Yeah no joke Ideon is a Lovecraftian horror disguised as a super robot anime. The IDE has a will and basically drives the Earthlings into much harsher conflicts when it could easily protect everyone and one shot the enemies. It throws meteors at both races home worlds to tell them "STOP FIGHTING YOU IDIOTS OR I WILL KILL EVERYONE" the Earthlings even realize what the IDE is doing and find they can't even stop or destroy the Ideon. It gets to the point where IDE is just like "That's it, killing the entire universe and starting over again, maybe the next lifeforms will get their shit together."
I think the idea he killed all the characters just because he was mad about being cancelled is funny. if you've seen the show it's like...it's going that way anyway. it's the only end that'll feel real to the story
tomino is absolutely petty enough to do that though, his entire career is just a protracted war with producers(who are jerks and deserve the hassle, mind)

Actually, Bandai's artist made the Robot first and wanted Tomino to make a Anime out of it, which explains the "shitty" design and the arguably pointless transformation mechanic and why the 6th Speicies needed it to look like a car being never explained. Tomino even stated in one of his interviews reagarding the design and said "why else would i use a horrible design like this"

I think one other problem in terms of Ideon not pushing toys was that all the enemy mechs were like, insectoid walkers. Look at robotech/macross. Everyone loves the Valkyrie jets but nobody like the Zentradi walker pods.
Thats a shame, the destroid and battle pod designs are really cool and underrated. Its amusing to see how fond Battletech fans are of them, Fasa having adopted many anime designs including Macross into their lore.
Be invoked is great, but I think you should watch the show over A Contact. A Contact makes the rushed moments of the show look like proper character development.

The show doesn't focus on Cosmo until maybe episode 14). It also skips over stuff like Gije (the Buff Clan member who join them) and his character development, and he's one of the most developed characters in the show. That being said, the show is a slow burn, but less than Gundam 0079 and Zeta.

it's probably that it wasn't monster of the week that got the show cancelled... and also what kid would want to buy toys from a series that has the main characters killed off every week (also what parent would allow their kids to watch this). it's hard to air reruns for a show that needs to be watched in order... so it makes it hard for this show to be syndicated... to be honest, the original Gundam toys were shit.. when Bandai started making kits YEARS later was when Gundam really got popular.. but when it aired.. not so much.. also, the Zakus are mostly one color
The problem with Ideon is that the mecha design was awful. The whole concept was garbage. It's not Tomino's fault. Studio Submarine did the Ideon mecha and it's like a leftover from 10 years earlier. The Ideon story and characters and all the Buff Clan mecha are all an entirely different thing. The shitty Ideon design is what caused me to never give the show a chance for years. Having finally watched it, it is clear the Ideon design is irrelevant. Every other part of the show far more than makes up for any shortcoming. But it still would never sell toys. The whole anime industry learned from this disaster that you've fucking got to have good designs. You need Kunio Okawara and others to design good robots. It took Ideon to teach them crap won't work. Ideon was beyond huge in what it did to the industry and everyone working in it. It's also really good except for the robot.

I watched the whole series up to 38, then just watched Be Invoked today, and it definitely ends the series perfectly. Definitely worth a watch.
