacoat / mine is dark blue from Ted Baker
Have one I purchased from the company that supplies the Navy. Needed a larger size as the one issued to me in boot camp in 1970 no longer fits. Think it shrunk. 😳
Love the outro music!
Who makes a quality six button version? Thanks!
My uncle retired as Navy Chaplain from Baltimore MD. He brought me a black peacoat for me in 1999 my jr year in High School
I have to admit that atleast the ones I saw from time to time never really appealed to me, I always felt that the shortness is kinda unproportionate to the broad lapels and the big buttons. I would also guess that they do also look better on a little bit shorter guys. Nice video though, I very much appreciate the history bits.
Hey that’s why they make so many different styles! Everyone is different. What do you like for a coat?
@@CarlMurawski Absolutely! Generally I like many different things... But the two coats I own at the moment are a second hand duffle coat as a quite casual option and I recently was in the lucky position to having kind of a Paletot -ish coat bespoke made for me. So that would be the more formal counterpart. This combination does work pretty well!
The Kersey Peacoat is King
Mine is a Sterling. Expensive, but it's the real thing. Sterling has/had the contract to supply the government.
What's the one is the picture you used for the video
I like the Schott Pea Coats.
I had one , it was great ,
Yes, I own one...💯✔
Great knowledge, I'm the bridge coat guy.
The Last Detail (movie, Jack Nicolson), Weather Wool offers a merino wool version for....wait for it....$1000!!! (Army Navy store, I may check there first)
If you can only have one coat, the Peacoat is the one!
It’s an option you can dress up or down that will last a long time. I agree!
I still regret not getting this one I saw online at a surplus store. Very slim cut, huge lapels and tons of buttons
Check out the Billy Reid version if you like more modern styling. James Bond wore it 😉
You had me at Bond! 😁
Literally sold as Bond Peacoat at billy reid!
Yeap i have one Italy made its little expensive, good quality
Hey man, know it's an old video, but what is the jacket you're wearing?
Bought one online from a mil surp store for 62 bucks. In brand new condition. And I mean new. More than likely they just sat in a warehouse somewhere for decades and we're never issued. 100 percent wool coat in pristine condition. Similar modern products wil run you a couple hundred bucks more so they are very much a steal if you can find them
LOL Boondock 2 Rocco's speech !!! 😎 SLAINTE !
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I got mine from the Defence Logistics at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes Illinois. Doesn't get much more legit than that... ;P lol. The mid-section really needs to be takin in though.
Loved it!
Great video. I'm not sure if we have Navy surplus stores in Canada, but if so I'd get one.
sportsman guide.com
I'm still in the navy, and i understand pride and heritage but damn that peacoat does not keep you warm on watch.
From what I’ve seen, the ones they issue now do not compare with the one I was issues in 1970. That one kept me warm standing quarterdeck mid-watch in Connecticut .
Please do a M65 video like this One!
GREAT idea!
Hey Carl watch "The Last Detail" with Jack Nicholson (1973) saw this movie as kid and was instantly in love with the peacoat
Will do, I love Jack Nicholson!
Which one has Robert Redford in 3 Days of the Condor? Is this a black or a blue one
I got mine when I was in boot camp
